    In 383 the roman legions left Britain and went to Gaul(France).

    Because, Barbarian had invaded the Roman Empire. (CAUSE) In 407 there werent Roman soldiers to defend Britain from

    the Picts and Scots. (CONSEQUENCE)

    Britain asked for helpto Anglo-Saxons, they came to Britain.

    At time passed more Anglo-Saxons arrived. They attackedBritons and stayed here.

    The Anglo-Saxons were pagans. Butthe Celts, who were Christians,gradually returned to England and

    Scotland from Ireland and Wales andbegan to convert the Picts, Scots andAnglo-Saxons to their religion.

    ALFRED THE GREAT

    In 871, Alfred becameking of Wessex. Soonthe Vikings attacked his

    kingdom and he startedto prepare an armywhich defeatedGuthrum, the Vikings

    king, at Edington battle.The Viking surrendered.

    ENGLAND AFTER ALFRED

    After 30 years of Alfreds death England was inpeace. Three kings made this situation possible.

    They were Alfreds son, Edward and Athelstan. King Edgar decided to build monasteries to

    spread the peace to all the kingdom.

    STRUGGLE FOR THETHRONE

    Edward the confessor died without anydescendant. Three men claimed the right tobe the next king:

    William, duke of Normandy (Edwardscousin)

    Harald Hardrada, king of Norway (He

    wanted to join England to his own kingdom) Harold, Earl of Wessex (The most powerful

    anglo-saxon in England)

    HAROLD AND WILLIAM

    Harold was crowned by anarchibishop. William feltcheated and decided toinvade england. The weatherwas bad and his ship weredelayed. Later Haraldinvaded Northern England.Harold defeated Harald atthe battle of StamfordBridge. William waited forHarold. Harold marched to

    the south. In October Haroldand his army reachedHastings.

    THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS

    The battle started atnine oclock,14thOctober 1066 and thewarriors fought on thetop of a mountain.

    When the Normanswere shooting arrows atthe English, Harold died.and William marched toLondon burning all the

    buildings. The city withno king and no army todefend it, surrendered.

    THE CRUSADES

    Richard I (one of Williamsdescendants) wasinterested in fighting in the

    Holy Land. This land had been

    captured by the Turks in1070.

    The Pope ordered all

    Christians to invade theHoly Land. All knights fromEurope fought, but itwasnt conquered until1190 on a crusade byRichard I.
