SPIRITUAL CORNER
The Christmas season may have begun with a
silent night, but it ends with God’s voice echoing
across the sky. The heavens opened as Jesus
was baptized, and God told the world how
pleased He is with His Son.
Jesus’ baptism reminds us of our own. We are
baptized people, and that makes us different
than the unbaptized. When the baptismal water
flowed over our heads, we became new
creations in Christ. Just as today marks the start
of Jesus’ public ministry, likewise, our baptism
was the beginning of our walk with Christ. We
have the responsibility to build the Kingdom of
God and bring the Gospel to everyone we
encounter. Working together in the Church, we
help to bring about the salvation of all people.
Many of us were baptized as infants. Isn’t it
ironic that our baptism was such a momentous
occasion in our faith life, but most of us do not
remember it? Well, we do not need to
remember the details in order to live as baptized
people. Jesus’ baptism offers us the opportunity
to contemplate our own baptismal call. Are we
bearing witness to our baptism with our lives?
Are we living out our faith in our words and
actions?
Our faith life began with water, oils, fire, and
promises. Our faith life continues today as we
walk with Christ on our journey to heaven. We
may not hear the words, but hopefully we sense
God’s announcement which tells the world how
pleased He is with us.
First Reading – Isaiah speaks of the Servant whom the Lord upholds; he shall bring forth justice to the nations (Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7) or Isaiah 40:1-5, 9- 11.
Psalm — The Lord will bless his people with peace
(Psalm 29) or Psalm 104.
Second Reading — Jesus was anointed by God with the
Holy Spirit; he went out healing and doing good (Acts 10:34-38) or Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7.
Gospel — A voice comes from heaven proclaiming
Jesus as the beloved Son, with whom God is well pleased (Luke 3:15-16, 21-22).

For many weeks now, we have been celebrating
the appearance of the divine presence in human form.
As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by
the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi
from the East. Today we celebrate another showing,
later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River.
John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized
as “one mightier than I.” But he did as Jesus asked,
and the “Holy Spirit descended” and heaven’s voice
spoke to Jesus, “You are my beloved Son.” Jesus was
beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon
he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one
of the first to be called by Jesus. In today’s second
reading, he announces the heart of the message,
“peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.” Peter
was called, and you and I are called to spread that
message and to serve God’s word.

CALLED TO SERVE
o Salmo 104 (103).
predilecto”. Jesús estaba empezando su vida pública
de enseñanza y de servicio. Pronto comenzaría a

compasivo y fuerte.

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
“John answered them all, ‘I baptize you with water; but he
who is mightier than I is coming…he will baptize you with the
Holy Spirit...’” (LUKE 3:16)
The Catholic Catechism states that “Jesus’ immersion in the
water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to
themselves to do God’s will.” In other words, as baptized
Catholics there is only one gift that we need to give to Jesus –
the gift of ourselves. Surrender yourself to God, place your
trust in Him and allow the Holy Spirit to work through you for
the greater glory of God.
