The Icon of The Baptism of Our Lord

This icon depicts Jesus Christ’s baptism by John in the Jordan River. At the center of the icon, the baptized Christ is revealed as the Son of God (which is the meaning of the word “Theophany,” seen

the upper left corner of this version of the icon). The Holy Spirit is seen above Christ’s head, descending upon him as a dove. John the Baptist stands to the left of Christ in a bent posture of

reverence. A tree and an ax are found in the bottom left of the icon, symbolizing John the Baptist’s sermon of repentance in Matthew 3:10, “Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” Finally, angels are seen

to the right of the icon, waiting reverently to receive and clothe the newly baptized Christ.

Welcome to Christchurch, as we worship during this unique season in our life together!

Please maintain proper physical distance. Everyone 5 years and older is required to wear a mask that covers both the nose and mouth throughout the entire service. If you are unable

to wear a mask that covers both your nose and mouth for any reason, we invite you to join our service via livestream at home or in our parking lot by visiting www.christchurchanglican.net.

So that our children are able to witness the Baptisms today, they will be dismissed after the Baptism (pg. 8).

Children will return at the Peace to join their families for Holy Eucharist.

Children from 5 years old to 2nd grade will turn left at the altar and children from 3rd to 5th grade will turn right at the altar. Children under 5 are invited to join Children’s Church with a parent, be taken to our nursery,

remain with their family in service, or any combination thereof.

Communion will be available today in three forms – Spiritual Communion, physical Communion during the 9:30a.m. service, and Communion at the rail from 11:00a.m. to 12:00p.m.

If you are visiting with us, welcome to Christchurch – you bless us with your presence!

The Opening Acclamation (BCP 161) Celebrant I will make you as a light for the nations, People That my salvation may reach to the end of the earth. Celebrant There is one Body and one Spirit; People There is one hope in God’s call to us; Celebrant One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; People One God and Father of all.

…………..…………… Holy Baptism …………...…………..

Please be seated The Exhortation and Presentation (BCP 162) Celebrant Dearly beloved, Scripture teaches that we were all dead in our sins and trespasses, but by grace we may be saved

through faith. Our Savior Jesus Christ said, “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God”; and he commissioned the Church to “make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Here we ask our heavenly Father that these Candidates, being baptized with water, may be filled with the Holy Spirit, born again, and received into the Church as living members of Christ’s body. Therefore, I urge you to call upon God the Father, through our Lord Jesus Christ, that of his abundant mercy he will grant to these Candidates that which by nature they cannot have.

The Candidates for Holy Baptism will now be presented. Parents & Godparents I present N.N. to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. Celebrant Today, on behalf of these children, you shall make vows to renounce the devil and all his works, to trust God

wholeheartedly, and to serve him faithfully. It is your task to see that they are taught, as soon as they are able to learn, the meaning of all these vows, and of the Faith that you will profess as revealed in the Holy Scriptures. They must come to put their faith in Jesus Christ, and learn the Creeds, the Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and all other things that a Christian ought to know, believe, and do for the welfare of their soul. When they have embraced all these, they are to come to the Bishop to be confirmed, that they may publicly claim the Faith for their own and be further strengthened by the Holy Spirit to serve Christ and his kingdom.

Celebrant Are you willing and ready to undertake this? Parents & Godparents I am, the Lord being my helper.

The Profession of Faith (BCP 164) Celebrant Do you renounce the Devil and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God? Parents & Godparents I renounce them. Celebrant Do you renounce the empty promises and deadly deceits of this world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God? Parents & Godparents I renounce them. Celebrant Do you renounce the sinful desires of the flesh that draw you from the love of God? Parents & Godparents I renounce them. Celebrant Almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness and evil, and lead you into the light and obedience of

the kingdom of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Celebrant Do you turn to Jesus Christ and confess him as your Lord and Savior? Parents & Godparents I do. Celebrant Do you joyfully receive the Christian Faith, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments? Parents & Godparents I do. Celebrant Will you obediently keep God’s holy will and commandments, and walk in them all the days of your life? Parents & Godparents I will, the Lord being my helper. Celebrant Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ? People We will. Celebrant Let us join with these Candidates to proclaim our faith in the words of the ancient baptismal confession, the

Apostles’ Creed. Celebrant Do you believe and trust in God the Father? People I do. I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Celebrant Do you believe and trust in Jesus Christ? People I do. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of

the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried: He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Celebrant Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? People I do. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of

sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Litany for the Candidates Lector Let us now pray for these Candidates who are to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. Lector That these children may come to confess their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. People We beseech you to hear us, Good Lord.

Lector That all these Candidates may continue in the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers.

People We beseech you to hear us, Good Lord. Lector That they may walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which they have been called, ever growing in faith and

all heavenly virtues. People We beseech you to hear us, Good Lord. Lector That they may persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever they fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord. People We beseech you to hear us, Good Lord. Lector That they may proclaim by word and deed the Good News of God in Christ Jesus to a lost and broken world. People We beseech you to hear us, Good Lord. Lector That as living members of the Body of Christ, they may grow up in every way into him who is the head. People We beseech you to hear us, Good Lord. Lector That, looking to Jesus, they may run with endurance the race set before them, and at the last receive the

unfading crown of glory. People We beseech you to hear us, Good Lord. Prayer for the Candidates for Holy Baptism (BCP 167) Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting Father, in your great mercy you saved Noah and his family in the Ark from the

destruction of the flood, prefiguring the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. Look mercifully upon these your servants. Wash and sanctify them through your Holy Spirit, that they may be delivered from destruction and received into the Ark of Christ’s Church; and being steadfast in faith, joyful through hope, and rooted in love, they may pass through the turbulent floods of this troublesome world and come into the land of everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thanksgiving Over the Water (BCP 168) Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with your spirit. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them up to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation.

Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John in the River Jordan when the Holy Spirit descended upon him as a dove. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are made regenerate by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now, Father, sanctify this water by the power of your Holy Spirit. May all who are baptized here be cleansed from sin, be born again, and continue for ever faithful in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

……………. The Liturgy of the Word ………………

The New Testament Please be seated Acts 10:34-38 34 So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36 As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), 37 you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. The Gospel Please stand Mark 1:7-11 Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark. …………...……… The Holy Communion ……...…………... At the Offertory Songs of Thankfulness and Praise J.S. Bach

The Great Thanksgiving - Anglican Standard Text (BCP 115) Please stand Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with your spirit. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them up to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who took on our mortal flesh to reveal his glory; that he might bring us out of darkness and into his own glorious light. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. All praise and glory is yours, O God our heavenly Father, for in your tender mercy, you gave your only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption. He made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and he instituted, and in his Holy Gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again.

Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesus, Lord, to thee we raise,

manifested by the star to the sages from afar;

branch of royal David's stem in thy birth at Bethlehem;

anthems be to thee addressed, God in man made manifest.

Manifest at Jordan's stream,

Prophet, Priest, and King supreme; and at Cana, wedding-guest,

in thy Godhead manifest; manifest in power divine, changing water into wine;

anthems be to thee addressed, God in man made manifest.

Manifest in making whole palsied limbs and fainting soul;

manifest in valiant fight, quelling all the devil's might;

manifest in gracious will, ever bringing good from ill;

anthems be to thee addressed, God in man made manifest.

Manifest on mountain height, shining in resplendent light,

where disciples filled with awe thy transfigured glory saw.

When from there thou leddest them steadfast to Jerusalem,

cross and Easter Day attest God in man made manifest.

Caroline, Sophia, Eliza, Charlotte and Abigail MacLeod will process three kings to join our Nativity crèche.

So now, O merciful Father, in your great goodness, we ask you to bless and sanctify, with your Word and Holy Spirit, these gifts of bread and wine, that we, receiving them according to your Son our Savior Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood. For on the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my Body, which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.” Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again. And here we offer and present to you, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice. We humbly pray that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ, be filled with your grace and heavenly benediction, and be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. The Lord’s Prayer (BCP 118) And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread (BCP 118) Celebrant Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia! Invitation to Communion Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Please be seated

Instruction for Receiving Communion All baptized Christians, regardless of denomination, are welcome to receive the real and living presence of Christ in this Holy Communion in one of three ways. 1. Spiritual Communion. If you cannot or prefer not to receive Physical Communion, you

are invited to make what the Early Church called “Spiritual Communion,” also described as a participation in the “Sacrament of Desire.” You can be assured, as you pray this prayer, aloud or in your heart, that you have made your communion:

Dear Jesus, I believe that you are truly present in the Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to possess you within my soul. And since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to you, together with all your faithful people gathered around the altar of Christchurch and every altar of your Church, and I embrace you with all the affections of my soul. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

2. Physical Communion now.

If you would like to receive physical communion during this morning’s service, please come forward, lower your mask as you come near the priest, and raise your mask as you return to your pew or chair.

If you are in or around your car, please come to the central side walk or to the tent. You may ask for multiple pieces of the Bread with which to communicate those in your car, giving it to them with the words, “The Body of Christ, the Bread of Heaven.” These multiple pieces will not be intincted.

Please maintain proper physical distance from other households. You may also indicate that you would prefer a blessing in lieu of Communion by crossing

your arms over your chest. 3. Physical Communion later this morning at the Rail.

You may come to the Church between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Signs will direct you to enter through the Gospel transept door (the side door closest to

the church office building). Please maintain proper social distancing if you find yourself waiting in a line at this door.

When the family in front of you has left the rail, come into the church, sanitizing your hands as you do. Come to the center of the rail, remove any mask you may be wearing, and receive while standing. You will then depart through the Epistle doors and out through the columbarium, again sanitizing your hands as you depart.
