Neitana talks about his experiences from kōhanga to secondary school. What were some of the most memorable things for him at school?

If you wore your uniform incorrectly you would get told off by the teachers. If you did it a lot, you were asked to go to another school.

There were 1700 kids at school.The students started with an assembely every day. He liked that, because everyone was clear about the start of the day. I tīmata te rā mai i ngā huihuinga ā-kura, ia rā.

At the school hui they would sit in their classes, the bell would ring. It wasn’t an electric bell it was an old style bell. The head boy would go up on to the stage and tell the school to stand. The boys would stand and the principal would enter the hall. No one would move. Everyone stood up quickly. If you stood up too slow you would have to return at lunchtime to practise.

They had all sorts of sports there. Rugby was the main one. You were held in high regard if you were good at rugby.

He was in the 1st XV in his last year. They practiced four times a week. Two mornings and two afternoons. They would travel to play rugby a lot. They’d go to places like Rotorua, Tauranga, Hamilton, Auckland, Hawke’s Bay. Sometimes they’d miss a whole week of school because of travel. He enjoyed that but sometimes he fell behind in his school work.

What do you think Neitana’s upbringing was like? Give evidence for your answers.

He was the eldest so he had a lot of responsibilities. He reckons that if you asked his younger siblings that they would say he was the bossy one.

They had to contribute to the housework and make sure they cleaned up their own mess. He mentions that there wasn’t going to be anyone running around cleaning up after them.

They had quite common practices in the home such as removing your shoes and hosting your visitors appropriately.

What were Neitana’s experiences of being on the marae when he was growing up?

Him and his mates would go to the marae and help to set things up before a tangihanga would commence. As they were young and fit they would often move the heavy stuff around.

Neitana talked about his leisure time as he was growing up. What does his response tell you about what sort of a teenager he was?

He was involved in kapa haka and sports which indicates that he was a social person and enjoyed physical activity. He did play PlayStation a bit but he was not allowed to spend a lot of time on it.

What strategy did Neitana’s kaiako use to moderate his students behaviour during noho marae?

He would not repremand them imdeiately for talking after night out. Instead if the students talked they were made to get up and go for a run at 4am.
