Pope Francis' new encyclical "Laudato Si:' On Care for Our Common Home" is addressed to "every person living on this plan-et." That means you. And, come to think of it, the encyclical also would apply to the astronauts living in the Interna onal Space Sta on, even though technically they're not on this planet.

Excerpts from Laudato Si CHAPTER TWO -- THE GOSPEL OF CREATION

I. THE LIGHT OFFERED BY FAITH 63 63. If we are truly concerned to develop an ecology capable of remedying the damage we have done, no branch of the sciences and no form of wisdom can be le out, and that includes religion and the language par cular to it. II. THE WISDOM OF THE BIBLICAL ACCOUNTS 65 65. The Bible teaches that every man and woman is created out of love and made in God’s image and likeness (cf. Gen 1:26). This shows us the immense dignity of each per-son, “who is not just something, but someone... How wonderful is the certainty that each human life is not adri in the midst of hopeless chaos, in a world ruled by pure chance or endlessly recurring cycles! 70. Disregard for the duty to cul vate and maintain a proper rela onship with my neigh-

bour, for whose care and custody I am responsible, ruins my rela onship with my own self, with others, with God and with the earth. When all these rela onships are neglected, when jus ce no longer dwells in the land, the Bible tells us that life itself is endangered.

III. THE MYSTERY OF THE UNIVERSE 76

81. Human beings, even if we postulate a process of evolu on, also possess a uniqueness which cannot be fully explained by the evolu on of other open systems. Each of us has his or her own personal iden ty and is capable of entering into dialogue with others and with God himself. Our capacity to reason, to develop arguments, to be in-ven ve, to interpret reality and to create art, along with other not yet discovered capaci es, are signs of a unique-ness which transcends the spheres of physics and biology.

V. A UNIVERSAL COMMUNION 89

90. At mes we see an obsession with denying any pre-eminence to the human person; more zeal is shown in pro-tec ng other species than in defending the dignity which all human beings share in equal measure. Certainly, we should be concerned lest other living beings be treated irresponsibly. But we should be par cularly indignant at the enormous inequali es in our midst, whereby we con nue to tolerate some considering themselves more worthy than others. We fail to see that some are mired in desperate and degrading poverty, with no way out, while others have not the faintest idea of what to do with their possessions, vainly showing off their supposed superiority and leaving behind them so much waste which, if it were the case everywhere, would destroy the planet. In prac ce, we con nue to tolerate that some consider themselves more human than others, as if they had been born with greater rights. 91. A sense of deep communion with the rest of nature cannot be real if our hearts lack tenderness, compassion and concern for our fellow human beings. It is clearly inconsistent to combat trafficking in endangered species while remaining completely indifferent to human trafficking, unconcerned about the poor, or undertaking to de-stroy another human being deemed unwanted.

VI. THE COMMON DESTINATION OF GOODS 93

93. The principle of the subordina on of private property to the universal des na on of goods, and thus the right of everyone to their use, is a golden rule of social conduct and “the first principle of the whole ethical and so-cial order”.[71] The Chris an tradi on has never recognized the right to private property as absolute or inviola-ble, and has stressed the social purpose of all forms of private property.

HOSPITAL VISITS: If you or a loved one are in the hospital and would like a visit from our ministers, deacons or priests, you must call the rectory and request a visit. The privacy law states that the hospital cannot provide a list when we come o visit our parishioners. And even if they do, pa ents that come to the hospital through the Emergency Room never get their “parish” listed — it’s not one of the emergency ques ons. Even though hospital personnel can call the parish at the pa ent’s request, it is best for the pa ent or a family member to call the rectory.

THE FRIENDSHIP CLUB of St. Ferdinand is anxious to welcome you. We meet every Monday in the Convent from 10:00AM-3:00PM with coffee and a snack at noon. Archbishop Cupich Congratulates Bishop-elect Robert Barron on his Appointment to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles July 21, 2015 The Holy Father’s appointment of Bishop-elect Robert Barron as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles today brings honor to the Archdiocese of Chicago and the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary, where he has served as Rector since July 1, 2012. What does it mean to have a Mass offered for someone? An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: in thanksgiving, for the inten ons of another person or as is most com-mon, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died for the souls in purgatory. One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one’s soul. We find not only the origins of this prac ce da ng to the early Church but we also clearly recognize its importance. Offering Mass for a special Inten on is a long standing tradi on in the Catholic Church. It is usually considered that special graces are ob-tained for whom the Mass is said. As I’ve men oned several mes in this space, I’m no theologian. I’m no Scripture scholar, either, but I read something interes ng about the Book a while back that comes into play with today’s Gospel. Here, the Evangelist John speaks of Jesus feeding the five thousand. We all know the story. Or we should, because we hear it o en enough. And that’s the cool thing. Of all the miracles we read of Jesus doing in the Gospels--of all the storms he calmed at sea, and of all the people he cured--or even raised from the dead--and of all the mighty deeds he performed, the story of him feeding the five thousand is the only miracle that makes it into all four of the Gos-pels. Think about that. Ma hew writes about it (Mt 14:13-21). Mark writes about it (Mk 6:34-44). Luke writes about it (Lk 9:10-17). And today, John writes about it (Jn 6:1-15). There are some differences from author to author as we would expect (ask four people to give an accoun ng of the same event and you’ll get four different ver-sions). But the core of each telling is the same. A priest told me once that if Jesus repeats something mul ple mes, then we had be er pay a en on. By extension, the same logic applies here. Tra-di on holds that the Scriptures are wri en by humans, but inspired by God. Accordingly, the message here must be very important. So…what’s the message? To my (non-theologian/non-Scripture scholar) understanding , the surface message--that Jesus can take a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish and feed five thousand with twelve-wicker-baskets-

full of le overs--is easy for me to grasp. But it’s easy to grasp in the same way that it’s easy to grasp Jesus walking on water, or changing water into wine, or telling Lazarus to come out of that tomb. I get miracles. Jesus is God, a er all. And almost by defini on beyond this fundamental truth, the miracles follow. I mean, who wants/needs a God who doesn’t do miracles? But the mul plica on-of-loaves miracle can’t be the message the four writers had in mind here. Too easy. What’s the real message, then? What’s the story behind the story? Actually, I think there are two. One is the foreshadowing of the Eu-charis c feast. But also, I think Ma hew, Mark, Luke, and John are driving home the point that as believers in the Christ, we are all players in the salva on story. Look closely at the four tellings. In each version, the disciples first express concern that they can’t feed the masses. Jesus hears the concern but keeps talking un l the loaves and fishes surface. Now he has something to work with. Could he have fed the five thousand on his own? Of course! He can walk on water, for God’s sake. But he seems to be saying to the disciples (and to all of us who knock on his door with impossible requests), “Stop telling me about what you don’t have. Tell me about what you do have…” In a Kingdom-building context, we all have shortcoming. But we all have gi s, too. And when we bring them forth for the good, good things happen. Miracles, even. At least the Evangelists see it this way. And me? Yeah. I’m with those guys.

BAPTISM:

For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the 12:30PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of the month at the 3:00PM Mass.
