into the regional planning
Integrating Global Environmental Issues into Bulgaria’s Regional Development Process Project
Indicators 1 & 2: correlation between forest agriculture and urban territories
• Status: available• Definition: represents the ratio between
anthropogenically loaded, forest and agriculture territories and total surface of a territorial unit
• Geographical coverage: pan-European• Temporal coverage: after 1990• Update frequency: 5-10 years for CORINE terrestrial
coverage; when changes occur – data from Agency for Geodesy, Cartography and Cadastre
• Data sources: EEA; Agency for Geodesy, Cartography and Cadastre

Integrating Global Environmental Issues into Bulgaria’s Regional Development Process Project
Objectives of the research
• Indicators selection• Information model and architecture• Complete technical specification of
GIS applications for analysis• Specification of base software and
hardware• Financial requirements evaluation
Integrating Global Environmental Issues into Bulgaria’s Regional Development Process Project
Indicators selection
• Relative proportion of anthropogenically loaded territories
• Greenhouse gas emissions per capita
• LTA Expenses with environmental use
• LTA Expenses with environmental use per capita
Integrating Global Environmental Issues into Bulgaria’s Regional Development Process Project
Functional analysis
• Existing base software
• Basic GIS software licenses
• Personnel qualifications for GIS operation
• Available GIS layers for the state surface
• Use of updated geographical and statistical information
Integrating Global Environmental Issues into Bulgaria’s Regional Development Process Project
General requirements for GIS applications
• Compatibility – to avoid purchase of additional software
• Data transfer • Official registries and ledgers• Input • Output: thematic maps, tables and diagrams
additional information documentation and training
• Application language – Bulgarian
Integrating Global Environmental Issues into Bulgaria’s Regional Development Process Project
GIS Information
• Administrative layers – MRDPW (actualization)
• Corine Land Cover 2006
• Means for long-term use – part of the country
Integrating Global Environmental Issues into Bulgaria’s Regional Development Process Project
Statistical information
• Gas emissions – NSI
• Gas emissions – EEA
• Demographical statistics (NSI)
• Expenses for preservation and restoration of the environment (NSI)
Integrating Global Environmental Issues into Bulgaria’s Regional Development Process Project
GIS passport: Relative part of anthropogenically loaded territories
(infrastructure, settlements, industrial units)
• Data: Corine, AGGK, administrative layers• Method: GIS analysis on data layers for type of
territories and administrative boarders• Result: Section by administrative boarders and
territory types• Output – thematic maps, tables and diagrams• Territorial level: all• Problems: Corine Data – per 5 years, AGGK–
part of the territory

GIS passport : Greenhouse gas emmisions (CO2 equivalent) per capita
• Data: NSI, EEA, administrative layers• Method: Equalization of the each greenhouse
gas to CO2 equivalent• Result: Calculated CO2 equivalent by
administrative levels• Output – thematic maps, tables and diagrams• Territorial level : all• Problems: Different methodologies of NSI and
EEA
Integrating Global Environmental Issues into Bulgaria’s Regional Development Process Project
GIS Passport: LTA Expenses with environmental purpose (LTA Expenses with
environmental purpose per capita)
• Data: NSI, MRDPW, administrative layers• Method:
– First indicator – no processing– Second indicator – LTA expenses / population
• Result: Table with values of LTA expenses and LTA expenses per capita
• Output – thematic maps, tables and diagrams• Territorial level : district, planning region,
country• Problems: Incomplete data from NSI
