40 HOUR FAMINE - 19 AUGUST+

Brett Stevens’ youngest daughter, Chayani (16) will be abstaining from food for 40hours from 19th to 21st August to raise money for humanitarian projects. As mostparents know, our teenagers tend to eat every few hours, we call it grazing, so noteating for 40 hours is a major commitment. The 40 Hour Famine raises money forWorld Vision, and the money will be used for projects around the world, including inEast Timor, where funds will help create a seed bank and other initiatives to sustainfamilies and children through the "hungry months". Any donation, large or small, isappreciated. Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.

CLUB MEETING 10 AUG 2011Aug 11, 2011

Attendance: 64%; 24 Members; 1 Guests; 1 Makeup Meeting Chair’s Report – Barry Minster

Unfortunately not received at the time of issue and a gentle reminder that theresponsibilities for this key weekly role are shown in the Club Handbook.

.….. but we know that Barry Minster gave an interesting insight into the behind thescenes work that goes into broadcasting sporting events. He also gave the term "welltravelled" new meaning! It was a terrific trip down memory lane and we wish Barrywell as he prepares for the 2012 London Olympics.

As August is MEMBERSHIP month and our Membership evening is only twoweeks away, here are some thoughts on the five golden rules of “speed”networking:

1. Bring business cards [we have some blank Rotary cards; see Marjory]2. Set objectives for the discussion– you only have a short time with each

person so it’s important to know what you want to achieve.3. Listen as much as you talk – if not more. Networking isn’t all about sell,

sell, sell and incessant babble could alienate possible future members.4. Practice your ‘elevator pitch’– you’ll only have one minute to wow your

audience so practicing a punchy and precise overview of you and Rotarywill create a great first impression.

The latest Rotary “elevator pitch” was presented at a recent Clubforum:

“Rotary is a network of inspired individuals who translate their passionsinto relevant social causes to change lives in communities.”

This of course is underpinned by our five core values.

Click the numbers for some membership resources as recentlysent to a potential member …… 1 2 3

Remember to refer them to our web site - it is a great resource.

5. Follow up – it sounds obvious but make sure the business cards you

ROTARY CLUBS MAKE CHANGES TO ATTRACTYOUNGER MEMBERSAug 11, 2011

When Rotarians in Walnut Creek, California, USA, found it difficultto attract young professionals to the area's morning and afternoonclubs, they set out to establish a new club that wouldaccommodate busy, on-the-go schedules.

The Rotary Club of Diablo View (Walnut Creek), chartered in 2009, meets in a localbrewery at 5:30 p.m. every Thursday. Club president Jennifer Beeman says the clubsets aside time each week for socializing before turning to club business, and that therelaxed atmosphere appeals to younger members. Beeman was only 24 years old when she became a charter member of the club, andshe's now one of the youngest female club presidents in Rotary. The club has 26members, 90 percent of them between the ages of 25 and 40. "Because we have younger members, our attitude is different. People have told ushow refreshing it is to have young faces behind Rotary," Beeman says. She says the club carries out many projects in the community so that members have anopportunity to do hands-on service. Every month, for instance, it plans an outdoorproject, such as cleaning up nature trails. Younger Rotarians usually have more timethan cash at their disposal, she says, so they tend to contribute by volunteering. The club recruits new members through social media like Twitter and Facebook, and ithas a mentoring program to help with retention. All new members are assigned amentor, who spends extra time with them outside regular meetings. "The modifications we've made have helped our club appeal to younger professionalsand retain them," Beeman says. "They’ve created a high-energy club." Beeman says clubs must be willing to make a few changes to attract youngermembers. Here are some examples of what other clubs are doing:

· Through a student membership initiative, the Rotary Club of Hope Island,Queensland, Australia, invites college-age students to meetings and subsidizesthe cost to bring a youthful perspective to the club.

· The Rotary Club of Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, has created the 25 Club, a club-within-a-club. The members hold additional meetings, sponsor regular socialgatherings, and carry out a number of service projects. The inductees aregenerally younger, and after a year, they transition into the parent Rotaryclub.

· The Rotary Club of Crawley, Western Australia, Australia, started a mentoringprogram that helps new members transition into the club. The club’s averageage is now in the 30s.

· The Rotary Club of Bricktown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA, meets in atavern. First-time guests are treated to two free beverages, compliments ofthe club. Read more.

· The Rotary Club of South Metro Minneapolis Evenings, Minnesota, USA, meetsin the evenings and lowers costs by not having meals. The third meeting ofthe month is a happy hour/networking event at different locations in the city. The fourth meeting is a volunteering opportunity.

PP Graham Richardson PHF

Born in Mosman, Sydney, Graham matriculated from North Sydney Boys' High School, and then graduated with honours in Electrical Engineering (Communications &Electronics) from Uni of NSW 4 years later under the PMG's Department cadetengineer program. His final thesis in 1961, involved getting a transistor based computerto work at a speed of 10 MHz - today's run at up to 30,000 times faster!. Although thiswasn't achieved, it precipitated a lifelong career with computers.

After graduating, he left the PMG and joined NCR, then known as National CashRegister Company, which had just entered the IT era. At NCR, he met his wife, Pam,and they married in 1966.

Initially a programmer, NCR appointed Graham to a 2-year consultancy with Ampolwhen it purchased its first computer, following which they were transferred toMelbourne to set up the support operations for customers that purchased NCR'scomputers. Later, he moved to marketing, consulting and management roles until, in1980, he was persuaded to join the McEwans hardware chain as a director of thetrading company, in charge of IT and business systems.

When McEwans was taken over by Repco, Graham joined Costain Australia, a mining, building construction, civil engineering and property development organisation. However by 1992, the English parent company had closed down all the operationsexcept its coal and gold mines, and after 21 months of weekly commuting to theSydney mining offices, the mines were sold to Peabody, upon which Graham thenjoined Finemore's Transport.

As IT Manager, he managed the introduction of GPS tracking and data communicationsto trucks in several of Finemore's operations. But in 2001, after a lengthy fight, TollHoldings took Finemores over. Graham oversaw much of the transition andintegration of the IT systems, then focused on GPS tracking and data communicationsfor Toll's fleet, and finally as Communications Manager, he was responsible for thecontract with Optus to provide all the company's data and voice communications, aposition from which he retired in 2006.
