HISTORY OLD TIMERS REUNION COLLECTION Chaco Culture National Historical Park held an old timers' reunion at the Park from October 5th through October 7th, 1990. The reunion was to "honor all personnel involved with Chaco Canyon National Monument during the last sixty years such as ruins stabilization crews, maintenance employees, archaeologists, traders, Civilian Conservation Corp., and National Park Service personnel." One of the activities which took place at the reunion was the Chaco Canyon Old Timers Reunion Oral History Project. The goal of the Project was to record old timers' recollections of Chaco Canyon in the "early" days. The project was adversely affected by a last minute change in the program agenda, as well as inclement weather and unfavorable site conditions. The Reunion staff also handled the duplication of slides and photographs from the 1950s, in particular the Charles Wyatt slide collection, and the Marjorie Mirabel and Evon Z Vogt photograph collection. These items were on temporary loan to Chaco Canyon National Park during the reunion, and some of the materials were later donated to the park on a permanent basis.

The slides were loaned to the park for duplication by Mr. Wyatt for the Old Timers reunion in 1990. His widow donated the slides after his death. She donated the material to the park during the Chaco Old Timer's Reunion in October, 1990. There are [these numbers are wrong- there are 63 photos, inlcuding 4 duplicates of the same type, and 4 postcards) 41 historical photographs with 23 enlargements made in 1990. The enlargement process blurred some of the images significantly. A portion of the photographs have been identified by the donor and written on the reverse side of the images. Also include are 4 issues of "El Palacio," a weekly review of the arts and sciences in the Southwest and published jointly by the School of American Research, the University of New Mexico, and the Museum of New Mexico. Two of the issues contain articles on Chaco Canyon. Collection/Series: 0034/004 Series Title: SERIES 4: ALDEN HAYES PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION Accession: CHCU-00730 Catalog Nbr: CHCU 104482 Inclusive Dates: 1936-1940 History: Al Hayes first came to Chaco in 1935 as an errand boy for Edgar L. Heweitt. In 1937-37 he was a student with the UNM field school. He later went on to become a professional archaeologist with a long and distinguished career. From 1971-1975 he was a research archaeologist with the Chaco Center, and oversaw the 100% site survey of Chaco Canyon National Monument from 1972-1975. Mr. Hayes donated the photographs to the park during the Chaco Old Timer's Reunion in 1990. Images include sites in the canyon, students, crew, local Navajos, and the living and working quarters of the field school. The photographs have been identified by the done and information written on the reverse side of the image. Many of these descriptions do not correspond to the five elements currently in the series. The original extent was listed as 15, but there is no evidence of any photographs beyond the 3 photo cards and 2 negatives listed in the series. The bulk of the correspondence follows the Reunion, either thanking the organizers for their work on the Reunion, or apologizing for being unable to attend. In some cases, the letters were apparently accompanied by photographs relevant to the Reunion, but they have since been disassociated, perhaps by the recipients, and it is unclear if they have been assimilated into the collection. The undated letters are the standard form letters and information packets sent out to potential attendees. The information consists of a summary of the reunion and an agenda.

The photographs (5 of which are duplicates) are accompanied by identification of some of the individuals shown. The papers include reduced photocopies of letters regarding the reunion, a list of individuals who sent photocopies of photos, and photocopies of photographs. 3 of the photos thus copied (59038-59040) are duplicated on photocards in the Alden Hayes Photo Collection (series 6 of this collection), and stored in the PHOTO CAB 0034/06. The other 8 copies are of the photographs in this series. All photocopies are black and white, the photographs are color. Two of the photocopied letters are addressed to 'Jud. Snow'.
