eCall is a European initiative intended to bring rapid assistance to motorists involved in a collision anywhere in the European Union. eCall was made mandatory in all new cars sold within the EU as of March 31, 2018. In the event of a serious road accident, an emer-gency call (E112) is manually or automatically initiated from a ve-hicle to an emergency agency, and supplemented by sending a minimum set of data (MSD) carrying relevant vehicle and position information.

❙ LTE connection is required for IVS ❙ IMS as service enabler in LTE is the basis for NG eCall ❙ Minimum set of data (MSD) sent in SIP Invite VoLTE emergency call (during call setup)

❙ NG eCall is differentiated by routing to PSAP using following resource names: ■ urn:service:sos.ecall.manual (manual eCall) ■ urn:service:sos.ecall.automatic (automatic eCall) ■ urn:service:test.sos.ecall (test eCall)

❙ NG eCall is part of 3GPP Release 14 ❙ IVS needs to read network indicator eCallOverIMS-Support in the SystemInformationBlockType1 (SIB1) message

❙ CSFB used when eCall over IMS is not supported and only legacy eCall is supported (recommended)

Keep in mind that cars typically last around 15 years (compared to 2 years for mobile phones). The issue of how in-band modem eCall deployments in cars will continue to be supported as network technology migrates to IMS needs to be considered.
