Old man winter made his effi

In Wyoming and Montana. where
residents are often digging out o'
snow storms as this time of yea.the iiinperatures were higher than
they were in most of Florida.
Women in Miami. Fla.. put on
fur jackets to do their Christmie
shopping. But at mile-hieh Denver,
Colo., the weateer was so mite
shoppers were going aroundjackets.
New York City, where the
weather generally isn't too severe,
was one of the chilliest places irthe nation. The temperature was
expeeted to go 10 or 5 degree•
above zero today.
New England howevei, main-
tained its wintry traditions with .1
snow •10CITI that cancelled an
oattic at Boston. Mass., and piles
up to 16 mithes of snow at Pore,
mouth, N.H.
Winter began ()Metall!, at 4:15
a.m. EST At that moment the se-

and the southern part of the island
of Madagascar
It was the shortest thy of theyear and the sun's warming raysslanted across the northern hemi-
