The study sought to assess students’ use of social media and its effects on the
academic performance of Grade 11 students of Baguio Central University. Questionnaire was
used for collecting the data. Out of 45 copies of the questionnaire distributed, all of them are
retrieved. The study revealed that majority of the respondents is using social media. The study
further confirmed that most of the respondents visit their social media accounts using their
phones and spend between 2 to 3 hours a day. In addition, the study revealed that the use of
social media sites had affected academic performance of the respondents a little and there was
indirect relationship between the uses of social media sites on their academic performance. The
study recommends among others that students with mobile phones having internet should be
encouraged to use it to supplement their researches rather than chatting with friends and
scrolling on their newsfeeds all the time. Students should be encouraged to limit the time they
spend on their social media sites per day and advise them to do their school works instead.
Since the use of social media sites had affected the academic work of the students, they would
need to be introduced to different materials or ways that can help them academically.

CHAPTER I
The Introduction
Background of the Study
Many people today are enjoying the improvements in communication because of
technology. Modern technology in communication connects the countries into the fast process
of sending and receiving information. But these improvements have two sides, the positive and
negative sides. There are many social Medias that help people to be better informed to the new
updates leading to world developments. Social networking sites include: Facebook, twitter,
yahoo messenger, skype, messenger, google talk, and google messenger. These some
networking sites are used by most people to interact with friends, families and other people. The
world changed so fast because of technology that makes man explore the wide area or
knowledge.
There is a direct relationship exists between social media usage and the academic
performance of students in universities. Academic performance or achievement or achievement
is the outcome of education, where students achieve their educational goals. Academic
performance is commonly measured by the students’ grade or assessment. There the darker
side of technological improvement has resulted to bad effects such as addiction, setback or real
values of life, with so many social networking sites displayed on the internet, students are
tempted to abandon their homework and focused on chatting online with friends. Online social
networking sites focus on building social groups among people who share interests and/or
13
activities. But many students nowadays are addicted to the online trends especially on
Facebooks and other social Medias.
Today, most students possess Facebook accounts. The reason most of them perform
badly in school because of these social medias or they blame the poor quality or teachers.
There is a little or no change that someone can change or stop social media today because
students are almost 24 hours online everywhere. Hence, most students’ academic performance
suffers from distraction of social media. This means, the more students use social media, the
more they influence their studies, given the fact that friends from social media also influence on
each other.
Statement of the Problem
The researchers seek to know if using social Medias has effects on the academic
performances of the students. How it affects them and why it affects their academic
performances. So after this study, we can conduct possible solutions on how they can reduce
the time they spend in using their social media accounts and focus on their studies.
Research Questions
The following questions were raised:
1. What are the effects of social media on the academic performance of the grade 11
students?
2. What are the positive and negative effects of social media?
3. Does the time they spend on using their social media accounts affect one’s academic
performance?
14
4. Does the social media network that the students use are more exposed to influence their
academic performance?
Theoretical Background
This study was guided by the following theory:
SOCIAL INFORMATION PROCESSING (SIP) THEORY by Joseph Walther (1992)
Discusses how people get to know one another online, without nonverbal cues, and how
they develop and manage relationships in the computer-mediated environment. Social
information processing theory explains how individuals use computer‐mediated communication
to develop interpersonal impressions and to advance relational communication over time online.
The theory focuses on how communicators adapt to the absence of nonverbal cues when using
a medium that is generally restricted to textual symbols. The theory stipulates that the
information processing of such code systems requires more time than face‐to‐face
communication in order to achieve similar levels of interpersonal development. This entry
reviews its basic tenets, empirical support, theoretical revisions, challenges from alternative
theoretical perspectives, and implications of newer forms of computer‐mediated communication
for the theory's status.

Scope and Delimitation
The focus of the research work is to primarily study the influence or maybe the effects of
social media on the academic performance of the students. The study covers only the grade 11
students in Baguio Central University. The social media usage of the students is limited as they
perform responsibilities in school.
Definition of Terms
Media- are all of those media technologies that are intended to reach a large audience
by mass communication
Academic- it is connected with studying from books as opposed by practical work
Social Media- forms of electronic communication which facilitate interactive base on
certain interests
Assessment- act of making a judgement about something
Site- internet addresses at which an individual or organization provides information to
others
Chat- to talk over by internet by sending messages back and forth in a chat room
Trend- to extend in a general direction
Significance of the Study
16
This study is significant for the students, teachers, and parents. This will help the
students evaluate themselves and realize if they already consume a lot of time in using their
social media accounts instead of studying. It is also important for the teachers and parents to
know for them to control and formulate possible solutions for the student. Also, for them to know
the effects of too much use of social media to their health and studies.

Review of Related Literature
The Effects of Social Media on Students’ Behavior; Facebook as a Case Study
Social networks are one of the most used communication methods of today’s world.
Their use in the different fields has been examined in several research studies. This study aims
to examine the effects of social media on students’ behaviors which will mainly focus on
Facebook. Whether there is a positive relationship between confidences, social media
participation and social media related behaviors will also be assessed with regard to using
Facebook. There is a huge number of individual on the web who is interested to gather
information about others and meet other individuals to assemble, share data and encounters on
many areas and topics. The social media websites are additionally different in the ways in which
they appear and join new data and specialized devices, similar to potable access, blogging,
photograph and video sharing. The detailed study of literature revealed that the major factors on
which social media has its impact in the life of students include their academic performance,
social behavior, health and privacy issues.
The Effects of Social Networking on Students’ Academic Performance: The Perspective of Faculty Members of Periyar University, Salem
Piotrowski, Chris (2015) designed to analysis the gauge the scope of the research
domain of education typology by conducting a content analysis of dissertation research in this
17
area. A keyword search of the term “social media” yielded 662 studies represented in Pro
Quest’s Dissertations and these databases. The author summarized the major outcome findings
of 29 dissertations that had a specific focus on SM-education issues. Of these, only 2 studies
reported any negative views by either students or faculty on the implementation of Sm platforms
for academic purposes. Instructors’ lack of efficiency in web 2.0 technology, privacy issues, and
data overload were the major concerns noted.
As these result are based on areas of investigatory interest of young researchers, the
current findings provides a barometer of emerging trends regarding critical issues in social
media education research. Subramani, R. (2015) examined the academic use of social media
applications by university students and to study the wage of various academic application of
social media by the university students. The population of the study consisted of thirteen major
disciplines of students in doctoral, M. Phil and master branches. The sample size of the study
comprise of 452 students selected through convenient sampling technique. The structure
questionnaire was used for data collection.
Nee, Chee Ke (2014) attempted obtain students perception on how their use of social
networking into a classroom setting on the academic achievement of biology student base on
three types of conceptual level comprises o direct, simple and complex concept. The result
indicated that students that were instructed by the instruction with intervention performed a
larger on the gain scores of all the three cognitive levels than those instructed by the
conventional approaches. This educational network will permeate all facets of the curriculum as
a new paradigm of teaching tools.
Alhazmi, Abdulsolam K. (2013) conducted study to understand the social aspects of
Facebook use among students’ perception of using Facebook for academic purposes is not
significantly related to study level and students’ experience. Moreover, based on the overall
18
results of the survey and literature reviews, the paper presents recommendations and
suggestion for further research of social networking a higher education context.
Conclude, according to Boyd and Ellison, social network site is a web based service
which allows people to sign up in a bounded system, articulating group of people within the
same system so as to share personal or academic related information. This indicates that SNS
entails a place where people connect with each other and common issues relating to
relationship, sports, politics or academics. However, Boyd and Ellison argue that participants
from certain social media sites are not primarily there to connect with people they are not
familiar with, rather they sign up to connect and catch up with ones. Social network sites have
attracted considerable attention among scholars and educators due to growing popularity
among students and the potential effect on academic performance. However, the studies
appear from two opposing views on the impacts of SNS on users. While proponents argue that
it allows users in connecting people of common interest ad value, opponents claim the
excessive use of these sites affects the social, mental and physical health of the users.
The Effects of Social Media on Student Performance
This research effort is targeted at finding the effects of social media on students’
performance. Therefore, the literature review discusses the relevant research that is useful to
the objectives of this research project. Several research studies investigating the topic under
review are found to be very recent. Since most of the innovative features offered by social
media platforms like Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn and many others are not that old and the
phenomenon of the use of these media has boosted recently with the introduction of
revolutionary features and platforms, a volume of recent research on its effect on students’
academic performance is available. Most of the studies chosen have been published in the past
four to five years.
19
Tess (2013) presents a very comprehensive literature review paper regarding the role of
social media in higher education virtual and real classes. The review has consulted almost
every popular research database around the world to make this review rich in terms of covering
almost every aspect of explaining the role of different social media in higher education classes.
This research finds Facebook to be the most popular social networking site among
students as reported by some researchers and it has reached a one billion user base on
October 2012. Myspace is another SNS which started in 2003 and got popular among people
around 2009. However, it is not that popular among educational setups. LinkedIn with more than
35,000,000 users has been reported as the third most popular SNS but mostly used for
professional networking. In addition, this research found Blogs, Social Impact and Twitter
among the other popular social networking sites.
The review found a mix of opinion regarding whether social networking platforms and
technology should be integrated into learning processes or not. Tess (2013) literature survey
finds many reasons for this mix of opinion. Although most of the educational institutions have
established infrastructure for the support of social media integration methodology is still a
question mark for the researchers to answer. Some practitioners are not willing to adapt this
technology due to lack of proper training in this area.
Positive and Negative Use of Social Media by Students
Social media is already a trend nowadays. It is an online technology platform that helps
to connect people together whether they are far or near. The use of social media by students is
to help them have access to basic information as quick as possible. It has been observed that
social media has a wider and faster means of circulating information’s not only to the students
but also to the public.
20
However, what are the positive and negative effects of social media to the students?
Some positive effects are: (1) it facilitates online learning - students learn through different
learning platforms available. For example, the use of YouTube to watch educational videos; (2)
Access to information - there are lots of groups wherein students can join through online
platforms related to their course or topic; (3) It helps gain wider knowledge - students can go
and search to different online platforms to gather information’s and data's to increase their
knowledge; and (4) It helps build relationship - through social media, students may seek help
from other people who may provide solution for the problem.
On the other hand, the negative effects are; (1) It wastes time- instead of reading and
practicing what they have learned in school, students tend to waste their time chatting and
scrolling on their social media accounts; (2) It causes distraction - students usual’s stick to their
gadgets without concentrating on their studies that may affect their academic performance; (3) It
causes social problems - rather than having a real time or face to face conversation, students
choses to use social media to have an online communication which leads them to become an
introvert; and (4) It causes health problem - the use of computers and gadgets for long hours
frequently may cause harm to the user. Like for example, they may be exposed to bad posture,
eye strain, physical and mental stress.
Therefore, social media has it's pros but too much use of social media may be harmful
for us and might affect our social academic performances. So students must use social media
effectively and must be conscious of its pros and cons. They should try as much as possible to
balance their time to not carry away while learning.
Impact of Social Media on Students’ Academic Performance
21
Though social media can increase student learning through students’ interactions,
challenges arise when social media are incorporated into an academic course. The assumption
that students are familiar with and agreeable to using certain types of social media can cause
educators to inadvertently fail to provide the resources of encouragement necessary to support
student usage and learning (Cole, 2009; Valjataga and Fiedler, 2009). Arnold and Paulus (2010)
found that even when social media is used for an educational purpose, students incorporate the
technology into their lives in a way that may differ from the intentions of the course instructor.
For example, off-topic or non-academic discussions occur on social media because of its
primary design as a social networking tool (Lin et al, 2013). Further, as a student’s age
increases, the frequency of off-topic discussions also increases (Lin et al, 2013). This indicates
that while social media may encourage broader discussions of course content, older students
may spend more time than younger students engaging in unrelated discussions. Social media
can also negatively affect student GPA as well as the amount of time students spend preparing
for class (Annetta et al, 2009; Junco, 2012b). One explanation for this impact is that social
media provides too much stimulation and therefore can distract students from completing their
coursework (Hurt et al, 2012; Patera et al, 2008). Another reason for this may be that students
who spend more time on social media may have difficulty balancing their online activities and
their academic preparation.
Social media can also be a challenging instructional strategy to incorporate because it
attempts to balance the authority of the education with the active participation of the students.
Collaboration through social media supports more a constructivist approach to learning, where
students and educators can work together to co-create understanding of a particular topic,
rather than an approach that emphasizes individual contributions (Stevens, 2009).
The Effects of Videogames on Student Achievement
22
Today's world is one that is largely composed of technology. In a relatively short span of
time we have been immersed in a world of a high definition television Facebook, YouTube,
Internet radio, "green" cars, outrageous thrill rides, 3-D technology, etc. But no area of
technology has become as prominent as that of video gaming. As with any other innovation in
society, the introduction of video games brought the question "What are the negative effects of
consequences?" Smyth (2007) notes that there seems to be an increased in research in the
area of video games to answer this question. Skoric, Teo and Neo (2009) went one step farther
and studied addiction to video gaming. They found that those addicted to gaming consistently
performed negatively in the academic setting, while there was no negative correlation between
time spent playing or engagement and academic performance. Shao- I, Sie-zhi and Der Hsiang
(2004) also studied addiction and noted a decrease in school performance when the student
was addicted to gaming. They found that gaming violence. Finally, they noted that playing video
games took time away from school activities, homework, social interaction, etc. Smuth (2007)
studied the difference between playing massively multiplayer online role playing games
(MMORPG) and playing other types of video games and found that even though the MMORPG
group reported greater inferences in academic work as opposed to the other groups, overall at
the groups did not differ in academic performances.
Video games can certainly lead to positive and negative effects like on the present
study. Social media and video games are connected to technology where these are two are
very helpful in the learning process of students. But too much usage can result to poor
academic performance. If in video games, violence gaming can affects ones behavior social
media can also affects ones behavior using not useful and bad influential posts, videos, or
images. There are video games that need socializing to other people to achieve a certain task in
the game. With that players are dedicated to play the game as a team as a result to addiction
homework and school activities are less prior. The same with social media, if someone is busy
23
chatting, texting or calling there will be less attention in studying. Video games and social
Medias make students busy but they should take responsibilities to their homework, school
activities and studying.
Social Media and Higher Education: A Literature Review
This paper presents a literature review of empirical research related to the use and
effects of social media in higher education settings. The adoption of social media has been
steadily increasing. Social networking sites like Facebook, twitter, oskut, etc. diverting students
from their studies. Students spend more time on social media than they do using personal
email. Even though, there is a loss of privacy and safety, social media provides opportunities for
connecting with friends, classmates ad people with shared interest. Today, the main aim of the
student should be education and their future career. Research finds Facebook to be the most
popular social networking site among students as reported by some researches and it has
reached a one billion user base in October 2012.
A person gets lazy of works due to over usage of social networking sites and online. In
their opinion, transparency, gear collaboration, audience participation and globalization are
changing markets an companies and social networks like YouTube or Myspace are crucial.
Facebook is one of the most visited social network website. Although most of the educational
institutions have established infrastructure for the support of social media integration into
classroom learning. However, the effective integration methodology is still a question mark for
the researchers to answer.

Research Design and Methodology
This chapter presents the method and procedure that was applying in this study. It was
organize under the follow sub headings: Research Design, Locate and Population, Data
gathering tool, and data gathering procedure.
Research Design
The research design adopted for the study was a descriptive case study that answers
who, what, when and how questions related to a particular research problem. This design
enables the researcher to generate data about the present situation to gain und understanding
of a certain phenomenon. Thus, descriptive case study was applied in this study for it aims to
describe the effects of social media of the grade 11 learners with the influence of social media
of Baguio Central University.
Locale and Population of the Study
The respondents of the study were the grade 11 learners of Baguio Central University
Senior High School Department. Purposeful random sampling was used where there are 11
sections namely: ABM-A, ABM-B, ABM-C, HUMMS-A, HUMMS-B, HUMMS-C, HUMMS-D,
25
STEM-A, STEM-B, STEM-C, and TVL. The researchers randomly select students in each
section.

In addition, the researchers added 1 person in each section to be interviewed. There will
be a total of 11 people to be interviewed and a total of 53 respondents.
Data Gathering Tool
In gathering the data needed in the study, a questionnaire and in-depth interview was
the main tools used. A questionnaire is a form of prepared and distributed to secure responses
to a certain topic.
Data Gathering Procedure
26
The researcher collected the needed data through the use of questionnaire and its
administration in the selected faculty members. The administration of the questionnaire was
carried out by the researcher. There will be two stages of data gathering: (1) making the
questions to collect the needed information for the research; and (2) floating and interviewing
the selected respondents.

twitter, Instagram, messenger, and skype. The other students specified other social media
platforms namely: wattpad, YouTube, and google.
Among the students, Facebook has the highest usage where 43% of our respondents
are using it. Also, 35% of the students use messenger. Instagram is the third that has the
highest usage where 11% of the respondents also prefer to use it. Some students use the first
three social media platforms. YouTube is also preferred by 5% of the respondents and 3% of
the respondents chose Twitter. Some also specified google, wattpad and skype as their social
media platform.
We therefore conclude that Facebook is the most used social media platform by the
students.

In table 2, the different social media providers are: mobile data, Wi-Fi, home internet and
computer shop. These providers are being used by the students to open their accounts.
Among the social media providers, 40% of the students use mobile data because it is
more accessible and directly connected on the sim card if they have load. The second is Wi-Fi,
33% of the respondents prefer Wi-Fi because it is one of the strongest and fastest connection
on the internet. Wi-Fi is also being used in BCU library so most students can access on social
media even if they are in school. And 16% of the students have their home internet. At home,
there is a big possibility that the students will open their social media account. And 11% of the
students open their social media accounts in computer shops.

and encourage them to rather substitute those time/hours to focus on their studies.
3. Students should let them limit the time they spend on social media sites each day and
encourage them to instead change the time they focus on their studies.
4. Use Facebook in a good way as you finish assignments with fellow students.
