President’s RemarksJohn Doty

Being there for each other,

As you’ve heard, our longtime colleague Livingston Sykes died in late-August after an illness. We learned at his funeral about the great visit he had with friends from work in the day(s) before his passing. “The room was rockin’ . . .” we understand. I’m sure Sykes’ daughter and his brother took some comfort in his having those happy moments with friends.

It occurs to me that one of our roles as a community is being there for each other to the extent we can. We have shared experiences and perspectives and can bring each other comfort in hard times – not just in our final days. I know there are many such stories as this across our group. Sometimes it can be as simple as a phone call when you know a friend is down – or an offer of a ride to a new place.

Hard times don’t just involve our final days. Sometimes it’s a matter of a temporary illness, depression at the loss of a loved one, or a financial struggle.

Our friend, Wells Huff, has informed us that he needs to pull back from his communications role for health reasons. We’ve known for awhile that this day would come. We’re in yet another situation in which NGAA-W has a vacancy in a key position. In some ways, this is more important than an executive position ... communication being a centrally important function for our group.

So . . . here’s an opportunity. You can be a central participant in the organization and serve in a role that enables connections among us – that keeps us posted about friends and colleagues in need.

On a related note, I continue to hope we’ll find a way to engage our colleagues from other parts of the St. Louis area. Our periodic meetings in South St Louis are great and I don’t propose to change those. It would make a difference if we had a way to connect with our colleagues and friends throughout the Metro East and the North. (I’ve noticed more and more Illinois license plates in the 2nd Street parking lots – and St. Charles County is an increasingly popular community for NGA’ers.) If you can’t volunteer to join the NGAA-W Board, maybe you can get us started with other avenues of communication – regional get togethers, social media groups, or the like.

Note the date for the upcoming NGA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Our own Bill Heidbreder

along with former co-worker John Tuley will be so honored.

Luncheon NotesPat Wiese

Forty-two retirees and guests attended our June 26th luncheon at Pietro’s. After our enjoyable lunch, we were entertained by the Retro Band. They entertained us with rock & roll, oldies, and R & B songs.

Due to the fact that our President, John Doty, and Past President, Frank Aufmuth, each had a previous commitment, Paulette Martin (she referred to herself as “the third string”) stepped in and took over the role of leader (a natural for her). She led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Our visitors were introduced - Jack Harris (who just turned 90 years old at the end of May), and Doris Driscoll, a new member.

Pat Reed introduced Jack Graham in attendance at the luncheon, along with his daughter-in-law, Shirley. Jack was introduced as the subject of an article in our June 2019 Newsletter. Jack's career at the agency was significant, but his early history was very interesting. As the article describes, his childhood was spent in a Japanese internment camp in SE Asia where he knew Eric Liddell, the subject of the 1981 movie, “Chariots of Fire”. Jack’s birthday is the day before Pearl Harbor.

Walt Rohn, our photographer, asked that everyone sign the paper on their table so he would know who was sitting at each table for picture identification. He also reminded everyone that he had our July activity being held on July 25. All were invited to eat lunch and watch the Cardinals play on the big screen at Ball Park Village.

Jean Seymour reminded us that she had reserved the winery at Defiance Ridge, also the town of Daniel Boone’s home, for Wednesday, October 23.

Pat Reed reminded us of our Annual All Retirees Fall Picnic at Cliff Cave Park’s main pavilion on Monday, October 7. Bring a treat to share and BYOB.

Jim Mohan announced that August 24 would be NGA West’s Family Day.

Mark your calendars, our next NGAA-W Fall luncheon will be held on Wednesday, September 25th.

Winners of the 50/50 raffle were: Mary Decker (2), Nancy Foster, Ruth Walters, Jim Mohan, Pat Wiese, Walt Rohn, Jim Stanton, Bob Eddy, Dennis Terhaar, Bob

Meinhardt, and Jimmy Boyd. Judy Allen, Claire Andracsek, and Pat Wiese won coffee cups that Jim Mohan brought from the museum.

Vice-President of Communications Resignation

“Mr. John Doty, It is with pleasure and regret that I announce my resignation as Vice President of Communications for the West Chapter of NGAA. I have enjoyed my duties and am unhappy that a condition of health makes it necessary to leave them.

NGAA West will be in my thoughts as the chapter goes about its work. May it continue to thrive under thoughtful and talented leadership.

Wells HuffAugust 28, 2021”

NGAA West BoardHELP WANTED

This is your organization – all 356 strong. The ByLaws state that the NGAA West Chapter Executive Board shall consist of six (6) members of the Association: the two most recent Past Presidents of the Association, the elected President, Executive Vice-President, Treasurer, and a Member-at-Large advisor. Of these six we have the Treasurer and Member-at-Large.

We have a temporary volunteer for President, Committee chair volunteers for Membership, Secretary, Web-site, Mailing, Luncheon Entertainment, and multiple Events appointed by prior Boards.

Wells’ letter of resignation to the Board indicates the fragility of members providing NGAAW services to the group.

The NGAA ByLaws, as incorporated in the State of Virginia as a 501c3 non-profit organization require an annual business meeting, a set of officers that form a quorum to identify and conduct day-to-day operations of the organization. Residency in the St. Louis area is not a stipulation to be a BoD member.

The ByLaws require formation of a Nominating Committee at least 90 days prior to the Annual Meeting which will occur on December 11, 2019. Therefore this Newsletter states the Nominating Committees request for potential candidates for the offices of President and Executive Vice-Presiedent.

Those two new officers with the Tresurer and Member-at-Large can form a quorum to conduct business for the organization. We also solicit volunteers for the Communication Committee, vice Wells and back-ups for the six other existing committees.

Send your own or the name(s) of nominee(s) for the three noted vacancies: President, Executive Vice-President, and Communications Vice President and the other Committees to [email protected] by 30 October 2019.

Without those nominations and acceptances to be involved, the West Chapter of NGAA could cease to exist as a NGAA Chapter in January 2020.

Jack Harris Celebrates 90 th Birthday On June 1 of this year, our own Jack Harris celebrated his 90th birthday. A party celebrating this event was held by his family and included old friends. Jack had many friends from his long career with all the NGA West

predecessor agencies. The picture below shows Jack with two of these friends, Dr David Alspaugh and Gene Betz. Jack served in many managerial positions, retiring in 1985 as the Chief, Cartography Dept. After spending 40+ years in a windowless environment, for his retirement years Jack chose the opposite – public, mostly open air, outdoor activities. He became heavily involved in and held offices in groups such as the Missouri Native Plant Society, Webster Groves Nature Study Society – Botany Group, Native Orchid Conference of America and the Missouri Prairie Foundation.
