The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Reflections

Dear Friends, This weekend is dedicated to the Annual Catholic Appeal. This appeal which began during the days of Cardinal Bernardin, is an annual fund-raising campaign that supports the parishes, schools, ministries, pro-grams and agencies that serve the educational, physical and spiritual needs of the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Through Catholic Relief Services, the Appeal also serves people around the world, re-gardless of religious affiliation, whose lives are devastated by natural disasters, illnesses, wars and famine. Faith is alive in parishes and schools, soup kitchens and counseling centers, on street corners and in churches. It’s lived through people of all backgrounds, from every neighborhood. People everywhere come together to support one an-other. It is in this spirit that the Appeal exists: to bring support gifts, and build strong communities through faith and your generosity. Your contributions and generosity are deeply appreciated, much needed and make a real difference in the lives of many. Each of us is responsible for the well-being of others within our Archdiocese and throughout world. The Annual Catholic Appeal is an opportunity to meaningfully support Catholic education, faith formation, community life ministries and programs for peace and justice here and every-where. Careful thought is given to the use of each and every gift. They are gifts to support God’s work, and we use them accordingly. Please consider making a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Ap-peal. To also remind you, that anything above/beyond our set goal will come back to St. Francis. For more information, follow this link: www.AnnualCatholicAppeal.com Thank you for your continued generosity to those in need!

ARE YOU INTERESTED in becoming a MINISTER OF PRAISE?

What is involved? As a Minister of Praise you promise to pray and offer your sacrifices and sufferings and joys for the needs of the parish, the universal church and all prayer requests listed in our parish book of intercessions (located near the chapel). The pastor or designated parish staff member sends all ministers of praise a letter each month naming spe-cific prayer intentions for that month. All parishioners are assured of being prayed for daily. How do I apply? Simply complete a form (located in the narthex pamphlet rack) and drop it off at the office or place in the col-lection basket. Thank you for considering this won-derful ministry.

Adult Faith Formation AROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed Upton

The increase in the num-ber of children participat-ing in parish based Reli-gious Education oc-curred for a number of reasons. (Please recall I am describing the era of Cardinal Cody (1965-1982). Cardinal Cody would not permit new schools to be built; the Catholic popu-lation was increasing; existing schools were not able to accommodate all who sought admission; tuition was increasing; and parents were making alternate choices. At the same time, in the period immediately fol-lowing the Second Vati-can Council, a new un-derstanding of parish life began to emerge. This was not a fundamental change but a more fo-cused perspective. Prior to the council, a parish was commonly described as a church and school. Each more or less separate, often with the school receiving primary focus. The Council redirected our focus. The centrality of the Sacraments be-

came clearly focused. In a special way the Sacra-ments of Initiation: Bap-tism, Confirmation, Eu-charist received renewed attention. The parish was clearly seen as the focus for not only the celebration of the sacraments, but hav-ing the responsibility, with the parents, to in-struct the children and bring them into the life of the church. Being a part of the com-munity of faith was made central and this was the responsibility of the par-ish. The school and Reli-gious Education are the programs by which a parish carried out this task. School and/or Re-ligious Education carried out this aspect of the parish mission. Volumes have been writ-ten about these chang-es. A single paragraph is not sufficient. I want to describe a simple change that took place. My point is that Baptism makes us one in Christ, we are not di-vided but initiated into Christ.

On a practical level, we lived out this understand-ing by no longer separat-ing school children and Religious Education chil-dren for the celebration of these sacraments. In this way we celebrated our unity in Christ not our educational differences. Last week and this, I tried to describe two fun-damental changes in the increased enrollment in Religious Education - providing trained leaders and developing a basis of unity and focus in par-ish life. I am writing this weeks before it will appear in the bulletin. I want to express my sympathy to Mary Kay Burberry on the recent death of her son. Mary Kay has served as our Religious Education Director for many years. She is a witness in faith. She walked with her son dur-ing his many illnesses - an example of love and mercy. I will keep her and David in prayer. May he rest in peace.

MINISTRY MOMENTS THIS WEEK: JIM HAHN

Throughout 2018, this page will include reflec-tions from staff and parish-ioners highlighting their ministry involvement. “Far and away the best

prize that life has to offer is the chance to

work hard at work worth doing”

Theodore Roosevelt

Hello, my name is Jim Hahn. I am the Director of Facilities and Opera-tions here at St. Francis. Many of you may know me in that role since 2015, and others will recognize me as the trumpeter and choir member in the SFA Mu-sic Ministry long before that. These words by Teddy Roosevelt have hit home in my heart as I strive to keep our beautiful parish looking and functioning at its best! I started my professional career in music, and soon after found a niche as a litur-gical musician. Because of my work in the church, I met my wonderful wife Leanne, who just hap-pens to be our amazing

Music Director at the parish. I’ve worn a few different hats throughout my career, mainly as a custom home builder in our family construction company for close to thirty years. A turning point for me in my life is when I realized that my connection to the church through Music Ministry could be more than the singing and trumpet playing. I formed a company with the in-tent to focus on con-struction and mainte-nance projects geared specifically toward the church. After completing numerous projects throughout the Archdio-cese, including quite a few here at St. Francis, it became clear to me that I would love to work full time for the church. Fr. Artur was instrumental in helping me get my foot in the door by recommend-ing me to his good friend Fr. Benedykt Pazdan. When he was looking for a Facilities Director for his parish, St Bernadette in Evergreen Park. After a wonderful year at St. Bernadette, the position opened here at St. Fran-

cis with the retirement of Dennis Gardner. With the encouragement and support of Fr. Artur, Fr. Ed and Diane Niehaus, I had to jump at the chance to work at this beautiful parish which was home to my music ministry! I would like to thank all of the wonderful people of our parish for welcoming me so warmly since my start in 2015. It has been so rewarding to work with the amazing staff here, and to serve the many parishioners at St. Francis, all of whom I consider great friends. I hope that I can continue as your Facilities Director for many years to come. I will do my best to keep our parish maintained and beautiful!

One last quote from my father, who had such a huge influence on my life- “The hard we do now,

the impossible just takes a little longer.”

God Bless and thank you all!

FOUR CHARACTERISTICS

OF A VIBRANT CHURCH

HOPE, GIFTEDNESS, AWARENESS, AND

As the world becomes more “spiritual but NOT religious” what does the Catholic Church have to

offer?

What can RELIGION provide, that the culture

cannot?

What does our faith in Jesus bring to the world?

This workshop will be facilitated by

Sr. Gael Gensler and

Kathy McNicholas What factors mark a “vibrant parish”? There are about as many answers to that question as there are Catholic parishes! And most of the answers view the parish through a unique lens – Finances in the black? October count? Number of Baptisms and Weddings? Is that true vi-brancy? Sr. Gael and Kathy will spend an evening view-ing “parish vibrancy” through the lens of what our Catholic faith has to offer the modern world – Hope, Giftedness, Awareness, and Relationship. Come and be inspired to discuss ways your parish can be more alive and vibrant in Christ.
