THE LOCATION | WHITEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA MSA Chartered in 1873, Whiteville, North Carolina is named for James B. White, who owned over two thousand acres of land, including a plantation named Marsh Castle. Whiteville’s beginnings, however, date back to 1733. The town was originally part of a 640 acre tract inherited by attorney John Burgin and his wife, Margaret. Whiteville had long been an agricultural community, but better roads and communications in the early twentieth century helped Whiteville to develop into a town. By 1930 White-ville had a business district with practically every type of merchandise store. Whiteville, however, remained a center for farming in North Carolina; its three main crops were tobacco, strawberries, and peanuts. With four highways leading into town, farmers could ship crops throughout the state. Between 1920 and 1930, Whiteville’s population increased by over thirty-percent. Today, Whiteville is the largest town in Columbus County and serves as the county seat.

Whiteville is situated 50 miles of west Wilmington, North Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean. As of 2021, the estimated population was 5,357 residents. In the past two decades, the population steadily grew by 9.9% from 2000 to 2021. However, the population of Whiteville is expected to decrease by 1.4% by 2026. The median house-hold income stands at $33,326 as of 2021; the average household income is $53,757. 22.6% of all households have a household income over $75,000 annually. There are currently 2,684 housing units in Whiteville. Of that, 52.3% are owner-occupied. The median home value is $124,646 (2021) and is estimated to increase by 9% to $135,897 in 2026. The median age of residents is 42.9 years old. 79.9% of all residents were of adult age (18+ years old). Additionally, 21.6% of all residents have college baccalaureate or post-graduate degrees.

ATTRACTIONSThe city of Whiteville is home to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences’ satellite museum, the North Carolina Museum of Forestry. Exploration Station, another museum in the area, features a farmhouse, a bank, a make-believe hospital, a general store, and a schoolroom. Brunswick Town State Historic Site, and Moores Creek National Battlefield are places of historic interest near Whiteville. Boating, fishing, hiking, picnicking, and camping facilities are provided by the Lumber River State Park, Lake Waccamaw State Park, and Singletary Lake State Park. Residents of the city also organize the Columbus County Fair, Fire Ant Festival, and North Carolina Pecan Harvest Festival every year. The nearest airport to Whiteville is Wilmington International Airport (ILM) which is 46 miles away. Other nearby airports include Fayetteville Regional Airport (46.2 miles), and Myrtle Beach International Airport (47.4 miles).

ECONOMY & EDUCATIONWhiteville’s mid-Atlantic location places the city directly between New York City and Miami and provides local companies with an ease of distribution for their products to the entire population of the East Coast. Additionally, Whiteville’s close proximity to the Port of Wilmington gives industry leaders the cost efficiencies in distributing their products that are necessary to compete effectively. The area’s largest employers include Council Tool Co., Gore Trailer Manufacture, National Spinning Co., Pridgen Woodworks and Top Tobacco Co. There 47 colleges within 100 miles enrolling a total of 163,097 students. The top rated college in the area is University of North Carolina at Wilmington in Wilmington. The largest college in the area is Wake Technical Community College enrolling 21,872 students.
