It is that time again, when you will have to miss us! Yes, the semester is ending. It was

indeed a beautiful journey and experience working with you, our readers. This time, I am giving you a round of applause for the loyalty that you showed us. My team, my team! Need I to say more? You are amazing.

I am touched by an opinion piece written by our very own Thomas who managed to alleviate my ignorance on

the fashion of wearing glasses. I never really realized that this type of trend had an effect on those that really need the glasses. It is through him, that I learnt of the hardships that most of the people we call “four eyes” go through. Bullying doesn’t start and end with physical torture, there is emotional torture to it as well. People live with these labels throughout their lives; they live with this pain all because they have no choice but to wear the specs. They are reminded of how different they are. The minority, the “othering”; this has to stop! We need to start being monochromic in order to be able to view life from all perspectives.

I still applaud Prof Eno Akpabio for allowing us to broaden our knowledge through this platform. Students have things bottled up inside, it is through writing that they are able to educate other students, and not only that, it is a sort of catharsis.Add me on facebook “Elisabeth Biyot Massamba”, let us have a moment and talk about “THE STUDENT LIFE”. A historic first for the country and the University of Namibia was

the graduation ceremony of thirty five medical doctors at the April 15 Convocation Ceremony.

The University of Namibia’s vice chancellor, Professor Lazarus Hangula in his speech during the event noted that it is challenging to do things one has never done before and that even though there were ups and downs especially for the graduates, the experience made them better and more matured.

Hangula assured the nation that the doctors would deliver having earned the confidence of the Health Professions Council of Namibia (HPCN). He added that expansions are being considered to accommodate at least 100 students out of over a thousand applicants each year for the course.

The dean of the School of Health Sciences, Professor Peter Nyarongo said that it is a very exciting moment as it is their school’s little contribution to the development of the nation by giving young people the opportunity to grow and realize their dreams.Nyarongo added that the controversies and challenges were borne out of concerns about the quality and safety of patients, hence it was important that there was that debate and engagement. A reference to the health council’s reluctance to initially register the doctors. “I am very excited because it is always great to graduate, but this was dampened by the negative press,” said Aldrine Haruvivi, one of the graduating students. “Anyway, that

“I am proud that Namibia is breaking new grounds; this is a first for our country”

"It is a very exciting moment as it is their school’s little contribution to the development of the nation by giving young people the opportunity to grow and realize their dreams."

was just one of the challenges, otherwise I am happy. I made it as it is always good to do what you always wanted to do.”

Kenny Adenuga from the School of Health Sciences was excited to witness the graduation of the new doctors. “It is motivating in the face of all the challenges,” Adenuga said. “Hence there is hope for the rest of us.”“I am proud that Namibia is breaking new grounds; this is a first for our country”, said Johanna Joseph, a patient at the Katutura State Hospital. “I’m glad that now to be a Doctor you don’t have to go out of the country to study.”

The graduation ceremonies for the School of Health Sciences along with that of the Faculties of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Education and Law took place at Safari Hotels and Conference Centre.

The University of Namibia’s Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences is planning a summer school to assist

student in their studies.

“We would like to come up with a spring school almost like a summer school but at a higher level for students of economics, sociology and politics,” said Dr Jacob Nyambe, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management Science. “We would like to start during the June/July holiday but we are still working on it.”Majority of the economics students on campus expressed positive sentiments about the initiative. A second year economics student who did not volunteer his name expressed excitement: “Oh! Really? I had no idea about this programme, but if it is true and it actually happens then that’s good because we need the extra lessons.” The Faculty of Economics representative, Ms. Bondo Chisanga said as a faculty they are really hoping for the program to get the “green light” because it would be very helpful for those that are interested.

The University of Namibia (UNAm) continues to improve the living standards of students living with disabilities. According to a survey carried out by

UNAm’s Disability Unit last year, UNAm is ranked number one of all institutions of higher learning in Namibia when it comes to inclusiveness as regards physically challenged students.

The institution has built wide open corridors, elevators and classrooms to accommodate physically challenged students as well as introduced a braille system for the visually impaired. “Physically challenged students may not have had the opportunity in the past to receive the recognition they deserve,” said Simson Paulus, a third year media Studies’ student. “however, those days are clearly over.”

Paulus thanked UNAm for putting in place a conducive environment for all students in order to close the gap between those with and without disabilities adding that disability does not mean that one is not able to achieve great heights. he encouraged fellow students living with disability to study hard and aim high.

Agnes hausiku, a second year Social work student, points out that a lot still needs to be done from the university’s side in order to improve the living standards of students living with disabilities. “Physically challenged students are still faced with obstacles, example when the elevator is not working we are unable to attend classes,” hausiku said. “I wish to thank students who always avail themselves to help lift my wheel chair in order to enable me get access to classrooms.” The University of Namibia’s Disability Unit was created to oversee the welfare of physically challenged students.

The Ministry of Health and Social Services in collaboration with the University of Namibia (UNAM) and School of Health

Sciences had a health information session involving eye, blood pressure and Haemo-Glucotestson recently. The session sensitized students about health issues related to sight, cancer, blood pressure and diabetes. Students got their Body Mass Index (BMI) checked to see if their heights were in correlation with their weights. According to Gabriel Vasconcelho, a second year student at the school of health sciences, a high BMI means that a person is either overweight or underweight.

The Haemo-Glucotestson test was done to detect the presence of diabetes in the body and the eye test, which involved a massage, was done to spot any discoloration or cataracts in the eyes. Brochures and pamphlets with information on cervical, breast and prostate cancers were also handed out to those who took part in the tests for further evaluation at clinics.

Thomas Angula, a medical student emphasised the importance of having a blood pressure test. “It is important to have a test done at least once every six months,” Angula said. “Tests that show

counts lower than 90 indicate that the blood pressure is low and this may be due to iron deficiency in the blood while high blood pressure (HBP) may lead to heart conditions like coronary disease and this may result in drastic weight loss and even a stroke.” He identified the main causes of HBP as obesity, high salt intake, and stress. Hypertension drugs are known to lower the blood pressure but other causes involve allergic reaction to pills.Angula also gave information on how one can protect themselves from blood pressure problems. “Exercise is important, as it strengthens body muscles,” he said. “Caffeine also helps with low blood pressure.” The event took place at the University of Namibia main campus library.

The UNAM Information Society (UIS) went on an educational trip to The Namibian Newspaper and the National Library in Windhoek recently.

The visit was an outreach programme organised by the Society’s management to familiarize its members with their industries of specialization. In an interview with UNAM Echo, the Society’s Vice President, Basson Bianca, said that these types of excursions will be something that the society will keep on doing in order to get the members of the society exposed to the real world within their respective industries.

She further urged students from the Department of Information and Communication Studies to join and take ownership of the society as well as utilise the platform presented through the society to engage with stakeholder in the industry. Hosea Idipo, a final year Media student who was part of the excursion described it as a phenomenal experience which really opens up one’s mind about what is happening out there and one can secure internships that most final year students struggle to obtain.

CES undergoes name change and restructuringby mupurua karouue

The Centre for External Studies (CES) has changed its name to the Centre for Open, Distance and elearning (CODel) and is also undergoing restructuring. The name-change took effect last November at the time of the appointment of the new director, Dr .maggy beukes-Amiss who is the former director of the Centre for elearning and Interactive multimedia. The two centres have merged under her leadership.

The restructuring in the centre has resulted in the dissolution of the Department of Student Support whose staffs are now spread out into different faculties with each having

its own distance coordinator whom the students can correspond with. like any other change, there are challenges with the restructuring, “we are still facing transitional challenges,” said welma Davies, who is currently the Acting Assistant Registrar.\The former Assistant Registrar, Carin Slabbert, stated that The Department of materials Development and Instructional Design remains a part of the Centre and will in future move its offices to the UNAm library close to the elearning offices. when asked about the restructuring, a lecturer in the department who did not supply their name said that they were “made aware of the changes” and did not feel affected by it. easier for them as distance students. “I think it’s good that each faculty has its own student support now,” said Angel. “I feel like they went out of their way to really make us feel taken care of because it makes it easier for us students and maybe it will also make for faster turnaround time.” Other changes in leadership include the Deputy Director position which is now occupied by ms. Anna-marie Schaller-Nangolo. CES manages 10 Regional Centres across the country and has an intake of over 4000 students.

The University of Namibia’s main Campus library in windhoek was flooded during the early hours of Friday 08th April due to a pipe burst. when library

employees resumed for work they found the library floor submerged in water.

UNAm librarian, Joseph Ndinoshiho, told UNAm Echo that the situation was being addressed by the estate department and investigations into the underlying cause of the burst pipe was underway. he added that the library will be re-opened to the students and other users at around 14h00 hours. Ndinoshiho said that there were no damaged books as employees managed to salvage the materials.

“The pipe burst mostly affected the lower ground floor which houses the Special Collections, Technical services and Archives.” clarified Ndinoshiho whose shoes and trousers’ hem were soaked from the water. According to a notice released by the library management these areas will be off limits until further notice to allow for restoration.

The situation caused inconveniences to students who UNAm Echo found seated at the library stairs waiting for the library to open. Darius kamati, a Centre for External Studies’ (CES) student described the situation as

unacceptable as he had to type an assignment that was due that day but couldn’t since the library was closed. “I’m a distance student and I just wanted to type my assignment, print and go submit before 11.00 hours because I need to go back to work before 12 noon,” an exasperated kamati said.Another student who spoke on condition of anonymity said that she wanted to go work on her research proposal that was due that day. “I wanted to go edit my proposal for submission today because my laptop is broken and I rely on library computers to do my school work,” the anonymous source said. “I have no choice than to go and explain the situation to my supervisor.”

UNAm Public Relations Officer (PRO), John haufiku said that the situation is under control. “As we speak, the estate department has repaired the broken pipe and this also explains why water was stopped in the whole campus to allow our plumbers to work on the pipe.” haufiku added that the library will be re-open shortly and there were no damaged library books.

The Department of Social work organized a welcome ceremony for first year students with the objective of orientating and supporting them in their academic

journey.

At the ceremony, the first year students signed a Contract on Essential Skills, Values and Standards of Professional Conduct. A UNAm Social work lecturer, ms Rachel Freeman, stated that social work is a profession dedicated to enhancing human capacity to solve complex social problems in order to create a more humane and just society. Freeman emphasized that the department enrols approximately 60 first year students each year. It employs specialists in palliative care, child and family and gerontology amongst others.

Guest lecturer and social worker, Gerry Tyrrell from minnesota and the acting President of UNAm Student Social work Society, mr. Samuel Shimuningeni, graced the occasion. The principal responsibility of the Social work Department at UNAm is the creation and transmission of knowledge, skills and understanding as well as the advancement of social work and the achievement of social justice.

Students are complaining about the shortage of books at the Information and learning Resource Centre

commonly known as the library.

Students go to the library to look for books but to their dismay find out that the book they need has been lent out.According to Tenjiwe Nyambe a second year student of library and Information Studies, there are a few books in the library and it is inconvenient for students especially when you need these resources for assignments.

A source who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak on behalf of the library management noted that “there is a shortage of books because they are expensive. however, students are provided with 3G modems by the University of Namibia to enable them find the information they need on their personal computers via the internet if they cannot access books in the library.” Irmela PFOhl, a librarian in the technical section agrees with the students that books are not enough because of the high cost of books.

“we make book budgets for each department every year but books are so expensive,” PFOhl said “For example, in the science department, one book can cost up to N$4000. Even so, our aim is to do better to make sure that there enough books for students.”

Students are unhappy about UNAm’s new gate as the distance from the gate to the campus is too long.

belinda mafwila, a first year off-campus student said that the distance from the new gate to the science block where she has most of her classes is making her want to quit attending classes. “This distance is too much for me, I cannot continue for the whole year like this,” fumed mafwila.

hertha Angula, a second year student also complained about the distance. “It’s difficult for me to make it to class on time,” Angula said. “my right leg is in a plaster from injuries I sustained from an accident last year.” Another student who wishes to remain anonymous said that the distance from the new gate is very problematic. “UNAm must allow taxis to drive into the premises and have the taxi rank near the leisure centre,” the anonymous source said.matheus Shikongo, a final year student who is resident on campus takes a different view arguing that taxis should only be allowed inside the premises when a student has luggage or bags.

“I stay at the Old hostel and when I buy a lot of things from town, I’m forced to walk with them from the gate to my room,” Shikongo said.A security guard with Shilimela Security who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of losing their job also stressed that the distance from the gate to the classrooms is too far and that it is not in the security guards’ remit to allow taxis inside the premises: “we are given firm instructions not to allow taxis inside the campus.”Although the gate is far and inconvenient, UNAm has installed many safety features and cameras for students’ safety while work continues on the main gate.

Students taking English as part of a double major and who are planning on pursuing their

master’s degree in English may not qualify for admission into the programme.

Professor Jairos Kangira, Dean of the faculty of humanities and social sciences, stressed that if a student is taking English as a minor subject, he or she cannot qualify to do a master’s degree in English.

“Should a student want to further his/her studies at master’s degree programme level, such a student will need to do some additional modules in English in order for him or her to qualify for the master’s degree programme.”He stressed that a majority of students who are doing double major subjects are under the impression that they are eligible for master’s degree programme admission. This ignorance can be attributed to lack of interest in reading the prospectus. It is required of every student to read the prospectus in order to be familiar with all rules pertaining to degree programmes.

"Relevant undergraduate degree is a condition for a master’s degree"

By Freddie Muyamba

“Students who are currently enrolled for their honour’s degree in English can go straight to the master’s degree programme, provided they meet the admission requirement,” Kangira said. “It is advisable for students to pursue their master’s degree in their major subjects. Doing postgraduate programme in your subjects or in the same field with your undergraduate degree has many advantages.”

According to an official from the Namibia Student Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF) who prefers to be anonymous, they only give loans to those students who are doing their postgraduate programmes in the same field as their undergraduate degrees. “For example, if you want a loan from us and want to do a master’s degree in Media studies, you must have done BA degree in Media studies,” the anonymous NSFAF officer said. “Even if you gain admission you do not qualify for our loans.”

The School of Health Sciences is a Campus that has the longest academic year among

UNAM Campus. This means that while other students are busy with registration, the former’s students will already be in their second week of classes. Erastus John, the Student support officer at the school said that the students’ schedules is so tight that they have no time and little room to partake in leisure activities. He also stated that on top of having long hours, they have to go into the field from as early as second year to intern in hospitals.“These students have no time for even school functions,” said John. “For example, we hosted a general assembly in March and only 30 students attended.” John said that functions that the students prefer are the Swearing in ceremonies and “Christmas in October”.“We study hard and play hard,” said Ahmed Hosny, a students at the School of Health Sciences.

Other students said it’s not all work and no play at the School of Health Sciences. “We have functions that are probably way cooler than any other UNAM campus and we sure know how to turn up,” said Theresa Sefu, a third year medical student.

“Yes there is a lot to do academically but when we get that one-night off to go and party, we utilize it to the fullest.”

It’s not all work and no play at UNAM’s School of Health Sciences”

The Zimbabwean community at the University of Namibia were in a jolly mood at Double Mt (DMT) lounge which was packed with patriotic

Zimbabweans singing along to their favourite tunes; the most notable being “Disappear”. The 18th of April Marks another year since Zimbabwe got independence making this a 36th birthday for all Zimbabweans. Celebrations were under way the whole weekend. In as much as everyone was in a jovial and celebratory mood, other Zimbabweans voiced their opinions of being left out.

“People are saying this is a Zimbabwean Independence but I beg to differ,” said a Zimbabwean who spoke on condition of anonymity. This independence celebration is not for Zimbabweans, it’s for Shonas. This is a Shona independence, because at DMT, not even one Ndebele song was played.”

A recent UNAM Graduate from Zimbabwe, Mzomuhle Sibanda, stated that this Graduation being set on a Friday before Zimbabwean independence is no coincidence. “Yes we graduated on Friday but come Monday the Zimbabwean independence will show us that the hustle begins,” Sibanda said. “We might have our degrees now but how many Zimbabweans who have been free since 1980 and have PhDs are selling on side streets?”

Popular sketch comic on social media Known as Aunty Mavis (who acts as an illegal woman living in Namibia and looking for a home affairs boyfriend) posted a video stating that Zimbabwean independence is not a national event only just like roaches, Zimbabweans are everywhere thus it should be made an international holiday.

sIppIng water bottles now allowed In the lIbrary

The University of Namibia’s (UNAM) library now allows students to enter the library with sipping water bottles.

According to the Customer Satisfaction Survey (LIbQual 2014) students have raised concerns that they need drinking water in the library for health purposes. The UNAM website stated that it is for this reason that the UNAM library management allowed students to enter the library with sipping water bottles.

The condition is however clear that only “sipping bottles” are allowed, to avoid accidental water spills on books and ICT equipment and this provision is only valid until 30 June 2016 (the end of first semester).Matheus Simeon, a final year accounting student stated that the decision was a good one as the library could really get hot at times and this make one want to drink plenty of water to make studying easier.

The samples below are the only preferred types of bottles that are allowed..

ladies take the lead in the Geography, history and Environmental Studies’

Departmentby Gracia mwangeFour female students occupy the position of students’ assistants in the department of Geography, history and Environmental studies. They are Sunnypo Imalwa, Alice-Ally Indongo, Victoria Amon and martha Nanyangwe.

“Unfortunately, we had one male applicant who did not meet the requirements, therefore we could not hire him,” said ms. menjono Evaldine, a lecturer in the department. “we would love to have a male student assisting in the department especially with carrying boxes, but we hire based on merit.”The department advertised for four student assistants and approved seven applicants for interviews of which the four female students were successful.

“The interviews took about 10 minutes each,” said ms. Ellen kimaro the head of Department. “The criteria for selection was competency, reliability and professionalism.” The main roles of the student’s assistants are to invigilate during tests and perform

some administrative duties such as the recording of student marks or tests results; scanning and photocopying of literatures from lecturers to be uploaded on to the UNAm portal; collecting office supplies; maintaining order in the GIS labs and the history section reading room.

Other duties include assisting in planning for field excursion and fieldwork, ensuring that the reading room is properly setup for meetings, assisting lecturers with setting up technical equipment for presentations, running errands for lecturers such as putting up posters of significant upcoming events amongst others. “I have to give it my best because I am being evaluated and it’s for my CV” said Imalwa, one of the successful candidates.

“The show must go on” – Paul Da Prince

Paul Munanjala well known as Paul da Prince is an Electronic Media graduate student from the University of Namibia. Groomed in Lusaka Zambia, the 24-year old has made a name for himself through his music and as a TV/Radio personality. On a one-on-one interview with UNAM Echo, about his music career and how he managed to juggle work and school, this is what he had to say.

Q: How was your childhood like?

ANSWER- My childhood was fun, watched a lot of cartoons. I liked playing games with other kids and this type of interaction really helped me in a later stage on how to socialize with people.

Q: What has been the most touching or amazing moment you have experienced as a TV host?

ANSWER - Amazing, this wasn’t really on TV, I would say the time I met Trey Songz. As an MC you get to speak to a lot of people either on TV or on Stage. Hosting the Trey Songz concert was the most amazing moment I can recall in my career.

Q: What other TV hosts has been an inspiration to your work?

ANSWER - Somebody like John Dickens from the UK, he does the football show at the weekends. People like I.K, he hosts Big Brother, I like the way they go about their work.

Q: When and how did you first become interested in music?

ANSWER - I became interested in music when I was young. My dad would always play music in the house especially during holidays. Apart from that my aunty used to play music and that influenced me and the type of genres I listen to.

I have been doing music for 4 years now professionally but I have been into music since 2007 when I too part in a singing competition “Teen Star” and won second prize in Zambia.

Q: Who Are Your Musical Influences and why?

ANSWER - My musical influences are Michael Jackson, Usher, Chris Brown, Neyo, R Kelly, and the rest. It’s because I like the way they work hard in their careers; they take it so seriously. They have been trend setters, everything they put out seems to have an impact on people. The fact that Michael Jackson is the king of pop really changed music, not single-handedly but he had a large part in music in the 80’s, 90’s and 2000 before his passing. I think he really inspired a lot of young people who are actually artistes now. It’s an honour to have lived while he is still doing his thing ‘cause that has really had a lot of influence on my work as well.

Q: Do you perform in public?

ANSWER - Yes I perform in public, I have done quite a lot of shows apart from UNAM. I have performed at big events such as the AKA concert, Cassper Nyovest where I opened the show which was really an honour for me.

Q: How do you handle mistakes during a performance?

ANSWER - Well, you act like it didn’t actually happen. You act like its part of the performance. I haven’t really had a major mistake; it’s mostly just missing a step in a dance move. You really just have to go on, the show must go on. You don’t really dwell on it. You just put pressure on yourself to do better next time.

Q: How do you balance your music with other obligations - work, school?

ANSWER - I think it’s about time management/prioritizing, anything is possible if you put the right time and mind to it. That has really been the ethic I have been working with over the past couple of years, especially when I was at UNAM. It was hard because I had two jobs, sometimes three.

I had to DJ at night, work on my thesis, go to work on TV. It was quite a cycle as I had class in between. It’s pretty much about prioritizing and time management, knowing what needs to be done at a certain time because not everything can happen at the same time. You need to put what’s more important first at all times.

Q: What are your songs about?

ANSWER - My songs are mostly about girls, relationships and some of them are about life and I think I have recorded a lot of songs not just the ones I put on my album.

The first track on my album really talks about how I feel blessed because it’s called “blessed”. I think the journey I have had in music could not have been possible without the people who support me. People who have been with me from the start, the fans who support me and God. I have track a “Marry you” which talks about marriage which are things we don’t really discuss these days, relationships, cohabiting without getting into the marriage phase, that’s what the song is really about. Most of the other songs are just about relationships.

Q: What are your immediate music career goals? (In the next 1 to 3 years.)

ANSWER: This year, since I just dropped my album, I’m going to do quite a lot of videos, maybe three, four, or five. I want to get my music out there because over the past couple of years I have been held back ‘cause of school. I haven’t been putting 100% into my music but I’m glad that whoever got to listen to it, listened and they have made me work hard for my album. Within the next 1 to 3 years, I’m looking forward to more collaborations.

My first album featured artists like Bertholdt and Oteya which is really an achievement for me because having an established artiste on your first album sets a trend on what you want for your next one. I have international collaborations such as Anthony Faulkner from the United States and T.R.E from the UK. I want to do more of that in the next couple of years, collaborate with more African artistes and bring them all into one project. I’m not just doing it for awards, I want to get more music out there, expand the fan base and hopefully perform outside the country one day.

Q: Professionally, what’s your goal?

ANSWER - I would definitely love to work for myself. Set up my own company because what I do now is inspire young people to work. I would like to recruit more young people so they can nourish their skills and become better. I want to work for myself, have my own media company.

Q: What wouldn’t you do without?

ANSWER - I can’t do without my music, if I don’t have my phone I have to have my iPod, I definitely can’t do without music.

A fourth year Media student, majoring in Public Relations and Advertising launched her gospel album recently at the National Theatre of Namibia.

Maranatha Sophia Goroh who says she was born with raw talent took the stage in an angelic white dress to give the audience a touch of her heart. The album consist of thirteen tracks and the one titled ‘smile’ carries the most sentimental meaning for her and that is to smile no matter what anyone is going through. With final year at school, rehearsals and preparing for the launch Maranatha said, “I cannot express my gratitude enough towards God; he carried me through.”

Maranatha (25) was born in Nigeria and raised in Windhoek. She started her music career at a very young age. She sang in her church choir and was a member of the worship team from a tender age. Being raised by a well-rooted gospel and musical family which stood by her side gave her the courage to pursue her music career.“It was not easy to get where I am now, but it is worth it,” Maranatha said. “What prompted me to take music further was when I went to the TBN conference in 2014 and I got a recording contract.” Pastor Haruna Goroh said that he sees immense talent in his daughter and doesn’t want her to limit herself to Africa: “She belongs out there in the world.”

Maranatha’s prime goal now is to finish her studies and then embark on the journey of becoming a world-renown gospel artiste. She believes that education remains key and to get to where she wants to be, dedication starts at school. The launch was a huge success and CD sales are still up and running. Maranatha encourages all students and lecturers to get the album so everyone can smile with her through difficult days.

Pixel media sponsored the statistics society’s well-attended colour party at the UNAM sports ground recently.

The main objective was to create awareness for statistics and population studies in Namibia, with the goal of promoting the image of statistics at UNAM as well as in Namibia. The society also used the occasion to generate money for tutorial classes, public lectures to be addressed by the Namibian Statistics Agency and speakers from UNAM Department of Statistics.

The president of the society, Mwandingi Shaalula Leonard, said the colour party was organized by the members of the statistics society with their own funds in conjunction with Pixel media who sponsored the stage, DJ’s, PA system and colour powder. Miss Lydia Ismelda Pokolo an executive of the statistics society told UNAM Echo that since it was the first party of its kind to be hosted at UNAM, the attendance was not as much as they had envisaged but, hopefully, next time it will be bigger and better. “Coming from our side, we did everything we could to make the colour party a success,” Pokolo said. “We advertised with UNAM Radio, Whatagwan NBC as well as put up posters on campus.” Pokolo said that she is looking forward to next year’s colour party since the society is going to turn this into an annual event with a cultural theme.

“I intend to host more shows on campus with the help of my fellow comedians who have always been there such as the likes of Chiro, Lloyd, Kris with a K and Lifa,” Courage said. “Comedy is my

It’s that time of the year where ladies freak-out, “I DO NOT HAVE WINTER CLOTHES, WHAT WILL I WEAR?” Even though we have not given away the old winter items or only gave away few and the rest are stuffed in some suitcases waiting for winter, I guess it

is in all of us to just want a new wardrobe or essentials for every winter.

Here are few essentials that you can add to your shopping list for this winter. Perfect for any day and occasion:

Dark colours such as black, grey, brown and navy blue are perfect for winter, especially when you do not have a lot of winter items, they do not always stand out but compliment your outfit.

The black coat for example, is one that you can ‘abuse’ all winter and accessorize it with scarfs and accessories that are of different colours, no one will notice that it is your favourite coat. The statement coat, like a red or white coat will make your outerwear the most important aspect of your outfit. Especially when worn with black or neutral colours, you will definitely stand out.

Winter stockings, leggings and skinny jeans; you can choose which ever you like of these items or have them all. They are all perfect for layering and can be worn with the other mentioned essentials.

Besides wearing winter stockings with your dresses, they are also perfect with long coats and ankle or knee-high boots. You can play around with the stockings too and have them in different colours.

Scarfs are my all-time favourite. I have them in different colours and sizes. You can get the blanket wrap scarf too. Especially with an all-black outfit it is a great pop of colour and can be matched with accessories such as a fedora, bags and jewellery.

Who does not love the leather jacket? May be a little too expensive? No worries. There is the pleather jacket and it is just as chic as the leather jacket. They are edgy and add coolness to every outfit be it with a dress or with shirts and jeans.

Every lady would love to rock it with some skinny/boyfriend jeans and heels, boots or sneakers for those casual days. It is such a fashion statement!

Lastly we have the cardigan, and I am so getting myself a couple for this winter. They come in different shapes and lengths, so your pick. Perfect for those laid back days, school and running errands in town. With cardigans you can make your look edgy and formal too, depends on whatever mood you are in or the occasion.

The Khomasdal campus SRC held a team-building workshop recently at the Okahandja Rock Lodge. The aim of the workshop was to motivate students in leadership to work together as a team.

The workshop lasted for about four days with a variety of activities. The activities included rock climbing, paint balls, tyre climbing, snake pit, and treasure hunting. Rock climbing also known as mountain climbing involved getting to the sixth mountain at Leopard Mountain.

Teambuilding is “the act of being one in everything we you do,” said Sydney Musipili Mutelo, a member of the SRC. “Despite the difference in ages, culture and what not.” Mutelo said it is simply just working together with different people.

The Neudamm campus is addressing students’ concerns about purchase of fresh produce, accommodation and furniture shortages.

“we are trying our level best to lighten the burden for our students and make life easier,” said kristus katire, a student support officer. “Complaints by the students were about staff getting first priority in the purchase of farm fresh product with almost nothing left to sell to the students.”

Other issues raised by the students were lack of benches to sit and socialize as well as insufficient accommodation on campus. It has now been resolved that students should purchase meat products on Tuesdays and wednesdays. more benches have also been made available for students’ use. The SRC has also drafted a hostel placement document which has been transmitted to the student development officer and the matrons for their inputs and guidance before it is presented to the students.

The Neudamm farm is highly regarded for its affordable and fresh produce (meat products, dairy products, poultry products, fruits and vegetables). The population of about 150 students is part and parcel of the farm production process through volunteer programs and practicals,

The University of Namibia’s katima mulilo campus is currently unable to accommodate the increased number of students this year as the lecture halls are too small.many students, especially those studying bachelor of Education feel cramped

in the classrooms. Sinvula Simataa, a first year education student complained about the classes being too small for students to learn in a comfortable state. “whenever I’m late, I have to stand at the back of the class or squeeze onto a chair with a classmate,” complained Simataa.martha mushete, a second year education student shares the same sentiments about classrooms being too small and too few to accommodate students. “we education students are more than students from other courses,” mushete said. “Therefore they must build more lecture halls for us.”

The campus does not have the required budget and cannot take steps to remedy the situation for now. The campus director Dr. bennett kangumu explained in an interview that the campus has no funds to build more lecture halls right now but will be doing so in a few years. “Right now we don’t have the money to build more classrooms,” kangumu said. “but by next year or the year after, we will be making some adjustments to accommodate every student.” many students are, however, doing well academically, despite there being a few lecture rooms. The campus is still making adjustments to its curriculum and will be introducing more courses as from next year.

Southern Campus lecturers to be

held accountable

The UNAM Southern campus student–lecturer forum held recently resolved that students

should bring to the attention of management lecturers who miss classes without prior notice for redress.Students were given a week to submit their agenda points and the issue of lecturers missing classes dominated.

Efforts were made by the SRC to get the first year students to be part of the forum. “First year students are known for excluding themselves from events around the campus as they deem them less important,” said Paulus Nambahu, SRC Information and Publicity. “However, the forum was informative for all those that attended.”The event was well attended with the Campus director and lecturers availing themselves. UNAM’s Jose Eduardo campus students narrowly escaped death after a bus in which they were travelling to Racine water fall collided with a bakkie approximately 10 kilometres from Oshakati.SRC for information and publicity, Victor Mwandile confirmed the incident. "It was such a horrific accident,” Mwandile said.

“Thank God none of our students nor our bus driver was injured.”One of the students who was on board when the bus collided spoke to UNAM Echo on condition of anonymity and explained that the incident which was shocking and horrific happened at the blink of an eye.The two day visit was then cancelled due to the accident and the university will make further arrangements regarding when to go for the tour.

I really don’t know who gave approval for this trend but I don’t approve of it. I’ve recently

been bumping into people who wear glasses, not sunglasses but the spectacle kind of glasses for “fun”. It apparently became some kind of a fashion trend and people who actually have 20/20 vision have been getting their so-called “Geek/Nerd Swag On”. Speaking as a veteran wearer of specs, since about the age of 10, I find it offensive.

First and foremost these glasses, which are now being worn by just about everybody these days, are actually meant to help the visually handicapped, like myself, to see! I didn’t just wake up one day at age 10 and decide I was going to wear glasses for the rest of my life, I had an eye test done that proved I had problems seeing things at long distances.

So I find it less than amusing that the device I use to deal with my visual handicap has become a “trendy” fashion accessory. Think of it this way, if you had working legs would you roll around in a wheelchair just because it was “trendy” or “hip”? No! Because that would be insensitive to people who actually need to use a wheelchair to move around. Although that example is a bit on the extreme end, it fundamentally should be no different with glasses.

Secondly, if you weren’t wearing glasses when they were lame, don’t wear them now that they’re cool. I’ll tell you first hand, that up until recently glasses were actually undesirable. Wearing glasses made me a target for teasing during my childhood days. The typical “Four Eyes” jokes and dumb eye tests where kids would ask, “How many fingers am I holding up?” were commonplace growing up.

Genuine spectacle wearers have all gone through a similar experience and struggle. After years of having to put up with that crap, glasses have finally been redesigned, rebranded and are actually really cool. So it rubs me the wrong way when impostors with 20/20 just jump on the bandwagon without understanding the struggles I’ve gone through. If it were up to me, anyone caught wearing glasses that were not gained through a certified optometrist would be fined! I have never seen anyone who has perfect hearing wear a hearing aid as a fashion accessory and so I don’t want to see anyone with 20/20 vision wearing glasses either.

Everyone needs sleep, yet many don’t get enough. If you are a student, you would know the late night struggles and the drowsy early mornings. being deprived of sleep becomes a regular feature of life and there are just not enough hours in a day to be productive enough.

It’s not just quantity that matters when it comes to sleep, but quality. The feelings you have during hours of being awake hinges greatly on how well and how long you’ve slept. It all depends on your day-to-day lifestyle, schedule and bedtime habits. The right choices and actions can make an enormous difference to the quality of your nightly rest.

The importance of sleep is underestimated by students. They forget sleep during periods of stress, not realizing that they are killing their physical and mental health. lack of sleep or even too much sleep affects one’s well-being. It is vital to sleep for a number of reasons. The need for sleep is not just because it is a must but because it is good for the restoration of body and soul. It must not be seen as a passive activity to kill time when there is nothing else to do.

so it seems like I just make it through the day,” said leena malenga, a medical student. “Sleep is not important to me, being productive is.”To what extent do students realize the importance of sleep and how do they see it in relation to brain function as well as emotional well-being? ‘Sleep less and do more’ seems to be a maxim among students that makes them feel like they are actually achieving a lot. but do students know the dreadful consequence of lack of sleep?

many students are working and studying and maintaining the proper balance seems to be inconsequential. The average hard-working student is driven into going to night clubs, entertainment places and places of relaxation in their free time. Yet the average student does not realize that even alcohol intake can make you feel tired because it is a depressant and magnifies the effects of sleep deprivation.

The best medicine for all mood swings, depression or lack of motivation is a good sleep. but it can vary from body to body. Research indicates that adults that get less than seven hours of sleep have difficulty concentrating and have more mood problems than people who sleep seven to nine hours a day.

The following tips will help you optimize your sleep after late classes, long hours of assignments and so much more to maximize mental performance, emotional balance and increased productivity on and off campus all day long.

• Be smart about napping

• Listen to your body

• Sleep eight hours a day

• Try to go to sleep and get up at the same time every day

• Fight after-dinner drowsiness

• Drink water before sleeping and after

Everyone needs sleep, yet many don’t get enough. If you are a student, you would

know the late night struggles and the drowsy early mornings. being deprived of sleep becomes a regular feature of life and there are just not enough hours in a day to be productive enough.

GOD LOVES YOUAs children, we were always taught to believe that ‘God loves us’ and that love can conquer it all.

Growing up in a Christian family, it was important for my parents to teach us what it meant to love and to show others love.

Even now we want to teach this to our children so that they teach it to their children. But in some families, children do not know what love is and how it feels like to be loved because their parents or guardians do not know what it is either. Some might have been hurt by past relationships and never really experienced love. But there is one thing we can be certain about and that is that Jesus loves us and He loves you personally.

This is one of the ultimate expressions of love we can ever receive. In the Gospel of John we see how God expressed His love for us by giving His one and only son, to die on the cross for all our sins. John 3: 16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life”. Wow! Imagine loving someone so much you would sacrifice your only child for them, so they may live. If you never had anyone tell you ‘I love you’, know that Jesus loves you and he will continue to love you because He is our Father. This is the kind of love that will never die nor change because God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. God is love and that is His nature, there is no way He cannot love you. I would like to encourage you to receive the Love God is pouring out in your life with an open heart and know His love never fails.

The University of Namibia’s security has been under scrutiny a couple of times due to the many complaints received from students

being harassed, robbed and their hostel rooms being broken into.

Most of the times, these cases remain unsolved. Question is how safe are we as students on campus? I believe there is a need to make campus safe and conducive. Campus should be one of those places

where each and every student feels safe. The only concern one should have on campus is studying and making sure to meet deadlines for assignments.

Security needs to be a factor taken seriously by the university management. This leads me to the new gate and its function or lack thereof. It is very disheartening to see equipment intended on being used to make campus more secure not being used. We have scanners for backpacks that are not being utilized.

The guards also do not make up for this by, at least, searching bags. I personally believe there is also a need for more security guards on campus.Conclusively, security is vital and of paramount importance. It is a factor that shouldn’t be handled lightly. Make campus safe for everyone.

song

- By Kristian Hafunda

It has been a purple patch for Jeremia Nendongo (Jerry)

during recent games as the University of Namibia football club

(UNAm FC) as the player has been a driving force for the team and cemented

his value at the club.Jerry currently stands at 186cm tall and

he is 24-years-old although he still has some growing up to do. The young UNAm FC player

is already proving a match for many stronger and older players and appears to be the kind of striker

likely to cause mayhem in the years ahead.

Apart from the keen sense and awareness that Jerry possesses, he also has a good temperament, which enables

him to think quickly under pressure while remaining cool in the face of aggressive opposing defenders. The young man from

Oshakati seemed set for great things and following his progress should prove highly entertaining.

As UNAm claimed victory in their match against Julinho Sporting, Jerry scored two goals which led to UNAm’s triumph over bitterly

disappointed Julinho with a 2-1 margin.

The team manager shook him firmly by the hand as he left the pitch on the back of another sterling display. Jerry has really settled into the UNAm team

and is providing his worth ahead of supposedly more-talented players. “we have high hopes for our team and with Jerry in the front in such a perfect

form this season we might get into a prime position or probably win the league,” said hashiti lucas the team’s Goal keeper. “This is because having a team with such

high spirits, anything is possible”.

Hi Aunty I miss my friends but every time I tell them I want to visit them, they always seem to have excuses.

Dear Lonely HeartMaybe you should try to ask your friends in advance, set up dates when you can meet and hang out and see if they will still give you excuses. It could be that they are really busy as the older people get the busier their lives become. In the meantime, try getting new hobbies and making new friends so that you don’t feel so left out.

Hi Aunty I have a boyfriend that I love and am sure he loves me too, but we argue a lot even over simple things. I am tired of these arguments and every time I tell him that I don’t want him anymore, he cries.

Dear Miss Fed upIs the real problem the arguments? Has it ever crossed your mind that maybe you two do not know how to communicate? This is quite common in young love, were couples do not know how to get their point across without starting an argument. And it could also be that you argue about the same thing every time but from different angles so it feels like you fight about almost everything. Since you did not state the main cause of the arguments, aunty can’t help much but I do suggest that you seek professional help as it is clear that you love each other. A relationship therapist will be a great help in your situation.

Dear AuntyI am not sure what’s wrong with me. I am always thinking about negative things in my head. People dying, people having terrible accidents, I even have thoughts of finding my boyfriend cheating or dead. These things are scaring me aunty. I use to be an optimistic person. I don’t know how I lost my self. I tried praying. I don’t know any more aunty.

Dear Cynical Calm down child!! Relax, breathe in and breathe out. You think too much, take it easy and clear your mind of all the stressful things that make you unhappy in your life. I would suggest you seek counselling with a therapist to help you establish a consistent calm and relaxed state of mind whereby positivity is the only thing you see regardless of any negatives that surround you. And remember dear, nothing bad lasts forever, you alone are responsible for your own happiness. So always choose to be and stay happy!

Dear AuntyI am in love with my editor and just don't know what to do. I'm scared that if I tell her I will lose my job

Dear IndecisiveBringing personal intimate issues into the workplace may lead to disastrous circumstances hence one must tread softly with regard to these issues. Try to weigh your options carefully and decide if telling her would be really worth it. Search yourself to discover if you really truly have feelings for her or it may simply be infatuation. Whatever decision you come up with, make sure it’s the right one before you make any move.
