    RFID Products For Veterinary Use

Microchip tags, using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) are now widely used to provide pet owners with peaceof mind and to help farmers provide the traceability of livestock needed to promote public confidence in foodsafety. RFID tags also provide a means to identify laboratory animals, simplifying the collection of experimentaldata. Tagging has proved its value in helping to track and trace both domestic and farm animals. Soon EULegislation will require all equines to be tagged.

CoreRFID specialises in supplying the technology needed for animal tagging and checking; offering tags, injectors, and readers.

CoreRFID are specialists in RFID with over 12 years experience in tagging and tracing systems. As a long standingmember of the BSAVAs Microchip Advisory Group (MAG), CoreRFID keeps in touch with the latest developmentsin the needs of veterinary practices and uses this knowledge to ensure that our products are compatible withrelevant standards and legislation as well as with companionanimal repatriation services such as PetLog.

    Injectable Animal Tags

CoreRFID provides injectable animal tags that conform to the ISO11784/5 standard for animal tags. These 12mm long grain of rice tags,pre-encoded with unique identity numbers, come in boxes containing areusable injector, 12 sterile one-time needles and tags each with six selfadhesive barcode strips with the same number. This allows for tags andaccompanying documentation to be linked one to another.

ISO 11784/5 is the standard used for companion animal repatriationsystems based on RFID animal tagging (such as PetLog) and foridentification of animals for DEFRAs PETS (Pets Travel Scheme). PETSdepends on a Pet Passport which uses an RFID chip to allow animals totravel between those countries subscribing to the scheme.

The self adhesive barcoded strips provided with our ISO compatible tagsare designed to be used in conjunction with the DEFRA Passport ControlSheet so that a passport number can be uniquely linked to a specificchip and thus a specific animal.

These tags are also available in a non-ISO version (EM4102) for research animal use and for use in wildlife tracking or similarscientific use.

ISO compliant tags from CoreRFID comeready to use with labels, and injector insterile packing.

    Other Animal Tags

As well as providing tags for companion animals, CoreRFID is able to supply a wide range of other animal tagging products. These include lightweight leg ring tags for poultry and other birds and various heavy duty tags for agricultural animals as analternative to barcoded tags for cattle, sheep and other farm animals. CoreRFID can also create custom tags if needed.

    Animal Tag Readers

Over 3.5 millions in the UK have had an RFID chip implanted. Any animalought to be checked for an RFID chip when it comes into a practice for thefirst time, in line with the guidance provided by the BSAVA and the RCVS.

Not all RFID readers are suitablefor use with animal tags or in theenvironment of a veterinarysurgery. CoreRFID offers severalreaders suitable for use in thisarea.

Most popular is the RT100 readerwhich can be easily used withanimals and gives good results, reading tags up to a distance of 5to 8cm so that the reader onlyneeds to be held near to the taginjection site.

For higher performance with agreater storage capacity andgreater read range CoreRFIDoffers the H5 reader with read

capability of up to 25cm and the ability to store the details of 2000 tags.

For other applications it may be convenient to have an RFID reader whichcan be fitted into the CF slot of a handheld computer or PDA. CoreRFIDprovides the CF117 reader for this. The CF117 offers a similar performanceto the RT100, reading both ISO and EM4102 cards but loads its data directlyinto the handheld computer or PDA. And, for those James Herriot moments,CoreRFID also offers ruggedized PDAs such as the PSION Workabout withintegrated RFID readers.

    Other RFID Solutions

Although animal tagging is by far the most common use for RFID within the veterinary community, it also has otherapplications. Contact us to discuss how RFID could be use to improve the management of assets in your practice, managestocks or control access to hospital areas for example.
