Saudi Arabia yesterday accused Doha of being

behind over 23,000 Twitter accounts it blames for trying to stoke dissent in Saudi Arabia.

“We found over 23,000 Twitter accounts driven by Qatar, some of them linked to accounts calling for ‘revolution’ in Saudi Arabia,” Information Minister Awwad Saleh Al-Awwad told AFP during a visit to Paris.

They included the @mujtahidd account, which claims to have the inside track on the Saudi royal household and has over 1.8 million followers, he said.

Al-Awwad accused a London-based Saudi dissident, Saad al-Faqih, of being behind the account, “together with Qatar”.

While some of @mujtahidd’s claims have proven false, it reported the death of Saudi King Abdullah

Six principles guide us in fighting terror: FMDT News NetworkManama

The six guiding principles read out by Egypt’s

Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry at the end of the Cairo summit are the underlying position of the four Gulf Arab countries in confronting the terrorism of Daesh or Iran, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifah has said.

“These key principles are

agreed upon not only by the four countries but also by the whole world,” he said during the press conference in Cairo after a meeting of the foreign ministers of four countries led by Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

Asked whether there was evidence of Muslim Brotherhood’s activities that may be an act of sabotage in the Kingdom of Bahrain, he said: “As a group, the Muslim Brotherhood has

clearly harmed Egypt and our countries and thus it is a terrorist organization.”

Anyone who sympathises with them or claims to be a part of them will be judged on this basis, Shaikh Khalid added.

The Minister said that the Council will discuss this issue in its upcoming meeting in Bahrain.

He noted that Cairo meeting was a coordination meeting that came after the

negative response of Qatar to the demands presented to the Emir of Kuwait, stressing that the decisions to be taken, as the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry said, require exceptional thoroughness, due to their high importance in affecting the situation and clarifying the four countries’ stance.

He added that all our decisions will be timely and studied thoroughly from all aspects.

On the expected international support to the measures taken against Qatar, the Minister said:

“We need to be clear, there are various sources that support terrorism in the region, and there is a difference between countries like us that fight terrorists, and countries that harbour and support terrorist officially or secretly. This is what we want to shed light on and attract the attention of the international community to.”

Mosul

Iraqi forces yesterday battled

the last remaining Islamic State group fighters in Mosul’s Old City, where the UN said up to 20,000 civilians are trapped and in “extreme danger”.In neighbouring

Syria, US-backed forces are facing fierce

resistance from IS as they wage a parallel offensive to

recapture the city of Raqa from the jihadists.

The fighting in both cities is taking place in densely populated residential neighbourhoods, posing a major threat to civilians as diehard jihadists put up a desperate last stand.

“Our estimate at this stage is that in the final pockets of (Mosul’s) Old City, there could be as many as 15,000 civilians, possibly even as high as 20,000,” UN humanitarian coordinator in Iraq Lise Grande said.

“They’re in extreme danger from bombardment, from artillery crossfire. The (IS) fighters that are still there are still directly targeting civilians if they try and leave,” she said.

More than eight months after the start of the operation to retake Mosul from IS, the jihadists have gone from fully controlling the city to holding a small pocket on the west bank of the River Tigris that flows through it.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi congratulated the Iraqi people and the security forces on the “achievement of this major victory in Mosul,” but the battle is not over yet.

Damage worse than fearedIraqi forces are now between

“80 to 100 metres (yards)” from the Tigris River, which marks the eastern boundary of IS-held territory in the Old City, said Staff Lieutenant General Abdulghani al-Assadi, a senior commander in the elite Counter-Terrorism Service.

“But that doesn’t mean, for example, that we will reach the river today or tomorrow, because our movement is very slow,” Assadi said, attributing that pace to efforts to protect civilians.

The battle for Mosul has pushed 915,000 to flee their homes, nearly 700,000 of whom are still displaced.

“We exceeded our worst case scenario more than a month ago. In our very worst-case scenario, we thought that 750,000 people would flee,” Grande said.

The damage caused by the fighting in west Mosul -- and the cost of addressing it -- is huge.

There are “44 residential neighbourhoods in western Mosul. Six are nearly completely destroyed... Twenty-two neighbourhoods are moderately damaged and 16 are lightly damaged,” Grande said.

Based on a preliminary assessment, the first phase of “stabilisation” in west Mosul -- which includes basic services, infrastructure, housing, education and police stations -- will cost $707 million. That is nearly double the expected figure, “because the level of damage in western Mosul is far higher than what we feared it would be,” she said.

Heavy civilian tollAs Iraq fights to retake Mosul, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces -- an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters -- have been battling IS in its de facto Syrian capital Raqa.

The SDF broke into Raqa on June 6 after a months-long operation to encircle the city and earlier this week penetrated its historic heart.

Tens of thousands of civilians are believed to be trapped inside

the city, and there are fears the jihadists are using them as human shields.

The SDF assault has been backed by intense air strikes by the US-led coalition fighting IS, which the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said has exacted a heavy toll on civilians.

At least 224 civilians, including 38 children, have been killed in air strikes since the SDF entered the city, the Observatory said.

The Britain-based monitor said it did not have a toll for civilians killed in other ways, including by other military operations, mines, or while trying to flee the city.

But the coalition pushed back against the report, saying its “critics” were not conducting “detailed assessments”.

The coalition estimates some 2,500 jihadists are defending Raqa.

So far, 311 jihadists and 106 SDF fighters have been killed in the battle for the city, according to the Observatory, which has a wide network of sources on the ground.

The Observatory also reported that a large shipment of weapons, ammunition and armoured vehicles was delivered by the coalition to the SDF via Iraq.

The loss of Mosul and Raqa, IS’s two most emblematic strongholds, would be a major blow for the jihadists, effectively ending the cross-border “caliphate” they declared in June 2014.

Kozhikode

The Kerala youth, who were killed while fighting for

the Islamic State in Syria, were the members of an extreme Salafi group in Bahrain before they joined the outfit (IS), The Times of India reported yesterday.

Sources told TOI that the two Salafi preachers from Kerala - one from Mankada in Malappuram and the other from Perumbavoor in Ernakulam - were instrumental in radicalising the youth. Four members of the group, including Muhadis from Vandoor, were killed in military operations within a span four months in Syria.

The Salafi preachers had organised classes at a religious centre in Bahrain and at other places where they injected the extreme Salafism in the youth. A few members of the group were working with a catering company in Bahrain.

Sources said the preachers are members of a splinter group among the Kerala Salafis and have no connection with any of the established Salafi organisations in the state. One among them is currently in Mangaluru and his activities are closely monitored by the security agencies.

After getting initiated into extreme Salafism, the youth were learnt to have contacted

some well-known Salafi scholars from Kerala who went to Bahrain at different times. “The Salafi scholars did not entertain the youth as they were found to have strong leanings towards the Islamic State,” sources said.

The youth later came into contact with Abdul Rashid Abdulla, the former employee

of the Peace International School in Kozhikode, who had already become a full-fledged IS cadre. It is suspected that the Salafi preachers had a role in helping the youth in establishing contact with Abdul Rashid, who is learnt to have steered them to the IS stronghold in Syria. Rashid himself has landed

in Afghanistan and is co-ordinating the propaganda activities of Kerala module.

The unravelling of the Bahrain group has confirmed the suspicion of the security agencies that the influence of the IS runs deep in Kerala than what was initially thought to be. The number of Malayalis who joined the terror outfit could be much higher than the official estimate which is based on missing cases. IS is suspected to have recruited more Malayalis working in the Gulf countries. Authorities feel that the members of the families of the IS recruits are either unaware of their migration to IS strongholds

or are keeping mum due to fear of being ostracized by the society. Insights gained regarding the Bahrain group have once again forced the law enforcing agencies to sharpen their focus on the Salafi groups in Kerala. Many youth in the Salafi organisations have lost sense of direction after the innumerable splits in the movement.

Some of these Salafis are indirectly propagating the ideology of the IS though they vehemently oppose the activities of the terror group in the open. Many youth who are associated with extreme Salafi groups finally end up in the tentacles of the Islamic State.

Court extends detention of accountant for 15 days

DT News NetworkManama

The High Criminal Court extended the detention

of a Bahraini accountant accused of embezzlement for another 15 days. The accountant is believed to have pocketed BD97,000 from a bank account and transferred to his girlfriend in Thailand. Aged in his early twenties, he was hired by a local bank to work as a teller after he enrolled in an accounting course.

He smartly accessed to the profile of one of the bank’s customers and he changed his mobile phone number, so he doesn’t receive SMS notifications when any banking transactions made involving his account. The young Bahraini man reportedly embezzled the

amount by making 11 withdrawals.

The victim discovered the misconduct after he went to the bank to withdraw money but he was told there weren’t sufficient funds. After investigations, it was found that the defendant was responsible for the embezzlement.

And he was arrested.

During questioning, the accused man revealed that he was in love with the Thai woman and he wanted to travel to Thailand to spend big on her. “She was in Thailand and she requested me to transfer money to her. She didn’t believe the amount of money she was receiving. I was deeply in love with her,” he told prosecutors.

Bahrain, has been offered help from the authorities as well as from members of the public to clear his debts and travel back to India, it is learnt.

Earnest was stranded in Bahrain after a travel ban was placed on him as he

owed money to two different companies. He accumulated the debts when his construction company failed. The 62-year old has also been struggling with illness in recent years

“The travel ban was placed as he has a BD3400 debt to a company here. Recently, we also found out that he owned another firm over a thousand dinars and he needed to pay that as well. But after discussions these firms agreed

to settle it for a smaller amount so we were hopeful of resolving everything. We received all the help from the Indian Embassy and the authorities.

The embassy had requested Alocious to stay in the LMRA shelter so that they can speed up the progress on his case,” Indian Community Relief Fund Bahrain volunteer Sayed Haneef said.

Aloucias could not be reached for comment.

Gulf Air boosts securityIntegrated F5 DDoS Hybrid Defender to safeguard operationsManama

Gulf Air yesterday revealed a cybersecurity step-

change as part of an ongoing campaign to safeguard its operations and deliver industry-leading customer service.

The move, according to Gulf Air, helped reinforce its network perimeter to pre-empt and combat Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, improve data centre and application-level security and further enhance data and access protection measures.

A key component of Gulf Air’s DDoS strategy is the deployment of the F5® DDoS Hybrid Defender. This ensures high line rate capabilities without impacting legitimate traffic. Crucially, the solution is compatible with Gulf Air’s current perimeter security controls to minimise maintenance efforts.

“Combating DDoS attacks require a purpose-built system-level architecture that detects and mitigates increasingly sophisticated, complex and deceptive attacks,” said Dr. Jassim

Haji, Director of Information Technology, Gulf Air.

“The solution delivers instantaneous controls and security measures against complex threats, exploits, saturation attacks, with an in-depth security mechanism that inspects application-layer events. It offers protection at

all layers, protecting protocols – including those employing SSL and TLS encryption – as well as stopping DDoS bursts, randomized HTTP floods, cache bypass, and other attacks that can disrupt Gulf Air’s critical applications.”

Gulf Air’s new DDoS capabilities fits into a wider

digital transformation vision that was recently underscored by becoming the world’s first airline to achieve seven IT ISO certifications.

In 2012, it became the first business in Bahrain to introduce private cloud computing.

Gulf Air currently runs

over 200 applications online supported by F5 technology, including email services, reservation systems and enterprise resource planning (ERP) and Electronic Flight Bag, eEnablement setup for newly introduced aircrafts.

“We made a strategic decision to partner with F5 because they are ranked as one of the top leaders in enterprise security,” said Dr. Haji.

“F5 has successfully provisioned crucial services to users and customers in an efficient and secure manner for the past eight years. We are now proud to announce that we can protect the Gulf Air network from possible threats that are initiated from legitimate secure traffic based on behaviour, rather than relying on traditional security measures.”

Taj El Khayat, Gulf, Levant & North Africa Director, F5 Networks, said: “F5 DDoS Hybrid Defender is not simply a collection of security point products but a tightly integrated system to defend against today’s most damaging DDoS attacks.”

The Ministry of Labour & Social Development

is organising an awareness seminar for the labourers in coordination with the Embassy of India, Pakistan, Nepal, Philipines and Bangladesh to Bahrain.

The awareness seminar is to be held under the patronage Undersecretary of Labour & Social Development on Saturday at the Bahrain Keraleya Samajam (BKS) from 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm.

The seminar is to spread the awareness to a healthy and safe summer for the labourers and prevent any kind of accidents or diseases.

“It is our constant effort to reduce the burden of the labourers in the Kingdom and this seminar is one of our initiative to spread awareness and prevent any kind of accidents in the near future,” Hussain Al Hussaini, Senior

Occupational Safety Engineer of Ministry of Labour and Social Development told DT News.

“We have been doing this

for the past five years and through this seminar, we are trying to make the labourers aware of all the diseases that they could face in the summer

like heat stroke or sunburn or the diseases they might not be aware of, moreover provide them with preventive measures on reducing occupational

accident.”“Two lectures will be

delivered during the seminar, one of them will be on the heat stress while the other will be on the implementation of work ban campaign. In addition, the seminar will also provide medical check-up related to summer diseases in the presence of the team of doctors and nurse from various hospitals. Also, a number of multi-lingual awareness leaflets will be distributed during this seminar.”

“We want to inform the employees to not violate the work ban of Ministerial order No. (3) as per article No. (192) in Bahrain Labour law. Working during noon time under direct sun rays and open areas from 12 to 4 pm in July and August will invite a penalty against the offender which will be imprisonment for a period not exceeding three months, and a fine not less than BD500 to BD1000 for each worker violating the law,” Al Hussaini added.

Importers urged to fulfil safety standards of toysDT News NetworkManama

The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism,

represented by the Directorate of Standardization and Metrology, has listed “stress removal tools” which is widely used by children and adults alike.

These tools now require importers to fulfill the safety requirements of the games according to the technical regulation No. 01- 131704.

Chief of Standardization and Metrology Mona Alalawi said that the Directorate of Standardization and Metrology has listed these tools within the games regardless of their actual c l a s s i f i c a t i o n because they are used by children. These products will be subject to children’s game technical regulations.

Alalawi stressed that the

game may sometimes pose a danger to children. These

products may contain small

detachable parts that cause children to choke or may

contain small lithium batteries

that the child can reach or parts may contain small magnetic balls that kids may swallow them.

She added that such tools have been entering our markets routinely as office tools.

However, lately become so popular and turnout by children is more than adults.

It should be noted that GCC toys technical regulations applied uniformly in the GCC and has been applied in the Kingdom since 2011, and was updated in 2015 to accommodate the development and multiplicity of games and materials in the manufacture.

Bishop Bernard Giovanni Gremoli passes away

DT News NetworkManama

Bishop Bernard Giovanni Gremoli, Bishop Emeritus

of the Apostolic Vicariate of Arabia, passed away yesterday in Florence, Italy. He was 91. The funeral service will be held at the Capuchin Friary of Montughi, Florence on Saturday at 9.30 am. Bishop Gremoli is remembered as a pastor full of zeal and energy in the service of God’s people in the Arabian peninsula, where he served for 29 years as Apostolic Vicar of the largest jurisdiction of the world. He was untiring in his efforts to unite the Catholic faithful who came from many communities and faith traditions. Since his retirement in 2005, Bishop Gremoli lived at the Capuchin Friary at Montughi in Florence, Italy. “He was a very paternal man, knew how to encourage the people and the priests. His generosity was proverbial. Even though he didn’t know Arabic, he succeeded to have very good relations with the rulers of the Emirates. I met him few times because when I became bishop, he retired and left the Gulf. He had a vision of the ministry he had to do. So, he transferred his seat from Aden to Abu Dhabi and it was the right decision, Bishop Camillo Ballin, Apostolic Vicar of Northern Arabia,” said.

Wide Angle

It has been in development for 20 years, at a staggering cost of $8.7 billion. And it is now set to launch in October 2018.In fact, it had been originally proposed in mid-1990s, at a

basic cost of $500 million, and was expected to be launched by 2007.

But, it is now 11 years overdue, and 17 times over the budget. It is the ‘James Webb Space Telescope’, or JWST.As I read a fascinating article about it, titled ‘Eyes in the Sky’

by Jeffrey Kluger (TIME, 3 July 2017), I began to wonder how far this new telescope can help us to look, into the immensity of space and time.

Space telescopes, we know, are different and better than those on earth’s observatories.

As they are launched into, and placed in, outer space (to observe distant planets, galaxies and other astronomical objects) they overcome many problems which ground-based observatories face.

Light pollution and distortion of electromagnetic radiation (scintillation) prevents better views from our planet’s surface. Also, the ultraviolet frequencies, X-rays and gamma rays are blocked by the Earth’s atmosphere.

But, only space telescopes can help us overcome the visual defects of terrestrial instruments. And with the latest technology now available, ground observatories can smoothly record high definition data being streamed from space telescopes.

A few years ago, my daughter and I had watched ‘Hubble 3D’, a fascinating documentary on, not only the making and the launch of NASA’s ‘Hubble Space Telescope’ (HST) in 1990, but also on the repairs undertaken by astronauts flown to it, in a space shuttle.

We had watched it at an Omnimax dome theatre - much greater in size than an IMAX theatre, and in the shape of a dome (like a planetarium) - at the Ontario Science Center, in Toronto.

When NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) of United States discovered that their Hubble Space Telescope’s vision is blurry, because of a faulty mirror, they had to quickly work on it. Or all those millions, spent on it, would go down the drain; or let’s just say, down a black hole.

They sent the first repair team (called Service Mission 1) aboard the space shuttle ‘Endeavour’ in December 1993, and the team installed several instruments and other equipment over ten days.

And, in January 1994, when HST began to show sharper images, NASA declared the mission - one of the most complex missions performed till date - a complete success.

Watching those repairs being done, on the majestic Omnimax screen was an experience I shall never forget; mainly because I realized I was watching a real problem in outer space, being solved by real people. Not a scene from some sci-fi movie, in some make-shift studio of Hollywood.

So, as I read about JWST, I could not help think of HST’s problems and of its service missions.

Unlike HST which is orbiting at a mere 353 miles (569 km) distance from earth, JWST would be placed 1 million miles (1,609,344 km) away!

I am therefore unable to easily shrug off an area of concern.I could be called a cynic. But I know it would be absolutely

impossible for any service team to go 1.6 million kilometres into space to do any repairs if, God forbid, something happens to this $8.7 billion project.

But then, the plus point is this. If all goes well, it will be, once again, a giant leap for mankind.

And, through James Webb Space Telescope, we would be able to boldly see what no man has ever seen before.

French President Emmanuel Macron said he

supported a two-state solution to end the Middle East conflict as he welcomed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the Elysee Palace yesterday.

Speaking publicly on the issue for the first time, Macron said any deal “must recognise the legitimate rights of the Palestinians to have an independent state, but also ensure Israel’s security”.

“There is no viable alternative to a two-state solution,” he said, adding “but today this solution is under threat both on the ground and in people’s minds.”

The UN reported in June that Israel had announced a substantial increase in settlements in the past three months despite a United Nations resolution demanding a halt to the Jewish outposts in occupied Palestinian territory.

Macron said that “France has always condemned the continuation of settlement

building, which is illegal under international law, and has reached an unprecedented level since the beginning of the year”.

His comments come after Donald Trump called on Israelis and Palestinians to make compromises for peace, saying he was “personally

committed” to helping Israel reach a deal with the Palestinians.

Speaking during a trip to the Middle East in May, the US President did not specifically mention the two-state solution, long the focus of international efforts and US Middle East diplomacy.

Both Macron and Abbas said they would support Trump in his efforts to end the impasse.

President Abbas reaffirmed his wish to “work with Donald Trump to conclude a historic peace agreement based on a two-state solution”. (AFP)

New York homeless population up nearly 40pcNew York

The number of people living rough on the streets of New

York increased nearly 40 per cent this year.

An annual survey conducted found 3,892 people on the streets on the night of February 6 -- 39 percent more than the previous year, the city’s department of homeless services announced Wednesday.

Officials attributed the increase to a warmer winter, rent increases outpacing incomes and an ongoing crisis in affordable housing. Median household income increased by 4.8 percent in real dollars compared to a median rent increase of 18.3 percent between 2005 and 2015, the department said.

From 1994 to 2012, New York also saw a net loss of over 150,000 rent-stabilized units across the city, it added. Non-profit organization Coalition for the Homeless says just over 60,000 people are sleeping in New York shelters each night and that in recent years homelessness in the city has hit highs not seen since the 1930s Great Depression.

Battery thrown by passenger catches fire at Istanbul airport

Egypt cuts electricity subsidies

France extends state of emergency for sixth time

stanbul

An external battery pack caught fire yesterday at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport after an angry passenger threw the object

because of an electronic devices ban on flights to the UK, the the airport operator said.

“A passenger declined to surrender a powerbank embarking on a UK bound flight. During the argument he crashed the item on a hard surface and the powerbank caught fire,” TAV Airports said on its official Twitter account.

“No one was injured during the incident,” TAV said, adding that electronic devices were not allowed in the cabin of Britain-bound flights.

The account posted a series of tweets in response to a passenger who said on Twitter that he witnessed a “small explosion and fire” in the boarding area for flights to the United States and the UK.

The passenger, who claimed he was 10 metres (11 yards) away, shared an image with smoke in front of the boarding gate.

The United States lifted Wednesday a ban, which had been in place since March, on carrying large electronic devices such as laptops in the cabin of US-bound flights from the airport.

The ban’s removal came after Turkey began using sophisticated tomography imaging devices for X-ray and ultrasound screening at the airport.

Cairo

Egypt announced a major increase in electricity prices yesterday as authorities continued to cut government

subsidies under an IMF-backed economic reform package.Electricity Minister Mohammed Shaker said prices would

rise by between 18 and 42 percent for household bills starting from this month.

The government is cutting sweeping subsidies as part of a reform programme tied to its three-year $12 billion loan with the International Monetary Fund, which was approved in November.

Shaker told reporters at a press conference that some subsidies remained in place.

“We were supposed to have been completely done with the (electricity) subsidy in the current and next fiscal years,” Shaker said, with the current fiscal year starting on July 1.

“But considering the special situation related to the large increase in the exchange rate, we extended this period to an additional three years.”

Since November, Egyptian authorities have floated the country’s currency, slashed fuel subsidies twice, and adopted a value added tax as part of the programme, which has led to soaring consumer prices.

The value of the pound has since plummeted, with one dollar -- worth 8.8 pounds at the official exchange rate in November -- now worth more than 17 pounds, while annual inflation reached 30.9 percent in May.

Russia blocks UN call for N. Korea sanctions

United Nations

Russia yesterday blocked a UN Security Council

statement calling for “significant measures” in response to North Korea’s launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile.

The United States had circulated the statement for adoption by the 15-member council after announcing plans for a new sanctions resolution, but Russia raised objections, UN diplomats said. The draft statement recalled that the council had agreed to take “further significant measures” in the event of another nuclear test

or missile launch and that the top UN body would “begin to work immediately on such measures.”

Russia blocked the measure, arguing that it had not been verified that the launch involved an intercontinental missile, said a council diplomat.

The United States and the United Nations have said the Hwasong-14 launched on Tuesday was of intercontinental range.

The draft statement included a strong condemnation of the launch, setting the stage for a draft resolution on tougher

sanctions that the United States said it planned to present in the coming days.

Addressing an emergency council meeting on Wednesday, Russian Deputy Ambassador Vladimir Safronkov said Moscow opposed the move, arguing that “sanctions will not resolve the issue.”

“Any attempts to justify a military solution are inadmissible and will lead to unpredictable consequences for the region,” warned Safronkov.

“In the same manner, attempts to economically strangle North Korea are

equally unacceptable, as millions of North Koreans remain in need of humanitarian aid,” he added.

US Ambassador Nikki Haley called the launch “a clear and sharp military escalation” and warned that Washington was ready to use military force “but we prefer not to have to go in that direction.”

The launch, described by leader Kim Jong-Un as a “gift” to Americans as they prepared to celebrate Independence Day, marked a milestone in Pyongyang’s decades-long drive to threaten the US with a nuclear strike. (AFP)

Mars ‘uninhabitable’ than thought: studyParis

Hopes of finding life on Mars, at least on the

surface, were dealt a blow Thursday by a study revealing that salt minerals present on the Red Planet kill bacteria.

In lab tests on Earth, the compounds known as perchlorates killed cultures of the bacteria Bacillus subtilis, a basic life form, a research duo from the University of Edinburgh’s School of Physics and Astronomy reported.

Perchlorates, stable at room temperature, become active at high heat. Mars is very cold.

In the new study, Jennifer Wadsworth and Charles Cockell showed the compound can also be activated by UV light, without heat, in

conditions mimicking those on the martian surface.

It killed bacteria within minutes, said the team, implying the planet was “more uninhabitable than previously

thought.”“If we want to find life on

Mars, we have to take this into consideration and look at trying to find sub-surface life that wouldn’t be exposed to

these conditions,” Wadsworth said. Perchlorates are natural and man-made on Earth, but are more abundant on Mars where they were first recorded by NASA’s Phoenix Lander in 2008.

The fact that perchlorates killed B. subtilis in the presence of UV radiation did not necessarily mean that all other life forms would similarly die, said Wadsworth. Further tests would have to be done to confirm this.

Perchlorates have previously been spotted in lines, thought to be brine streaks, on the surface of Mars.

Their presence was presented as evidence by scientists in 2015 of liquid water on the Red Planet.

A picture taken from the Mast Camera (Mastcam) instru-ment on NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover shows a series of sedimentary deposits in the Glenelg area of Gale Crater.

French lawmakers voted for the sixth time to extend the country’s state of emergency on Thursday as interior

ministry figures showed security forces have thwarted more than one terror attack a month on average this year.

The newly elected parliament, dominated by MPs from centrist President Emmanuel Macron’s new party, voted 137 in favour to 13 against to extend the state of emergency until November.

It gives security forces greater freedom to carry out raids and surveillance and has been in place since November 2015 when a string of jihadist attacks in Paris left 130 people dead

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb argued it was necessary to keep French people safe.

A foiled plot in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille in April, when two men with an arsenal of guns and explosives were arrested days before the presidential election, could have had “dreadful” consequences, he told the Cnews network.

PM Modi pays homage to Indian WWI heroesNew Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday visited the

Indian cemetery in Haifa, Israel, and paid homage to Indian soldiers whose bravery in 1918’s Battle of Haifa is the stuff of legend.

He also laid a wreath at the cemetery on what is the last day of his three-day visit to Israel .

As many as 44 Indian soldiers were killed protecting Haifa from the Ottoman Turks in World War I.

“This is the final resting place for 44 of the Indian soldiers

who sacrificed their lives during World War I to liberate the city,” Modi had said before visiting the site.

The Indian Army commemorates September 23 every year as Haifa Day to pay its respects to the two Indian Cavalry Regiments that helped liberate the city. In the autumn of 1918, the Indian Brigade was a part of the Allied Forces sweeping northwards through Palestine in what is seen as the last great cavalry campaign in history. (TOI/PTI)

It does not, however, explain dark matter, or why there is more matter than anti-matter in the Universe. Critically, the model is incompatible with Einstein’s theory of general relativity -- the force of gravity as we know it does not seem to work at the subatomic quantum scale.

Xicc++The particle, a baryon dubbed Xicc++, contains two heavy “charm” quarks and one “up” quark, and has about four times the mass of a more familiar baryon -- the proton.

“Charm”, “strange” and “beauty”The new particle is the first seen with two heavy quarks. There are six types of quark, with exotic names such as “charm”, “strange” and “beauty”. The “charm”, “top” and “bottom” quarks are the heaviest types.

BaryonsQuarks make up baryons such as protons and neu-trons that comprise most of the mass in the known Universe.Baryons gather together in atoms, which form the mol-ecules that constitute matter.

Large Hadron ColliderThe particle, predicted in the Standard Model of particle physics, was discov-ered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). The col-lider is most famous for discovering the Higgs boson, which confers mass on matter.

Continue testingIts discovery will allow sci-entists to continue test-ing the Standard Model of physics -- the mainstream theory of the fundamental particles that make up mat-ter, and the forces that gov-ern them.

Questions remain

European scientists said they have discovered a new subatomic particle containing a never-before-seen combination of quarks -- the most basic building blocks of matter.

Qatar Airways says flights now exempt from laptop banDoha

Qatar Airways announced yesterday that it had won exemption from a US ban on passengers taking

laptops and tablet computers on flights from its Doha hub.

It is the latest carrier after Abu Dhabi’s Etihad, Dubai’s Emirates and Turkish Airlines to meet new rules imposed by Washington in March for direct flights from 10 airports in Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa.

“Qatar Airways is pleased to confirm that with immediate effect, all personal electronic devices can be carried on board all departures from Hamad International Airport to the United States,” the airline said.

“Qatar Airways and Hamad International Airport have met with all requirements of the US Department of Homeland Security’s new security guidelines.”

Washington drew up the new guidelines after intelligence officials learnt of efforts by the Islamic State group to produce a bomb that could be hidden inside electronic devices.

They required the installation of sophisticated imaging technology for X-ray and ultrasound screening of carry-on devices.

Beach stroll by Modi, Netanyahu causes Internet wavesJerusalem

A beach stroll by Indian Prime Minister Narendra

Modi and Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu caused online waves yesterday, with the two men seen wading barefoot into the surf together.

The beach trip came on the last day of Modi’s visit to Israel, the first-ever by an Indian prime minister. They had gone to the beach to see a demonstration of a mobile water desalination unit.

It was closed to journalists, but images and video were distributed by the Israeli

government showing the two men walking together into the water barefoot at Olga beach in northern Israel.

Some on social media took Netanyahu to task for not sufficiently rolling his pant legs, with the images showing them getting wet.

They later drove together in the mobile water desalination unit -- which looked like a dune buggy -- and sipped samples from wine glasses, even toasting before they did.

Modi and Netanyahu have sought to extend Indian-Israeli cooperation beyond the

billions of dollars in defence deals between them during the three-day visit.

The two leaders presented a series of agreements for cooperation on satellite technology, water and agriculture, as well as the creation of a $40 million innovation fund.

Israel already sells India an average of $1 billion per year in military equipment.

The Jewish country has also excelled at water and agriculture technology, which India has shown an interest in. (AFP)

The US trade deficit shrank in May as American exports hit their highest level in two years. But analysts also said despite

the jump in May, exports were still down for the second quarter, which could weigh on economic growth.

The narrowing deficit, which followed two straight increases, came despite a yawning imbalance with Mexico, which was at its highest for nearly a decade.

Industrial orders in Germany rebounded in May after a slide in April, but fell short of analysts’ hopes for Europe’s

Riyadh

Saudi Aramco said yesterday its recoverable crude oil and

condensate reserves slipped to 260.8 billion barrels at the end of 2016 but its daily crude oil production hit a new record of 10.5 million barrels per day.

Aramco’s reserves stood at 261.1bn in 2015.

Its gas reserves rose to 298.7 trillion standard cubic feet from 297.6tn, Saudi Aramco said in its 2016 annual review.

The company said it had discovered two new oilfields, Jubah and Sahaban, and one new gas field, Hadidah, all located in the Eastern Province, the main oil region in Saudi Arabia, the world’s top crude exporter.

Saudi Arabia’s national oil company plans to list a stake through an initial public offering in 2018 which is expected to be the world’s biggest IPO.

The review did not make a reference to updates on the IPO

process, which is at the heart of Saudi Arabia’s economic transformation program.

“For Saudi Aramco, the most notable feature of the Kingdom’s transformation will be the future offering of part of the company’s shares in local and international stock markets,” said Khalid al-Falih chairman of Aramco and Saudi energy minister.

Aramco, which has exclusive rights to explore and develop Saudi Arabia’s oil and gas,

boosted oil production to a new record of 10.5m barrels per day (bpd) in 2016, from 10.2m bpd in 2015, it said in the review.

Its oil exports rose to 7.6m bpd in 2016 from 7.1m bpd in 2015. Asia still accounts for the lion’s share of Saudi Aramco’s exports at 66 per cent, up from 65pc in 2015, followed by exports to the United States, whose share dropped to 15.8pc from 16.6pc in 2015. (Reuters)

France to end sales of petrol, diesel vehicles by 2040Paris

France will end sales of petrol and diesel vehicles

by 2040 as part of an ambitious plan to meet its targets under the Paris climate accord, new Ecology Minister Nicolas Hulot announced yesterday.

“We are announcing an end to the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040,” Hulot said, calling it a “veritable revolution”.

Hulot acknowledged that reaching the goal would be “tough”, particularly for automakers, but said that

French carmakers Peugeot-Citroen and Renault were well equipped to make the switch.

France is the biggest

manufacturer of electric cars sold in Europe, with the Renault Zoe far outselling other models in 2016. (AFP)

Shares in Saudi Arabia’s cement and steel sectors

rose yesterday after the government cut export tariffs, but Gulf stock markets were mostly weak after a slide in oil prices.

The Saudi government said it was cancelling all export duties on steel for two years to encourage local industries, and would halve cement export tariffs.

Analysts said top-line growth of cement and steel companies was not expected to get a huge boost, but the news was positive for a building materials sector that has been hit hard by the government’s austerity policies in the past couple of years.

Najran Cement, one of the companies with an export licence, rose 2.6 per cent in its heaviest volume since February and three other stocks among the top 10 gainers were also from

the cement industry. Al Yamamah Steel Industries climbed 1.7pc.

The Riyadh index, however, fell 0.9pc, its third straight session of losses. The banking sector was the main drag with heavyweight National Commercial Bank dropping 0.6pc to 50.50 riyals, pulling further away from a 22-month intra-day high hit of 58.00 riyals on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Qatar’s index edged down 0.1pc as 21 shares rose and 12 declined. Foreign funds, which have been net buyers of Qatari shares this week, were neutral yesterday while non-Qatari Gulf investors were net sellers, bourse data showed.

The index is down 10.1pc since June 5, when the diplomatic crisis erupted. Fund managers believe further sanctions, such as a pull-out of bank deposits, remain quite possible in coming days or weeks, but they may hurt the Qatari economy rather than

cripple it.In Abu Dhabi, Dana Gas

fell 1.4pc after sources told Reuters that London’s High Court planned to hold a full hearing in September on efforts by the company to restructure $700 million of its Islamic bonds.

The Abu Dhabi index edged down 0.4pc.

In Dubai the index lost 0.5pc in very low volumes,

hit by a 1.4pc drop in blue chip Emaar Properties and a 1.8pc fall in peer DAMAC Properties.

Cairo’s stock index rose 0.3pc in quiet trade as 16 blue chips advanced and 13 declined. Credit Agricole Egypt jumped 6.9pc in thin volume and investment bank EFG Hermes surged 2.9pc from a four-month low. (Reuters)

Closing BellSAUDI ARABIA lost 0.9pc to 7,204 points.

DUBAI fell 0.5pc to 3,401 points.

ABU DHABI declined 0.4pc to 4,396 points.

QATAR edged down 0.1pc to 8,923 points.

EGYPT edged up 0.3pc to 13,370 points.

KUWAIT added 0.1pc to 6,680 points.

BAHRAIN fell 0.1pc to 1,311 points.

OMAN rose 0.1pc to 5,120 points.

European and Japanese scientists yesterday proudly

unveiled the BepiColombo spacecraft ahead of its seven-year journey to Mercury, to explore one of the Solar System’s most enigmatic planets.

Set for launch in 2018, BepiColombo will be the European Space Agency’s (ESA) first mission to the closest rock to the Sun.

The craft has an unusual design, comprising a “stacked aircraft” carrying two orbiters -- one European, the other Japanese -- which will separate

on arrival to go into different, but complementary orbits around Mercury.

BepiColombo aims to “follow

up on many of the intriguing results of NASA’s Messenger mission, probing deeper into Mercury’s mysteries than ever

before,” the ESA said. The joint project with the

Japanese agency JAXA, which has cost more than 1.3 billion euros ($1.48 billion), involves some 33 companies from 12 EU nations, as well as firms from the US and Japan.

It has been delayed several times, but the mission chiefs are now confident that it is on track to launch in October next year.

Mercury is the “most peculiar of all rocky planets,” Alvaro Gimenez, ESA’s director of science told reporters at the agency’s centre in the Dutch coastal town of Noordwijk.

Japan, EU trade deal challenge to TrumpBrussels

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and top EU

officials agreed yesterday to the broad outline of a landmark trade deal, presented as a direct challenge to the protectionism championed by US President Donald Trump.

The breakthrough capped four years of talks and came on the eve of a G20 meeting in Germany at which Trump is expected to defend his “America First” stance on world trade.

“Today we agreed in principle on an Economic Partnership Agreement (with

Japan), the impact of which goes far beyond our shores,” European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker said at a joint press conference with Abe and EU President Donald Tusk in Brussels.

The EU and Japanese economies combined account for more than a quarter of

global output, making the deal one of the biggest trade pacts ever.

“We were able to demonstrate a strong political will so that the EU and Japan take the lead on free trade,” Abe said just hours before he was due to meet Trump at the G20 in Hamburg. (AFP)

Model Blac Chyna’s attorney is looking at what legal action can be taken against reality TV star Rob Kardashian after he allegedly

posted explicit photos of his ex-fiancee on social media.

“I am exploring all legal remedies and protections available to my client at this time in attempts to best advise her on how she may want to proceed,” Walter Mosley said in a statement to people.com on Wednesday.

Early Wednesday morning, Rob, 30, took to Instagram to blast Chyna in a series of graphic and expletive-ridden posts, which have since been taken down.

Chyna responded to the messages in a since-deleted Snapchat post, alleging that Rob hit her.

Neither Rob nor Chyna have commented regarding the allegation. (IANS)

Actress Julia Stiles said Twitter is gross because people like US President Donald Trump are active

on the micro-blogging site.The 36-year-old actress said

while she once thought the social media platform had a positive side by making people condense their thoughts, she now has an aversion to using the site.

“I’ve had an aversion to Twitter because of Donald

Trump, I’ve found it so gross because of him. I once thought there was a positive side to having people be succinct, and reduce what they wanted to say to 140 characters, but now it feels like it’s shrivelling ideas,” Stiles said.

Instead of using her phone to keep up to date on Twitter, the ‘Riviera’ star said she instead uses language learning app. (TOI)

Singer Celine Dion goes for a lot of fitting sessions before she zeroes on one outfit.

The “My heart will go on” singer has been working with stylist Law Roach for the last year,

but he insists they never plan the specific looks he creates for her as everything they do is organic, reports

femalefirst.co.uk.“It’s really organic with us. Nothing’s really planned out. We have fittings,

lots of fittings, because we both enjoy it. She enjoys it a lot, and we just kind of live in the moment,” Roach told WWD magazine.

Roach is keen that the 49-year-old promotes more up-and-coming designers in the future.

“I would love to introduce her to more of the Council of Fashion

Designers of America, (CFDA) designers. There’s a lot of new

talent that I think is very important to

help nurture and to support,”

Roach said. (IANS)

Actor Gerard Butler, 47, reportedly got rejected by a young woman he met at a restaurant here due to his age.

She felt he was way too old for her, reported aceshowbiz.com.

“Gerard tried to make a move on a gorgeous 20-something, but he was quickly shot down,” a source told Life & Style magazine.

“The young woman then turned to her friends and said, ‘Eww, that guy was old enough to be my grandpa. His buddies teased Gerard mercilessly and suggested he may need to change up his strategy,” the source added.

However, Butler has now rekindled his relationship with his former girlfriend Morgan Brown. The couple was spotted spending time together at a beach in Mexico over the weekend. (IANS)

EXPLORATIONS, ENCOUNTERS AND REMEMBERED STORIES: 200 YEARS OF BRITISH-BAHRAINI RELATIONS

Date : Till 31 August 2017Venue : Bahrain National Museum

The rise of piracy in the Arabian Sea in the 18th and 19th cen-turies resulted in a time of unrest that challenged prosperity and regional trade enterprise. In 1816, a friendly agreement between the British repre-sentatives in the Gulf and the Sheikhs of Bahrain secured the protection of shared interests. The agreement was formalised in 1820 with the signing of a General Treaty of Peace, that ushered a new episode in the political and cul-tural history of both nations. Over the past 200 years, the nature of the British-Bahraini relationship has evolved and the ties between the two nations were strengthened. Above all, this relation-ship was shaped by varied explorations, encounters and personal stories. This exhibition draws on the first explo-rations of Bahrain and its archaeo-logical landscape. It celebrates a few of those who have played a major role in bringing global attention to Bahrain. By shifting the focus from artefacts to people and their documented encoun-ters with local Bahrainis, we attempt to shed light on different perspectives of the bicentenary long British-Bahraini relationship. The exhibition is organised in col-laboration with the British Council in Bahrain.

Don’t hide. This is your time to come out of the shadows. There’s a spark within that’s urging you to act. Move forward and worry about the consequences later. This isn’t a good time to search every sentence for hidden meaning. People may be careless with their words. Don’t overanalyse them.

This is a terrific day for you. Your mood is good and everything is flowing your way. The fire within is burning hot. You will take the lead role in every production. Romance and love are definitely in the cards for you. Be yourself and remember that it’s OK to laugh at your mistakes. Humility is good for you.

Other people may steal the spotlight from you today, but don’t let it get you down. The key is to learn from the ones who take charge. Have fun and don’t worry about the details. A definite dynamism is helping you transform certain areas of your life that need to change. Get out of the rut you’re in.

It may seem like close loved ones are trying to pick a fight with you today. There may tend to be a “me first” attitude stirring up a pot of trouble. Don’t automatically assume that the other person is wrong. There’s a valuable lesson to be learned in every conflict. Take each disagreement as an opportunity to learn something about yourself.

A close loved one may express displeasure with the way things are. Maybe there’s some tension in the air. Things could get rather explosive. There’s a feeling urging others to act, a certain restlessness that demands that you take action. Unfortunately, this action is likely to meet with opposition if you aren’t careful.

Fire up today, and let your spirit fly. You have a great deal of ammunition that encouraging you to take charge. Let your adventuresome spirit roam wherever it pleases. Communication with loved ones will be clear. You can expect all social encounters to go smoothly. You will be the hit of any party.

Put your reservations aside, and go for the thing your heart desires most. Throw caution to the wind and make it happen. Today’s energy urges you to take charge of your life and conquer new territory. There’s dynamism about the day that could leave you behind unless you latch onto the trend and make it work for you.

There may be tremendous changes in store for you. Connect with something futuristic and far out. There may be some roadblocks in the way. Maybe your heart is impeding your progress. You don’t need another person to fill in any voids in your life. Your confidence is what you need to bolster your self-esteem.

Take charge of your life. The more action you take, the more alive you will feel. Maybe you will decide to have a career on the stage. This is the kind of day when you need more variety than usual. Bright and happy people will catch your eye. Jump on the fast track. You’re ready.

Be bold and aggressive today. Even if this isn’t in your nature, dynamic action can be rewarding on a day like this. People will be delighted to hear from you. Your opinion is precious. You have many insights to offer the group. Your adaptable nature will be tested. You may need to make adjustments in order to match other people’s way of thinking.

Love is on your side today, and all romantic and social situations are favoured. This is the perfect time to take the lead on creative projects or anything requiring a keen eye for beauty. Your mood is apt to be positive and jovial. You can’t go wrong in whatever way you choose to express yourself.

Certain love and romance matters may cause some tension. Inflated egos may get in the way of important communication that needs to take place for harmony between you and your romantic partner. You’re a bit more argumentative than usual. Sparks of disagreement are likely to flare into bonfires if you aren’t careful.

An Indian teenager sent to live with a much older

husband who she married aged just 11 has returned to school after being rescued by her classmates, a children’s charity said yesterday.

The 16-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was married off by her family in the western state of Rajasthan, where child marriage is particularly prevalent

In May, relatives forced her to leave school and go to

a nearby village to live with her husband and his family.

But her classmates tracked her down to her new home, some walking barefoot for miles to reach her.

“They somehow tracked down the house and met the girl who told them that she wanted to continue studies and was not willing to stay with her husband and in-laws,” said Gopal Singh, a teacher with the non-profit Sakhi Bal Niketan which helped the friends unite.

At least two people have been killed and about

20 others are missing in huge floods that are surging through southern Japan, with hundreds of thousands of people ordered or urged to flee.

Unprecedented torrential rain has caused rivers to

burst their banks, sweeping away roads and houses, and destroying schools.

Thousands of soldiers and others were scrambling yesterday to reach people cut off by torrents of swirling water or threatened by landslides, and had rescued 250 people, the government said.

Warsaw

US President Donald Trump pledged his

backing for NATO at the start of a high-stakes visit to Europe yesterday as he warned that the future of the West was at risk.

In key US ally Poland on the first leg of the trip, he also accused Russia of “destabilising” action and warned North Korea it faced “consequences” after an intercontinental ballistic missile test that has alarmed the international community.

On the eve of what is likely

to be a prickly G20 summit, with Trump facing animosity from traditional US allies, he used his keynote address in Warsaw to warn that a lack of collective resolve could doom an alliance that endured through the Cold War.

“The defence of the West ultimately rests not only on means but also on the will of its people to prevail,” he said.

“The fundamental question of our time is whether the West has the will to survive.”

Seeking to ease allies’ concerns about the US commitment to NATO,

Trump endorsed its one-for-all-and-all-for-one mutual defence pact.

“The United States has demonstrated not merely with words, but with it actions, that we stand firmly behind Article Five,” he said, while calling for more defence spending on the eastern side of the Atlantic.

“The transatlantic bond between the United States and Europe is as strong as ever, and maybe in many ways, even stronger,” he added. (AFP)

Ivanka Trump yesterday visited the Warsaw ghetto

memorial, a day after Polish Jews condemned her father, US President Donald Trump, for leaving the monument off his to-do list while in the Polish capital.

The 35-year-old businesswoman and Trump advisor, who converted to Judaism before marrying a grandson of Holocaust survivors, laid flowers with the message “From the United States” at the monument dedicated to the victims of the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

She then recited the Kaddish prayer with Poland’s chief rabbi Michael Schudrich before

touring the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews located next to the memorial.

Ivanka was accompanying her father on his trip to the

Polish capital to meet with regional leaders and deliver a speech at Krasinski Square before continuing on to his first G20 summit in Hamburg.

Indonesian teenage boy weds 73-year-old bride

Flights diverted as potholes bedevil Philippine airport

Lengkiti

A teenage boy has married his 73-year-old lover in a remote village on Indonesia’s Sumatra, officials said, after the

unconventional couple threatened a double suicide if their match was thwarted.

The romance began when septuagenarian Rohaya Binti Kiagus Muhammad Jakfar took care of her neighbour Selamet Riyadi, 15, who was suffering from malaria, the local village chief said.

“Selamet is too young to marry but we married them anyway because he threatened to commit suicide,” village chief Cik Ani, told AFP, adding local officials also wanted them to “avoid the sin of adultery”.

“Since the boy is an underage, we have decided to carry out the marriage privately,” he said.

Riyadi’s father died several years ago and the boy was not properly cared for by his mother, who has remarried, Ani said.

Rohaya has been married twice before, both times to divorcees and has at least one child from the marriages, but this time “she got a virgin,” Ani added.

Manila

Runway potholes forced the Philippines’ main airport to divert several flights yesterday, officials said, in the third

such disruption at the facility in the past year.Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport operations

chief Octavio Lina said the two potholes, both about 30 centimetres (12 inches) wide, were discovered in the morning, making landings by large aircraft too dangerous.

“Even if the holes are small, the plane could land on its belly if the main landing gear hits them,” he told a news conference, adding the runway defect could lead to plane damage.

“We cannnot take that chance. It would be risky and safety would be involved.”

Smaller aircraft were allowed to land on the airport’s shorter, alternate runway mainly used for domestic flights during a three-hour period when the larger airstrip was sealed, he added.

Ten international flights bound for Manila were temporarily diverted to other airports as new asphalt was laid, airport records show. The diversions also delayed numerous other flights, the authorities added.

Duterte vows to eat militantsManila

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has threatened to

eat alive the Islamist militants behind the abduction and beheadings of two Vietnamese sailors in a furious reaction to the killings.

The remains of the two hostages, who were kidnapped along with four other crew members of a Vietnamese

cargo ship in November last year, were recovered off the southern region of Mindanao by Philippine troops on Wednesday.

The military blamed the killings on the notorious kidnap-for-ransom Abu Sayyaf group with a stronghold in the area, and which is known to behead its hostages unless ransom payments are made.

“I will eat your liver if you want me to. Give me salt and vinegar and I will eat it in front of you,” Duterte said in a speech before local officials late Wednesday.

“I eat everything. I am not picky. I eat even what cannot be swallowed.”

Holding up a mobile phone with a photo of the slain Vietnamese sailors, Duterte

angrily cursed the militants. “Will we allow ourselves to

be enslaved by these people? Son of a wh**e.”

“Piece of cake” to wipe out South: NorthSeoul

Pyongyang warned it would be a “piece of cake” to

destroy “gangster” South Korea, state media reported yesterday, as it raged against Seoul for a joint missile drill with the US following its landmark intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test.

The isolated, nuclear-armed North sent a chill through the international community Tuesday after its missile launch, a milestone in Pyongyang’s decades-long drive for the capability to threaten the US mainland with a nuclear strike.

US President Donald Trump had dismissed the idea of the North having a working ICBM, vowing it “won’t happen,” but experts say the missile could reach Alaska or even further towards the continental US.

The test prompted the US and the South to stage a joint missile drill aimed at countering the North’s threats, after South Korean President

Moon Jae-In called for a response beyond “just words”.

North Korea hit back yesterday, with its propaganda National Peace Committee for Korea criticising Moon for denouncing Pyongyang “instead of getting rejoiced over the praiseworthy event” staged

by its northern neighbour, according to the KCNA news agency.

Mocking the South as “puppet military gangsters,” the KCNA report added: “It will be as easy as a piece of cake for the (North) to wipe out the puppet forces ... as we are now

able to destroy even the US mainland across the ocean.”

Left-leaning Moon, who has advocated dialogue with the North to bring it to negotiating table, condemned the launch and joined calls for tighter sanctions on Pyongyang. - AFP

Pizza bytes! Pakistan enchanted by first robot waitressesMultan

Pakistan’s first robot waitresses are serving up

smiles for customers at an upscale pizza restaurant in the ancient city of Multan, better known for its centuries-old Sufi shrines, mango orchards and handicrafts.

Rabia, Annie and Jennie greet customers and bring them their pies at Pizza.com, where owner Osama Jafari -- who built the prototypes himself -- says the response has been a surge of new business.

“We went to a lot of places,

but my uncle said that in this restaurant a robot serves and when the robot served us pizza we felt very happy,” customer

Osama Ahmed, 12, said.“It is an innovation,”

another customer, Hamid Bashir said. “It feels good to

be served like that and it is a good entertainment for the children.”

Jafari said he was inspired by videos of robot waiters in China. The 24-year-old, who studied engineering at Islamabad’s National University of Science and Technology, said he began working on a prototype with the support of his parents.

“The response that we got is actually tremendous. People are loving it. My friends, family members and all the local people here,” he said.

Big win for Sri LankaHambantota

Openers Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka

Gunathilaka hit sublime centuries to help Sri Lanka humble Zimbabwe by eight wickets in the third one-day international in Hambantota yesterday.

Chasing 311 for victory, the hosts rode on a 229-run opening stand between Dickwella (102) and Gunathilaka (116) to canter home in 47.2 overs and earn a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

The left-handed batting duo got their maiden ODI hundreds to overshadow Zimbabwe opener Hamilton Masakadza’s sparkling 111 in the visitors’ 310-8 after being put into bat first.

While wicketkeeper-batsman Dickwella hit 14 boundaries during his stay, Gunathilaka smashed 15 fours and a six to flay the Zimbabwe attack at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium.

“It was a fantastic effort by the boys. After losing the first game, we had our backs against the wall and we came back

well,” Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews said.

“The way Dickwella and Gunathilaka batted, we could have chased 350 on that wicket,” he said of his team that hunted down a 300-plus run target for the first time on home soil.

However, the ICC fined Mathews 20 percent of his match fee for his team’s slow over rate while the rest of the team was slapped with a 10 percent penalty.

ICC match referee Chris Broad imposed the fine after finding the Sri Lankans one over short of its target when the time allowance was take into consideration, the ICC said.

It warned that should there be another infringement in the next 12 months under Mathews’ captaincy, he will face a suspension.

Off-spinner Malcolm Waller got Dickwella trudging back to the pavilion and left-arm orthodox Sean Williams cleaned up Gunathilaka, who received the man of the match award, in an otherwise disappointing show by the Zimbabwe bowlers.

Upul Tharanga (44) and Kusal Mendis (28) then steered the team home with an unbeaten 75-run stand as the batting duo survived a dropped catch each as fielding lapses also hurt the visitors.

“The bowlers came back pretty well after the start that they (Zimbabwe) got.

Hamilton played brilliantly, credit should go to him as well but the bowlers did well to keep them to 310,” said Mathews.

Mathews also praised Tharanga, who is unbeaten in the series so far, for being “an absolute team man” after he once again dropped down the order to allow Dickwella and

Gunathilaka to open the innings.

Earlier Masakadza put on a crucial 127-run partnership for the second wicket with Tarisai Musakanda (48) before Sri Lankan bowlers struck back to check Zimbabwe’s surge.

Masakadza’s 98-ball knock, laced with 15 fours and a six, had Zimbabwe eyeing 350-plus at one point before a middle-order collapse pulled them back.

Teenage leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who took a hat-trick on his ODI debut in the second match in Galle, and paceman Asela Gunaratne grabbed two wickets each.

Sean Williams contributed with a gutsy 43 while cameos from wicketkeeper-batsman Peter Moor (24) and Sikandar Raza (25 not out) helped Zimbabwe cross the 300-run mark.

“We need to get runs on

the board batting first, but 310 was enough, we just need to get better with the field... Our bowling was probably under par (as well),” Zimbabwe skipper Graeme Cremer said.

The action now shifts to the fourth ODI on Saturday at the same venue. (AFP)

Advanced Recovery and Regeneration seminar heldDT News NetworkManama

International instructor Nicolas Berryman has

highlighted the importance of recovery in order to optimise an athletes’ performance during training and official competition.

This was revealed at the first-of- its-kind seminar on Advanced Recovery and Regeneration, organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee’s (BOC) Sports Training and Development Centre (STDC)

on Wednesday at the National Stadium’s Conference Hall in Riffa. This seminar saw 110 sports clubs and federations representatives, who were also warned of an intensive training programme, resulting in a performance decline and sport injuries. It was also attended by top officials from the BOC, including general secretary Abdulrahman Askar and Sports Federations director Hesham Al Beloshi, in addition to University of Bahrain Physical Education

and physiotherapy dean Dr Sadeq Al Alawi and other sports authorities’ personnel.

Berryman also focused on subjects related to training principles and observation,

as well as strength training, recovery strategies and training in hot weather.

“Training affects the vital functional organs of the body and consumes its energy when there is an excessive training load. Therefore, there must be a recovery period in order for the body to come back to a normal state,” said the Bishop’s University instructor.

“Most athletes around the world are unprofessional and suffer from work pressures and family responsibilities,

which must be taken into consideration. Sometimes little effort gives better results, so there should be a standardized training load. Heavy training leads to a decline in performance and exposure to injuries”. He said recovery, sleeping and nutrition are the most important factors that affect the development of the athlete’s performance, and not only the quality of training, noting the importance of focusing on other mental and social factors.

Racing red to fly at Challenge RothDT News NetworkManama

The racing red will fly this weekend at Challenge

Roth in Germany with Daniela Ryf returning to defend her crown and Terenzo Bozzone making his first appearance at the legendary race.

While the Swiss speedster admits her lead-up to this race has not been ideal due to a back injury, she is looking forward to experiencing the hearty support along the race course.

“The bike course is amazing, the atmosphere on every hill is just breathtaking,” Daniela Ryf said. But what she is really looking forward

to is finishing. “The most fun of the race

I enjoyed last year was the finish line and hope I can do another Bird Shuffle and

dance along the finish line. With the preparation I’m not sure I’ll have enough energy. I’ll be happy to have enough energy to cross the finish line

and get there as fast as I can, but I hope I can enjoy it a bit like I did last year,” Ryf added.

Bozzone has been racing full-distance triathlons for years, but this will be his maiden race in Roth.

“I am so excited. So many athletes I know have had the opportunity to race here, and I am glad I’ve been able to work it into my race schedule this year,” Bozzone said.

The Kiwi has also seen his share of physical setbacks, with a bone bruise in his heel forcing him to take three weeks away from running.

“While this was really frustrating, I used the time to focus on my riding,” he added.

Colourful US star Bethanie Mattek-Sands suffered

an horrific knee injury at Wimbledon yesterday which left her screaming in pain, pleading for help and officials accused of freezing in her desperate moment of need.

The distressing drama on Court 17, where the 32-year-

old lay stricken for at least 20 minutes,

pushed the title campaigns of Novak Djokovic

and Roger F e d e r e r onto the sidelines.

“Please h e l p me! Please! Please!” screamed Mattek-Sands as she clutched her right knee after collapsing running to the net in the first point of the deciding set of her second round match against Romania’s Sorana Cirstea.

The women’s tour said Mattek-Sands had suffered an “acute knee injury” and had been taken to hospital.

Cirstea questioned why it took so long for the medical team to arrive at Court 17 which is right next door to the tournament’s famed Centre Court.

“She was in shock. Her knee was in a very weird position. I’ve never seen

anything like this except in the movies,” said Cirstea.

“And, yeah, I panicked a little bit, as well. I called for help, but no one was coming.

“Everyone froze and I screamed something to the chair umpire. Bethanie was saying ‘Sorana, please help me.’ But I felt useless. I wished I could have done more.

“It felt forever for help to come. It was me, her husband Justin and my physio. I don’t know for h o w long she w a s on the ground, but I w o u l d say 10,

defended their response, claiming: “The first response to Court 17 was within one minute, by a qualified ambulance technician.

In a statement, they added: “The player was kept on court while pain relief was given.

“The player was then transferred directly to an ambulance and taken under emergency conditions to a hospital.”

Meanwhile, Djokovic shrugged off sweltering 30-degree heat to breeze past outclassed Adam Pavlasek 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 to reach the third round.

Third seed Federer continued his campaign for a record eighth Wimbledon title by seeing off world number 79 Dusan Lajovic 7-6 (7/0), 6-3, 6-2 to reach the third round for the 15th time.

“I struggled at the start and couldn’t find my rhythm,” said Federer, who dropped his first service game to trail 2-0 to his 79th-ranked opponent.

“But once I got rid of the nerves I played some inspired stuff.”

The women’s event was thrown wide open when third seed Karolina Pliskova crashed to defeat against world number 108 Magdalena Rybarikova.

Rybarikova won 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 on Centre Court, earning the Slovakian a last 32 clash with Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko.

Bahrain Merida riders cruise

Three of Bahrain’s Merida Pro Cycling team riders

enjoyed good results yesterday after completing the sixth stage of the 104th Tour de France over 216km on a flat course between Vesoul and the city of Troyes.

The stage winner was Germany’s Marcel Kittel of the Quick-Step Floors team who completed the distance in five hours five minutes and 34 seconds, as did 120 riders overall of the 193 still in the race, including Bahrain’s Borut Bozic (23rd, Slovenia), Janez Brajkovic

(73rd,Slovenia) and Sonny Colbrelli (84th, Italy).

The other five Bahrain riders classified were - Yukiya Arashiro (131st, Japan, +0:52

seconds off the lead), Ondrej Cink (132nd, Czech Republic, +0:52), Tsgabu Grmay (157th, Ethiopia, +1:22), Grega Bole (168th, Slovenia, +2:13) and Javier Moreno (173rd, Spain, 2:26).

Bahrain’s ninth team member Spaniard Ion Izaguirre retired during the opening stage in Dusseldorf, Germany after suffering a lumbar fracture of the lower spine.

The tour began with 22 teams comprising 198 riders racing 21 stages over 3,540km in varying terrains such as flat courses, hills and the mountains, with the final stage on 23 July covering 103km over a flat course from

Montgeron to the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Today, the seventh stage takes the remaining (193) riders from Troys to Nuits-Saint Georges in the wine country region over 213.5km on a relatively flat course.

Froome admits to being scared of parasol

Troyes

Chris Froome admitted he’d had the jitters when

an out-of-control parasol blew in front of the peloton.

Race leader and reigning champion Froome was one of several riders forced to swerve to avoid the parasol, as it rumbled across the road.

“It did just pop up from nowhere, there was a little gust of wind at that point so I think it blew over from one of the spectators on the side of the road,” said Briton Froome, 32.

“It landed right in the middle of the road -- it’s quite scary when that happens. One minute you’re cruising along and the next there’s a massive parasol in front of you and everyone’s dodging to avoid it!”

For many observers, yesterday’s 216km flat stage from Vesoul to Troyes was dull.

A three-man breakaway that was doomed from the start took off inside the first kilometre but was never

allowed to get even four minutes up the road.

The sprinters’ teams controlled the tempo of the peloton and easily caught the break, although not until 3km from the finish.

But Froome said he’d enjoyed the day in scorching temperatures.

“I’m not complaining, I actually quite enjoy these long days, being a bit more relaxed and getting to chat a little more in the peloton and speak to guys you don’t normally speak to,” he said.

“You get to take in the scenery a bit more. The atmosphere on the roads has been great and the French public has been great.”

The true battle for the yellow jersey will take place in the mountains, like Wednesday’s first summit finish to La Planche des Belles Filles, won by Italian Fabio Aru but in which Froome finished third and took the leader’s jersey off his Sky team-mate Geraint Thomas. (AFP)

Thursday July 6 Cavendish calls for abuse stopVesoul

Mark Cavendish has pleaded with

social media users to stop abusing him over the disqualification of Peter Sagan from the Tour de France.

Sagan was kicked out after his elbow sent Cavendish crashing into metal safety barriers and down to the tarmac in Tuesday’s sprint finish to the Tour’s fourth stage.

Cavendish, 32, suffered a broken shoulder blade in the incident and had to

pull out of the Tour, but he revealed in a video posted on Twitter that he has since been subjected to the ire of some social media users.

“Please know that it’s sport and I have a family,” he said.“Everyone is entitled to their opinions.

But vile and threatening comments on social media to myself and my family aren’t deserved.”

Cavendish said he was paying now for the “petulant” attitude he had as a younger rider.

“Unfortunately this will never leave me,” he added.

“But I’d ask you all to respect that and please not send threatening or abusive language to myself and my family.” He also praised Sagan for both coming to see him after the incident on Tuesday. (AFP)

Marcel Kittel won his second stage of this year’s

Tour de France yesterday, sprinting to victory in the sixth stage before again breaking down in tears.

The burly German, who now has 11 Tour stage wins in total,

had also won the second stage on Sunday, before the tears started to flow that time as well.

Frenchman Arnaud Demare was second with Andre Greipel

of Germany third on the 216km sixth stage as reigning

champion Chris Froome retained his race lead.

But unlike the previous two stages that

ended in bunch sprints, this time there was no crash.

As the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected an appeal by world champion Peter Sagan against his disqualification for elbowing Mark Cavendish into

the metal safety railings, and out of the Tour, on Tuesday, this dash to the line thankfully passed off without incident.

And Kittel, as he had done on Sunday, proved too strong for his rivals, reaching a maximum speed of 71.17kph at one stage, according to official Tour data, as he surged from well down the field to breeze past all challengers and win.

“I took the right wheel and then attacked with 250 metres to go,” explained Kittel.

“I knew in finale if I had good legs, in the final kilometre I would be able to find a gap, and I found it with 250 metres left.”

That show of force suggested Kittel, 29, is back to form he showed in 2013 and 2014 when he won four Tour stages in each year.

His victory took him level on stage wins with compatriot Greipel and only one behind the German record of 12 taken by Erik Zabel, who won six consecutive green jerseys from 1996-2001 -- itself a record.

After Wednesday’s fireworks on the climb to La Planche des Belles Filles, the overall race favourites had a quiet day in the saddle, with Geraint Thomas remaining second at 12sec from his British compatriot and Sky team leader Froome, with stage five winner Fabio Aru third at 14sec.

In fact the biggest drama they had was earlier in the day when a parasol blew across the road right in front of the peloton, causing several riders to take evasive action, although fortunately they were not going full throttle at that point.(AFP)
