Activity 1 – Warm-Up (7 minutes)

T asks Ss questions about their Easter holidays and then checks homework and makes

error corrections, if any. T then gets into the topic by reading a set of jokes on the topic of

preferences. T then asks Ss to look at some advertising posters in the textbook (pages 92-93) and

match the pictures with the appropriate events. T asks Ss to compare and contrast the pictures

orally and briefly answer the question: Which of these events would you like to see?

Activity 2 – Presentation (10 minutes)

T highlights the grammar structures usually used to make suggestions and express

preferences and writes them on the blackboard. T points the fact that would like/would prefer are

followed by a long infinitive (infinitive with to) whereas would rather  is followed by a short

infinitive (infinitive without to). T also has Ss pay attention to the spelling of long and short

forms: e.g.:  I would like/would prefer/would rather… vs. I’d like/’d prefer/‘d rather… T has Ss

take a look at the Grammar flash section (page 95) and make rules.

Activity 3 – Practice (15 minutes)

T asks Ss to work in pairs and interview one another using a short set of hypothetical

questions in order to state their preferences Ss compare answers with their partners. T encourages

Ss to exchange opinions on the topic, argue their point of view and give examples to support

their ideas. Then, T has Ss revise vocabulary connected to leisure activities and work on gap

filling exercises to practise the grammar structures under discussion (ex. 3/page 65 and ex.6/page

66  – Snapshot Elementary Language Booster). T writes any new words on the blackboard and

 provides additional explanations, where necessary.

Activity 4 – Production (8 minutes)

T has Ss work in groups of 3. Each Ss is given a  Romance Quiz . Ss must take turns toask and answer using would like/would prefer/would rather . T makes error corrections where

necessary. After answering all questions, Ss calculate their scores to discover just how romantic

they are. T asks the class as a whole “Who would prefer…?” and “Who would rather…?”

questions and elicits answers.

Activity 5 – Follow-Up (8 minutes)

T has Ss work in groups and list popular TV shows. Ss must put the list in their order of

preference, their favourite first and their least favourite last. Each group discusses the list and

gives arguments to support their choice. T makes a general appreciation of Ss’ work during class.

T helps Ss draw conclusions on the topic discussed and assigns homework.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT (2 minutes):

Ss must devise a travel planner and write about a holiday destination. They must give

details about the trip: number of days, main attractions, etc. and explain why they choose that

particular destination, using prefer, would prefer and would rather to express preferences. (5-10

lines)
