THE HOLY CHRISM OF THE ARMENIAN CHURCH
THE SERVICE (Continued from previous issue)
The ceremony carries with it long historical memories and traditions, which
have a strong impact on the life of the Church.
Forty days before the blessing, the cauldron, in which the Holy Muron is to
be prepared and blessed, is placed on the altar of the Cathedral. After being
filled with laurel and olive oil, the cauldron is covered with seven long cloths
joined to each other at the top. On the fortieth day, the cauldron is taken to the
altar, which has been constructed in the courtyard. The Catholicos,
accompaied by the 12 bishops and the priests, walks from his residence to the
altar, under a parasol, to celebrate the Holy liturgy.
5
The 12 bishops carry the holy relics, the old Muron, rose water and the
essence of balsam. During the Liturgy, a bishop reads the Gospel and a
second bishop recites the Creed of the Faith. Three bishops bring the Holy
Chalice from the Holy Trinity Altar.
The rite of the sacrament of the Holy Muron is performed according to
the Holy Mashdots, the centuries-old book brought from Sis. The ritual
begins after the Great Entrance (Veraperoum) and continues until the
exchange of the Kiss of Peace “Voghtchouyn”. The bishops read from the
Bible while the Catholicos recites the prayers of blessing ascribed to him.
In his prayers, the Catholicos asks the Holy Spirit to sanctify the oil, so that
those who are anointed by it may receive grace and heavenly gifts. The
Catholicos also reads the prayer, “Holy God and Awsome Name”, “Sourp
yev ahavor anoun”. “Let our prayers become true and become reasons for
glorifying you. And let this enlightened oil become an opportunity for us,
the sinful, for the purification of our sins.”
After this prayer, the lid of the bowl is opened while the hymn “Patser
Der” is sung. The bowl is handed over to the godfather, usually a member
of the community chosen by the Pontiff. The Catholicos then fills the bowl
with the essence of the flowers, scented roots and the balsam, and adds to
them the old Muron while singing “Arakelo Aghavno” (The Dove of Peace
Sent from Heaven”).
This is the climax of the ceremony. The bells of the Cathedral toll while
the Pontiff stirs new Muron, first with the relic of the “Wood of Life” (The
Holy Cross of our Lord) and then with the Right hand of the Father of our
faith, Saint Gregory the Illuminator.
The Catholicos then covers the bowl. After the bishops read prayers in
turn, the Catholicos reads the final prayer. With the joyful words of the
“Ourakh Ler” hymn and the Pontiff’s blessing, the ritual ends, the Holy
Liturgy continues and the members of the congregation exchange the kiss
of peace.
After the Holy Liturgy, the believers kiss and revere the bowl.

Congratulations to Hasmig Aaronian
for being selected the 2015 Mother of the Year
Father Vahan Gosdanian, Jason Davis, Hasmig Aaronian,
& Sevag Sanikian
As a child Hasmig Kavoukjian Aaronian aspired to be an opera singer. She
began singing in the church choir at the age of ten under the direction of
Prof. Kalfayan. Hasmig eventually became a soloist under the
encouragement of Hratch Tcherkoyan. She continues to devote her Sunday
mornings to singing homages to the Lord.
Hasmig regularly attended Sunday school and was a member of the Young
Legion Youth Group. In 1948 Hasmig married Aaron Aaronian, they were
blessed with three children, Karen, Rick, and Randy.
Her children attended Sunday school and Karen sang in the church choir,
while Rick and Randy served as Altar boys. As you can see church, singing,
and family was at the center of Hasmig’s life.
Hasmig made a career working for the FUSD in the transportation
department. She continued to pursue her singing dreams when she became a
member of the Hamazkayin Choir, Melodeers, and the Fresno Community
Chorus, eventually singing on stage with her daughter in two opera
productions, “La Boheme” and “La Travita”. She also became a member of
Fresno’s Master Chorale and performed in the concert commemorating the
Centennial of the Armenian Genocide.
Her devotion to church and God is evident every week, as she attends Bible
study classes and continues to sing in the choir. Thank you Hasmig for your
service to our church. God Bless You!

Spotlight on Sunday school By: Barbara Mortanian
Linda Tayian Hurst has been part of
our dedicated volunteer Sunday
school staff for 15 years. She began
sharing her kind, calm and gentle
teaching style in 2000 along side
Anne Kevorkian in grade 4 and
currently Linda and Anne’s
daughter, Kathy, team teach the
same class. These two ladies have
an unspoken understanding and are
an excellent teaching duo.
Born in Los Angeles, Linda is the
daughter of the late Diran and Hazel
Tayian. She attended school in
southern California and graduated from Hollywood High School. She was baptized
in Gethsemane Armenian Church in LA and had her chrismation at Holy Trinity
Church with Paul Khasigian serving as her Godfather.
Linda attended California State University, Fresno earning a bachelor of science
degree in Animal Science followed by a Master of Science degree in Agriculture as
well. Following her years at CSUF she attended USC and earned a Doctor of
Pharmacy degree and is currently co-owner and working pharmacist of a Specialty
Pharmacy for Hemophilia patients. Linda is a member of the California
Pharmacist’s Association, Fresno Hemophilia Auxiliary.
Mark Hurst and Linda married in 1987 in Fowler. Celebrating 28 years of marriage
the couple is proud of their three sons; Luke age 26 is married to Andrea, manager
Fowler Ace Hardware, both are students and are expecting Linda and Mark’s
second grandchild. Jacob, the middle son, is 23 and is a graduate student at CSU
Fresno. Youngest son Jed, age 21 is a student, works at Ruth’s Chris Restaurant,
and is the father of the Hurst’s 5 year old granddaughter, Cambria. All three of her
sons are accomplished musicians.
When their three sons were young, Linda was a busy soccer and music mom and all
three boys were very active in Boy Scouting too. It’s not a surprise that the Hurst
family love raising animals, they have chickens, ducks, pigeons a goose and some
stray animals as well. Their home has served a refuge for their friend’s pets and
even strays that have needed a place to call home to self-restore and recuperate from
a variety of ills.
In addition to juggling her busy professional and very active home life, Linda
enjoys traveling, gardening and restoring the 100+ year old farmhouse where she
and her family live. Mrs. Hurst is a modest, highly educated and compassionate
woman of faith. Her favorite Bible Passage is the 23rd Psalm

PASS IT ON… Submitted by: Krista Parnagian
The Matchless Pearl
David Morse, American missionary to India, became great friends there with
the pearl-diver, Rambhau. Many an evening he spent in Rambhau's cabin reading
to him from the Bible, and explaining to him God's way of salvation. Rambhau
enjoyed listening to the word of God, but whenever the missionary tried to get
Rambhau to accept Christ as his Savior - he would shake his head and reply,
"Your Christian way to heaven is too easy for me! I cannot accept it. If ever I
should find admittance to heaven in that manner - I would feel like a pauper
there...like a beggar who has been let in out of pity. I may be proud - but I want to
deserve, I want to earn my place in heaven -- and so I am going to work for it."
Nothing the missionary could say seemed to have any effect on Rambhau's
decision, and so quite a few years slipped by. One evening, however, the
missionary heard a knock on his door, and on going to open it he found Rambhau
there. "Come in, dear friend," said Morse. "No," said the pearl-diver. "I want you
to come with me to my house, Sahib, for a short time -- I have something to show
you. Please do not say 'No'." "Of course I'll come," replied the missionary. As they
neared his house, Rambhau said: "In a week's time I start working for my place in
heaven; I am leaving for Delhi -- and I am going there on my knees." "Man, you
are crazy! It's nine hundred miles to Delhi, and the skin will break on your knees,
and you will have blood-poisoning or leprosy before you get to Bombay." "No, I
must get to Delhi," affirmed Rambhau, "and the immortals will reward me for it!
The suffering will be sweet - for it will purchase heaven for me!" "Rambhau, my
friend - you can't. How can I bear you to do it - when Jesus Christ has suffered and
died to purchase heaven for you!" But the old man could not be moved. "You are
my dearest friend on earth, Sahib Morse. Through all these years you have stood
by me in sickness, in want - you have been sometimes my only friend. But even
you cannot turn me from my desire to purchase eternal bliss...I must go to Delhi!"
Inside the hut Morse was seated in the very chair Rambhau had specially built for
him - where on so many occasions he had read to him the Bible.
Rambhau left the room to return soon with a small but heavy English
strongbox. "I have had this box for years," said he, "and I keep only one thing in
it. Now I will tell you about it, Sahib Morse. I once had a son..." "A son! Why,
Rambhau, you have never before said a word about him!" "No, Sahib, I couldn't."
Even as he spoke the diver's eyes were moistened. "Now I must tell you, for soon I
will leave, and who knows whether I shall ever return? My son was a diver too.
He was the best pearl diver on the coasts of India. He had the swiftest dive, the
keenest eye, the strongest arm, the longest breath of any man who ever sought for
pearls. What joy he brought to me! Most pearls, as you know, have some defect or
blemish only the expert can discern, but my boy always dreamed of finding the
'perfect' pearl - one beyond all that was ever found. One day he found it! But even
when he saw it - he had been under water too long... That pearl cost him his life,
for he died soon after."
The old pearl diver bowed his head. For a moment his whole body shook, but
there was no sound. "All these years," he continued, "I have kept this pearl - but
now I am going, not to return, and to you, my best friend - I am giving my pearl."
27
The old man worked the combination on the strongbox and drew from it a
carefully wrapped package. Gently opening the cotton, he picked up a mammoth
pearl and placed it in the hand of the missionary. It was one of the largest pearls ever
found off the coast of India, and glowed with a luster and brilliance never seen in
cultured pearls. It would have brought a fabulous sum in any market. For a moment
the missionary was speechless and gazed with awe. "Rambhau! What a pearl!" "That
pearl, Sahib, is perfect," replied the Indian quietly. The missionary looked up quickly
with a new thought: Was not this the very opportunity and occasion he had prayed
for - to make Rambhau understand the value of Christ's sacrifice? So he said,
designedly, "Rambhau, this is a wonderful pearl, an amazing pearl. Let me buy it. I
would give you ten thousand dollars for it." "Sahib! What do you mean?" "Well, I
will give you fifteen thousand dollars for it, or if it takes more - I will work for it."
"Sahib," said Rambhau, stiffening his whole body, "this pearl is beyond price. No
man in all the world has money enough to pay what this pearl is worth to me. On the
market a million dollars could not buy it. I will not sell it to you. You may only have
it as a gift." "No, Rambhau, I cannot accept that. As much as I want the pearl, I
cannot accept it that way. Perhaps I am proud, but that is too easy. I must pay for it,
or work for it..."
The old pearl-diver was stunned. "You don't understand at all, Sahib. Don't you
see. My only son gave his life to get this pearl, and I wouldn't sell it for any money.
Its worth is in the life-blood of my son. I cannot sell this - but I can give it to you.
Just accept it in token of the love I bear you." The missionary was choked, and for a
moment could not speak. Then he gripped the hand of the old man. "Rambhau," he
said in a low voice, "don't you see? My words are just what you have been saying to
God all the time." The diver looked long and searchingly at the missionary, and
slowly, slowly he began to understand. "God is offering you salvation as a free gift,"
said the missionary. "It is so great and priceless that no man on earth can buy it.
Millions of dollars are too little. No man on earth could earn it. His life would be
millions of years too short. No man is good enough to deserve it. It cost God the life-
blood of His only Son to make the entrance for you into heaven. In a million years, in
a hundred pilgrimages, you could not earn that entrance. All you can do is to accept
it as a token of God's love for you - a sinner.
"Rambhau, of course I will accept the pearl in deep humility, praying God that I
may be worthy of your love. Rambhau, won't you accept God's great gift of heaven,
too, in deep humility, knowing it cost Him the death of His Son to offer it to you?"
Great tears were now rolling down the cheeks of the old man. The veil was
beginning to lift. "Sahib, I see it now. I have believed in the doctrine of Jesus for the
last two years, but I could not believe that His salvation was free. Now I understand.
Some things are too priceless to be bought or earned. Sahib, I will accept His
salvation!" Author Unknown
Message: For God so loved the wor ld, that he gave his only begotten son,
that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."John
