In the Beginning
• The internet first came into existence in 1969. The internet was developed as part of a project by the United States Department of Defense as a means to communicate that would survive a nuclear war (Cooper & Mathy, 2003).
Overview: What is Social Media?
** Online tool that - exchanges ideas, information, videos, pictures, and graphics — just about anything you can name.

Social Networking can be defined as a phenomenon that has recently taken
over the web, allowing more connectivity and interaction between web users. Several websites, such as Facebook and MySpace are labeled as
"virtual communities."
Social Networking WebsitesMost social networking websites typically have an open membership. This means that anyone can become a member, no matter what their hobbies, beliefs, or views are. However, once you are inside this
online community, you can begin to create your own network of friends; thus eliminating others that
do not meet your criteria.

History of facebook
• Founded by Mark Zuckerburg– Harvard University– Launched Feb 4th, 2004
• Originated for College students only– High School level– All users from different organizations
• Approximately 21 million members (5/7/07)– 100,000 new members weekly
Features of facebook• Photo Albums: Tag your friends!• Write them messages• Post something on their wall• Change your profile and picture• Add new friends• Harass people you don’t know by “poking” them

• 65% of their students between 8-14 have been involved directly or indirectly in a cyber bullying incident as the cyber bully, victim or friend

The problem with technology…• Provides anonymity / it feels like a “safe world” without consequences
• Indirect form of bullying• Information spreads much faster and is put into the hands of masses

Procrastination
• Instead of doing school work, many students spend time on social networking sites.
• Not only does this procrastination effect the youth, but a majority of people using social networking sites.
