Section 1.1 WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS
WARNINGS
• Read this manual in its entirety before operating the Hurricane Filtration System.
• Misuse, improper operation, and/or improper monitoring of this system could result in serious injury, death, or other serious reactions to the end users of the equipment.
• Routine maintenance of the system is required to protect the system from over-pressurizing and over-temperature which could result in damage to the facility, injury to staff, or the end users of the equipment.
CAUTIONS
• When used as a medical device, Federal law restricts this device to sale by or on the authority of a physician. Per CFR 801.109 (b)(1).
• All local, state, and federal regulations regarding the installation and operation of this system must be observed.
• To be used only for pre-treatment of water prior to reverse osmosis (RO).

Section 1.2 THEORY OF OPERATION
The Hurricane Filter was designed to remove particulate matter from the water source using a combination of cyclonic separation before cartridge filtration. The filter is housed in a stainless-steel housing. The system consists of (1) 19-1/2” H x 7-3/4” Dia., 0.35 to 5 micron reusable filter cartridges. The system is capable of trapping large quantities of particulate matter while maintaining a high flow rate with little pressure drop.

Section 1.3 SYSTEM COMPONENTS
Inlet Pressure Gauge (Analog / Digital): Monitors the pressure of pre-filtered water
Outlet Pressure Gauge (Analog / Digital): Monitors the pressure of post filtered water. Used in conjunction with the Inlet Pressure reading, can determine when filters are needing to be changed when the pressure difference between the two gauges is ≥15 psi.

Section 3.1 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
Routine inspection of the system is recommended. Follow all facility procedures regarding regular inspection of water system equipment.
This component should be checked every day for pressure drop, as this is the primary indicating factor of when the filters should be changed. Routine replacement of the filters will be required as necessary to maintain <15 psi pressure drop across filter. For optimum performance the drain valve should be opened routinely by hand.
When changing the filter, the inside of the filter housing should be wiped down with a clean cloth using either water or a mild (1%) bleach solution.

Section 3.2 SILT DENSITY INDEX TESTING
The following is a procedure on how to run an SDI test:
1. Connect test apparatus to water source to be tested.
2. Place test filter in filter holder, purge air from system.
3. Ensure the pressure gauge reads 40 psi, adjust regulator if necessary.
4. Once air is purged, turn valve off.
5. Place line from bottom of filter holder into empty 500 ml graduated cylinder.
6. With a stopwatch, time how many seconds it takes to fill the graduated cylinder to the 500ml mark. This will be the “Initial Time” (Ti).
7. Now, remove the tube from the graduated cylinder, and place in/above a drain.
8. Run the water to drain for exactly 15 minutes.
9. After the 15 minutes are up, time how long it takes to collect 500ml of water. This the “Final Time” (Tf).
10. Now, utilizing the above times, make the following calculation:
Divide the Initial Time by the final Time Ti/Tf = “X”
Subtract “X” from 1 1 - “X “= “Y”
Divide “Y” by 15 minutes (Total Time) “Y”/15 = “Z”
Multiply “Z” times 100 “Z “ x 100 = SDI EXAMPLE: Initial time to fill 500 ml is 17 seconds.
Final time to fill 500 ml is 35 seconds.
Calculations will show a pressure drop over the calculated time period, if there is
an issue with silt.
17/35 = .4857; 1-.4857 = 0.5143; 0.5143/15min. = 0.03438 x 100 = SDI of 3.428

Section 3.3 FILTER CHANGE
To change the filter cartridge: 1. Close both Inlet and Outlet Valves.
2. Drain water from housing by opening drain valve on the lower portion of the housing.
3. Vent housing by opening labcock on top of housing.
4. Remove wing nuts and lid. Hold cross bar in retainer nut and pull upward to remove filter cartridge and top plate from filter housing.
5. Replace with new filter cartridge.
6. Apply a light coat of silicone lubricant to the O-ring and fasten top back to housing assembly. Do not over tighten!
7. Close drain valve.
8. Slowly open the Inlet Valve allowing the housing to fill and expel air thru the labcock port on the top of the housing.
9. When all of the air is purged from the housing close the labcock port on the top of the housing then open the Inlet and Outlet Valves fully.
