He was one of the greatest greek authors of the 20th century. When Kazantzakis was born in 1883 in Heraklion, Crete had not yet joined the modern Greek state, (which had been established in 1832) and was still under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. From 1902 Kazantzakis studied law at the University of Athens, then went to Paris in 1907 to study philosophy. Here he fell under the influence of Henri Bergson. His 1909 dissertation was titled «Friedrich Nietzsche on the Philosophy of Right and the State.» Upon his return to Greece, he began translating works of philosophy. In 1914 he met Angelos Sikelianos. Together they travelled for two years in places where Greek Orthodox Christian culture flourished, largely influenced by the enthusiastic nationalism of Sikelianos. He visited Berlin, where the political situation was explosive, Kazantzakis discovered communism and became an admirer of Vladimir Lenin. He never became a consistent communist, but visited the Soviet Union and stayed with the Left Opposition politician and writer Victor Serge. He witnessed the rise of Joseph Stalin, and became disillusioned with Soviet-style communism. Around this time, his earlier nationalist beliefs were gradually replaced by a more universal ideology. In 1945, he became the leader of a small party on the non-communist left, and entered the Greek government as Minister without Portfolio. He resigned this post the following year. Late in 1957, even though suffering from leukemia, he set out on one last trip to China and Japan. Falling ill on his return flight, he was transferred to Freiburg, Germany, where he died. He is buried on the wall surrounding the city of Heraklion near the Chania Gate, because the Orthodox Church ruled out his being buried in a cemetery. His epitaph reads «I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free.» e 50th anniversary of the death of Nikos Kazantzakis was selected as main motif for a high value euro collectors› coins; the €10 Greek Nikos Kazantzakis commemorative coin, minted in 2007. His image is shown in the obverse of the coin, while on the reverse the National Emblem of Greece with his signature is depicted. „DANCING ON THE TABLE ON YOUR OWN RISK“ MARIA CALLAS Maria Callas was an American-born Greek soprano and one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. According to her birth certificate, Maria Callas was born Sophia Cecelia Kalos. Critics praised her ‘bel canto’ technique, wideranging voice and dramatic gifts. Callas received her musical education in Athens. Initial- ly, her mother tried to enroll her at the prestigious Ath- ens Conservatoire, without success. At the audition, her voice, still untrained, failed to impress, while the conserv- atoire›s director Filoktitis Oikonomidis refused to accept her without her satisfying the theoretic prerequisites. Born in New York City and raised by an overbearing- mother, she received her musical education in Greece and established her career in Italy. Forced to deal with the exigencies of wartime poverty and with myopia that left her nearly blind onstage, she endured struggles and scandal over the course of her career. She turned herself from a heavy woman into a svelte and glamorous one after a mid-career weight loss, which might have contributed to her vocal decline and the premature end of her career. Her dramatic life and personal tragedy have often over- shadowed Callas the artist in the popular press. However, her artistic achievements were such that Leonard Bern- stein called her «the Bible of opera»;[2] and her influence was so enduring that, in 2006, Opera News wrote of her: «Nearly thirty years after her death, she›s still the defini- tion of the diva as artist and still one of classical music›s best-selling vocalists. Onassis was born in Karatass, a suburb of Smyrna (now İzmir, Turkey) to Socrates and Penelope Dologu. Onassis had one full-sister, Artemis, and two half-sisters, Kalliroi and Merope, by his father›s second marriage following Penelope›s death. Socrates Onassis came from the village of Moutalasski (now named Talas), near Cappadocia in Asia Minor, which is the present-day city of Kayseri, in central Turkey. A successful shipping entrepreneur, he was able to send his children to prestigious schools. At the age of 16, Aristotle Onassis spoke four languages: Greek (his native language), Turkish, Spanish, and English,[4] when he graduated from the local Evangelical Greek School. Onassis imported tobacco from Turkey with help from his father. e tobacco was softer than the Cuban variety, and he was sure it would appeal to women more. After the failure of a contract with Juan Gaona, the director of a major Argentine company, Onassis turned to making his own cigarettes. After some time managing this business and holding a job with Brit- ish United River, he made a considerable amount of money. His power and influence increased rapidly; he frequently at- tended important social events, and in 1925 he received both Argentine and Greek citizenship. According to Peter Evans and Christian Cafarakis (a former employee), a considerable part of the tobacco was smuggled, helping him to rapidly accrue his first million dollars. In 1928, Onassis traded with Greece to the value of US$2,800,000 just four years after his arrival in Argentina.[citation needed] is was due in part to other illegitimate activities such as sabotaging his competitors and fraudulently using the name of a famous cigarette company: Bis. is last enterprise was profitable, but ended when the real Bis company sued him. Onassis died at age 69, on 15 March 1975 at the American Hospital of Paris in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, of respiratory failure, a complication of the myasthenia gravis that he had been suffering from during the last years of his life.
