eCall is a European initiative intended to bring rapid assistance to motorists involved in a collision anywhere in the European Union. eCall was made mandatory in all new cars sold within the EU as of March 31, 2018. In the event of a serious road accident, an emer-gency call (E112) is manually or automatically initiated from a ve-hicle to an emergency agency, and supplemented by sending a minimum set of data (MSD) carrying relevant vehicle and position information.

What is the difference between eCall and NG eCall?



Advantages ❙ Fast due to no waiting time for MSD transmission (MSD with SIP Invite) ❙ Robust solution – uses packet data services with error correction/retransmission ❙ High data rates (several Mbps) for packet versus in-band modem communications (< 560 bps under best channel conditions)

■ Enables fast transmission of large amounts of data ❙ Easily extensible

■ Other data, e.g. vehicle diagnostics, medical/health, crash and surrounding environmental sensors, vehicle deceleration profile

■ Other media types, e.g. video telephony, video stream, telepresence, high-quality audio, text for disability access, text for language translation

❙ No interruption of voice conversations due to concurrent voice services ❙ Easily harmonized standard across other wireless interfaces, e.g. 5G networks

Current challenges for operators ❙ 4G is more cost efficient for operators, but it requires investments in the infrastructure

❙ 3GPP Rel.14 NG eCall indicator needs to be implemented

Current challenges for OEMs and TIER1sWith 4G, networks move from a circuit switched network to an all-IP network ▷ eCall uses CS based in-band modem data communications and needs to be modified to support LTE and IMS for MSD data transmission

Keep in mind that cars typically last around 15 years (compared to 2 years for mobile phones). The issue of how in-band modem eCall deployments in cars will continue to be supported as network technology migrates to IMS needs to be considered.
