ENGINE OIL
SAE VISCOSITY RATING INDICATES ENGINE OIL VISCOSITY
An SAE visco sit y g r a d e is u se d t o sp e cif y t h e vis-
cosity of engine oil. S AE 30 specifies a single viscos-
it y en gin e oil. E n gin e oils a l so h a ve m ul tiple
viscosit ies. These are specified with a dual SAE vis-
cosity grade which indicates the cold-to-hot tempera-
ture viscosity range.

CAUTION: When using another vehicle as a
booster, do not allow vehicles to touch. Electricalsystems can be damaged on either vehicle.
TO JUMP START A DISABLED VEHICLE:
(1) R a i s e h ood on d is a b le d v eh i cl e a n d v is u a l lyinspect engine compartment for:
Generator drive belt condition and tension.
Fuel fumes or leakage, correct if necessary.
Frozen battery.
Yellow or bright color test indicator, if equipped.
Low battery fluid level.
CAUTION: If the cause of starting problem on dis-abled vehicle is severe, damage to booster vehicle
charging system can result.
(2) Wh en u si ng a n ot h er v eh icl e a s a b oos t er
source, turn off all accessories, place gear selector in
p a r k o r n eu t r a l , s e t p a r k b r a k e o r eq u iv a l en t a n d
operate engine at 1200 rpm.
(3) On disa bled vehicle, place gear selector in pa rk
or n eu t r a l a n d s et p a r k b r a k e o r eq u iv a l en t . Tu r n
OFF all accessories.(4) Connect jumper cables to booster battery. RED
clamp to posit ive terminal (+ ) . BLACK clamp to neg-
ative terminal (-). DO NOT allow clamps at opposite
end of cables to touch, electrical arc will result (Fig.
1). Review all warnings in this procedure.
(5) On disabled vehicle, connect RED jumper cable
cl a m p t o b a t t er y pos it i ve (+ ) t er m in a l. C on n ect
B L ACK ju m p er ca ble cla m p t o t h e e n g in e a s close t o
the ground cable connection as possible (Fig. 1).
CAUTION: Do not crank starter motor on disabledvehicle for more than 15 seconds, starter will over-
heat and could fail.
(6) Allow ba t t e r y in d isa bled veh icle t o ch a r g e t o
at least 12.4 volts (75% charge) before a t tempting to
st a r t e n g in e . I f e n g in e d o e s n o t st a r t w it h in 15 se c-
o n d s, s t o p cr a n k in g e n g in e a n d a l lo w st a r t e r t o co o l
(15 min.), before cranking again.

GROUND CLEARANCE
CAUTION: If vehicle is towed with wheels removed,
install lug nuts to retain brake drums.
A towed vehicle should be ra ised until lif ted wheels
a r e a m in im u m 100 m m (4 in ) f r o m t h e g r o u n d . B e
su r e t h e r e is a d e q u a t e g r o u n d cle a r a n ce a t t h e o p po-
site end of the vehicle, especially when towing over
rough terrain or steep rises in the road. If necessary,
remove the wheels from the lifted end of the vehicle
a n d low er t h e v eh icle cl os er t o t h e g rou nd , t o
increase the ground clearance at the opposite end of
t h e ve h icle. I n st a l l lu g n u t s on w h e e l a t t a ch in g st u d st o r e t a in br a k e d r u m s.
FLAT-BED TOWING RAMP ANGLEIf a vehicle with flat-bed towing equipment is used,
t h e a p pr oa ch r a m p a n g le s h ou ld n ot exceed 15
degrees.

GEAR (MANUAL TRANSMISSION).DO NOT ATTACH SLING-TYPE TOWING EQUIP-
MENT TO THE REAR OF A TJ.

TOWING-FRONT END LIFTED (SLING-TYPE)(1) Raise the rear of the vehicle off the ground and
install tow dollies under rear wheels.
(2) Atta ch T-hooks to the access holes on the out-
board side of the frame rails (Fig. 4).
(3) B efore t ightening t he chain, posit ion a protec-
t ive p a d be t w e e n t h e ch a in a n d t h e bu m p e r .
(4) Attach the safety chains to the vehicle (Fig. 5).
(5) Turn the ignit ion sw itch to t he OFF posit ion t o
unlock the steering wheel.

EMERGENCY TOW HOOKS
WARNING: REMAIN AT A SAFE DISTANCE FROM A
VEHICLE THAT IS BEING TOWED VIA ITS TOWHOOKS. THE TOW STRAPS/CHAINS COULD BREAKAND CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY.
Some J eep vehicles a re equipped with front emer-
gency tow hooks. The t ow hooks should be used for
EMERGENCY purposes only.
CAUTION: DO NOT use emergency tow hooks fortow truck hook-up or highway towing.
HOISTING RECOMMENDATIONS
Refer to th e Owners Man ual for emergency vehiclelifting procedures.
FLOOR JACKWhen properly positioned, a floor jack can be used
to lift a J eep vehicle (Fig. 6). Support the vehicle in

CAUTION: Do not attempt to lift a Jeep vehicle witha floor jack positioned under:
