OLD TESTAMENT READING Deuteronomy 30:15-20 15 “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. 16 If you obey the

you are entering to take possession of it. 17 But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you to-day, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess. 19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, 20 loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE LESSON 1 Corinthians 3:1-9 1But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh,

as infants in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, 3 for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jeal-ousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not being merely human?

5 What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So nei-ther he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. 9 For we are God's fellow workers. You are God's field, God's building.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 5:21-37

Pastor: A reading of the Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew. People: Glory to You, O Lord. (sung)

[Jesus said:] 21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not mur-der; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.

3

23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be recon-ciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of di-vorce.’ 32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

Pastor: This is the Gospel of our Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ! (sung)

If you are communing with us today, please take a moment to reflect upon our scriptural understanding of the Lord’s Supper, found on the inside front cover. If you choose not to receive communion today, we invite you to: · come forward to receive a blessing, · or you may remain seated and join in singing the hymns and songs, · or simply use this opportunity as a time of prayer and connection to God.

We pray: Gracious Father in Heaven, be near me, guide me, and equip me in your love and grace. May this time of worship remind me of the sacrifice of your Son, the Savior of the world, and His victory over death and the grave. Enable me through the power of Your Spirit to depart in Your peace and live according to Your will. This I ask in the name of Jesus. Amen!

About our communion procedure at the 8:00 service:

Approach the altar from the center aisle, and gather around beginning with the front center rail.

Once all are at the table, we kneel together at the same time.

Hold out your hands to receive the bread from the pastor.

If you receive an individual cup of wine, keep the empty cup in plain view.

The common cup is offered second by the pastor.

Pastor dismisses each table with a blessing. Return to pews via the side aisles.

Those who have difficulty walking may indicate so to an usher,

and Holy Communion will be brought to those persons individually.

LOOKING AHEAD:

LWML news-- Save the Date! KOG ladies, please save these dates and plan

to attend--- April 5th is the Tidewater Zone spring rally to be held at

Redeemer Lutheran Church in Portsmouth, VA. April 27th will be the King

of Glory afternoon tea, with Jon Diefenthaler presenting a program on the

church's malaria project. More information will follow as we approach

these dates.

Estimate of Giving: Please be encouraged to return your estimate of giving form. You may place it in the offering plate. Additional estimate of giving forms can be obtained through the website: www.kogva.org.

Some have asked, how do you determine what to give? The Biblical principle is the "tithe." That is setting a portion of your first fruits to give to the Lord. Percentage giving makes it easy to know what to give. No matter your income a percentage is set aside to the Lord. Some start with 1%, others 5%, some 10%, and some even more. May the Lord bless you with discernment in this time. Thank you! 2014 Estimate of Giving: Thank you for your 2014 Estimate of Giving. Giving for the 2014 year has begun and you may begin giving toward that estimate today. Additional forms are

available at www.kogva.org. Mission Dedicated Fund: As part of our stewardship emphasis, we ask that you also consider a gift

to the Mission Dedicated Fund. This fund supports mission work beyond our walls at King of Glory. If every giving unit was able to give at least $150.00 this year, we would reach our goal of $30,000. Your gift supports vital projects that feed the poor, help the homeless, and spread the Gospel. Please fill out the section on the Estimate of Giving Form and place it in the offering plate or the box in the back of the sanctuary.

Direct Thrivent Choice Dollars by March 31 Per a December 31, 2013 Choice Dollars Summary Report, only 14 KOG Thrivent

members out of 45 eligible directed their choice dollars last year. If you are an eligible member of designated Choice Dollars and have not already done so, be sure to direct your designation by March 31, 2014. After that date, any undirected Choice Dollars will expire. Please do not miss this opportunity to help support “King of Glory Lutheran Church” or “King of Glory Lutheran Preschool.” Go to Thrivent.com/thriventchoice and use search criteria: King; Williamsburg; VA to make your selection or call 800-847-4836 and state “Thrivent Choice.” Thank you for your continued support by designating your Thrivent Choice Dollars.

Neighborhood Initiative Neighborhood Church King of Glory 2014

Overview

In response to the call of our Lord to love our neighbor as ourselves and the encouragement of our District to engage our neighbors, King of Glory has launched an initiative to establish itself as a neighborhood church. King of Glory has had a rich history of making itself available to the neighborhood and community at large. From the moment a building was going to be built, it was the heart of the congregation to have the community come to us and use our facility. That continues to be a strong aspect of our ministry today. Yet being neighborly is not only waiting for people to come to us but also us going to the people. This process starts simply with establishing connections, relationships, and communication with those around us. It should be the KOG community that takes the initiative to meet our neighbors, tells them we care about them, and provides a path for a relationship to develop.

Vision

To be known by the people in our neighborhood as a community that is approachable and cares for people as we strive to connect, grow, and live.

Staff Initiatives 2014 Over the next five months, the Directors of the congregation will reach out to the community by scheduling visits to introduce or revisit with leaders in the community. At those meetings we will share a professionally developed card with information about who King of Glory is, what we strive to do, and ways we can care for those we are visiting.

Senior Pastor of Connections: County Executive, Police Chief, Fire Chief, General Manager of Timeshares (across the street), General Manager of apartment complex (across the street)

Associate Pastor-Williamsburg: Mission Partners in the Community, Hospital Chaplains and Administrators

Associate Pastor-New Kent: County Executive, Police Chief, Fire Chief, Store Managers in complex in front of building

Children and Family Minister: School Principals, Coffee Houses, Youth Ministers in Town

Director of the School: Pediatric Offices, Bright Beginnings, DJ Elementary School A staff luncheon has been scheduled by KOG staff between KOG staff and the staff at Wellspring Methodist Church (our next-door neighbor). As Christian communities of faith, it is vital that we celebrate and witness what binds us together through the power and love of Jesus. Lunch is a good way to begin the conversation.

11

Neighborhood Initiative, continued Neighborhood Church King of Glory 2014

Congregational Initiatives for 2014 Sermon Series: February-June our Sunday themes will revolve around what the Bible teaches about being neighborly. At the end of each series, the congregation will be given an initiative to use in their neighborhoods. Book Discussion: Get Off Your Donkey: Help Somebody and Help Yourself by Reggie McNeal. Neighborhood Open Houses: Members of the church who live within a one-mile radius of the congregation will be selected and asked to host an open house in their homes (or neighborhoods). The church will provide resources for the host family. The purpose of the open house is to fellowship with our neighbors and provide an opportunity to share an information card with information about who King of Glory is, what we strive to do, and ways we can care for those we are visiting. Members who live outside the one-mile radius may also host an open house if they desire.

Thanks of the Week

Mission of the Month: February From His Hands

The From His Hands ministry at King of Glory is a ministry of people who gather together and cook meals for the working poor and the homeless in our community as we meet people where they are. This is what God has called us to do: to go to the broken and the downtrodden and to show them love. Through this ministry we have the opportunity to do just that—we encourage our neighbors and show them the love of Jesus. If you are interested in helping in any way—whether it be cooking food, delivering food, or coordinating—we would love to have you. Please contact Pastor Hengst or Bo Wingate for more

information.

The Apprentice How do you live as a Disciple of Jesus? What are others in the church and outside the church doing?

This is a new forum through which ideas can be shared and everyone can grow. Here is how it will work.

A question will be posed every two weeks. You can share your practice or thoughts (anonymously) by

sending the information to [email protected]. We will then share it here and together grow and

learn.

This Week’s Question These are real questions asked of real people of faith

How do you pray at home?

Submitted by a Family at King of Glory

Prayer time is special for our children. We pray with each of them individually. This provides one-on-one

time and an opportunity to pray. We always leave an opportunity for our children to add to the prayer.

One of my favorite prayers is from Thomas Cramner's "Collect for Purity," the opening prayer in the

Communion service from The Book of Common Prayer (1928):

"Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid;

Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee,

and worthily magnify thy holy Name, through Christ our Lord. Amen!" I personalize it by substituting 'my

heart' for 'our hearts’ and 'I' for 'we'.

At dinnertime we take time to pray with each other and our family. When our children were smaller we

would rotate letting each of them say the dinner prayer. We let them say and pray for whatever they

wanted. It was beautiful to hear what was on their mind and what they wanted to share with God.

My daily practice uses a subscription to the "Encounter with God," which is issued by the Scripture Un-

ion, Valley Forge, PA. This publication is a guide for meeting God daily in His Word. Each issuance cov-

ers daily devotionals for three months. Each daily devotional begins with prayer followed by the Scrip-

ture reading for the day. Then one is asked to meditate on that reading with a brief guide. Then one is

asked to apply the reading. Finally, the devotional ends with a closing prayer. Each daily session is con-

fined to one page.

I have found this daily devotional a blessing. I use the devotional each morning to begin each day be-

fore daily distractions get in the way.
