Ordinary Time - B

In week 8 of my summer sacred study series on the 4 Eucharistic Prayers for Various Needs [EPFVN], which is one EP with 4 themes, we reflect on the first part after the Mystery of Faith acclamation which is sung or said by the people. This second half of each EPFVN, the part from the ‘Mystery of Faith’ acclamation to the ‘Amen,’ is also the same in the 4 EPFNV- with an added section unique to each one. Each particular set of petitions, which we will reflect on in a few weeks, matches the theme of each particular Preface; these additions come right before the Remembrance of the Dead and of all the Saints which is also the same in all four EPFVN. Here’s the first part of the second half of the EP which stays the same in all four variations.

Eucharistic Prayer For Various Needs - Post- Consecration

Then [after the Consecration] the Priest, with hands extended, says:

Therefore, holy Father, as we celebrate the memorial of Christ your Son, our

Savior, whom you led through his Passion

and Death on the Crossto the glory of the Resurrection,

and whom you have seated at your right hand,

we proclaim the work of your love until he comes again

and we offer you the Bread of lifeand the Chalice of blessing.

Look with favor on the oblation of your Church,

in which we show forth the paschal Sacrifice of Christ

that has been handed on to us, and grant that, by the power

of the Spirit of your love,we may be counted now

and until the day of eternityamong the members of your Son,

in whose Body and Blood we have communion.

”We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe.” As I wrote a few weeks ago, the

first paragraph above is called the Anamnesis. The opposite of the Greek word ‘anamnesis’ is ‘amnesia’ which means ‘to forget’ - so an ‘anamnesis’ helps us to remember … so don’t forget it!] The Crux of Christianity. After the people make their acclamation in the ‘Mystery of Faith’ which is addressed to Christ [“…we proclaim your Death, O Lord…” or “Save us, Savior…”] the Priest resumes the ‘orans’ or hands extended position as he addresses God the Father. The Priest both remembers and re-offers the eternal Sacrifice by which we are saved: the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ, made present again in the ‘Bread of life’ and the ‘Chalice of blessing’. For the core doctrine of our Faith and main purpose of Mass is to make Christ present so we can offer Him, receive Him - and become Him, What’s an Oblation? By definition, an oblation is the highest form of an offering or gift, that is: a sacrifice, presented to a god by a designated leader on behalf of all the people. While it is commonly believed that in ancient times all sorts of animals - and even humans were sacrificed to appease angry, offended gods, that may be mostly an urban legend. The Father did not mandate the crucifixion of His Son so He could be appeased … but to show - to PROVE His boundless love for us! At Mass we renew Christ’s sacrifice - and join ourselves and our oblations primarily to show our love for God. We Must Hand On What Is Handed On To Us. Last week I mentioned how in Saint Paul’s account of the Last Supper he wrote. “I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you.” [1 Corinthians 11:24] So we must first accurately RECEIVE all Jesus did and handed onto His Apostles - and then accurately HAND ON all that is entrusted to us. That’s why the Church is so insistent on being faithful to what she did not create but RECEIVED from the Lord Himself! Another Epiclesis: Send Your Holy Spirit On Us. After recalling the main events of our salvation, the Priest then asks God the Holy Spirit to unite all who are soon to enter into Holy Communion with the Eucharistic Lord and each other. For receiving Holy Communion presupposes we are one Body in Christ, strengthens our union with God and

one another, and outwardly expresses that union for all to see. Next week: a break in our summer series to honor our Blessed Mother’s Assumption into heaven.

Brief Eucharistic Adoration at the end of Masses

July 26, August 2, August 9, August 16The 17th, 18th, 19th & 20th Sundays in Ordinary

Time - B

In the 3-year cycle of Sunday readings, Year ‘A’ highlights Matthew’s Gospel; the current Year ‘B’ is Mark and Year ‘C’ is Luke. Mark’s Gospel, the shortest, does not cover the year, so for 5 weeks we read from Chapter 6 of John’s Gospel: the ‘Bread of Life Discourse’ in which Jesus declares, “I am the Bread of Life!” For 4 weeks we will end Mass with a brief taste of an ancient ritual: Eucharistic Adoration. [The theme of the 5th week is less Eucharistic, so we will not have Adoration.]

Jesus often said we need to be in His Presence: “Come to me, all who labor … and I will give you rest.” [Matthew 11:28] “I am with you always until the end of time.” [28:20] “Can you not watch one hour with me?” [Mark 14:37] “Remain in me as I remain in you.”

[John 15:4] How blessed are they who ‘make a visit’ to the Blessed Sacrament … just to be in Christ’s Real Presence! Each weekend’s Mass will end similarly: after Communion has been distributed, the Blessed Sacrament will remain on the Altar as all remain kneeling. Then all stand for the Prayer after Communion, [announcements are made earlier] and then kneel again to sing a hymn of various traditions that adores or extols Christ’s Real Presence. After the Sacrament is reposed in the Tabernacle, all stand for the Blessing, Dismissal and an instrumental Recessional. On July 26 and August 2 the Hosts will be left in the usual ciborium for Adoration; no incense is used; on August 9 and 16 we will ‘expose’ the Sacrament in a monstrance, which requires at least 4 candles and incense. On August 9 Mass will end as above; on the 16th the Priest, donning a humeral veil, will impart the Eucharistic Blessing. May this taste of this venerable rite help us better appreciate Christ’s Real Presence in the Eucharist, and encourage more people to frequently ‘visit’ the Tabernacle during the week to ‘watch one hour’ [Mark 14:37] with our Eucharistic Lord.Note: since Christ is equally present when the Host is ‘exposed’ in a monstrance, in a ciborium or in the Tabernacle, a SINGLE knee genuflection is the proper sign of reverence; the ‘double knee’ genuflection during adoration, taught to many of us, has been suppressed. [C.f.: Order for the Solemn Exposition of the Holy Eucharist, #9, from the document Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside of Mass, #84.]

People GiveFor Not Going To Church

We all try to find ways to justify our lack of Mass attendance and believe (momentarily) that our justification will convince ourselves and others of their correctness. Today we continue our look at some of the most popular excuses along with a humorous and realistic response.5: Sunday is the Only Day I can Sleep inOur parish has Mass times conducive to sleeping in - Saturday 5:00 pm and Sunday 11:30 am. We all know if there is something we really want to do on a Sunday - like your soccer game, fishing, golfing, a day in the City - we will drag our sorry, tired selves out of bed to do it. Spare a little time for God who gives you everything; give God 50 minutes of the time that He gave you in the first place to say “Thank you!” You can do it.+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

This Weekend’s ReadingsEighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15The Israelites complain that Moses led them to the desert and there is no food for them there. Then the Lord told Moses he would

rain down bread from heaven so the people might know that “I, the Lord, am your God.” God did as he had promised and in the morning the people found the bread that he had given them.Second Reading: Ephesians 4:17, 20-24Paul tells the Ephesians that they must give up their old way of life and live in accordance with the truth that Christ has brought them. He reminds them to acquire a spiritual way of thinking, and to remember that they are made in God’s image and act accordingly.Gospel: John 6:24-35The people Jesus had fed on five loaves of bread follow him, and Jesus tells them they should not be looking for perishable food, but for spiritual food. The people want a sign that they should believe in him. He explains that he is the bread of life, and anyone who believes will not experience hunger or thirst. The people did not fully understand that he was speaking in the spiritual sense, and not of actual food.

It helps spouses uncover or re-awaken the love, trust and commitment that originally brought them together. The program is highly successful in not only saving hurting marriages, but also in bringing reconciliation to couples who have already separated or even divorced. For confidential information about the September program beginning with a

+ + + + + + +Stewardship of Talent

Stewardship is also about realizing the gift of our abilities and talents and then sharing them with others. Sister Thea Bowman used to say, “If you know how to do something, show someone who doesn’t know how to do it. If you know how to read, teach someone who doesn’t.”

2015 Empty Bowl Event on Friday, October 23

Preparations are underway for the annual "The Empty Bowl" event which will be sponsored by the Flemington Area Food Pantry on Friday, October 23 at the Flemington Methodist Church on the corner of Main St. and Maple Avenue in Flemington. The lunch highlights bowls created by local potters which participants can take home with them, as a reminder that there are those who have "empty bowls" in our area. This will be the 19th year that the community has been invited to help fight hunger by sharing a meal of soup, salad, bread and homemade desserts, all furnished by local restaurants or made by Food Pantry volunteers. This year's lunch will feature soups from Susan Peterson, owner of Teaberry's Restaurant in Flemington (and winner of the 2014 Flemington Rotary Soup Cook-Off) and from long-time donor Mark Drabich, whose contribution will emphasize ingredients from his Metropolitan Seafood Company in Lebanon. Innovations for 2015, in addition to the extended hours, include a new dessert menu and a box of homemade cookies with each take-out lunch order. There is also a pottery sale, which profits the pantry, at the church during the luncheon hours which have been extended to 11 AM to 3 PM.You may purchase tickets for $25 for adults and $7 for children in advance on the Food

Pantry website, www.flemingtonfoodpantry.org, or by visiting the Pantry during the hours of operation from 9 to 11:30 AM, Monday through Thursday. The Pantry is located at 154 Route 31 North in Flemington, behind Walmart. Tickets will also be available at the door. Take-out orders, which will contain soup, salad, bread, homemade cookies and a bowl, will also be available.+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

for this historic first visit of Pope Francis to the United States

Seats are still available. The Diocese of Metuchen invites you to participate in a pilgrimage to Philadelphia for the Mass to be celebrated there by Pope Francis on September 27, 2015. The Holy Father announced last November that he will come to Philadelphia for the eighth World Meeting of Families being held there. He will celebrate a public Mass with a million or more participants on Sunday, September 27 on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, in full view of the crowds arrayed from the museum down the Ben Franklin Parkway. No tickets are required for the Mass. No general seating will be available. The Mass is a standing event. The Diocese has made arrangements for bus transportation from various locations throughout the diocese. A number of parishes/groups are also running bus trips to the Papal Mass. The Papal Mass is tentatively scheduled for 4 pm. The exact schedule is not yet available from the event planners in Philadelphia, but we anticipate very early departure times. Once we have a clear picture of the number of people who want to participate from each site, we will assign bus coordinators and send confirmation materials with precise details. Prayer and reflection resources will also be provided to enable pilgrims to share a common experience as the Diocesan Church in preparation for and on the day of this special event. The round trip bus reservation and pilgrimage package will be approximately $55. per person. Each participant is responsible for their own meal costs on that
