Fellow Rotarians,
Once again we start a new rotary year, I say welcome to another year of service. The yearlong
of planning has finally arrived and we are now to implement all ideas that we have conceived
to BE A GIFT TO OUR COMMUNITY.
In the 2015-2016 Rotary year, the incoming RI President Ravi Ravindran asked us to BE A
GIFT TO THE WORLD. He said every one of us has something to give – whoever we are,
whatever our place in life, we can give our talent, our knowledge, our abilities, and our effort;
we can give our dedication and our devotion. Through Rotary we can take these gifts and
make a genuine difference in the lives of others and in our world.
Fellow Rotarian, our time is now. It will never come again. Be a gift to the world. I wish you a
most happy, healthy, and prosperous 2015-2016 Rotary Year.

RI NEWS AND INFORMATION
K.R. Ravindran’s life was molded by family, country, and Rotary. Serving as Rotary president is his way of giving back to each of them.
Before he gives a speech, K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran doesn’t like flowery, adulatory introductions. They make him uncom-fortable. The 2015-16 Rotary presidents would rather keep a low profile and share the credit. If it were up to him, you probably wouldn’t even be reading this article.
Negotiating Days of Tranquility during the Sri Lankan civil war so that health workers could administer drops of polio vaccine? Although it was on his desk that the agreement landed, he says, a lot of people worked to make that hap-pen. Rebuilding 23 tsunami-damaged schools for 14,000 children? He merely led the committee. Taking a label-printing business from a small outfit operating in a space the size of a garage to a global powerhouse in the packag-ing business that has helped change the value-added tea industry in his country? Well, he simply happened to be in the right place at the right time.
As Rotary president, he’ll help put his tiny island nation on the global map. “My national anthem will be played in eve-ry country that I visit. My flag will fly wherever I go. The flag of this country will fly outside Rotary headquarters,” he says. “What more can I do for my country than this?”
Ravindran says he doesn’t expect to leave a legacy as Rota-ry president, but he hopes to use his skills to leave the or-ganization better than he found it – and pay forward his debts to all the people who got him where he is today. “Rotary molded me,” he says. “Rotary changed me, and that is why what I do for Rotary now is a hundredth of what I’ve gotten out of Rotary.” — by Diana Schoberg, photography by Alyce Henson.

HEALTH TIPS
Common foods that cause food poisoning
Food poisoning is a relatively common problem that many people face at some point in their life, and alt-hough in most cases it’s not fatal, it is serious and can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable groups, such as chil-dren, the elderly and pregnant women. Sources of food contamination are various and include bacteria salmonel-la and listeria, which can be eliminated through cooking, but not all food we eat goes though heat treatment. Here are common food items that pose a major risk to your health and could lead to food poisoning.
Raw eggs
Raw eggs are very likely to give you food poisoning, ac-counting for more than hundreds of thousands of food-related illnesses in the last few years. Although the likeli-hood of getting food poisoning from raw eggs has de-creased over the past couple of decades, they are still one of the “riskiest” foods you could be consuming.
It is the bacteria called salmonella that is to blame for food poisoning coming from raw eggs, and the trouble lies in the fact that salmonella can’t be detected before it enters the body and wreaks havoc.
Salmonella penetrates the eggs before they are even hatched, contaminating your food and posing a potential threat. Eggs are consumed raw when certain cakes or sweets are made or in instances in which people drink them for various reasons. The truth is, eggs are best con-sumed scrabbled, hard-boiled or coddled if you want all the benefits without exposing yourself to any risks.
Tomatoes
Most people don’t associate tomatoes with food-borne illnesses, yet tomatoes are often a source of disease be-cause they are consumed raw and are seldom subjected to high temperatures.
Not washing the produce that is eaten raw properly, in-cluding leafy greens and in this case, tomatoes, leaves everyone susceptible to serious stomach problems asso-ciated with bacteria that are commonly found in fresh produce but were never meant to enter the human body.

His friends ask for a beer and sandwich but the rabbit says "I wanna cup of coffee" The bartender says, "We don’t serve coffee here" So the rabbit leaves again, but he sees two more friends so he joins them in the bar. His friends order a beer and a sand-wich but the Rabbit still says, "I want a cup of coffee" "Look,” says the bartender "we don’t serve coffee here. Now leave or I will nail your ears to the bar!" So the rabbit leaves, but he yet again sees two more friends and enters the bar. But this time the rabbit says, "Do you have a hammer?" "No" replies the bartender Do you have any nails?"
