Celebrating Inspired Teamwork

Benton Becomes Chamber Chairman

The Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce held its 98th Annual Meeting at the Dothan Civic Center Oct. 31. Over 500 members attended the luncheon event which was filled with networking opportunities and a delicious meal catered by The Landing and Five Star Catering.

The celebration was all about “Inspired Teamwork.” Highlights included Scott Applefield, Aero-One Aviation / Full Moon Bar-B-Que / Winco, LLC dba Bojangles’, passing the gavel to Beau Benton, Larry Blumberg and Associates (LBA Hospitality). During his outgoing remarks Applefield stated, “It has been a pleasure to work with so many great individuals, not to mention the chamber staff. The accomplishments made over the past year from the recruitment of industry to bringing more jobs to the area have been exciting.”

When Applefield became chairman he pledged to uphold the lofty standards that had been set by those that had come before him. He reminded members that “One generation plants the trees for others to enjoy the shade.” And following in the footsteps of many great leaders in Dothan’s history, Applefield’s actions over the past year demonstrated that promise. He constantly demonstrated that it is each of our jobs to plant the trees of education, infrastructures and leadership so our forest will continue to develop and grow strong. So the generation that follows can continue to enjoy the beautiful shade.

The leadership of the chamber, along with the gavel, was then passed from Applefield to Benton, who thanked Applefield for all his commitment and hard work during his term. He also took a moment to thank Applefield’s wife, Laurie, for sharing her husband with the DACC during the past year. After taking the podium, Benton hit the ground running with one word to the membership “Opportunity.” He explained, “Everything we do has to be to give each person and business the opportunity for a better quality of life.”

Benton pledged to continue the regionalism efforts in Houston, Dale, Henry and Geneva counties and to also keep the ball rolling on all the workforce development taking place within our great city and county in order to continue the growth of the Wiregrass economy,

Another great highlight at this year’s meeting was the chance to hear inspirational speaker Inquoris “Inky” Johnson. Johnson’s dream had always been to play professional sports, but due to a serious injury in 2006 while playing college football changed his life. He found that everything he thought that was so important really wasn’t that important at all.

“We have a greater purpose,” exclaimed Johnson, “All of us, no matter how great or successful, we have a purpose. As long as you live and try to make someone’s life okay, your life will be okay. What’s your purpose?”

“I’ve had to learn that only my hand is paralyzed, my purpose isn’t! The only thing I ever wanted to do was to make my community better. My cause wasn’t paralyzed, only my arm,” said Johnson. “Our success isn’t predicted upon whether we felt like it, if it was, we would never accomplish anything. When we’re driven by impact, then we can make a change. We are all in the same business, the people business.”

In closing, Johnson asked one favor of the audience … not to burn out on life. “Never allow life to make you forget why you do or love what you do. Keep living strong and with compassion!”

Other luncheon activities included the recognition of the 2017 Ambassador and Diplomat Star of the Year – Joseph Brackins, Army Aviation Center Federal Credit Union and Team of the Year – The Magnificent Seven. Congratulations to team members Lisa Baity, Alabama Kidney Foundation; Stacey Brackin, Wiregrass Rehabilitation Center Inc.; Sheila Cestaro, WDHN TV-18; Erika Francks Hardin, Sarrell Dental Center; and Brandon Ziegenfelder, Slingluff United Insurance. Special award recognitions were also given to the Chamber’s 2017 Lifetime Members – John Beasley, Leslie Blumberg, (Ret.) Col. Tom Boyle, Steve McCarroll, Linda McGhee and (Ret.) Gen. Roger Peterson.

A BIG shout out also goes to our annual meeting sponsors: Platinum – SunSouth Bank; Gold – Alabama Municipal Electric Authority, Michelin North America Inc. and Southeast Alabama Gas District; and Silver – Larry Blumberg and Associates (LBA Hospitality).

Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman Beau Benton, Larry Blumberg and Associates (LBA Hospitality) thanks Immediate Past Chairman Scott Applefield, Areo-One Aviation / Full Moon Bar-B-Que / Winco, LLC dba Bojangles’, for his service and dedication over the past year.

A national magazine recently recognized the innovative care found at Westside Terrace Healthcare. The facility received a Certificate of Merit from McKnight’s Long-Term Care News for its blend of resident-centric care and technology solutions. The honor is part of the publication’s Excellence in Technology Awards.

Westside was among the first long-term care facilities in Alabama to implement a newly approved management and dispensing system. In May, they started using ReadyMeds STATPack powered by Cubex, which is offered through Turenne PharMedCo Pharmacy Services. This has allowed Westside to improve access to medication and safety, while decreasing costs and saving valuable time.

“Better methods are just part of better caring. Traditional methods to fill and dispense prescriptions can take anywhere from 45 minutes to four hours, depending on the conditions,” said Kristie Hughes, Westside administrator. “Part of keeping our residents in their optimum health is making sure they have the medications they need when they need them.”

The five-star facility also looks to smarter solutions to help it keep up their government quality ratings and provide a safe environment for their residents. Seven years ago, they subscribed to The Compliance Store to help them manage regulatory compliance research and to stay on track with industry changes.

“This web-based service plays a pivotal role in helping us with risk management, staff education and training as well as making sure our environment is in compliance,” Hughes said. “We now have more time to invest in caring for our residents and making sure we are doing everything we can to make this a home for them.”

Coast and Cotton, a Dothan, Alabama-based gift towel manufacturer and distributor was recently featured in HGTV Magazine’s November 2017 “Shop With The Stars” section. Jillian Harris, host of HGTV’s Love It Or List It, Too, chose Coast and Cotton’s Farm & Table Teacups design as one of her favorite kitchen towels. The magazine is currently the 6th best-selling monthly magazine on newsstands with a 1.3 million circulation.

National attention is not new for the company, having been selected as one of Cooking Light Magazine’s 35 “Hottest Gifts of 2015” in their Christmas issue and featured on NBC’s The Today Show in their “Stuff We Love” Mothers Day 2016 gift segment.

Dothan, Alabama natives Sydney and Will Hewitt founded Coast and Cotton in 2014 and launched their first gift towel collection in 2015. After years of moving and traveling with the military, they saw a need for thoughtfully designed, functional products that reminded them of home. What started with a few locally-inspired gift towel designs has quickly grown to several thousand, hand-

designed and drawn by Sydney, that represent places and pastimes from Maine to California and everywhere in between.

“Our designs represent the pride we have in the places that make us who we are, from where we were born and raised, to where we raise our kids, to where we escape from

it all. Each design is thoughtfully developed and is intended to become a part of the story it represents.”

The 100% cotton flour sack material is processed in the US and designed and printed in the company’s own facilities using eco-friendly, water-based dyes that are heat-cured to ensure colorfastness. Coast and Cotton currently sells its towels through over 500 retailers

throughout the United States including well-known retailers such as Nordstrom, L. L. Bean Home, and Ballard Designs. Locally, Coast and Cotton towels can be found at Naomi and Olive in Downtown Dothan.

For more information, contact Sydney Hewitt at [email protected] or go to www.coastandcotton.com.

One Dothan-area mother, Jeanne Walding, is on a mission to appropriately honor her daughter, April, who passed away recently at age 31, from complications due to a rare genetic chromosome deficiency. April’s condition created severe limitations and disabilities for her over her lifespan. One limitation she didn’t have was her love of her local public library.

Although April was never able to acquire the skill of reading, she truly loved books and her visits to the Library. She frequently went home with more than 40 books after each Library visit. She enjoyed being read to and spent countless hours looking at picture books and making up her own stories. April also took great pleasure in attending Story and Craft Hour and Tail Waggin’ Tutors. Going to the library was April’s favorite outing.

The April Walding Memorial Fund has been set up as an effort to raise funds for the Dothan Houston County Main Library’s Toddler Room to be named after April, as well as create a lasting endowment that will augment library services to children on an annual basis for years to come.

“As well as memorializing April, our hope is that more children with disabilities will be encouraged to visit the library and take advantage of what the library provides. There would be no greater memorial to April than for other children to experience the same joy April found in the Library,” said Ms. Walding.

You may contribute to the April Walding Memorial Fund via the GoFundMe link www.gofundme.com/4fthrmg or directly to the library. Checks should be made payable to The Dothan Houston County Library System. In the FOR line on your check write, “April Walding Memorial” and then mail to DHCLS, 445 N. Oates St., Dothan, Alabama 36303.

Darty Real Estate Welcomes Wilkins To

TeamLan Darty

Real Estate and Development is pleased to announce the newest member to its team Adrienne Wilkins.

Wilkins is putting down roots in the Wiregrass with her husband, daughter

and bulldog. The Wilkins relocated to Dothan three years ago when Matt accepted a position with the National Wild Turkey Federation. Matt’s family is from the Wiregrass and they wanted to raise their family close to home.

Adrienne is a graduate from Louisiana State University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and began her career in marketing, customer service and sales in the beverage industry. After 11 years in sales, she began her career in real estate last spring in the Eufaula market.

Wilkins joined the Lan Darty team as a residential agent in September. She is dedicated to serving the community by helping others find homes and land. When asked about why she chose a career in real estate, she stated “Nothing is more fulfilling than guiding someone through the process of a purchase and seeing the joy of what is to come. What I love about real estate is helping someone accomplish something they may have thought was impossible.”

For more information or to contact Wilkins, call (334) 699-2300 or visit www.landarty.com.

Michael J. Ramsey, MD, FAAP, pediatrician and shareholder at Dothan Pediatric Healthcare Network was presented with the Marsha Raulerson Advocacy Award in September for his steadfast service to children beyond the usual scope of practice through strong and faithful dedication to better policies for improved child health at the local, state, and national levels.

Created in 2011, the award is named in honor of Marsha Raulerson, MD, FAAP, of Brewton, Alabama, who has worked tirelessly for children in Alabama during her more than 30 years of practicing community pediatrics through consistent and effective advocacy for children’s programs and policies at the local, state, and national levels.

Nominations are accepted for members in good standing with the American Academy of Pediatrics and its Alabama chapter. The recipient must also be involved in chapter activities for at least five years, demonstrate passion and efficacy for child advocacy issues, and encourage advocacy development within the AAP.

“I can think of no other chapter member who has, in recent years, demonstrated a spirit of advocacy for the children of Alabama,” stated outgoing president of the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Cathy Wood, MD, FAAP. “In addition to creating the Choose to Have a Healthy Family, Alabama! Campaign, which resulted in pediatricians across the state using social media to educate parents, Dr. Ramsey continues to use video

technology and social media even today in his own practice to educate parents about child health issues. Dr. Ramsey went above and beyond by staging a massive public relations and advocacy campaign in 2012, 2015 and 2016 to avert disaster in Alabama’s state funding for Medicaid. He was truly the leader in our state, writing letters to the editor, using social media to spread the word, conducting massive letter writing campaigns, hosting news conferences, and engaging in countless media interviews on the topic.”

Caring for the healthcare needs of children in the Wiregrass region has been the mission of Dothan Pediatric Clinic since being founded in 1953 by Dr. William Lies, III.

For more information, contact Debbie Yurevich, marketing director - staff physician recruiter, at (334) 793-1881, ext. 2272 or [email protected].

This month, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics presented their occupational projections for the period of 2016-2026. During this period they expect that national employment will increase by 11.5 million, to 167.6 million, while the labor force is expected to grow to 169.7 million. During this period, the labor force participation rate is expected to continue the 20-year trend of decline to 61 percent in 2026 based on Census Bureau

estimates of 281.0 persons being 16 years or older in 2026.Series title: (Seas) Labor Force Participation Rate Labor force status: Civilian labor force participation rate Type of data: Percent or rate Age: 16 years and over

The labor force share of all age cohorts (16-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54 and 55 and older) are estimated to increase only for the 35-44 and 55 and over age cohorts between 2016 and 2026, with the largest percentage increase being those 55 and older. The 55 and older cohort is expected to make up 24.8% of the workforce in 2026 (Source: www.bls.gov/emp).

Of the top 10 projected fastest growing occupations, five are health care related: home health aides, personal care aides, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, physical therapist assistants.
