will have the opportunity to hear 26 concerts across five series encompassing classical, early, contemporary, jazz, and world music as UCP honors its past and looks to the future in its 75th anniversary season.

This season, UCP celebrates its history, welcoming back beloved performers from past seasons and highlighting treasured chamber works. The Tallis Scholars present a holiday program of Renaissance music in Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, and Steven Isserlis returns to the University to perform the complete Beethoven cello sonatas with the scholar and keyboardist Robert Levin. The Classic Concert Series welcomes back the Takács Quartet and long-time former ensemble-in-residence the Pacifica Quartet, and clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein returns with colleagues to perform Messaien’s Quatuor pour le fin du temps. UChicago Presents has long championed the next generation of artists with Chicago debut performances. This season, Chopin International Piano Competition winner Seong-Jin Cho offers his first Chicago performance on the Classic Concert Series. This season also features other up-and-coming talent including the rising young piano trio, Trio Céleste, and two winners of the Thelonious Monk Institute Competition, the young singer Jazzmeia Horn and Chicago native Marquis Hill.

UCP builds for the future with the introduction of Music Without Borders, a new global music series blending world traditions with contemporary styling, and with concerts from the new Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition. This season also welcomes the newest Don Michael Randel Ensemble in Residence, Sweet Honey in the Rock. As in seasons past, UChicago Presents aims to expand the concert experience with pre-concert lectures and post-concert talk-backs, cross-genre collaborations, and jazz listening sessions throughout the season.

joined by violist Richard O’Neill and cellist Edward Arron, round out the series.

Returning to UChicago this season are Cappella Pratensis, the Tallis Scholars, and Steven Isserlis on the Howard Mayer Brown International Early Music Series. Renowned for historically informed performances, Cappella Pratensis opens the Early Music Series with a program exploring the music of Josquin des Prez and his contemporaries, and the Tallis Scholars bring A Renaissance Christmas to Rockefeller Chapel in December. Later in the season, Steven Isserlis and Robert Levin perform the complete Beethoven sonatas over two nights on a period-accurate cello and fortepiano. In April, British consort Atalante presents a semi-staged musical portrait of seventeenth century Rome. Violinist Rachel Barton Pine and harpsichordist Jory Vinikour close the series with Bach violin and harpsichord sonatas.

Jazz at the Logan brings the full spectrum of contemporary jazz to the Logan Center Performance Hall with performances by some of the biggest names on the scene. Six-time Grammy®-winning bassist Christian McBride opens the series with his newest quartet project, New Jawn. Next on the series are two Thelonious Monk Competition winners in separate concerts: Jazzmeia Horn makes her Chicago debut at the Logan in November, and Chicago native Marquis Hill brings his Blacktet to the series in February. All-star post-bop septet The Cookers presents a program of originals in April, and Chris Potter Underground Orchestra ends the series with a May performance.

This season UChicago Presents introduces Music Without Borders, a new series that brings sounds from around the globe to Chicago, showcasing contemporary artists who blend world traditions with modern styling. Rounding out the season, Iraqi oud player Rahim AlHaj, a 2015 National Heritage Fellow, presents some of his latest work with ensemble combining traditional Iraqi maqams with contemporary styling and influence.

performances expressed through song, dance, and sign language. In addition to workshops and performances with the University’s vocal ensembles, panel discussions with the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture, community music workshops, and educational concerts for local K-12 students throughout the school year, Sweet Honey in the Rock will perform in a public performance on the Mandel Hall stage as part of the UChicago Presents season.

In its sixth decade presenting contemporary music, beginning with the Contemporary Chamber Players under Ralph Shapey in 1964 and continuing as Contempo in 2002 under Shulamit Ran and in 2015 under Marta Ptaszyńska, the University of Chicago begins a new chapter with the Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition (CCCC). The CCCC is a dynamic, collaborative, interdisciplinary environment for the creation, performance, and study of new music. Augusta Read Thomas serves as the Center’s Director, with support from a curatorial board of UChicago faculty, staff, and artistic leaders. Beginning with the 2018/19 season, UChicago Presents is delighted to be part of this exciting new era in the University of Chicago's distinguished tradition of creating and presenting contemporary music by offering a new series of concerts produced by the CCCC.
