In week 10 of my summer sacred study series on the 4 Eucharistic Prayers for Various Needs [EPFVN], which is one EP with 4 themes, we reflect on the special intentions particular to EPFVN - I: The Church on the Path of Unity. These inserts are added after the anamnesis [remember], offering and epiclesis [calling down the Holy Spirit on those entering into Holy Communion] and before we remember the dead and the Saints.

EPFVN-I: The Church on the Path of Unity- Special Intentions

The Priest, with hands extended, says:Lord, renew your Church

(which is in Metuchen) by the light of the Gospel.

Strengthen the bond of unity between the faithful and the pastors of your

people,together with N. our Pope, N. our

Bishop, and the whole Order of Bishops,

The Church of Metuchen. The special insert in this EP allows for the optional naming of the local Diocese or Archdiocese. An Archdiocese is merely a Diocese that is comprised of a larger, older or more prestigious area; its ‘head’ Bishop or ‘Ordinary’ is called an Archbishop. There are five Roman Catholic ‘districts’ in New Jersey: the Archdiocese of Newark, which has 218 Parishes and 756 Priests [2013 statistics] and the Dioceses of Camden [70 Parishes/281 Priests], Metuchen [94/201], Paterson [111/340] and Trenton [109/304]. Our entire State is united in what is called a ‘Province’ - which the Archbishop of Newark leads under his title ‘Metropolitan.’ While an Archbishop has an office with great prestige, he has immediate jurisdiction only over his own Diocese. But as the Metropolitan he: insures that his suffragan [subordinate] Dioceses are vigilant in the faith and Church law; informs the Holy Father of any major problems in the other Dioceses

and may, with the Pope’s permission, ‘visit’ or ‘check out’ the other Dioceses for Rome; appoints a Diocesan Administrator when the suffragan Diocese has no Bishop and installs its newly appointed Bishop; performs other special duties as circumstances warrant as when all the Bishops of the State meet, he ‘chairs’ or runs the meeting. The insert in this EP prays for the renewal and unity of each Parish or Diocese organization with its local Bishop, who is our visible ‘tie’ to the most prestigious Diocese of all: the Church of Rome, whose Bishop is the Pope. In every EP, both the Bishop of Rome and the local Bishop are always mentioned by name; it is optional to add the names of Coadjutor and Auxiliary Bishops in that local Diocese. A Coadjutor is like a ‘Bishop-in-waiting; he is already a Bishop, but does not take over the Diocese until the current ‘Ordinary’ retires, resigns or dies. Again, while each Ordinary or ‘head’ Bishop of the Diocese is somewhat autonomous, at his installation he promises obedience and respect to the Bishop of Rome and is obligated to maintain unity with all his brother Bishops throughout the whole world. Through this EP’s insert the faithful and the pastors’ of the Church pledge to strengthen our ‘bond of unity’ by our words and deeds and our prayerful support for all Bishops in their daunting task of fostering, maintaining, and deepening the Church’s unity. Light of the Gospel. The whole Church, united with and subject to our Bishops, must reflect and shine the ‘light of the Gospel’ - its divine values, hopes and truth - into every form of this world’s darkness. No Christian is exempt from this mandate to enlighten world laws and business practices, education and forms of entertainment with our Lord’s teachings and example. A Sign of Unity in a Broken World. There are many ways by which we must ‘enlighten’ our world; primary among them are: our vote for those in public office; our investment in and support of every human endeavor; and above all our example. So the way a Diocese and a Parish and every one of their respective organizations or groups conducts itself is crucial - for it must give witness to our unity with God and one another - and total devotion to the Gospel. Which is why

“If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today whom you will serve…As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” [Joshua 24:15]When we commit to serve the Lord, we must be willing to become a partner in the work of the Lord. A partner is a person who invests their time, talent and treasure. If we say we serve God, we must actually do something and not merely talk about it!

Cecil the Lion and Planned Parenthood:Why The Double Standard?

No one likes to see the senseless killing of animals, but why is the outcry in the media so one sided? While officials in President Obama’s administration are offering to help the Zimbabwean government investigate the high-profile killing of a lion, the President still supports [PP] Planned Parenthood. He has also threatened to veto any action that stops PP’s funding. And did you know the judge who forbad those possessing videos of PP’s heinous practices from releasing them was appointed by President Obama, and raised [according to Public Citizen] $230,000 to support him. Where’s the TRUTH in our media? Do pregnant women and babies have to dress like lions to be kept safe, protected and alive? God bless America - and pray for her! Mary Immaculate, pray for us!

This Weekend’s ReadingsTwenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

1st Reading: Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18bJoshua gathered all the tribes of Israel and told them if it did not please them to serve God, then they must decide who they would serve. The people claimed that God had brought them out of slavery and protected them on their journey. Therefore, they would serve, the Lord their God, and no one else.2nd Reading: Ephesians 5:21-32 or 5:2a, 25-32Husbands and wives should love one another as Christ loved the Church. They should nourish and care for each other as Christ cared for the church. Through the union between the two, they become one.Gospel: John 6:60-69Many of Jesus' followers were still disturbed by his teaching of the living bread, which they could not yet fully understand. Jesus explained that the Spirit gives life, and flesh is unimportant. Some of the disciples decided to leave. Jesus asked if the Twelve also wanted to leave. Although they do not completely understand yet, they have enough faith in Jesus to stay because they believe he is God's holy one.

RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Have you or anyone you know been considering the possibility of becoming a member of the Catholic Church?

Is there someone in your life with whom you’d like to share their Catholic faith?

Have you been coming to Mass for years and feel that now is the time for you to become Catholic?

Have you been experiencing a desire to receive Jesus in the Eucharist?

Whatever your reasons might be for choosing to become Catholic, beneath that choice is God who is calling you to “Come and see!”

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the way in which adults become fully active, participating members of the Catholic Church.

It helps adults grow in their relationship with God, become familiar with Catholic teachings and practices, get acquainted with people in the parish and get involved in service with the parish and wider community.

Through this process non-Christian adults are prepared for Baptism, Confirmation and first Eucharist, and non-Catholic Christians and Catholics who are only baptized are prepared for Confirmation and first Eucharist, which takes place at the Easter Vigil.

People GiveFor Not Going To Church

We all try to find ways to justify our lack of Mass attendance and believe (momentarily)

that our justification will convince ourselves and others of their correctness. We continue our look at some of the most popular excuses along with a humorous and realistic response.8: Having To Go To Church Is A Man-Made RuleThe second chapter of the first book of the Bible says that we are supposed to keep the Sabbath because God modeled it for us - not because He needed it, but because He knows that we do. In Exodus and Deuteronomy we have the Ten Commandments listed for us. Number three is “keep holy the Sabbath.” And, we have Jesus at the Last Supper saying, “Do this in memory of me.” [Luke 22:19] Every time Jesus met someone after the Resurrection, they recognized him in “the breaking of the bread.” The Apostles, from the first days of the Resurrection set Sunday aside for Eucharist. Mass never wasn’t a part of who we are. Even some Atheist groups are now having weekly meetings for community and some sort of ritual! We as people are hard-wired for community, prayer and God; and Mass is how Catholics do it!

Elijah’s Promise Soup Kitchen in New Brunswick

The Knights of Columbus Council 15540 at SEAS is pleased to announce our Third Annual Charity Golf Event is nearly upon us. Last year, over $6,500 was raised to fund the many outreach programs of the council: Elijah’s Promise, Lyon's VA Hospital, Life Choices in Phillipsburg, the Hunterdon Drug Awareness Program, the Home for Battered Woman, Immaculata H.S., and the Center for Great Expectations. This is our single largest fundraising event of the year. So, in order to continue supporting these programs, we are asking everyone who can participate as a Sponsor to please send a check to Tim Connolly at 48 Copper Penny Rd. Flemington, NJ 08822. The fun begins Monday, September 21st at Beaver Brook Country Club. Play is open to all. Pamphlets with details will be handed out after this week's Masses. As many have requested, this year we will have a dinner only option so more may participate.
