CONSEQUENCES & DISCIPLINEThe Sierra Verde PBIS Discipline Program, outlined in the student handbook,

governs specific disciplinary procedures for most classroom behaviors. If at any time he feels that a behavior is disruptive or detractive from a healthy

learning environment or represents a danger to the well-being of students or school property, Mr. Fike reserves the right to intervene in that behavior, regardless of whether or not a specific rule exists to govern it.

Steps of Discipline:STEP 1: A verbal warning, consisting of a reminder of the rules, a restatement of the

expectations, a reminder of consequences, and a polite request to stop the undesired behavior. One daily point will be deducted from the grade.

STEP 2: Student is re-notified of the rule being broken. Another 2 daily points will be deducted from the grade. Additional Consequences may be introduced:

Repetition of procedures (student gets a chance to redo their actions in the correct way) Loss of privileges, including using school instruments After-class teacher/student conference Call home to ParentSTEP 3: All Participation points are lost for the day. Lunch Detention is issued. Parents are

notified.STEP 4: Office Referral

Behavioral Expectations1. Come prepared for class.2. No food, drink, or gum besides water.3. Leave things in better condition than you found them.4. If it doesn’t belong to you and you don’t have permission, don’t

touch it.5. Do the right thing because it is the right thing to do.6. If you can’t get out of it, get into it!7. Leave drama at the door.8. Create a Sanctuary.

Practicing Expectations1. Students are expected to take instruments home on a daily basis.2. Students should be prepared for class and playing assessments.3. If a student is unprepared for a performance due to lack of practice

or poor attendance, they may be moved down in part and/or pulled from the performance at the director’s discretion.

4. Students must practice their age in minutes only on the days that they eat.

Success is only achieved through diligent practice. If you wish to be personally successful on your instrument, and you want the band to be successful, then you MUST put in the time to practice.

It is crucial that you practice every single day, and not just cram all your practice time into one day. Learning to play an instrument requires slow and steady development of muscle memory. Muscle memory cannot be crammed like other information—so make sure you’re practicing a little bit every day!

If taking your instrument home is impossible (in the most literal sense of the word), you can still practice. Name the notes in your music, make fingering flashcards, clap the rhythm to your music, or sing it in your head while you finger along. You do not need an instrument in your hands to get better at the music.

CHAIR PLACEMENT AND CHALLENGE GUIDELINES

Within the first few weeks of each semester, band students will play a playing test that will determine their chair placement for the semester. This is standard practice in any musical ensemble and is what students can expect from their musical career. This is intended to appropriately place musicians within the sections so that they are playing parts that are most accessible to them as well as challenging. This is also to give musicians with more experience an opportunity for leadership. The first chair (highest placed) student will be designated section leader and will fulfill the responsibilities expected of someone in that position.

***The director reserves the right to consider any playing test as a placement audition and therefore grounds for section reassignment.

If a student wishes to challenge someone within their section, some guidelines apply: Students may challenge each other for chair placement or for playing part.

Page 9:   · Web viewSierra Verde STEAM Academy. Instrumental Arts. Handbook. Mr. Bryan Fike. 2018-2019. Table of Contents:

9

o Chair placement: students will perform scales, rudiments, and other fundamental exercises. The winner will gain the higher chair.

o Playing Part: students may challenge each other in order to play solos or selected passages in music. Percussionists may challenge each other for the right to perform parts in concert and assessment performances- this may include entire parts, solos and instances where there are more percussionists than parts that need to be played. Example: in a piece where all parts are covered and there are multiple percussionists playing snare drum, students may challenge each other to determine who will play that part on that piece in the actual performance.

Students may only challenge the person whose chair placement is above theirs (ie: third chair may only challenge second chair, they cannot skip over and challenge the first chair player).

The challenger must give the director and the student they wish to challenge two full school days’ notice before participating in the challenge.

Students involved in a challenge who wish a re-challenge must give appropriate notice and wait one full week (7 days) before they can play another challenge.

The director will set deadlines for challenges leading up to performances, and students may not begin challenges again until after the performance.

The director reserves the right to make modifications and changes at his or her discretion and as needed in the best interest of individuals and the ensemble as a whole.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURE EXAMPLEA typical rehearsal for a band class (5th-8th Grade) looks as follows:

Timeframe* Description0:00-5:00 Check the board for any special instructions or assignments, like bell work.

Place your backpack in the designated area for your section. Retrieve your instrument, pencil, a piece of paper if there is bell work, and any supplies you need (extra reeds, valve oil, etc.) from your case/backpack. Quietly go to your seat and listen to announcements (NO TALKING DURING ANNONCEMENTS). Do not begin playing yet. After Announcements: If there is bell work on the board, complete it. Note the rehearsal plan on the board and ready what music you need.At 3 minutes after the class begins, Mr. Fike will step on the podium to lead you through warm ups and rehearsal for the day.

5:00-10:00 The teacher will lead you through warmup activities, including tone exercises, articulation studies, chorales, and other excerpts he has designed to help you learn musical fundamentals. At this time, students will have already warmed up individually and are prepared with everything that they need to play.

Page 10:   · Web viewSierra Verde STEAM Academy. Instrumental Arts. Handbook. Mr. Bryan Fike. 2018-2019. Table of Contents:

10

10:00-15:00 The teacher will do daily assessment of individual performance skills and knowledge as necessary.

15:00-25:00 Students will sight read and practice music fundamentals in isolated, unified contexts.

25:00-40:00 Repertoire Rehearsal. Full band will practice applying the fundamental skills learned in live musical context.

40:00-45:00 Students will strike their setup by putting their instruments away and picking up any trash they may have left behind. They will set up chairs and stands for the next class that enters class. They will line up at the door and wait quietly and politely to be dismissed before leaving.

*Note that times are flexible and may be extended or reduced to accommodate different learning

objectives.

BATHROOM USEStudents will not be permitted to use the restroom during the first and last periods of

school, or the period immediately following lunch. Students are expected to use the restroom during passing periods, before and after class. Students should only request to use the bathroom during class if it is a severe need. They can request excusal by raising their hand with their fingers crossed. The teacher will respond one of two ways:

A thumbs-up means the student is excused to use the restroom. An open hand means “please wait.”

Once a student has been excused by Mr. Fike, they can take the appropriate bathroom pass available next to the door (male or female).

ILLNESS OR INJURYThere are many circumstances that make it difficult to play an instrument, from strep

throat and sinus infections to braces and broken bones. The student’s health and welfare is always the director’s first priority. However, relatively few illnesses or injuries prevent students from playing their instrument entirely, so long as they are using correct posture/embouchure and breathing techniques. Be advised that because Band is an academic class, you must produce a doctor’s note forbidding the playing of instruments in order to be excused from playing your instrument in class, unless the injury is obvious (new braces/bronchitis, etc.)

GRADING

1. Grades will be comprised of the following categories: a. Performance Assessment –50%

i. Testing will be submitted either via Canvas or in class, at the director’s discretion.

ii. Students must have a minimum of 70% on all performance tests to perform at events/concerts (students will still be required to attend events)

iii. Students are allowed to make up any performance test up to 3 weeks before any concert or festival. At that time, if the student does not meet performance requirements, an email is sent home to notify the parent/guardian. The student will then have up until 1 week prior to the performance to make up their tests.

iv. LATE WORK POLICY: Students who turn in assignments late will lose 1 point off their assignment grade for each day it was late. In a 20 point assignment, this means that for every day it is late, you lose 5%.

1. For every day an assignment is late, the maximum grade achievable in a resubmission is also lowered by 5%.

a. If you submit something 2 days late and score a 75%, you may resubmit, but even if you play it perfectly, the highest grade you can get is a 90% (100-5(number of days late)=Maximum grade)

v. RESUBMISSION POLICY: Students who are unhappy with the grade on their initial assignment may resubmit the assignment as many times as they wish for a better grade, up until the week prior to grading period ending. The highest grade out of all submissions will be represented in the gradebook.

b. Participation – 30%i. Daily Participation – 3 points per day

1. Missing pencil - loss of 1 point 2. Missing music - loss of 1 point 3. Missing instrument - loss of 3 points 4. Misbehavior or disruption of class - loss of points 5. Not in assigned seat and READY 3 minutes after bell - loss of 1 point

ii. Bi-Quarterly Notebook Checks – 40 points per quarter1. Students can find a “Model Notebook” in the band room. For full points,

their notebook should look exactly like the model notebook in content, order, and cleanliness.

2. Students who forget their binder on the floor in class or otherwise don’t store it properly on the designated shelf will forfeit 5 points for each instance.

c. Performances 20%

Page 12:   · Web viewSierra Verde STEAM Academy. Instrumental Arts. Handbook. Mr. Bryan Fike. 2018-2019. Table of Contents:

12

i. Concerts, Festivals, Assessments ii. There are no make-up assignments for missed performances.iii. After an event, the students will provide a self-assessed grade in the following categories

1. Audience Etiquette - Behavior as an audience member 2. Stage Etiquette - Behavior as a performer 3. Timeliness - At venue at the designated call time 4. Dress Code - In proper dress code (see “Uniforms”)

Concert attendance and appropriate attire: See “Concert Procedure” and “Uniform” above.Formative playing assessments: Over the course of the semester, you complete a variety of playing assessments in class or via SmartMusic/Sight Reading Factory. The majority of these assessments are scale tests, but also include part checks and sight reading tests. These count as quizzes, are worth 15 points, and are weighted at 40% of your grade.Daily Preparedness/Bellwork/Listening Journals: Preparedness is important every single day. Points are deducted for coming to class without any of the required materials (see above).

In keeping with Arizona State Law, your grades will remain private and not will be shared with anyone who is not you, your guardian, or professionals with clearance to view grade information.

COSTS, INSTRUMENTS, FUNDRAISINGFundraising

Occasionally, the Bands program decides to undertake an initiative that requires significant monetary support. This could include everything from traveling, to new instruments or music. During these initiatives, Mr. Fike may ask students to do fundraising for the group. Fundraising allows us to purchase new materials (including songs, songbooks, CDs, and electronics like tablets) for use in teaching, and may allow us to go on tour as a group. Check in with us as the year progresses to see what you can do to help support the music program at this school. At the time of writing, there are no current plans for group fundraisers. This document will be updated at the end of each semester if there are significant changes or plans.

There will be fundraising efforts this year to help pay for the Disneyland trip and offset music costs. Please look out for emails coming for more information.

Disneyland Trip

The Disneyland Soundtrack Sessions is a one-of-a-kind opportunity. The Instrumental Band program takes a trip to Anaheim every other year to experience this event. The next trip will be in Spring of 2020.

Instrument Rental

1. It is expected that all students provide their own instrument, accessories, and materials for participation in ensembles at Sierra Verde.

2. If a family has issue renting an instrument, it is recommended you contact the director for a private conference regarding the matter.

3. Limited bigger and more expensive instruments (Tuba, Baritone, Baritone Sax, etc.) for ensembles may be rented from the director for a one-time $30 donation to cover repairs and maintenance (see the director for more information)

a. Rentals are subject to the completion of a rental contract.b. Instruments must be returned at the end of the school year cleaned and in

working condition.c. Rental contracts are given/revoked at the discretion of the band director based

on treatment of the instrument, its case, and/or other band property.4. There are several establishments within a few miles of Sierra Verde where you can rent instruments. Personally, Mr. Fike prefers Milano Music for the low prices and amazing service. Their contact information is as follows:

Milano MusicMilanomusic.com

“Mail & More”, 8194 W Deer Valley Rd(623) 561-6904

Buying a New InstrumentIf a student is looking into buying a new instrument, it is highly recommended that

parents talk with Mr. Fike or private instructor before making the purchase. There are more “knock-off” brands on the market than good quality brands. Avoid Ebay and Craigslist unless you know exactly what you are looking for. A good place to check first is your local instrument repair shop; they will be truthful with you and may have instruments for sale. A good motto to abide by is: “If a deal is ‘too good to be true,’ then it probably is.”

Please stick to traditional colors: black clarinets, brass saxophones, silver flutes, silver/brass trumpets, etc. Make sure that the instrument you are buying is music educator approved!

Private LessonsPrivate instrumental lessons are an amazing opportunity for growth for you or your child.

They are highly encouraged at the elementary and middle school levels to help propel students into a very successful playing career through high school. It is never too early or too late to start taking lessons! There is a large network of very knowledgeable teachers in this state taking on private students at this time. Please contact the director for specific recommendations on private instructors, or consult the list on the following page:
