Continuing extracts from ‘My Spiritual Autobiography’ by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, 2009. Personal Reflections, Teachings and Talks collected by Sofia Stril-Rever, Translated by Charlotte Mandell.

I was born on the fifth day of the fifth month . . .

I WAS BORN on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Wood Pig year according to the Tibetan calendar, or July 6, 1935, in the Western calendar. I was given the name Lhamo Thondup, which means, literally, “Goddess who accomplishes all wishes.” Tibetan names for people, places, and things often sound picturesque when they’re translated. Tsangpo, for instance, the name of one of the largest rivers in Tibet—which in India becomes the powerful Brahmaputra—means “the Purifier.”

The name of my village is Takster, or “Roaring Tiger.” When I was a child, it was a poor little commune, built on a hill overlooking a wide valley. The grazing land was used not by farmers but by nomads, because of the unpredictable weather in the region. When I was little, my family, along with about twenty others, earned a meager living from this land. Takster is situated in the extreme northeastern part of the country, in the province of Amdo. The house where I was born was typical of that part of Tibet—built of stone and earth, with a flat roof. The gutters, made from juniper branches hollowed out to channel rainwater, were the only unusual element of its architecture. Right in front of the house, between its two “arms” or wings, was a little courtyard with, in the center, a tall pole to which a flag printed with many prayers was attached. Animals were housed behind the house, which had six rooms: the kitchen, where we spent most of our time during the winter; the shrine room with a little altar, where we all gathered for the morning offerings; my parents’ bedroom; a guest room; a storage room for our provisions; and finally, a stable for the animals.

Children didn’t have a room of their own. As a baby, I slept with my mother, and then in the kitchen, near the stove. We had neither chairs nor beds, properly speaking, but there were raised wooden platforms to sleep on in my parents’ room and in the guest bedroom. We also had a few wooden hutches, painted in bright colors.

To be continued.

Teaching Nagarjuna's “Letter to King Satvahana”

Nagarjuna (1st - 2nd century A.D.) wrote his celebrated poem Letter to a Friend as a letter of advice to his friend King Gautamiputra/Satavahana.

This advice gives a concise and comprehensive introduction to the entire path and practice of Buddhism. It guides both householders and the ordained onto the path leading to liberation and enlightenment. The instructions are of special interest to those who wish to take up spiritual activity while continuing to live and work in society; they are meant

to convey the whole meaning of the Dharma to the ordinary person in a language and style that are easy to understand.

Despite its short length (only 123 verses), it covers the whole Mahayana path with unusual clarity and memorable imagery; thus it is widely quoted by Tibet's great masters and scholars in the many commentaries they have written on the Buddhist path.

Commentary On Six Session Yoga(Highest Yoga Initiates Only)

The Six Session Guru Yoga prayer is a daily commitment for Highest Yoga Tantra initiates (e.g., Guhyasamaja, Chakrasamvara, Yamantaka, and others). It is a beautiful, moving practice that helps us recollect our bodhisattva and tantric vows including the pledges to the Five Buddha Families and Fifty Verses of Guru Devotion.

Guru devotion — viewing the spiritual teacher as the Buddha is a core Buddhist practice. By chanting the Six Session Guru prayer, we make offerings of speech as well as visualised offerings to the guru. We seek his blessings so we may become Enlightened for the benefit of all sentient beings. Through their boundless compassion, Buddhas intentionally take birth in the Desire Realm in a way that we can see them. As our teachers, they teach us the holy Dharma and offer us knowledge, inspiration and blessings. They give us opportunities to practice generosity, patience and morality in the best possible way.

The King of Prayers... Continued from last newsletter

Merely by giving voice to these aspirationsOf the sublime goals of a bodhisattva

The effects can only be known by an omniscient Buddha

Therefore doubt not that it leads to enlightenment.

In order to follow the excellent examples setBy the wisdom of the bodhisattva Manjushri

And the always-sublime Samantabhadra All virtues I dedicate to their peerless ideals

All conquerors passed into the three timesHave praised as supreme this peerless dedication Therefore I also surrender all roots of my activities

To the sublime goals of a bodhisattva.

Calm Abiding Day retreat

Sunday 4th September

If one tries to meditate and doesn’t know how, then various thoughts arise and one reacts to them delusively. When thoughts arise, it’s important not to stop and not to follow after them but to apply the two kinds of awareness, which are being aware of thoughts that arise and returning to the referential object of one’s practice. In short, calm abiding meditation practice is placing one’s mind on an object, noticing thoughts that arise, and returning to the referential object one chose for one’s practice without suppressing or chasing after thoughts. As one progresses, less and less thoughts will arise. Eventually, an advanced practitioner can naturally focus his or her attention on any object without difficulties. The concentrative awareness one develops through this practice becomes a part of one’s life and then one is able to be attentive at all times. As it is, one is very distracted, but by developing and cultivating both kinds of awareness through engaging in calm abiding practice again and again and regularly, one is more conscientious during all activities. The result of practice is called “mental subtleness” or “control.”

Time: 9.00am - 4.00pmCost: $35members / $45non-members, includes vegetarian lunch. Bookings essential: Please contact Alison on 93375845 or email [email protected] to register for the retreat

The First Turning of the Wheel of Dharma Droogpa-Tseshi

This special day commemorates the Buddha’s first teachings which occurred in Deer Park at Sarnath where he taught the five ascetics who became his first disciples. The collective teachings of the Buddha are classified into three phases or three turnings of the wheel of dharma. In the first turning Buddha taught the Four Noble Truths, in the second turning he taught on emptiness and compassion and in the third turning he taught on Buddha nature. The eight spoked dharma wheel is one of the eight auspicious symbols of Tibetan Buddhism.

The symbolism of the wheel

• The circular shape represents the perfection of the Dharma teachings.

• The hub symbolises moral discipline, which is the essential core of meditation practice.

• The eight spokes of the wheel represent the Noble Eightfold Path and have sharp edges to cut through ignorance.

• The rim represents mindfulness, which holds everything together.
