Worker’s hand shredded in freak farm accident

LYDENBURG - On Tuesday a freak accident occured when a man’s left hand got trapped and mangled in a harvester’s auger.

Themba Mkhonto (23), a farmworker on a farm outside town, was apparently trying to dislodge a piece of wire in the rotating auger when tragedy struck.

According to his brother and sister, who were at the medical centre where Mkhonto

Narda Vermaak was rushed to after the accident, he had still been busy removing the wire when another worker, unknowingly, started the harvester.

“He screamed and the man switched off the machine, but it was too late - his hand had already been caught up in the implement.”

Mkhonto had to be rushed to the medical centre with the auger still attached to his hand. The auger has several small blades which penetrated

it, cutting off blood supply and making it impossible to remove without specialised surgery. In the meantime, Dr Anton Steenkamp treated a severely injured Mkhonto until Netcare 911 medical personnel took over.

A decision was made to call in the Netcare’s medical helicopter, Halo 3, to transport him to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.

This was the third time in years that an emergency helicopter landing had to

take place at night. Netcare personnel, including local advanced life support paramedic, André Denneyschen, treated and stabilised Mkhonto at the centre before he could be airlifted to Milpark.

At this stage it is not certain whether he will retain the use of his hand or whether it will have to be amputated.

His distressed brother told the newspaper this is a tragic accident. “He is still young. We don’t know if they can save his hand. I just hope he pulls through.”

The minor who was assaulted by a teacher at Marota Primary School.

Gilbert Motseo and Melvin Seroka

Guilty verdict for teacher accused of dealing out corporal punishmentBURGERSFORT - A local teacher was

found guilty of common assault after she beat a seven-year-old grade two learner two years ago.

Marota Primary School’s Joyce Mbiza was handed a 12-month sentence or a R4 000 fine by the Burgersfort Regional Court last Thursday. She assaulted a minor on July 27, 2017.

The young girl was punished for allegedly “writing slowly”.

According to the child’s mother, who cannot be named to protect her daughter’s identity, the little girl has turned into a “monster” and has been violent towards her peers since the incident.

“I always have other parents coming to my house complaining about my child’s bad behaviour. They say she is aggressive and violent when she plays with them. I also once saw her beat another child; she was exacting so much force.”

The mother said after the incident, her child came home from school with a bruise

above her eye. “I took her to a doctor where I was

advised to open a criminal case. I also engaged the school, as well as the Bogwasha Circuit, to no avail.

“I then took the matter to the South African Council for Educators (SACE), which found the teacher guilty. We were left with no choice but to report the case to the SAPS and we are glad that the matter was handled accordingly.”

Testifying during the court proceedings, the mother said her daughter has been seeing a psychologist since the incident.

“We normally take her twice a month. She is still a bit violent and we hope the situation changes.”

The mother indicated to the court that she would be happy if the educator was handed a punishment that would make other teachers “think twice before practising corporal punishment”.

“I have forgiven the teacher, but I am not sure if my child has forgiven her for what she did,” she said. The Ga-Motodi mother said she took the child out of the school in

the beginning of 2018.Mbiza’s lawyers filed an application for

leave to appeal after the judgement was handed down by the court. The case is expected to be heard in the Polokwane High Court on a yet undisclosed date.

The defence argued that the minor was not at school during the alleged date of assault, and said the class register on the day indicated that the child was not at school.

Corporal punishment at school was outlawed by the SA Schools Act in 1996.

Limpopo Department of Education’s spokesman, Sam Makondo said teachers need to stop practising corporal punishment.

“Corporal punishment is illegal in South African schools and anyone who still breaks the law must be prepared to incur the wrath of the law.”

The EFF’s Gerry Mnisi said they supported the verdict from the court. “We went from pillar to post to ensure that justice is served for the child. We supported the mother from her visits to the schools, circuits and the courts.”

Home affairs’ service nothing short of despicableLYDENBURG - The Department of

Home Affairs (DHA) in town is in shambles. Since the building in which this govern-

ment service was situated, was declared unsafe a year ago, service has gone from bad to worse.

The roof of the building in Voortrekker Street started to collapse in 2018 and was immediately evacuated. Since then, only a mobile truck has been available to more than 38 000 residents. For the past year they have been subjected to not only disgraceful service delivery, but have been left exposed to severe weather elements.

Steelburger/Lydenburg News’ journalist went to apply for an unabridged marriage certificate, but after more than four hours, had to leave without any assistance or application. What was experienced, however, was shocking.

Those applying for IDs, passports or any other documents were forced to stand and wait in the sun because of a lack of seating and shade. The so-called mobile clinic only serviced about two people the entire time and when enquiring about the lack of assistance, the journalist was greeted with a mouth full of food.

For four hours it would seem that the only service that was being rendered was that of collecting already issued documents.

There were no toilet facilities and people urinated against the containers. A toddler simply excremented on the ground. Staff were rude and refused to be of any assistance, only pointing to the truck and saying one had to wait until you were called.

This was not the first time complaints were received about the department. In May it could not render any services when its router was apparently damaged by lightning.

Although the town has not experienced any rainfall since March, the DHA was adamant that lightning struck and damaged the router.

The newspaper sent various queries in an attempt to get any feedback on the matters at hand. Emails were sent to various communications managers within the department on both national and provincial level. Phone calls went unanswered and at the time of going to press, no response was received.

After Steelburger/Lydenburg News shared its experience at the Department of Home Affairs in Lydenburg, various residents came forward with similar and even worse experiences. Here are just some of the responses received.

The Department of Home Affairs in town.

André Welgemoed: My family and I were severely disappointed. It took us three days to collect our passports. The personnel were extremely rude and the service was poor. Next time I will rather travel to Pretoria to have anything done. There they are much more friendly and eager to assist.Jolene Barnard: I have been there three times. With my first visit I wanted to know what documentation I needed to get my kids’ birth certificates. Being pregnant, I asked people in the queue if they would mind if I just went in to ask, of which a few didn’t mind. Nearer to the front there was a problem with some people, thinking I was trying to cut the queue. They called someone inside, who came out and

shouted at me, saying I must wait like everyone else. I told him I just wanted to know what I needed to bring. He ignored me and walked back into the container. Security was friendly and helped me with what I needed to know. The second time, I took a copy of my ID along and got there when the queue was not that long. I got inside the container only to be told my copy needs to be certified. I went back a third time and was told I needed to stand in the queue and if I sat down I would lose my place. Pregnant or not, they don’t care. So my opinion is: if you are not fit to stand or are pregnant, don’t go to home affairs. They won’t accommodate you. I still don’t have my kids’ birth certificates.Joan Kemp: Have been struggling for a long time to get my ID. I am disheartened. They are constantly offline. Not to mention, each time you have to put in a day’s leave. Talita Botha: What service? Absolutely pathetic! Danie Cilliers: Can’t complain about the service. There is none! Rina Kruger: The staff act as if you owe them something for their service delivery. You take a day off to wait there but their time is more important to them than kindness, sacrifice and there is no such thing as obligations to clients. Where are the priorities of excellent customer service delivery today? It’s definitely swept under the carpet or the staff are sitting on it. Toinette Finlay Keel: Service? What service? The treatment of taxpaying citizens by the incompetent, rude and uninterested employees of home affairs is beyond words. Home affairs in Lydenburg should be closed down completely, and none of those employees should be allowed to work with the public.

Potholes on the road.

Residents concerned about the terrible state of Jane Furse roads

SEKHUKHUNE - Several complaints were recently sent to the newspaper regarding the horrific condition of the road leading to Jane Furse from the steel bridge.

They revealed that people were concerned about the large potholes in the Jane Furse CBD. Others also complained about traffic lights not functioning in the area.

“The Makhuduthamaga Municipality has neglected roads in Jane Furse, the potholes are enormous. You cannot even believe you are driving in a town.

“We are fed up with this road. For years

we complained to the municipality, but nothing has been done,” said Elias Makola, Mokwete resident.

This publication contacted the Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality’s spokesman, Lemson Morapjane, who highlighted that the Jane Furse area and its surroundings were recently hit hard by heavy rains and storms.

“We are actually dealing with a huge backlog. In fact, the torrential rains have not stopped, making the job even more difficult for our maintenance team.

“We already started with the maintenance on the road. The road will be fully patched soon,” Morapjane said.

Stupendous SAPS effort leads to 866 arrests

SEKHUKHUNE - The Limpopo SAPS have arrested 866 suspects across the province.

In a concerted effort by the men and women in blue to deal head-on with crime, suspects aged between 19 and 51 were apprehended for various offences.

The arrests were effected during Operation New Dawn, conducted from June 17 to 25 in all clusters of the province.

It involved various police units from the provincial, cluster and station level. This included crime intelligence, the detectives, the public order police unit, K9 unit and the tactical response team.

“These simultaneous operations were aimed at stabilising and normalising the crime-infested areas, through roadblocks, stop-and-searches, tracing of wanted

suspects and raiding of unlicensed businesses, including liquor outlets,” said Limpopo SAPS spokesman, Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

He said the suspects were nabbed for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, business and house robberies, armed robbery, burglaries, rape, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of drugs, suspected stolen properties, contravention of the immigration act, to driving under the influence of liquor and operating unlicensed liqour outlets.

Police also issued 1 001 traffic fines, closed eight shebeens and confiscated five cars, 10 computers, 27 knives, 10 firearms, TVs, cellphones and drugs weighing more than 230 grams.

“The origin of the recovered firearms and other items, will still be determined through ongoing investigations,” added Ngoepe.

The suspects arrested during this operation will appear in various Magistrate’s Courts around Limpopo.

VOX POPBURGERSFORT - As the town’s size increases, more people settle here and that means a greater need for public transport.Whether by bus, car or taxi, Steelburger/Lydenburg News took to the streets to ask the commuters whether or not they believe public transport is safe to make use of.

I’ve been using public transport for a very long time and I have never experienced an accident.

I always feel safe.

Fortunate Malatji

For me it is safe to use. I have been using public transportation for three years now without any incidents.

Evelyn Maboki

Public transportation is okay to use but not hitch-hiking. We hear of girls getting murdered and going missing never

to be seen again. You have to know your driver or go directly to the ranks.

Rocky Kgoloko

I feel it is definitely not safe to use public transportation. You can see by the way they drive that they have no respect for other road users.

For me it is safe to use. I make use of it daily. Some drivers are good and some are bad. I usually have a guy that I can

call to drive me around.

I make use of public transportation. Sometimes you just get a bad driver. One thing the public must keep in mind is that these drivers work under pressure to get people where they need to be on time, otherwise they don’t make money.

Sekhukhune District Municipality’s mayor Stan Ramaila and FTLM mayor Naume Phala.

Gilbert Motseo

FTLM mayor bemoans VBS effects during SolmaAPEL - The mayor of Fetakgomo Tubatse

Local Municipality (FTLM), Naume Phala, pleaded with the municipality’s employees and communities to stop tribalism.

Phala was speaking during her first State of the Local Municipality Address (Solma) held in Moses Mabotha Hall at Ga-Nkwana last Friday.

This was the third Solma since the merger between Fetakgomo and Greater Tubatse local municipalities.

“We are saddened by the recent developments taking place in the municipality, which are aimed at destabilising the institution and bringing confusion among people. We must rise above such petty issues of tribalism and regionalism, which should not be allowed to prevail among us.’’

The mayor was referring to the recent calls by municipal employees to have the FTLM merger dissolved.

“We call upon our employees not to fall into this trap. Our responsibility is to bring quality services to communities and our officials are at the centre of the provision of the services.”

On acceleration of services, Phala said they have taken note of suggestions made by the public during the integrated development plan (IDP) meetings.

She said during the IDP consultations they realised that local communities were in need of clean and reliable water, access to roads, provision of electricity and employment opportunities.

She said FTLM is operating under tight financial circumstances and therefore they were unable to cater to all the needs the community raised.

“It will need a collective effort to find ways towards financial recovery,” the mayor said.

She said the council resolved to recoup the investment made with VBS Mutual Bank.

“We hope whatever we get shall go a long way in assisting with the provision of basic services. The municipality will continue to implement cost containment measures until the financial situation is stable.”

According to Phala, FTLM was concerned about the drug scourge affecting the local youth. “I want to make it my priority to

mobilise resources to make sure we open avenues for young people addicted to drugs and other substances. The health workers and SAPS cannot win this war on drugs if we don’t join them in the drive to rid our society of it.”

On local economy, she admitted that FTLM failed local businesses.

“We have failed many of our SMMEs because most of our programmes and projects were shelved as a result of financial constraints due to the loss of the investment made with VBS Mutual Bank. We must confess that the loss affected the municipality negatively as we were on the brink of total collapse.”

She revealed that the municipality had to adjust their budget twice in the last financial year in order to comply with Treasury regulations.

Phala also encouraged women and the youth to tap into agriculture, as it is one of the drivers of the economy.

“In the next financial year, we have set aside an amount of R1,1 million to sustain

Kgahliso Lekubu, Colin Mohubedu and Thomas Magabe. Some of the youth seeking employment.

Gilbert Motseo

We are willing to do any job to survive, say the local youth

BURGERSFORT - Statistics South Africa recently announced that the number of unemployed persons increased by 62 000 to 6,2 million in the first quarter of the year.

The situation is also dire in Tubatse. Most youth are seen daily assembling at farms, shops or mines in the hopes of getting that all-important job.

Many job seekers can be seen on the R37 to Lydenburg daily. They seek an opportunity to work on the local farms. Steelburger/Lydenburg News caught up with a trio of youth hunting for employment.

“We wake up with hope that one of the good days we will find work. We wish to provide for our families, as well as our kids,” said job seeker, Thomas Magabe.

Magabe said they often rely on other farm workers to tip them off on days that management will be hiring. “We then leave our homes before the crack of dawn to arrive early at the farms. It’s cold, but we just have to get up and try our luck.”

Colin Mahubedu remarked that it is difficult to get a job in this country. “We are at this time willing to do any job to survive; we tried the mining sector with no luck.”

Some of them revealed that they were staying in the local villages bordering Burgersfort, while others are from neighbouring countries.

Kgahliso Lekubu from Taung Village indicated that they tried creating jobs by selling and starting businesses, but all their dreams were shattered.

“For one to start a successful business, you need start-up capital, and we are struggling to get such money. We are also unskilled,” he added.

eight agricultural projects and assist five new projects. Although the allocation is not enough, it will go a long way in ensuring those projects kick off the ground and are sustainable,” she added.

She once again apologised to the crowd for not fulfilling the promises made during

the 2018/19 IDP and budget consultations.

“It was a difficult decision not to implement all the projects and we had no means to survive. We have learned a lot from the financial crisis and we are working around

the clock to restore the credibility of our institution.

“We must mention that the municipality is operating under severe financial pressure, and our people should understand as we are heavily dependent on conditional grants from Treasury and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.”

The mayor also gave a glimmer of hope on multi-year projects.

She insisted that the Leboeng access road,

Motodi Sports Complex, Mapodile Sports Complex, Praktiseer Testing Station upgrade and Tukakgomo internal streets will be completed before the end of the calendar year.

She revealed that they were also hoping that contractors would be on site with the electrification of Phelindaba, Khalanyoni, Dithabaneng and Mashamothane before the end of the financial year.

The mayor apologised to the communities that were affected by the failed Operation Mabone initiative. The programme was earmarked to electrify about 28 villages in and around Tubatse.

“We apologise to communities affected by the Operation Mabone programme for not fulfilling our promises made during the 2018/19 financial year. We were forced by circumstances beyond our control not to implement the programme in the remaining villages, except Koppie and Buffelshoek where Eskom has energised. In the 2019/20 financial year we have put aside R20 million to complete the project.”

She said the money was not enough to cover all villages, but they have embarked on a drive to solicit funds from the local mines to adopt other villages.

According to the mayor, a total of 1 604 households will be electrified.

On mining, Phala revealed that FTLM gave recognition letters to community structures in Ngwaabe/Steelpoort and Tjibeng/Mooilek areas to be engagement forums with the mines on socio-economic issues affecting their constituencies.

“Since April 2019 we have embarked on a drive to visit all the mines to strengthen relations and find ways to improve the community. To date, we have visited Samancor, Glencore and Anglo-American Platinum and we can report that our engagements were positive and a step in a right direction. We shall continue with visits to all other mining houses before the end of September 2019.”

In concluding, the mayor revealed that the municipality’s total budget for 2019/20 financial year is R731 million. Revenue from grants and subsidies amounts to R524 million for 2019/20. Equitable share is R415 million, while municipal infrastructure grant funding is R84 million and integrated national electrification grant is R20 million.

We must mention that the municipality is operating under severe financial

pressure, and our people should understand

A grandmother’s fight to save her grandchildren

BURGERSFORT - Mental issues, neglect and disfigurement - these are only a few of the consequences children suffer if their parents are addicted to drugs.

After Steelburger/Lydenburg News published a story about addiction last week, the paper was contacted by a grandmother fighting to get custody of her two grandchildren in an effort to save their lives. She agreed to speak to the newspaper on condition that she and the children remain anonymous.

Megan* is the temporary legal guardian of her two grandchildren, Joshua* (5) and Mira* (3).

Her son has been using a variety of drugs over a period of seven years. He has managed to get clean twice, but a toxic relationship with his partner drew him back to the underworld of drugs time and again. He and his partner had had two children, but according to Megan, drugs were more important than their welfare.

After an argument one day, her son left home with the children. He moved to a different location. “I asked them if I could see the children at least two weekends in a month. Knowing I had no legal ground to stand on, I still decided to fight to get them out of those circumstances,” said Megan.

The final straw was when the children were dropped off one weekend at her house. At the gate she noticed they were walking

awkwardly. She managed to potty train them while they were living with her, but now they both wear diapers.

When she first changed their diapers she was astonished to see the children’s buttocks were burned badly, as they were raw and bloody. She took photographs and sent it to the mother, who in return blamed the preschool. After investigating, Megan discovered that the children were only at school two days a week.

Joshua’s ears were blocked with dirt. After doing a hearing test, they thought he was deaf. It took months for the blockage to clear up with the use of medication.

She decided then and there she would not give the children back. She later found out that Joshua had been burned under his foot with a cigarette, that they had been sleeping on the ground and rarely ate anything. Due to the mother’s drug use during her pregnancy, Joshua lost one of his hands, has a heart defect, weak bone structures, is mentally challenged and is unable to speak.

After long battles in court, Megan was granted custody of the children. “They were so happy to have beds to sleep on. In the beginning when they were eating, they would try to stuff it all in their mouths at once. We had to win their trust over the years, and the trust that they will get food again,” said Megan.

She believes they saved Mira in time before any lasting damage could be done to her. She is functioning like any girl of her age. Unfortunately, Joshua was not so lucky. He has to go to Steve Biko Hospital in Pretoria for constant check-ups with doctors and neurologists. Doctors are researching the possibility to build him a hand, using bones from Megan to form fingers. This process is said to be very painful. He is undergoing speech and psychological therapy. He can only speak a couple of words. His future is uncertain and he will need lifelong care.

“My message to drug abusers is: drugs do not only affect the person using it, it affects everyone around them and destroys lives,” said Megan.

Lydenburg SAPS’ acting communications officer, Given Maduma, told the newspaper that

their aim was to address parents, since they are the ones who neglect their children. “The SAPS have challenges with cases that involve children,

especially where parents seem not to care about their children. We urge them to take precautionary measures that their children are always safe.”

Newly unveiled wine deemed to be fit for a king LYDENBURG - Lydenburg’s Wine Guild

chose an exciting new wine range for their June tasting at Café Crust on Thursday June 20.

A colourfully dressed Thuli and Thabi Myanga introduced wine lovers to Bayede!, the first and only Royal Signature range in Africa, endorsed by King Goodwill Zwelethini.

Bayede! means “Hail the King” - the salute used to greet the great King Shaka and still reserved to salute King Goodwill Zwelethini kaBhekuzulu.

In honour of the 60th birthday of His Majesty, the new range of Bayede! wines was developed by winemaker Altus le Roux, producing a variety of easy drinking wines in Paarl.

Bayede! is also a powerful royal job creation enterprise, focusing on the empowerment of women and supporting enterprise development in rural areas.

Every bottle is adorned with a hand-made string of beads.

The range of products include olive oil, tea, vinegars as well as ceramics, apparel and home textiles.

Lydenburg Wine Guild tasted the Prince Range, and even the connoisseurs gave the wines exceptionally high scores.

The Prince Sauvignon Blanc 2019 was selected as white wine of the evening and the Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 as both red wine of the evening and best value for money – at a mere R60 per bottle.

With scores ranging from 15 to 18 out of 20, it was a hard choice between the two contenders and the Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2017, Merlot 2018 and Pinotage 2018.

Café Crust’s chefs complimented the wines with a hearty lentil soup, a scrumptious beef stew pot pie and a bread and butter pudding accompanying the Queen Nandi MCC Brut.

Bayede! wines are locally available at TOPS at SPAR and Checkers. For more

information or to join Lydenburg’s Wine

Guild on the third Thursday of the month, contact [email protected] or 079-515-7799.

Winter school sharpens the edgesSKHILA - Skhila Secondary School’s

grade 12 pupils are not bored this holiday. In fact, they are working hard to better

their results in various subjects at the Winter School Monitoring Programme presented at the school.

According to the school’s principal, Gerald Mokoena, over 80 per cent of the school’s pupils attended the programme, which ran from June 17 to 28. Mokoena said the winter school is an annual initiative carried out in the province to afford learners and teachers an opportunity to deal with curriculum deficits diagnosed through a track record of learner performance.

“The conduct of the Winter School Monitoring Programme, by the provincial education department, is a process intended to enrich learner content knowledge in preparation for the final National Senior Certification Examinations.

The main objective of this camp is to sustain and increase the number of learners who qualify for bachelor studies at institutions of higher learning.

“The department also decided to appoint the best teachers who specialise in critical

learning areas including mathematics, physical science and accounting to assist during the winter school vacation,” said Mokoena.

“This type of practice is critical, because it will improve the level of learner

performance in the underperforming schools and we are very grateful that the majority of pupils have attended the winter classes.

“Hopefully our school will rise to the top this year,” said Mikateko Mathebula, a matriculant at the school.

Ngwaabe City Motors were crowned the Sekhukhune SAB League champions.

The team from Steelpoort will represent the region in the ABC Motsepe League playoffs held at the Mangabane Sports Grounds this weekend. The ABC Motsepe League is the third-tier league in South African football.

City Motors, as they have affectionately

been known, beat off stiff competition from Phiring’s Golden Aces, Denilton Callies and Kingborn FC from Jane Furse to top the four-team mini-log. They played to a stalemate draw against Aces and managed a convincing 4-1 win against Callies. They also defeated Kingborn 3-1.

Chairman of the team, Kgolokgotha Masha urged locals from Sekhukhune to come and support his team in their quest to be the first team from Tubatse to play in the

The security company sponsored a two-day soccer and netball tournament at Coromandel recently.

According to Jandré Stander from Phoenix, the company has been the main sponsors of the local Coromandel soccer team for the past 18 months. Jan Burger, also

Phoenix also sponsored the soccer officials’ shirts for the day, as well as the soccer and netball jerseys.”

There were six soccer teams and four netball teams who participated in the tournament. “The teams were from all over Mpumalanga and Limpopo,” Burger said.

Support from all local leagues will be appreciated. We wish to fly the Tubatse flag high,” Masha said.

Among the key players for City Motors will be skipper, Emmanuel Matjomane as well as centre back, Bonolo Malepe.

The five teams that will compete for the ABC Motsepe spot this weekend are Ngwaabe City Motors FC, Makotopong Brazilians, Mpheni Home Defenders FC, Terrors FC and Makoti Happy Fighters FC.
