THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Let us pray.

Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your

beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized

into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as

Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory

everlasting. Amen.

THE LESSONS Congregation seated

The Old Testament Lesson Genesis 1:1-5 (p. 1)

1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Mark 1:4-11 (p. 836)

Priest: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance

for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going

out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist

and ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is

mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the

Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens

being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from

heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE HOLY COMMUNIONTHE OFFERTORY

Anthem John Gardner 1917-2011

Tomorrow shall be my dancing day: I would my true love did so chanceTo see the legend of my play, To call my true love to my dance:

Sing O my love; This have I done for my true love.

Then was I born of a virgin pure, Of her I took fleshly substance; Thus was I knit to man’s nature, To call my true love to my dance:

Sing O my love; This have I done for my true love.

In a manger laid and wrapped I was, So very poor this was my chance,Betwixt an ox and a silly poor ass, To call my true love to my dance:

Sing O my love; This have I done for my true love.

Then afterwards baptized I was; The Holy Ghost on me did glance,My Father’s voice heard from above, To call my true love to my dance:

Sing O my love; This have I done for my true love.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give

thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine

in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ

our Lord.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the

company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SANCTUS S 125 Richard Proulx

Congregation kneeling

Celebrant: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have

made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word

spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your

Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the

Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us

worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of

sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

. S J D . O R G .

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had

given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This

is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to

them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is

shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this

for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

People: We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

Celebrant: And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all;

presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be

the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to

your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by

the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ,

and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the

everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the

firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is

yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

Celebrant: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Star of the heart, star in the sky, Lead to the Lamb who is reigning on high;Lord, when we praise, Lord when we cry, Lead to the Lamb who is reigning on high.

Star of the Word, star in the night, Lead to the Lamb who now rules on the right;Lamb of the feast, the Lamb of the Light, Lead to the Lamb who now rules on the right.

TODAY’S MUSICAL OFFERINGKeep in touch with SJD Music at our blog:

sjdmusic.wordpress.com.

On this the first Sunday after the Epiphany, we commemorate the Baptism of Christ,

when the Holy Spirit descended as a dove and a voice from heaven proclaimed “You

are my beloved Son; with you I am well-pleased.” As part of our commemoration,

we use the Baptism liturgy and renew our baptismal vows.

British Composer John Gardner (1917-2011) enjoyed a prolific career, crafting

numerous symphonies, operas, ballet, concertos, and choral works. He is perhaps

best known for his rhythmic and joyful setting of the old Middle English carol

“Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day,” which we hear this morning at the Offertory.

Typical of many texts from the period, this carol is told from the perspective of

Jesus looking back on the events of his life as a dance and references his baptism in

the concluding stanza.

At the Ministration, we hear the poignant words of Herbert Brokering, a Lutheran

pastor, and well-known author, playwright and poet. His “Lamb of the Light”

points forward, as it speaks of the light of the star which leads us to the Lamb of the

Passover feast who is sacrificed for our redemption and is now “reigning on high.”
