MANZANAR PLAQUE

The brbnze plaque at Manzanar has been duly dedicated and mounted to quiet the s\urmish waged be· tween 'ikkei and some state officials. But it is not the lot of ?llanzanar for the dust of any skll'mish to selUe as Gardena Valley pundit publicly has questioned lhe tex t of the plaqu e because she remains unrepent<lnl in her views aboul Evacuation,

The immediate and r al\' reaction 0( the English section editors of the two local Japanese vernaculru'S (reprinted this week with the offending opinion) per· mi ts us to live by the old rule- never argue witb a woman. Both were explici t in pre ss in~ home the (un· dament<ll issue- that Evacuation deOled due process of Jaw and therefore unconstitutional, the Koremalsu Case notlvi ttJs landing.

Because this nation was at war and the Prlsldent as commander-in·chief had exercised his military powers in signing Executive Order 9066, tbe Supreme Court validated the sorriest segment of U.S. history. Antl·Japanese racism was blatant (or only aHens and many more native·born Americans of Japanese an· cestry from the West Coast were det<lined in inland. desert camps like Manzanar- [hough tbe mainstream of Japanese then in Hawaii were not incarcerated be· cause o( logistics involved in interning about half of the Island population, Similarly, other Amencans whose ancestors hailed from the Axis nations were not hauled in to concentration camps.

Evacuation, as American Indians are pam fully aware, was not new in 1942 for theIr ancestors had been evicted and forced·march (rom their traditional lands to reservations a century earlier. Figh ting back only decunated tbeir ranks.

The plaque at l\Ianzanar, monument there and at Rohwer. Ark .. are but mature and honest remmders of an unchaste, Infamous remnant of World War IL They also ymboJize how fragile our civil li berties.
