Hua Hin is a weekend destination for a lot of wealthy Thai’s from Bangkok especially as it is located only 3 hours away. A lot own expensive condo’s overlooking the sea. Hua Hin also attracts a lot of Scandinavians and Germans for some reason, a lot on two week package holidays. As well as western couples and families there are a lot of single men on the hunt for pretty young Thai girls. It is an extremely common site to see older, overweight, unattractive western guys with petite beautiful Thai girls on their arm. I think a lot of the girls come to Hua Hin from north eastern Thailand looking for something better in life. Surely they could do a lot better than some of the men they end up with? Hua Hin is probably not the sort of place we would have thought of stopping in but there is a long beach clear of obstacles such as rocks, good wind and a kite school which amounts up to an excellent place to learn how to kite surf. It was also a good half way stop to Koh Phan Ghan where we were all planning to head to next. Our lessons with Kite Board Asia were great fun and we both conquered a lot of fears we had with controlling huge mother kites as well as starting to get good intense exercise. Hua Hin has a great night market with both wonderful delicious food stalls and clothes stalls. When it comes to buying clothes or getting tuk tuks the Thai’s are certainly not into haggling like the Indians are. It’s a shame really as I was quite getting into having a god haggle everyday. This is even more apparent in somewhere like Hua Hin as people have the money and don’t mind spending it. Not your average backpacker’s destination.

Bangkok City of AngelExotic Bangkok is a city that is really larger than life. The frenetic pace, heat, traffic and lack of personal space can be overpowering, but the sheer dynamism is intoxicating. An exotic blend of the traditional East with the modern West, Bangkok’s every street has a surprise in hold for everyone. Ramshackle buildings next to exotic temples surrounded by delightful gardens, which in turn are overlooked by modern hotels and offices. Bangkok has emerged as a major world city with the traffic to match, as well as the must needed mobile phones and designer clothes that are a prominent feature on the streets. The chaos on the streets is mirrored by the busy traffic on the Chao Phraya River, which dissects the city and is crisscrossed by long-tailed boats, river taxis and small rowing boats, all somehow missing each other. But the traditional Thai life is never far away. The saffron-robed monks can still be seen collecting their alms, while just moments from the city centre huge communities live in stilt houses by the river, eking out a living using skills that have not changed in centuries. In 1782, Bangkok became the capital of then Siam, following the destruction of the previous capital, Ayutthaya. Bangkok is not the name used by the Thais. It is Krung Thep, which is a very shortened version of its extremely long full title. The absolute rule of the monarchy ended in 1932 when it was replaced by a constitutional monarchy. To this day,

the monarchy is regarded with an almost religious reverence and it is an offence, punishable by imprisonment, to insult any member of the royal family. His Majesty King Bhumibol is the longest reigning monarch in the world, and has been in power in 1946. With the end of absolute monarchy, Thailand moved towards democracy but this has been interrupted by the military, which has often staged coups in protest at government policies. The role of the military in politics has now been curtailed but the 1990s saw governments come and go although there has been stability since the government took on the job of tackling the economic crisis in the late 1990s. Thailand is a tropical country so it is hot most the year, the best time to visit is between November and March, during the dry season. During the rainy season, humidity is extremely high and the downpours are short but violent and the streets of Bangkok often get flooded

"Chiengmai", is the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand, and is the capital of Chiang Mai Province. It is located some 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok, among some of the highest mountains in the country. The city stands on the Ping river, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya river.In recent years, Chiang Mai has become an increasingly modern city; and although it lacks the cosmopolitan nature of Bangkok, it has many attractions for the thousands of foreign visitors who come each year. Chiang Mai's historic importance is derived from its strategic location on an ancient trade route. Long before the modern influx of foreign visitors, the city served as a major centre for handcrafted goods, umbrellas, jewellery (particularly silver) and woodcarving.[citation needed]

While officially the city (thesaban nakhon) of Chiang Mai only covers most parts of the Mueang Chiang Mai district with a population of 150,000, the urban sprawl of the city now extends into several neighboring districts. This Chiang Mai Metropolitan Area has a population of nearly 1 million people, more than half the total of Chiang Mai Province.The city itself is subdivided into 4 wards (khwaeng): Nakhon Ping, Srivijaya, Mengrai, and Kavila. The first three are on the west bank while Kavila is located on the east bank of the Ping River. Nakhon Ping district covers the north side of the city. Srivijaya, Mengrai, and Kavila cover the west, south, and east side respectively. The central part (the old walled town) is covered mostly by Srivijaya and partly by Nakhon Ping and Mengrai wards.[1]
