Presentation The Moroccan Association of Radiation Protection (AMR) has the great pleasure to organize the 4th

African Regional IRPA congress (AFRIRPA04), 13-17 September 2014, Rabat, Morocco. The previous Regional IRPA congresses were held in South Africa (2003), Egypt (2007) and Kenya (2010).Africa is facing a rapid growth in the use of nuclear techniques in various socio-economic sectors: medicine, industry, agriculture, research & training, etc. Most African countries have now their own nuclear legislation. Scientists and professionals involved in the use of nuclear techniques are aware of the misuse of these beneficial techniques and their potential harmful effects. Therefore, they have tried to harmonize their activities in the field of radiation protection through the creation of national, regional and international associations. The medical sector is the most important user of ionizing radiation in Africa. Many hospitals have diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, interventional radiology and radiotherapy departments and then a huge part of the population; either professionals or patients are concerned by radiation protection. For this fourth edition, the main theme is: "Strengthening of Radiation Protection Infrastructures in support to the Health Sector in Africa". The AFRIRPA04 will also enable scientists and professionals to discuss and exchange their expertise in all the fields involved with Radiation Protection. All the stakeholders of this congress (international, regional and national associations of radiation protection; physicians; physicists; individuals...) are kindly invited to contribute to this AFRIRPA04 by submitting their abstracts and by an active participation to improve and to enhance the quality of Radiation Protection and to disseminate the culture of Radiation Protection in Africa.

About AMR

The Moroccan Association of Radiation Protection (Association Marocaine de Radioprotection–AMR) was established in September 2002 with the following goals:

- Setting up, outside administrative and official channels, a framework for discussion and exchange of information between the different actors in the field of radiation protection and working towards, where appropriate in liaison with other national or foreign associations, the strengthening of radiation protection in different sectors, through the organisation of seminars, conferences etc.;

- Promoting the establishment of a network of African Associations of Radiation Protection. This objective would be facilitated by the existence of active national associations

AMR aims to:

- Encourage activities and information exchange in the field of radiation protection and related areas;- Assist in informing both the public and the professionals on the problems and requirements related to radiation protection for the protection of man and the environment;- Promote professional training in radiationprotection.- The Association may co-operate with any other body or association, at national or international level, which has similar goals.

Welcome

The Moroccan Association of Radiation Protection (AMR) cordially invites you to attend the 4rd

African Regional IRPA congress (AFRIRPA04)which will take place in Rabat, Morocco 13-17September 2014.

The congress offers a valuable opportunity for specialists in Radiation protection and medical fields to meet and discuss all aspects of the use of ionizing radiations in Africa. Therefore, we encourage the international community of scientists, engineers and professionals to work together to make this event a successful meeting in order to help African community to accompany the important advances in the use of nuclear techniques and radioactive sources currently in a phase of rapid growth and change.

The Local Organizing Committee consists of experts and professionals from national organizations and associations engaged in the field of the use of nuclear techniques and ionizing radiations in various domains, including medical sector.

The Steering Committee is composed of the representatives of all African and international associations and organizations contributing to the organization of AFRIRPA04.

The Scientific Committee is constituted of leadingworldwide experts in the Radiation Protection in different domains using nuclear techniques and ionizing radiations.

On behalf of the organizing committee, I hope sincerely to work with you for the success of this international event dedicated to Africa.

Abdelmajid CHOUKRIAFRIRPA04 Chairman

Objectives:

- To understand and to promote radiation protection culture in all applications

- To enable scientists and professionals from Africa and worldwide to discuss and exchange their expertise in all the fields involved with Radiation Protection.

- To harmonize and coordinate the activities of societies evolving in the field of radiation protection by inspiring from international experience.

- To strengthen the cooperation between professional societies, international organizations, regulators, NGOs, and key players in society,

- To encourage the creation of new national Radiation Protection Associations through Africa and their invitation to affiliate to IRPA

- To help African community to accompany the important advances in the use of nuclear techniques and radioactive sources currently in rapid growth.

- To encourage the participation of young scientists and women from Africa.

About Rabat

Rabat is the capital city of Morocco in North Africa. Over 2 million people live in Rabat, making it the country's second largest city. Located on the Atlantic coast in the north-west of Morocco, the site is the product of a fertile exchange between the Arabo-Muslim past and Western modernism. The inscribed city encompasses the new town conceived and built under the French Protectorate from 1912 to the 1930s, including royal and administrative areas, residential and commercial developments and the Jardins d’Essais botanical and pleasure gardens. It also encompasses older parts of the city dating back to the 12thcentury. The new town is one of the largest and most ambitious modern urban projects built in Africa in the 20thcentury and probably the most complete. The older parts include Hassan Mosque (begun in 1184) and the Almohad ramparts and gates, the only surviving parts of the project for a great capital city of the Almohad caliphate as well as remains from the Moorish, or Andalusian, principality of the 17thcentury.Rabat has an airport, Rabat-Sale Airport, just outside of tow. Most visitors will arrive by trainfrom Casablanca (where the main internationalairport is). Frequent trains from Casablanca take an hour to reach Rabat. Long-distance buses are also readily available from every major town in Morocco.

Young Scientists Award

ChairladyPr. Oum Keltoum HAKAM, AMR Vice President

[email protected]. Alfred Hefner, Executive Council Member of IRPA [email protected]

The use of radiation requires education and training of professionals in the field of radiation safety to ensure competences in this field. The promotion of young scientists and professionals is therefore of high importance for the African societies. To this end IRPA offers its support by organizing an award for the best scientific or professional contributions to African Regional Congress of IRPA to be held in Rabat from 13-17 September 2014.

National societies will be responsible for the nomination of their candidate; they are expected to support the participation of the candidate in the congress. However, the organizing committee will make efforts to support the participation fees of these young award candidates. There will be also a possibility for young radiation Protection specialists participating to AFRIRPA04 to apply for financial support from the Montreal Foundation.Distributions are made to support participation at congresses of students and young professionals preferably from developing countries and countries that do not have IRPA Associate Societies. They are normally made directly to individuals or through the Support Committees for International and Regional Congresses”. But the National Societies must fulfill also the term of references explained at the IRPA website (Montreal Fund). The nomination of candidates must be submitted to the AFRIRPA04 Regional Congress Young Scientist and Professional Award Committee before March 31, 2014. A detailed abstract, a CV and an explanatory statement must accompany the nomination from the nominating society. The retained candidatures by the committee will have to submit a full text of their article before May 31, 2014. The presentation will be integrated into the

scientific programme with an oral presentation of their paper at the Congress. The Young Scientist and Professional Award Committee will elect the award winning contribution. The Young Scientists and Professional Award

Committee can award more than one contribution (normally three awards: gold; silver and bronze). The award will carry remuneration. For inquiries and nominations contact the chairlady of the Young Scientist and Professional Award Committee, Mme. Prof. Oum Keltoum Hakam, [email protected]
