WINTER WHEAT

SKYFALL Group 1, Milling & Feed

Remains a very significant variety in the market across the bread and feed sectors due to its good disease resistance, late-drill flexibility, stiff straw and early maturity. Widely accepted by UK millers and often finds its way into export cargos.

Suitable for all areas (including Scotland) and soil types with outstanding performance on lighter soils. Best drilled from the last week of September onwards and it can be drilled right through to the end of the first week in March. A lower tillering variety so keep seed rates up, but still very competitive against Blackgrass.

Short, stiff-strawed (8 untreated, 9 treated) and relatively early to mature (0). It has outstanding Brown Rust (8.0) and average Septoria tritici (5.0) resistance but is very susceptible to Yellow Rust (3.4). Good performance as a second wheat. Moderate resistance to Fusarium Ear Blight but more prone to sprouting than other varieties. Resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

BREEDER: RAGT SEEDS, UK | PARENTAGE: C4148 X HURRICANE

✚ High yields and excellent drilling date flexibility

✚ Stiff straw and reasonable Septoria tritici resistance

The highest yielding Group 1 wheat and remained Agrii’s third biggest selling variety nationally. Good baking quality with excellent physical grain characteristics and a high Hagberg Falling Number. Fully approved for both domestic markets and export as a ukp wheat.

Its best performance is on medium and heavier soil and it is suitable for all regions of the UK except for areas with a high sterility risk. It builds protein at a similar rate to Skyfall and faster than both KWS Siskin and KWS Extase. Suitable for drilling from the last week of September or later drill through to the end of January. Moderate height, reasonably stiff straw (6 untreated, 7 treated), mid-maturity (0) and moderately competitive against grassweeds.

It has an average disease package with decent scores against Septoria tritici (5.6) and Brown Rust (6.5) but Yellow Rust resistance (3.7) has dropped significantly (Agrii data). It has also shown good second wheat performance but is susceptible to Fusarium Ear Blight and Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

✚ High yields and excellent grain quality

✚ Good all-round disease package and good second wheat choice

MV FREDERICIA Bread-Type (Not Nabim Listed)

BREEDER: MARTONVÁSÁR, HUNGARY | UK AGENT: ANGUS WHEAT CONSULTANTS LTD PARENTAGE: MV ZELMA X ELVISS

Bold grain and strong dough characteristics attracted the interest of a regional miller for wholemeal flour. Premiums, based on protein content, can be significantly higher than those from standard bread-making types. This combined with its late-drill suitability make it an ideal choice after potatoes and sugar beet or in high grassweed situations. Contracts are available in East Anglia and the East Midlands.

Ideal for late drilling, and for its best performance drill from mid-October through to the end of December. Fast developing in autumn and spring and is very competitive against grassweeds. Good overall foliar disease resistance with a rating of 8.0 for Yellow Rust, 5.8 for Brown Rust and 5.1 for Septoria tritici.

Requires a robust PGR programme, especially in more fertile situations. It has very early maturity (-4), making it earlier than Cordiale and an ideal entry crop for oilseed rape.

✚ Early maturing high-quality bread-making wheat from Hungary

✚ Very competitive on grassweeds and grown on contract

AXIOMA Bread-Type (Not Nabim Listed)

BREEDER: SECOBRA, GERMANY | UK AGENT: AGRII PARENTAGE: IMPRESSION X LINE 29-94-8

A German E-wheat suitable for the late-drill slot with stronger flour quality than from Mv Fredericia. While Axioma does not have the same yield potential as UK-bred wheats, the high premiums that it attracts under contract can easily offset the yield lag.

An ideal choice for drilling after potatoes, sugar beet or where drilling is intentionally delayed reducing Blackgrass pressure. Drill from mid-October through to the end of December. Competitive against grassweeds because of its vigorous growth habit in the spring.

Good resistance against Yellow Rust (8.5), Brown Rust (5.2) and Septoria tritici (6.6). Like most German E-wheats it requires a robust PGR programme and has moderately early maturity (-2).

✚ A German E-wheat for high protein super-strong flour

✚ Competitive on grassweeds and grown on contract

PORT &

FEED

KWS EXTASEGroup 2, Milling or Feed

Consistently high yielding in Agrii trials over the past three years (101%) with the highest untreated yield of any variety tested (90%). A Group 2 bread and provisional export wheat that has also attracted interest as a feed wheat, due to its outstanding Septoria resistance, stiff straw and bold grain (76.0 kg/hl).

Suitable for all regions of the UK except areas of high sterility risk. Consistent across soil types with good performance on lighter soils. A fast-developing variety best drilled from the last week of September through to the end of December but it can be drilled to the end of January, where necessary. Average second wheat performance and average competitiveness against grassweeds.

Tall straw with average stiffness (6 untreated, 6 treated) and early maturity (-1). Excellent disease resistance in Agrii trials for Septoria tritici (7.4), Yellow Rust (8.4) and Brown Rust (6.4). The juvenile stage of Yellow Rust may be seen before GS32 and Eyespot will need attention in a second wheat situation. Monitor and spray as appropriate for Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

BREEDER: KWS UK | PARENTAGE: BOISSEAU X SOLHEIO

✚ High yields and excellent grain quality

✚ Stiff straw and outstanding Septoria tritici resistance

Agrii’s fourth biggest selling variety in 2019. It continues to deliver top feed-level yields with Group 2 bread-making quality, decent Hagberg Falling Number and high specific weight. It is very difficult to achieve a protein level above 12.5% so it is frequently used for lower-grade milling flours or exported under ukp.

It is consistent across soil types and all regions up to Yorkshire, but probably no further North. It is a vigorous variety with a relatively fast speed of development. Ideal for drilling from the last week of September onwards through to the end of January. It is very competitive against grassweeds.

It has a sensible straw length but moderate standing (5 untreated, 6 treated) so it needs a robust PGR programme. Average second wheat performance and medium maturity (+1). Good resistance against Septoria tritici (6.4) and Yellow Rust (9.0) but weak against Brown Rust (4.2) and susceptible to Fusarium Ear Blight. It will serve as a good diversification partner for Yellow Rust. It is not resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

✚ Consistent high-output wheat with additional market opportunities

✚ Very competitive against grassweeds and excellent disease resistance

ELICIT Group 3, Biscuit, Distilling & uks Export

BREEDER: ELSOMS SEEDS | PARENTAGE: CASSIUS X VISCOUNT

Agrii’s number one biscuit variety in 2019 with treated yields very similar to KWS Barrel but with a much-improved agronomic package. Recommended for domestic biscuit use, export under uks and rated ‘good’ for distilling.

Suitable for all areas of the country, it performs well on both heavy and lighter soils and is an average second wheat. Best drilled from the last week of September through to the end of October and is not suitable for early or very late drilling. It has also proven to be very competitive against grassweeds. It has medium length straw which is decently stiff (7 untreated, 7 treated) and medium maturity (+1).

Elicit has much better disease resistance than both KWS Barrel and KWS Basset with Septoria tritici (5.0), Brown Rust (5.0) and Yellow Rust (7.8). While it is moderately susceptible to Fusarium Ear Blight this is no different to KWS Barrel, KWS Basset or Zulu. It is resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

✚ High yielding biscuit wheat with a good agronomic package

✚ Highly competitive against grassweeds

KWS FIREFLY Group 3, Biscuit

BREEDER: KWS UK | PARENTAGE: COUGAR X KWS ROWAN

The highest treated (101%) and untreated (83%) yields for a biscuit wheat in Agrii trials but lower specific weight (73.7 kg/hl). Fully recommended for domestic markets and provisional uks for export but it is unsuitable for distilling.

More suited to England and Wales with its performance dropping off further North. Consistent across soil types and suitable for lighter land. Best grown as a first

wheat as its second wheat performance has been poor. Relatively fast speed of development and it can be drilled successfully from the last week of September through to the end of December and beyond. It has average competitiveness against grassweeds.

It has relatively short, stiff straw (7 untreated, 8 treated) and medium maturity (0), based on Agrii results. Disease resistance is reasonably good against Septoria tritici (5.8) and Yellow Rust (7.6) but it shows a weakness to Brown Rust (3.0) and Fusarium Ear Blight. It is resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

✚ Highest yielding biscuit wheat

✚ Short stiff straw and reasonably good disease profile

LG SKYSCRAPERSoft Feed & Distilling

High treated (104%) and untreated (84%) yields and specific weight (74.7.2 kg/hl) in Agrii trials over the past three years and is the joint-highest yielding wheat on the UK Recommended List. Rated ‘Medium’ for distilling but it is unsuitable for export.

Suitable for all regions of the UK including areas of high sterility risk. Consistent across soil types including lighter soils and very high yielding as a second wheat even though it is best grown as a first wheat. Proven to be one of the most consistent varieties over the past four years, probably due to its taller straw. Best drilled from the start of October through to the end of December or even through to the end of January.

A high tillering variety, fast to grow away in the spring and very competitive against grassweeds. It is one of the tallest varieties but relatively weak (treated 4, untreated 6) so it requires a robust PGR programme. Medium maturity (+1).

Agrii trials show it to have average Septoria tritici (4.6) and Brown Rust (3.8) but good Yellow Rust (8.2) ratings. It is resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

✚ Highest yielding wheat on the UK Recommended List

✚ Feed wheat rated ‘Medium’ for distilling

High treated (101%) and untreated (80%) yields and high specific weight (75.7 kg/hl) in Agrii trials over the past two years. It has the highest HFN (288s) of any soft wheat on the UK Recommended List and very good sprouting resistance. Rated ‘Medium’ for distilling but is not approved for uks export.Suitable for all regions of the UK including areas of high sterility risk. Best performance on medium or heavy soils and best grown as a first wheat as its second wheat performance is relatively poor. More affected by the drought in 2018 than LG Skyscraper, in spite of having similar tall straw. Best drilled from early October through to the end of December but it has been sown successfully through into February. A fast-developing variety but trials suggest that it only has average competitiveness against grassweeds. One of the tallest varieties and, while not the stiffest (untreated 6, treated 7), it is stiffer than LG Skyscraper. Similar mid-maturity (+1) and it is unlikely to sprout. Good overall disease resistance with Yellow Rust (6.8), Septoria tritici (5.4) and Brown Rust (3.8) based on Agrii ratings. Moderately susceptible to Fusarium Ear Blight but resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

ELATION Group 4, Soft Feed, Distilling & uks Export

BREEDER: ELSOMS SEEDS | PARENTAGE: CASSIUS X VISCOUNT

A distilling variety with excellent physical grain characteristics and a sister line to Elicit sharing the same parents. Ideally suited to the North and Scotland but can be grown elsewhere as a soft feed or for uks export.

Suitable for all soil types with very good performance on lighter soils. Relatively fast speed of development and very competitive against grassweeds. Best drilled in the main drilling window and not suited to early or very late drilling. Short, stiff straw (untreated 8, treated 8), and is a good second wheat choice. Medium maturity (+1).

Good resistance to Yellow Rust (8.0) but weak against Septoria tritici (4.0) and Brown Rust (4.1). It is moderately susceptible to Fusarium Ear Blight but resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

✚ High yielding soft wheat rated ‘Good’ for distilling

✚ Highly competitive against grassweeds and a good second wheat

KWS JACKAL Group 4, Soft Feed & Distilling

BREEDER: KWS UK | PARENTAGE: KWS W177 X KWS SANTIAGO

A northern variety for feed and rated ‘Medium’ for distilling but unsuitable for uks export. It has produced average yields (99%) in a limited number of northern Agrii trials. Official trials suggest that is has average quality (HFN 180s) and specific weight 75.6 kg/hl.

Suitable across all soil types including light and heavy soils and it can be grown in areas of high sterility risk. It has average competitiveness against grassweeds and performs relatively well as a second wheat. Medium straw height but Agrii trials have shown that it is more prone to lodging (untreated 5, treated 5) than the official ratings of 7s suggests. Medium-late maturity (+3).

Disease resistance is average with Agrii ratings for Yellow Rust (7.6), Brown Rust (4.0) and Septoria tritici (3.5). It is moderately susceptible to Fusarium Ear Blight but resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

RGT SAKI NEWSoft Feed

A new soft feed wheat addition to the UK Recommended List with similar yields to Skyscraper. Tested by Agrii over the past two years, it gave consistently high treated (102%) and untreated (87%) yields but a relatively low specific weight (73.2 kg/hl). It is unsuitable for distilling or export under uks.

It is suited to all regions of the UK, although it should not be grown in areas of high sterility risk until more information is available. It can be grown on both heavy and light soils and it is an average-performing second wheat. Best drilled from the last week of September through to the end of December where it has been one of the highest yielding late-drill varieties in official trials (107%).

It produces medium height straw with average standing ability (5 untreated, 6 treated) so a robust PGR programme is recommended. Medium-late maturity (+3) with only moderate sprouting resistance and its competitiveness against grassweed is still being evaluated. RGT Saki has good disease resistance against Yellow Rust (9.0) and Septoria tritici (6.2) but only average resistance against Brown Rust (4.9) in Agrii trials. It is resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

RD FEED

A short, stiff and early variety that KWS has positioned as a Cordiale and Grafton replacement for growers in the Yorkshire and Humber region. Performed well in Agrii trials in 2019 with high treated (102%) and untreated (81%) yields and an average specific weight (74.4 kg/hl). It is worth consideration even though it didn’t make it on to the UK Recommended List.

Best grown as a first wheat on heavy land. While positioned as a northern variety by KWS it can be grown more widely, although not in areas of high sterility risk until more information is available. It is a fast-developing variety, so drill from the last week of September unless further north (i.e. is not a true Grafton-type). Its late drill performance and grassweed competitiveness are still being evaluated.

It has short and very stiff straw (untreated 8, treated 9) and ideally suited to high fertility or mixed farming situations. Early maturity (-2) is another useful characteristic. Disease resistance shows it to have good Yellow Rust (9.0) resistance, average Septoria tritici (5.5) but poor Brown Rust (3.2) resistance, so this needs to be managed. It is not resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

BREEDER: RAGT SEEDS, UK | PARENTAGE: KIELDER X RELAY

A high input, high output variety with very high treated (104%) and untreated (76%) yields and bold grain (77.2 kg/hl) in Agrii trials in 2019. It is also the joint-highest yielding feed wheat on the UK Recommended List with Skyscraper-level yields.

Suitable for all regions of the UK although high sterility risk areas are best avoided until more information is available. Best drilled from the last week of September and initial indications suggest that it is ideal for late-drilling, with the highest yields of any variety in official trials (110%). It performs well across all soil types with particularly good performance on lighter soils. Average second wheat performance and medium-late maturity (+3).

It has very tall straw of average stiffness (untreated 6, treated 6) so a robust PGR programme is recommended. Its grassweed competitiveness is still being evaluated at Stow Longa.

Disease resistance shows it to have good Septoria tritici (7.4) resistance but weaker Yellow Rust (4.0) and Brown Rust (4.4) than its official ratings suggest, so these need to be monitored carefully. It is resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

✚ Very high yielding feed wheat

✚ Excellent light land performance

High treated (101%) and untreated (82%) yields with an average specific weight (74.4 kg/hl) in Agrii trials. It is worth consideration even though it didn’t make it on to the UK Recommended List.

Suitable for all regions except areas of high sterility risk until more information is available. It can be grown across a range of soil types. It is best grown from early October through to the end of the month as its late drill performance hasn’t been fully evaluated. It performs well as a second wheat.

Its competitiveness against Blackgrass is still under evaluation so best grown in lower pressure situations or drilled later until further information is available. With average straw strength (6 untreated, 6 treated) a routine PGR programme is recommended, especially in more fertile situations. Medium-late maturity (+3).

Disease resistance is good for Yellow Rust (7.5) and Septoria tritici (5.8) but Mildew (4.9) and, like many other varieties, Brown Rust (4.4) needs watching carefully. It is resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

RGT WOLVERINE NEWGroup 4, Hard Feed – Candidate

RGT Wolverine is the first variety with tolerance to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) in wheat. It performed well in Agrii trials in 2019 with the highest yields (107%) of any variety tested and good grain quality (76.5 kg/hl). In official trials it also showed high untreated yields (81%).

It has shown consistent performance across all regions of the UK but avoid areas of high sterility risk until more information is available. Based on information to date it is best drilled in the main drilling window and as a first wheat. It is relatively tall with average lodging resistance (untreated 6, treated 6) so use a robust PGR programme, especially in more fertile situations.

Medium-late maturity (+3) and the competitiveness against grassweed is still being evaluated. RGT Wolverine has good disease resistance against Yellow Rust (5.8), Septoria tritici (5.8) and Brown Rust (8.2), but in spite of this it showed a big response for fungicides in Agrii trials. It appears to be relatively weak against Eyespot and it is not resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

GRAHAM Group 4, Hard Feed

BREEDER: SYNGENTA UK LTD | PARENTAGE: EXPERT X PREMIO

A very high output hard feed wheat and Agrii’s biggest selling wheat variety. High treated (103%) and untreated (87%) yields that can be attributed to its good disease resistance and bold grain (75.1 kg/hl). More suited for East and West regions with yield tailing off in the North and best not grown in Scotland or other areas of high sterility risk. It prefers heavier soils and it should always be grown as a first wheat as its second wheat performance is relatively poor.

Graham can multi-task across the drilling window. It has a relatively slow speed of development in the autumn and ideal for early drilling, yet moves relatively quickly in the spring. It has a very prostrate autumn growth habit with medium to high tillering capacity so seed rates can be reduced. Agrii late-drill trials show that it continues to yield well through to end of January. Average competitiveness against grassweeds.

Moderately tall, very stiff (6 untreated, 7 treated) and early to mature (-1). Yellow Rust (8.0), Brown Rust (4.0) and very good Septoria tritici (7.0) and moderate resistance to Fusarium Ear Blight makes Graham a strong contender particularly for the West. It is not resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

GLEAMGroup 4, Hard Feed

One of the highest yielding varieties in Agrii trials (104%) over three years and good untreated yields too (86%). Concerns over its longer-term disease resilience but in the meantime its performance continues to be strong and it delivers reasonable physical grain quality (74.8 kg/hl).

Suitable for all regions of the UK and all soils including light soils. Best drilled from early October onwards, through to the end of December and it is a good second wheat too. It moves quite slowly in the spring which hampers its ability to compete against grassweeds, so in reality drill in fields with low-risk of grassweeds or drill later. Medium height and average stiffness (6 untreated, 6 treated) so it will need a full PGR programme and on the early side (0).

Good all-round disease resistance is holding for Yellow Rust (5.7), Brown Rust (5.9) and Septoria tritici (6.4) but appears more susceptible to Fusarium Ear Blight than its official rating suggests. It is resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

BREEDER: SYNGENTA UK LTD | PARENTAGE: KIELDER X HEREFORD

✚ Consistent high yields and decent grain quality

✚ Good disease resistance and suitable for later drilling

Widely accepted as the JB Diego replacement with very bold grain and improved disease resistance. Excellent grain quality with huge HFN (321s) and specific weight (78.8 kg/hl), which is the highest of any variety in Agrii trials or on the Recommended List.

Suitable for all soil types and regions and, like JB Diego, it is a very stable variety. It is best drilled from mid-September onwards although it can be drilled from the end of the first week of September further north. It has performed well in Agrii late drilled trials through to the end of December. Best grown as a first wheat as its second wheat performance has been somewhat variable. Medium to high tillering capacity with average competitiveness against grassweeds and moderately late maturity (+3).

Straw of moderate height and stiff (8 untreated, 9 treated), plus a good disease profile for Yellow Rust (9.0), and Septoria tritici (6.0) but Brown Rust (3.9) needs watching carefully. Moderate resistance to Fusarium Ear Blight but not resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

RGT GRAVITY Group 4, Hard Feed

BREEDER: RAGT SEEDS, UK | PARENTAGE: (SCOUT X OAKLEY) X KWS SANTIAGO

A classic KWS barn-busting variety with very high yield (104%), recommended for the East and West regions. A ‘Santiago’-type with lots of yield but its grain quality is only average (74.8 kg/hl).

Performs well on both heavy and light soils, suitable for October drilling through to the end of December but it can perform through to the end of January. It is also a very respectable second wheat. A medium tillering variety with only average competitiveness against grassweeds so best drilled later wherever risk is moderate or high.

Medium height but with relatively weak straw (4 untreated, 5 treated), so a robust PGR programme must be considered. Maturity is medium-late (+2).

Weak on Septoria tritici (4.9), very susceptible to Yellow Rust (3.0) and susceptible to Fusarium Ear Blight. Its Brown Rust (7.4) resistance appears better than last year (4.2) so in practice this disease needs watching too. Careful management is required, and input costs will be relatively high. It is resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

✚ High input/high output ‘Santiago’-type

✚ Good second wheat and late-drill performance

Very high treated yields (103%) but average untreated yields (74%) and it needs to be placed in the right drilling slot to maximise its yield potential. Its physical grain quality (74.4 kg/hl) has been average in Agrii trials over the past three years.

It performs well on both heavy and lighter soils with decent second wheat performance. Like KWS Kerrin it has shown only average grassweed competitiveness, so use in low grassweed situations or delay drilling to reduce weed pressure. Best drilled in October through to the end of December. Relatively tall with average standing (4 untreated, 5 treated), so it requires a robust PGR programme. It has medium maturity (+1).

Disease scores are not that exciting, Yellow Rust (7.4), Brown Rust (4.0), Septoria tritici (4.7), Mildew (4.4), poor Eyespot resistance and moderately susceptible to Fusarium Ear Blight. Like Gleam and KWS Kerrin it requires good management and relatively high inputs for it to perform optimally.

It is resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

DUNSTONGroup 4, Hard Feed

Mid-ranking in terms of yields (100%) and grain quality (75 kg/hl). Very consistent over the past six years but in 2019 its resistance to Yellow Rust has reduced significantly and its untreated yield has fallen (now 73%).

Performs well across soil types with good results on light soils. Reasonable second wheat performance helped by the Pch1 Eyespot resistance. Suitable for drilling from mid-September through to the end of December. It has medium tillering capacity so keep seed rates up but, in spite of this, it remains very competitive against grassweeds. Relatively tall with decent stiff straw (6 untreated, 7 treated) and mid-late maturity (+2).

Good resistance to Septoria tritici (6.7), average Brown Rust (5.2) and Mildew (5.1) and pay attention to Yellow Rust (2.4) which requires a robust programme to control it. It is susceptible to Fusarium Ear Blight and not resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

✚ Consistent high yields with reasonable grain quality

✚ Very competitive against grassweeds and reasonable second wheat

A hard feed wheat with consistently high yields (101%), bold grain (76.5 kg/hl) and relatively early maturity (+1). It has given very consistent performance over the past seven years.

Suitable across all regions of the UK and all soil types with particularly good results on lighter soils and drought conditions. Best drilled from late September and performs well when drilled late. Consistent as a second wheat but Eyespot will need attention. Average competitiveness against grassweeds.

Medium height with relatively stiff straw in most situations but use a good PGR programme under more fertile conditions. Relatively early to mature. Septoria tritici is its main weakness (3.5) and Brown Rust is starting to be more evident (4.6) but retains excellent Yellow Rust (8.9) and Mildew (6.6) resistance. It is not resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

LATE AUTUMN & SPRING WHEAT

KWS COCHISEGroup 2, Spring Wheat

The highest yielding spring wheat on the Recommended List and 12% higher yielding than Mulika. Bold grain, tall, stiff straw and reasonable disease resistance although it is far more susceptible to Yellow Rust than its official rating suggests. Resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

BREEDER: KWS UK

KWS CHILHAMGroup 2, Spring Wheat

A new spring wheat with good all-round disease profile. One of the highest yielding varieties in the late autumn and second highest when drilled in the spring. Good physical grain quality and baking performance. A vigorous and competitive growth habit against grassweeds. Resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge.

BREEDER: KWS UK

With difficult conditions in autumn 2019 drilling was either delayed until later in the year or into the spring. The challenge of Blackgrass has also shifted wheat drilling later so there is significant interest in how varieties perform in the late drilling slot.

The highest yields have come from KWS Firefly, LG Spotlight, KWS Kerrin, Graham and RGT Gravity in Agrii trials over the past two years. KWS Zyatt, Skyfall, KWS Extase and KWS Siskin offer additional premium opportunities for milling. Skyfall has the benefit of a longer drilling window through to early March and appears less susceptible to Ergot than true spring wheats.

German E-wheats and other continental wheats are being grown on contract in this late drill slot. Agrii trials results on Mv Fredericia (Hungarian) and Axioma (German) suggest that while they do not have the same yield potential as UK-bred wheats, the high premiums that they attract can easily offset the yield lag.

Spring wheats can also be drilled in late autumn. KWS Cochise and KWS Chilham are two new Group 2 spring wheat varieties. Trials over the past three years suggest that these can yield at the level of true winter types, although there is evidence to suggest that they are best suited to heavier soil and their yields can drop away on lighter or drought prone soils.

CEREALS SEED TREATMENTS FOR AUTUMN 2020NEW: ZAX (ZINC) for wheat, barley and oatsZinc is an essential micronutrient. Harvested cereal grain and oat straw remove significant quantities of zinc from the soil. Zax delivers 450 g/tonne of readily available Zinc. It has been tested by Agrii for the past five years and is an exclusive product.

NEW: i-MAN (MANGANESE)for wheat, barley, oats and ryei-Man applies manganese (Mn) at 450 g/tonne and delivers 20% more manganese than New Manganese Solution. It both penetrates the seed coat and is taken up by roots leading to increased manganese uptake by the plant. It also contains a unique collating agent which protects Mn from being locked up by the soil.

NEW: AGNITION (COPPER) for wheat, barley and oatsCopper deficiency is widespread across Scotland and elsewhere across the UK. LATITUDE (SILTHIOFAM) for wheat and winter barleyThe only product available for Take-all control in cereals. It typically recovers half of the yield lost to the disease and improves specific weight in many situations. Optimum performance comes from mid-October drillings but significant yield responses have been seen from late-November drilling too. It must be co-applied with a basic seed treatment against the seed and soil-borne diseases.

SIGNAL (CYPERMETHRIN) for winter wheat and barleyFollowing the withdrawal of Deter and Austral Plus, Signal is the only remaining product for controlling wireworm and reducing the impact of wheat bulb fly. Widely compatible with other treatments.

Always handle treated seed with caution and thought for the environment and always wear the appropriate personal protective equipment. Avoid pouring the seed from height and ensure all seed is covered by soil and spillages are cleared away.

GRAIN MARKETINGMAXIMISING RETURNSIn order to support our farmer customers and maximise returns through grain sales as well as agronomy, Agrii have well established partnerships with two leading grain marketing companies.

For a more personalised approach to your crop marketing make sure you talk to one of our agronomists or our Crop Marketing Department.

SCOTGRAINIn Scotland, Agrii have enjoyed a long term relationship with Scotgrain Agriculture Ltd, the grain procurement division of Baird’s Malt Ltd, which is itself owned by the worldwide traders GrainCorp.

The market in Scotland is significantly different from that in the rest of the UK. Having a partner who understands

and is integrated into that market is essential to get the best returns for our farmer suppliers.

The Agrii iFarm network allows us to select varieties best suited to the challenging Scottish climate and quality data from Scotgrain allows us to focus on those lines suited to the distilling and feed industries.

GB SEEDSGB Seeds are the specialist grain marketing division of Agrii, based in Eastern England, working with a range of end users throughout the UK supplying specialist seeds and grains.

Key products currently include winter and spring Naked Oats, Tiffany LVC Beans, spring Linseed, Maple Peas, Yellow Peas, and Blue Peas. All these products are offered on competitive buyback terms.

With margins and rotations being challenged on-farm these specialist crops allow growers to capture both economic and environmental benefit.

Agrii are invested in these crops, developing R&D support around them to better enable our agronomists in dealing with these products, and to bringing new innovative crops to the market.

GLENCORE In England and Wales, Agrii works in partnership with Glencore Agriculture, a worldwide trader and consumer of cereals, pulses and oilseeds.

Glencore have port and storage facilities throughout England and strategic links with most feed and milling consumers in all regions.

Agrii’s extensive research in variety selection and crop husbandry coupled

with Glencore’s detailed knowledge of the market, gives growers a selection of low risk, high output crop options. Marketing choices include buy-back contracts, pool marketing or movement at harvest with an option to price later.

Growers can also use the Grainman sales and account management system to obtain prices and accept bids, view samples and monitor grain movements and payments.

Agrii Yea

rbook 20/21

39

A COMPLETE MARKETING PACKAGEWorking with our partners, Agrii are able to offer a range of buy-backs covering milling wheat, malting barley, oats, oilseed rape and beans.

Pool marketing options are available on wheat and oilseed rape, and our grain partners have different pricing mechanisms that can be tailored to your business and location. This will include harvest movement options on most crops and particularly for crops like oilseed rape that have a high proportion moving at harvest.

Specialist contracts are available on specific oilseed crops like HOLL and HEAR oilseed rape. The HOLL market continues to be of interest due to its high stability in commercial high temperature frying conditions. HOLL crops need to be stored separately from normal ’00’. HEAR oilseed rape is high in Erucic Acid so growers should not grow ’00’ varieties on the same farm and, because of the risk of volunteers in subsequent years, growers tend to stick with HEAR varieties for a number of years.

High value Naked Oat buy-backs are available via GB Seeds, with terms structured to reward storage both from the carry in the wheat price and the increased premium. The demand for Naked Oats is high and increasing. Uses include human consumption, broiler rations, horse feed and wild bird food.

MANAGING STORAGE REQUIREMENTSMore farmers are growing different crop types and this inevitably puts pressure on storage. Agrii can advise on which crops are likely to appreciate in store and which are best to move at harvest. Crops can also be moved to store for specialist cleaning and drying and marketed later, or if the wheat is at contract specification, moved direct to consumption but with the ability to price later when the market may be stronger.

MANAGING CASH-FLOWIn order to avoid having to sell at a low price to generate cash, Agrii have mechanisms which can separate movement from pricing, either cash and carry deals (T’s and C’s apply), virtual storage or using options.

CONDITIONING YOUR CROP IN STOREAgrii are able to advise on optimum storage temperatures and moistures and use of storage chemicals to keep the crop stable in the barn. Should the harvest be compromised by admixture such as Ergot, or suffer from high screenings, the Agrii fleet of grain cleaners, equipped with colour sorters and high capacity grain cleaning, can be a cost effective way of improving grain quality.

SY KINGSBARN Hybrid Barley, 6-Row Feed

BREEDER: SYNGENTA UK LTD

Agrii’s preferred hybrid barley variety. While not as big and bulky as Bazooka, it offers a step up in yield performance for those looking to change out of conventional barley. Consistently high yields over the past 3 years (106%) with high untreated yields (80%) and good specific weight (65.7 kg/hl).

It performs consistently well across all regions and soil types and it is the highest yielding variety on heavy land (109%) in official trials. High-tillering capacity with a semi-prostrate growth habit, it is very competitive against Blackgrass. Drill from 20th September through to the end of October and, like the other hybrids, it is best used to maintain already low weed populations. It is the shortest and stiffest of any of the hybrids and has medium-early maturity.

Good all-round disease resistance against Mildew (6), Brown Rust (6) and Net Blotch (5) in Agrii trials with an official rating of 6 for Rhynchosporium. Resistant to Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus.

✚ Very high yields with slightly less bulk

✚ Improved standing and disease resistance

A feed-type with a very high treated (106%) and an average untreated (73%) yield and high specific weight (66.8 kg/hl) in Agrii trials in 2019. It also showed the lowest screening losses of any six-row type in official trials. Ideal for use on lower potential sites, lighter soils, situations where grassweeds are a problem and increasingly used for Anaerobic Digestion.

Very stable performance across all regions and soil types. Best drilled from late September through to mid-October. While very competitive against grassweeds, Agrii trials at Stow Longa suggest that it should be used to maintain already low weed populations. The reason for this is simply that the drilling date cannot be reliably delayed beyond October without risking yield loss.

Slightly shorter than Bazooka but Agrii trials show it to be more prone to lodging even when treated with a robust PGR programme. Official trials suggest it has early maturity (-1) but this is still being evaluated. Good disease resistance with Mildew (7) and Net Blotch (7) but relatively weak on Brown Rust (4), and Rhynchosporium is still being assessed in Agrii trials. Resistant to Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus.

BAZOOKAHybrid Barley, 6-Row Feed

The most widely grown hybrid barley variety on the Recommended List. It has performed consistently well in Agrii trials over the past 3 years with high treated (107%) and average untreated (75%) yields and a good specific weight (66.3 kg/hl).

Suitable for all regions of the UK and soil types. Drill from 20th September through to the end of October. Use low seed rates to establish 180 plants/m2 to maximise specific weight and, as with all hybrids, bring nitrogen use forward (30% at GS25, 50% at GS30/31, 20% at GS32/37) to boost early vigour and increase tillering, rooting and grain numbers. A semi erect-type with high tillering capacity, very high vigour and very competitive against grassweeds. Medium-late maturity.

Relatively tall (114 cm) with a moderate risk of lodging even when treated with a full PGR programme. Good all-round disease resistance against Mildew (6), Brown Rust (5) and Net Blotch (7) in Agrii trials, and Rhychosporium (6) in official trials. Resistant to Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus.

BREEDER: SYNGENTA UK LTD

✚ Very high yields and good physical grain quality

✚ Very competitive against grassweeds

A new addition to the Recommended List and a relatively high yielding two-row type in Agrii trials in 2019 (101%) with high untreated yields (82%) and good specific weight (67.3 kg/hl). Official trials suggest that while it has bold grain it has relatively high screening losses, like KWS Glacier.

Suitable for all regions and soil types with its best performance in the East (106%) and on heavier soils (106%). Relatively tall (90 cm) but responds well to PGR (84 cm) and can be considered a lower lodging risk variety when treated with a PGR programme. Its competitiveness against Blackgrass is being evaluated at Stow Longa. Medium-late maturity.

Agrii trials demonstrate good resistance to Mildew (6) and Net Blotch (5) but its Brown Rust (3) is significantly weaker that the official rating. The official Rhynchosporium rating is 6. Resistant to Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus.

Agrii’s biggest selling two-row barley. Very high treated (103%) and untreated (78%) yields and very bold grain (69.6 kg/hl) in Agrii trials over the past three years. It has consistently achieved higher specific weights than KWS Cassia (68.4 kg/hl) over the same period. Its excellent yield, grain quality and disease profile are attracting growers away from all existing two-row varieties.

Suitable for all regions and soils with particular appeal to KWS Cassia growers in the West and North who have come to expect big bold grain. Average competitiveness against Blackgrass but similar to KWS Orwell, Cassia and Tower.

Average height (85 cm treated, 88 cm untreated) and very stiff (8) with medium- late maturity.

Good resistance to Brown Rust (5) and Net Blotch (7) but susceptible to Mildew (3, like KWS Orwell). Resistant to Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus.

✚ Very high output feed barley with outstanding bold grain

✚ Good all-round disease resistance and stiff straw

Continues to meet the requirements of the feed barley grower with its combination of high grain yield (100%), good all-round disease resistance and good grain quality (66.4 kg/hl). It has an official recommendation for the West but it performs equally well in other regions. Some evidence to suggest that its best performance is on medium to heavier soils and it is the only two-row feed that is suitable for drilling from early-September onwards. Very competitive against grassweeds and, like Belfry and Bazooka, it is best used to maintain already-low weed populations.

It is tall (91 cm) but has very stiff straw (8) and medium-early maturity. This, combined with good disease resistance, continues to attract growers as a very straightforward variety to grow.

It has good resistance to Mildew (5) and Net Blotch (5) but more susceptible to Brown Rust (3) than its official rating. It has an official rating against Rhynchosporium of 6. Resistant to the commonly occurring strains of Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus.

Mid-ranking in yield (102%) and average specific weight (66.2 kg/hl) in Agrii trials over the past three years but its performance was below average in 2019 (95%). Over the past three years it has effectively replaced KWS Glacier and KWS Tower as the mainstay two-row feed variety.

Suitable for all regions and soil types. Relatively short straw (86 cm) and excellent stem stiffness (8). Less competitive against grassweeds compared with California or hybrids but similar to the other two-row feed varieties. Medium-late maturity.

Reasonable disease resistance against Rhychosporium (6, official), Net Blotch (6) and Brown Rust (7) but relatively weak on Mildew (3) so the latter needs monitoring and spraying for. Resistant to Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus.

WINTER OATS

MASCANIStill the market leading variety across the UK, showing its longevity in holding grain quality across multiple years and seasons. With good specific weight, best kernel content and best performance in the mill it is a variety that end-users request. With this need in the market, good value contracts will be available.

Mascani has decent standing ability and acceptable maturity. Disease resistance is slightly better than others on the list, in particular on Crown Rust.

BREEDER: INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND RURAL SCIENCES UK AGENT: SENOVA

DALGUISEYielding in the middle of the pack on UK average but with higher yields further north and into Scotland, this is a line to consider in those regions. Good specific weight and decent kernel content mean that this variety has a place in the market.

Dalguise is early maturing with long and slightly weak straw. It is susceptible to Mildew and Crown Rust, but all can be managed through a standard agronomic programme.

BREEDER: INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND RURAL SCIENCES UK AGENT: SENOVA

GERALDAverage UK yield is a bit behind the rest now but with increasing yields further north and into Scotland. It has moderate grain characteristics and good winter hardiness. This is a consistent performer on-farm and for that it is still well liked and requested.

Gerald is late to mature and susceptible to Mildew, but all can be managed through a standard agronomic programme.

BREEDER: INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND RURAL SCIENCES UK AGENT: SENOVA

Oats are considered as a white straw break crop and as such can be used as a Take-all break. They can typically tolerate a pH down to 5.3, so are a very useful alternative to winter barley and can outyield it.

Best practice is to not grow oats more than one year in four to reduce the potential incidence of Oat Mosaic Virus and Stem Eelworm.

To obtain maximum value of the crop, growing on a milling contract is crucial.

Please talk with your local Agrii or Glencore representative on availability of milling oat contracts.

WINTER NAKED OATS

GRAFTONGrafton is an older Naked Oat variety, yet is very consistent on-farm and so remains popular with growers. It is taller with moderate straw strength and so requires a PGR programme – much like most oats.Grafton is early to mature with good specific weight and low screenings. It is susceptible to Mildew and average for Crown Rust, so a decent agronomic package will ensure good performance on-farm.

BREEDER: INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND RURAL SCIENCES UK AGENT: SENOVA

FUSIONFusion has established itself as a high yielding semi-dwarf Naked Oat variety. Fusion has shown on-farm to have the shortest and stiffest straw, and so does not require a PGR programme. Due to this it can be grown in more challenging conditions; particularly where lodging is a high risk.Fusion is susceptible to both Mildew and Crown Rust so a robust programme is recommended. Grain characteristics have been acceptable for end-users. Past growers have found favour in this variety and have requested it again.

BREEDER: INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND RURAL SCIENCES UK AGENT: SENOVA

PELOTON NEWPeloton is a new addition to the Recommended List and currently sits as the highest yielding Winter Naked Oat. It is a moderate height, stiff strawed variety whilst being slightly later than Grafton. With good specific weight and low screenings, this looks set to be accepted by end-users. Good resistances to Mildew and Crown Rust mean this should be a relatively easy variety to manage.

BREEDER: INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND RURAL SCIENCES UK AGENT: SENOVA

As the name implies, Naked Oats naturally thresh free from the husk during harvesting. This natural groat is nutrient dense with high digestible energy. This has led to demand in multiple sectors demonstrating the versatility and respect that this crop has gained. Our Naked Oats are grown on an exclusive buy-back contract and marketed through our Superioats brand with GB Seeds. Due to the demand and strong links with end-users we are able to offer Naked Oats contracts with attractive premiums.

Naked Oats can be grown in any situation where traditional husked oats are grown but do require a little more care and attention when establishing and combining – as with any added value cropping. Agrii have placed significant effort into improving the agronomic performance of this crop aimed at increasing on-farm margins whilst looking to maximise genetic potential.

For further information please speak with Skye van Heyzen at GB Seeds.

WINTER BEANS

WINTER BEANS

Winter beans offer a low growing cost compared to OSR and good cultural Blackgrass control. Crops will leave good levels of residual Nitrogen for the following cereal crop.

A wide sowing window offers opportunity to spread the workload. Crops ideally can be sown from mid-October through to December and if sown in January or February then seed rates should be adjusted upwards to allow for less branching – taking into account the breeder latest safe sowing recommendations.

Establishment of crops is split equally between sowing on top and ploughing in, conventional plough and cultivate /min-till systems.

If crops are sown to a sufficient depth (around at least 10 cm) to enable good root growth over the winter, then this increases drought tolerance later in the growing season – this is where winter beans will usually perform better than spring counterparts when under environmental pressure.

Some varieties have reasonable resistance to Ascochyta but other diseases can become an issue such as Chocolate Spot, Rust and in some years Downy Mildew.

Seed treatments are not regularly used on winter beans, however Take Off ST is available to aid establishment and early growth via improved root development, particularly in difficult conditions.

✚ Winter beans offer ease of establishment and excellent crop durability

✚ Good rotational opportunities for establishing a mid to late autumn sown crop

✚ Wide range of establishment methods can be engaged✚ Great soil structure improving capacity

INV1035Hybrid – UK Wide

Agrii’s leading hybrid over the past two years. It produces a consistently high treated gross output (105%), high untreated yields (98%) and a high oil content (45.3%) in the Agrii national trials programme.

Marketed under BASF’s ‘InVigour’ brand to emphasise their focus on this important agronomic characteristic. Indeed, InV1035 has shown outstanding autumn vigour over the past five years of testing by Agrii. It has a fast, vigorous autumn growth habit and early spring regrowth which is useful against slugs, pigeons and Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle.

Suitable for all regions of the UK and it can be grown across all soil types.

Very early maturity and carries the pod shatter resistance trait. Its high untreated yields can be attributed to its excellent disease resistance profile which is hard to beat. It has one of the best disease resistance packages available with both RLM7 Phoma/Stem Canker genetics (8.3) and an excellent Light Leaf Spot (6.7) rating. It also shows good tolerance of Verticillium Wilt.

BREEDER: BASF UK

✚ Very high treated and untreated gross output

✚ Fast vigorous growth habit in autumn and spring

It has consistently been one of the highest yielding varieties in Agrii trials every year for the past four years. High gross output (111%), high untreated yields (97%) and a high oil content (46.3%) make this a significant variety in the Agrii portfolio. Limited seed availability has delayed the widespread introduction of this variety until this season.

Suitable for all soils and all regions. Its official northern recommendation should not limit the variety and it has been proven in Agrii trials to perform across the UK especially in Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle affected areas because of its vigorous growth habit. Consistently one of the most vigorous hybrids in the autumn and quick to move away in the spring. Assessments in spring 2019 showed that it was one of the best varieties to cope with severe Flea Beetle larval infestations.

Tall (165 cm) with average lodging resistance (6.5), and medium early to flower (6) and mature (5). Outstanding disease resistance with Light Leaf Spot (7) and RLM7 Stem Canker resistance (8) giving it the equal top highest combined disease resistance on the Recommended List. Tolerant to Verticillium Wilt and contains the pod shatter resistance trait.

DK EXPEDIENT Hybrid – East, West & Yorkshire

BREEDER: BAYER CROP SCIENCE

Newly added to the UK Recommended List it is one of the highest gross output hybrids available. It has been tested by Agrii over the past two years and delivers high gross output (110%), high untreated yields (102%) and a high oil content (45.4%). There is no doubt that the trait conferring resistance to Turnip Yellows Virus is delivering a significant lift in yield of about 5%.

Suitable for all soils and regions of the UK, indeed, it was the highest yielding variety in Scotland in 2019. Ideal for later drilling with a very fast speed of development in the autumn and one of the very earliest varieties to grow away in the spring. The new N-Flex trait delivers improved nitrogen-use efficiency especially in situations where nitrogen is limiting.

Relatively tall (161 cm) with excellent lodging resistance (8), early to flower (7) and mature (6). It also has the pod shatter resistance trait.

Excellent disease profiles including a robust Light Leaf Spot rating (7) and RLM7 Stem Canker resistance (8). Consistent performance across sites suggest that it is tolerant to Verticillium Wilt but this still needs to be verified.

✚ Very high gross output hybrid

✚ Excellent disease profile including Turnip Yellow Virus (TuYV) resistance and new N-Flex trait

Introduced two years ago based on evidence from Bayer trials which showed that it was the best variety to tolerate Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle larval infestations in the spring. This was confirmed by Agrii in dedicated trials last spring which showed that this was due to its combination of fast autumn development and very early spring regrowth.

Best suited to all regions up to, and including, Yorkshire but no further north. Consistently high yielding in Agrii trials with high treated gross output (100%), good untreated yields (85%) and high oils (45.5%) over two years.

Average height (156 cm) with average lodging resistance (7), early to flower (8) and mature (6). It has the pod shatter resistance trait.

Excellent Phoma/Stem Canker resistance (8) and reasonable Light Leaf Spot resistance (5). Good tolerance of Verticillium Wilt which is particularly important in the East.

A new hybrid from the breeder of Alizze and a new candidate for the East & West region. One of the highest gross outputs (113%) in Agrii 2019 trials with a high untreated yield (102%) and high oil content (46.1%). Suitable for all soils, including fertile soils, and all regions up to, and including, Yorkshire. It has a vigorous autumn and spring growth habit and is relatively early to flower (6). Medium height (157 cm) with excellent lodging resistance (8), stem stiffness (8) and medium maturity (5). Reasonable Light Leaf Spot (7) resistance but its resistance to Phoma/Stem Canker is average (5) so this needs to be sprayed for in the autumn. Its tolerance to Verticillium Wilt will be assessed this season.

✚ Candidate for the UK Recommended List

✚ Vigorous type with excellent Light Leaf Spot resistance

The highest gross output candidate in official trials and performed well in Agrii trials last year (106%) with high untreated yields (90%) and medium-high oils (44.7%). Suitable for all regions including the far North where its excellent Light Leaf Spot resistance (7) will be valued. It is vigorous in the autumn and spring with early flowering (6) and medium maturity (5). Medium height (157 cm) with excellent lodging resistance (8) and stem stiffness (8). The only downside of the variety is its relatively low resistance to Phoma/Stem Canker (4) so this needs to be sprayed for in the autumn and spring. It also has excellent pod shatter resistance.

BREEDER: LIMAGRAIN UK

This was the first conventional variety with the Turnip Yellows Virus trait to be added to the UK Recommended List last year. It may also be the last as the breeder has decided to limit future access to this trait to their hybrids. The virus is now endemic across the UK and Agrii has shown that the trait can deliver 5% additional yield.

High gross output (101%), high untreated yields (97%) and high oil content (45.8%) in Agrii trials and one of the top two highest gross output conventional types on the UK Recommended List.

Suitable for all areas of the UK and all soils including fertile sites. It is an ideal variety for those looking to establish crops very early in the autumn. Early drilling is helped by its slower growth habit, excellent disease resistance, stiff canopy (9) and TuYV resistance.

Relatively short (147 cm) with excellent lodging resistance (8), early flowering (7) and mid-maturity (5). Outstanding disease resistance against Light Leaf Spot (7), which is now of national significance, and Phoma/Stem Canker (6). Agrii trials also showed excellent tolerance to Verticillium Wilt.

✚ Highest yielding conventional variety with the Turnip Yellows Virus (TuYV) trait

✚ Excellent disease resistance and ideal for early drilling

A new addition to the UK Recommended List this autumn. A high yielding conventional variety from the same breeder as Aspire but with a very different growth habit. Fast in the autumn and particularly early to start spring re-growth, it has an advantage over other conventional varieties by reducing the damage following larvae infestation.

High gross output (104%), high untreated yields (101%) and high oil content (46.1%) in Agrii trials and sits alongside Aspire on the UK Recommended List.

Suitable for all areas of the UK and all soils including fertile sites. Suits the main drilling window, 20th August through to the end of the first week of September, depending on soil conditions.

Taller (154 cm) than Aspire with excellent lodging resistance (8), very early flowering (8) and mid-maturity (5). Similar disease resistance to Aspire with resistance against Light Leaf Spot (7) and Phoma/Stem Canker (6). Tolerance to Verticillium Wilt has not yet been confirmed.

BREEDER: LS PLANT BREEDING, GERMANY

Anastasia is firmly established as the leading conventional variety in the North. However, its northern listing has not limited interest elsewhere as it performs well right across the country and across all soil types. Best drilled in August in the main drilling window but also suitable for early-September drilling if conditions remain favourable.

Very vigorous in the autumn, hardy over winter and appears darker green in the spring compared with most other varieties. Moderately quick to grow away in the spring to produce a moderately tall (149 cm), stiff canopy (8) with mid-flowering (6) and mid-maturity (5).

A decent disease profile with especially good Light Leaf Spot resistance (7) that still makes it the good choice for the North. In the South it is important to monitor and spray for Phoma/Stem Canker (5), especially in smaller and less well-developed crops which are more prone to the disease. Good tolerance to Verticillium Wilt.

✚ The number 1 conventional variety for the North

✚ Excellent vigour and winter hardiness

Added to the UK Recommended List last year for its outstanding yield and very high oil content. It was the highest gross output (98%) clubroot variety in the Agrii national trials network last year with high untreated yields (92%) and the highest oil content (46.1%) of any clubroot variety tested.

It has a relatively slow speed of development in the autumn and spring like Mentor. Of the clubroot tolerant varieties it is the first choice for the East and West region but probably less suited to the North because of its growth habit.

Relatively tall (154 cm) with a stiff canopy (8) and mid-maturity (5). It has good Light Leaf Spot resistance (6) but relatively weak on Phoma/Stem Canker (4), so this needs to be monitored and sprayed for.

DK PLATINIUM Clubroot Hybrid – North

BREEDER: BAYER CROP SCIENCE

A relatively new clubroot resistant variety with high yields and a vigorous growth habit in the autumn. Agrii trials have shown it to have a faster speed of growth compared with both Crome and DK Platinium. High oil content (45.2%).

Relatively early to grow away in the spring to produce a medium height canopy (153 cm) that is stiff (8). Medium flowering (5) and early maturity (6) are also ideal for the North.

A good disease resistance profile combining Light Leaf Spot (6) with RLM7 Phoma/ Stem Canker (7) resistance. It also incorporates the valuable pod shatter resistance trait which is now standard in most of the hybrids from Limagrain.

Like all the clubroot varieties, Alasco should be used as part of an integrated approach using other cultural methods of control. Recommended for use on clubroot infected land only to minimise the risk of resistance to this valuable genetic trait.

✚ Very high yields and vigorous growth habit

✚ Stiff, good disease resistance and early maturity

Dekalb’s leading clubroot variety that has performed well in independent trials and, as a result, it has been widely grown over the past three years particularly in Scotland.

Similar gross output (92%) to Crome but with a faster speed of development in the autumn which is an important consideration especially in a difficult autumn. It produces a very high seed yield with high oil content (45.3%).

Relatively tall but with good lodging resistance (8), early to flower (6) and mature (6). With average disease resistance against the two key diseases, Light Leaf Spot (5) and Phoma/Stem Canker (5) so a robust fungicide programme is recommended. It also carries the trait for pod shatter resistance.

GROWING HEAR OILSEED RAPEHigh Erucic Acid Rapeseed (HEAR) has a variety of food and industrial applications, including high temperature lubricants, slip agents, printing ink, cosmetics and consumable spreads. There is an increased demand from existing and new markets for harvest 2021. If growers want to potentially move back into ‘00’ or HOLL contracts in the future then they should follow good agronomic practice to maximise seed germination post-harvest, ensure an appropriate gap between oilseed rape crops and consider using Clearfield oilseed rape.

Please consult your Agrii agronomist.

PALMEDOR HEAR Hybrid – UK

Remains the leading high erucic acid variety in the Agrii portfolio. It is quick to establish and grow in the spring to make the most of field conditions. It is a medium-tall variety (159 cm) and has excellent stem stiffness (7) and lodging resistance (8). Relatively early to flower (6) and mature (6). Relatively weak on Light Leaf Spot (4) so this needs to be managed carefully.

BREEDER: KWS UK

ROCCA HEAR Hybrid – UK

Rocca has proven attractive in the North for its vigorous growth habit, improved Light Leaf Spot resistance (7) and early maturity. Suitable for all soil types and best drilled in the main drilling window. Medium height but it requires a robust PGR programme as it has only moderate stem stiffness. Average Phoma/Stem Canker resistance so monitor for this disease and spray as appropriate.

GROWING CLEARFIELD OILSEED RAPEClearfield varieties were developed using conventional breeding techniques to be genetically tolerant to the herbicide Imazamox. The Cleravo herbicide provides excellent control of the brassica weeds such as Charlock, Runch and Hedge Mustard. It is also very effective at reducing Erucic Acid from historical oilseed rape volunteers that can contaminate the harvested crop. The herbicide also provides broad spectrum control of a wide range of annual broad-leaved weeds as well as cereal volunteers. The Clearfield System has grown in popularity over the past four years and is expected to increase further this autumn.

The seed and herbicide (Cleravo and Dash adjuvant) should only be purchased jointly and crops should be agronomised by Agrii personnel. Non-Clearfield varieties, if sprayed, would suffer total crop loss with the product, so care is required.

Given the risks from an incorrect application it is essential that the crop receives careful stewardship and management throughout its growing life and beyond.

For full details contact your Agrii agronomist.

GROWING HOLL OILSEED RAPEThe oil from High Oleic, Low Linolenic (HOLL) varieties produces a more stable oil for the food industry for commercial high temperature frying applications. It is used either alone or in proprietary oil blends by food companies like McDonald’s and KFC and there is continuing interest across Europe for this oil type.

V316OL HOLL Hybrid – East, West & Yorkshire

V316OL remains the mainstay of the HOLL acreage and continues to deliver high treated (105%) and untreated yields (98%) with high oil content (45.8%). The HOLL market continues to deliver a significant financial premium over ‘00’ oilseed rape.

It remains very attractive to the crusher and growers alike. Suitable for all soils and regions but most of the Agrii sales are in the East and West regions. Yorkshire tends to be the northern limit because the crop is crushed in Kent. Performs well on heavier soils but ensure a robust PGR programme is used to reduce the height of the canopy, especially in more fertile situations. Best drilled in August as it is a slower developing variety and less suited for September drilling unless conditions remain favourable.

Grows quickly away in the spring to produce a very tall stiff canopy. Medium-early to flower and a long pod fill period means that it has medium-late maturity. Reasonably good disease resistance but no pod shatter resistance. One of the varieties least affected by Verticillium Wilt where it was assessed in Agrii trials.

BREEDER: BAYER CROP SCIENCE

V367OL NEW HOLL Hybrid – East, West & Yorkshire

V367OL has similar gross output (101%) and agronomic profile to V316OL but with a faster speed of development in the autumn and spring. This important characteristic helps cope with challenging growing conditions and can mitigate against the effects of Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle, pigeons and slugs.

It is early to flower (7) and goes on to produce a moderately tall canopy but with good lodging resistance (8), reasonable stem stiffness (6), and medium maturity (5).

It has average Phoma/Stem Canker resistance (5), reasonable Light Leaf Spot resistance (6) and carries the pod shatter resistance trait. Limited quantities are available this autumn for it to be tried alongside V316OL.

OILSEED SEED TREATMENTS

INTEGRAL PRO

Integral Pro has become the standard base-treatment for oilseed rape. It is also the first biological seed treatment, based on Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. It both controls the common damping-off diseases and stimulates the plant’s own natural defences to improve early root and shoot biomass. There is also evidence that it can reduce early Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle damage but only under low insect pressure. Compatible with Take Off OSR.

TAKE OFF OSR

Take Off helps the oilseed rape crop establish itself in difficult conditions. Proven on-farm to deliver greater root mass and greater uniformity of establishment often leading to improved yields in difficult conditions. It is the combination of two complementary bio-stimulants, namely stabilised phosphite and pyro-glutamic acid.

LUMIPOSA

Lumiposa (cyantraniliprole) reduces Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle (CSFB), Cabbage Root Fly and Turnip Sawfly and may be available on limited stocks of imported hybrid seed. Tested by Agrii over three years, it has given a consistent effect against CSFB when used in sequence with foliar pyrethroids. However, the effect is relatively modest and cannot be relied upon in situations of high pest pressure. While the importation of treated seed is legal it must be used at the farmer’s own risk.

Ask your Agrii agronomist or seed manager to find out more about speed of development, pod shatter resistance, Turnip Yellow Virus resistance and more.

• YELLOW & BROWN RUST RATINGS: During 2019 higher than expected levels of Yellow and Brown Rust were seen in some varieties in some trials. Careful analysis of the 2019 data from Recommended List trials did not reveal dramatic changes in average disease ratings. These are national average ratings and it is not yet clear if the reported cases of high Yellow and Brown Rust disease levels in 2019 indicate the initial emergence of new rust races or exceptionally high disease pressure at some sites. Given the highly dynamic nature of the Yellow and Brown Rust populations in the UK over recent years all varieties should be closely monitored for rusts, as local rust populations may differ from the general UK population and may be more or less virulent on a variety than the Recommended List rating suggests.
