IV. CONFIGURATION AND S E T U PUSED

The laptop t h a t used had the following configuration:Make: Acer Lap top , Processor: Mobile Centrino processor

Memory/RAM: 256 MB Hard Disk Capac i ty : 20 GB with

Onboard wireless network adapter, PCMCIA Wireless

A d a p t e r s lo t etc. So our laptop had 2 wireless network

adapters. We used one for wireless network detection, usingNetStumbler 0.4.0 software [ 5 1 and the other for 802.1 lb/g

packet capturing using Link Ferret 3. 10 software [ 6 ] .

We fixed a CISCO Aironet 350 series PCMCIA

Wireless adapter and configured the laptop to capturewireless p a c k e t susing Link Ferret packet capturing softwareand appropriate network drivers. WinPcap software was also

needed t o be i n s t a l l e dfor packet c a p t u r i n gto w o r k . TheL i n k Ferret software can b e configured to capture packetsfrom different c h a n n e l sw i t h a huge b u f f e rs i z e , w i t h a v e r a g ep a c k e ts i z eof around 64 b y t e s or more We also installedN e t w o r kStumbler software that could stumble upon /de tec tw i r e l e s snetworks as we drive a round . It b a s i c a l l y scans foran y p r e s e n c e of w i r e l e s s LAN The N e t w o r kStumblersoftware could show us the w i r e l e s sn e t w o r k sand its detailslike MAC a d d r e s s , SSID name/network name Access Point

name and details, d e t a i l s of encryption if enabled or the

a b s e n c e of i t , the channel number the t ime stamp signals t r e n g t h e t c . With the Network Stumbler S c a n n i n g enabledand L i n k F e r r e t p a c k e tc a p t u r i n genab led , with two laptops d i d a d r i v e - a r o u n din one of our cars on some of our

h i g h w a y s .As

e x p e c t e d ,wireless n e t w o r k swere detected and

p a c k e t swere c a p t u r e d from the n e e d e dplaces. The r e s u l t sw e r e q u i t er e v e a l i n g .

V. PACKET CAPTIURIG AND OBSERVATIONS

P a c k e t Capturing were d o n e in various s p o t s wherew i r e l e s s n e t w o r k s were d e t e c t e d through Net Stumblera l e r t s .It was quite surprising to us that quite a number ofw i r e l e s sn e t w o r k swere working without encryption. Theys i m p l yh a d n o ' te n a b l e d the WvnEPp t i o n . The packe tc a p t u r i n g d o n e in e i g h t different sessions were fo r anaverage duration o f around 30 minutes and were captured i ne i g h tdifferent files. T h e s ef i l e shave been merged to form as i n g l efile to do an overall analysis. For s e c u r i t yreasons, d i d n ' twant to draw o ur d r i v i n gmap or disclose locations.
