Military Women’s History Month Every March, the Army honors women military service members and civilians at installations around the world. Local community participation is encouraged in the form of events, activities, speeches, lunches, and symposiums. In 2011, Major General Carla Hawley-Bowland, commander of Northern Regional Medical Command and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, highlighted the contributions of women not only within the military, but throughout the development of our nation. Bowland acknowledged that women in the military continue to challenge gender standards in society and advance women's rights, citing that today's military women are able to serve in ninety-one percent of Army officer career fields and seventy percent of enlisted career specialties. Leadership opportunities for military women are constantly expanding and female soldiers serve a variety of missions in many different capacities. Military women's sacrifices, professionalism, and bravery have always raised the standards for dedication and patriotism. Hawley-Bowland, the first female Medical Corps general in the history of the U.S Army, had a message for military women: Follow your passions, and don't let anyone tell you no. If you want it, go for it; be the first and set a new precedent for gender equality in the military.

I AM A SOLDIER, My heart is in the land.
I fight for life and freedom, As I walk upon the sand.
I do not walk unworthy. I will not stand alone.
The angels travel with me, I fight for land and home.
I AM A SOLDIER.
A daddy and a friend. A comrade and a brother,
A warrior to the end.
I do not walk unknowing, The risk upon the way.
For God travels with me, Each and every day.
-Diana Hahlbohm
