Trivia NightTrivia Night & Silent Auction…

The Nodaway-Holt Elementary Faculty and Staff hope that you will save Saturday, November 11 for our annual Trivia Night. We have decided to continue this FUNdraiser because everyone has such a FUN time!

Gather your friends and enter a team for the Trivia Contest, the entry fee is $30 for a team, with a maximum of six people on a team. Teams may send their entry fee and the names of team members to the elementary school office. The trivia will be over a wide variety of topics…so just because it’s been awhile since you’ve read a textbook or are still in school, you will still have fun and probably know more than you may think! The questions will be on a wide variety of topics so anyone could have the knowledge needed to be on the winning team.

The evening of fun will be very similar to the previous years’ event. There will be snacks and door prizes. We will also have a Silent Auction with some amazing goodies to bid on. More details on the goodies in the next newsletter. At this time the gym is scheduled to open at 6 p.m. so that you can start bidding on items. Trivia begins at 7 p.m.

We hope you will join us for an evening of fun and help us raise money for our students. Mark your calendar for November 11.

Kindergarten NewsAsking questions while reading is a

key skill to building students’ understanding and comprehension. Kindergarteners have been learning how to ask questions about the text and to identify story elements such as characters, setting, and sequence. When you read with your child model how to ask questions such as, “I wonder what is going to happen next?” or “How does the character feel?” Continue encouraging your child to find the high frequency words I, the, like,

we, can, & a as well as using each in a sentence. Happy the dog has visited the kindergarten classroom to help students learn how to blend sound, specifically words with the letter sounds /s/, /a/, /m/, and /p/ in the them such as Sam, Pam, sap, map, etc.

During math, kindergarteners are practicing and applying their ability to rote count to 100, identifying the patterns on the 100’s chart, naming, writing, and putting numbers in order up to 10 as well as decomposing numbers using manipulatives up to 10 using a 5 group and some more. For example: How do you make 8 using a 5 group? 5+3.

We are working hard on writing our names using the correct size and formation. Keep working at home. There are a lot of students with neat handwriting in Kindergarten!

Parent Teacher Conferences were a success! Thanks for supporting your child’s education. It was nice to share your child’s progress with you

---Mrs. Bohannon

First Grade NewsIn 1st grade, we have been moving

right along! In reading, we have begun to blend letters together in order to make new sounds. Math has led us into the world of finding the unknown number and the memorization of our basic addition facts. Science and Social Studies have found us busy with pumpkins and the study of other countries! We are looking forward to learning more and continuing to have a blast!

---Ms. Falconer

Second Grade NewsWe have had a busy month in

Second Grade! The students have been working hard on two digit addition in math! We are also starting to count money! In reading, we have been talking about the sequence of events in a story and making inferences. We have been working hard to improve our writing, and recently wrote a story about why our school is special. Check out the students writing outside of our classroom! The students learned a lot at the

fire safety presentation put on by the Maitland and Skidmore Fire Departments! During October, the students also really enjoyed the Grandparents/Special Friends Tea. They enjoyed showing their special guest the school, classroom, what they are currently learning, and taking them to the book fair!

---Mrs. Drewes

Third Grade NewsIt’s hard to believe we already have

one quarter of third grade finished! Thank you parents and guardians for coming to parent-teacher conferences; third grade had 100% attendance! It was great to talk to you all face-to-face and to see how much you care about your children’s education!

Students are finally getting used to third grade routines and taking on more responsibilities. We have started home reading logs with a goal of 120 minutes per week, a goal several students are easily blowing out of the water! We have also begun weekly spelling tic-tac-toe where the students choose which assignments to complete on their own. The students have done a great job taking ownership of this, and the work they’ve done on their own has been reflected in excellent spelling test scores. Third graders have also been working very hard in math. We have now learned ALL of our 0-10 multiplication and division facts! We continue to work every day on drilling these facts into our heads through lots of practice and repetition. I can also tell that many kids are working on flashcards at home, and I encourage parents to continue to do this to make math much easier for your children moving forward.

Last, but not least…. DOJO DOLLARS! Third grade has really been cleaning out Mrs. Emerson’s bank by earning Dojo Dollars through positive behavior! There is a lot of excitement in the classroom every Friday when we have payday and then items to buy or bid on in an auction. If anyone would like to donate small trinkets (think Dollar Tree!) or snacks that could be used in our classroom store and auctions, I would greatly appreciate the help! I have seen such positive

improvements in this class since the beginning of the year thanks to Class Dojo, and I want to continue to offer incentives that excite the my students.

---Mrs. Emerson

Fourth Grade NewsIt was a great seeing you at Parent

Teacher Conferences last week. Remember if you have any questions please email or call the school. In math we are in the start of our division unit. Students are understanding the importance of a remainder and putting our multiplication skill to the test. Please be practicing math facts daily! We have started the book Wonder in reading. Wonder is about a boy named August who looks different, in the book he deals with fitting in, bullies and the typical middle school issues. This book is about to become a movie in a few short weeks! In Social Studies we continue to learn more about early America and the Declaration of Independence, each student is representing a colonies and war is about to erupt. In Science we will move to module 2 where students will learn about the different types of energy and how energy is converted.

Every night your child should be reading 20minutes and practicing their multiplication and division facts. Parents: November book reports are due on November 30th! Please help your child edit and proofread their report! Information will be sent home on November 1st. Trivia Question (Ask your student and write the answer in your child’s planner for them to get an extra treat): What is an inelastic collision?

---Ms. Frueh

Fifth Grade NewsHello from 5th grade again! We have

had a SPOOK-tacular time learning this month. We are finishing Bridge to Terabithia, and the students have shown so much maturity through the sadness and unexpected turn that the book has given us. I have really enjoyed the personal class discussions we have been able to have. We

finished a math unit just before the end of the first quarter and have begun working with fractions again! In science, we have been exploring Mystery Science, which is a very hands on approach to inquiring about different scientific concepts. The students have done a great job putting on their critical thinking caps in order to piece concepts together.

We will be taking a short break in our Mystery Science to learn about the health benefits of trees. Mrs. Lewis and I have partnered together to participate in a lesson sequence and poster contest. The fifth graders will learn and explore Missouri trees and the great things they do for our health. They will then take part in the poster contest with Mrs. Lewis! The math lesson we have just started requires students to do division and multiplication of fractions. In order to complete the operations with fractions, it is so crucial that students are fluent with their facts. I am sure that they will be more successful! Encourage your children to practice their facts nightly. I am also starting a reading log for the 5th graders. The log requires parent initials for the minutes to count! Students will earn punches on a punch card and turn them in for rewards! Be on the lookout for more information!

--- Ms. Conley

Sixth Grade NewsHappy Fall! The leaves may be

falling, but 6th grade is soaring! We are currently working with operations which involve whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.  We are also focusing on which type of operation is needed when reading a word problem.  We have finished Scott O’Dell’s, Island of the Blue Dolphins. Our next reading adventure will be Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet.  We have been working hard in class to complete our 40 Book Challenge, by reading at least two books a month. In Social Studies we are getting ready to delve into ancient civilizations and their impact on the modern world.  Lastly, “verb it’s what you do!” and what we are studying in Language Arts. After we finish our verbs refresher, we will begin our

narrative essays.  I hope this newsletter finds you all doing well!
