Hi Grade 3 students! For the previous weeks, you

learned about the various landforms and bodies of

water found in the provinces in the Philippines. You also

learned the importance of the resources in order for

the people to survive. This time, you are expected to

learn the different natural resources and the people’s

major role to protect our natural resources.

Do you know that natural resources are things that we

get from nature? Yes, these things help us meet our

basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter.

Natural resources are also used to make other

products that we use every day. We get natural

resources from the different landforms and water

forms. These resources are classified as land

resources, water resources, and energy resources.

5

Land Resources

The Philippines is rich in natural resources. Part of its land

resources are rich forests which host various plants and animals.

Some examples of Philippine trees are narra, molave, acacia,

lauan, and kamagong.

Land is a very important resources for communities. It is on

the land that we plant trees that provide us materials for building

houses. We also plant crops that provide us food. Landforms

such as plains and valleys are mostly useful sources of land for

farming and housing.

Many natural resources can be found in forests. The forests

are home to many unique and beautiful plants and animals.

Large trees in the forests are cut down and their wood is used to

make many products. However, we must be careful not to cut

too much trees because taking too much resources can do

harm to our environment.

We can find valuable metals and minerals deep under

mountains and hills. Precious stones such as diamonds can be

found here, too. Useful metals such as iron, copper gold, and

silver are also taken from mines.

Uses of Plants Human beings depend on plants and animals for survival. In

this topic, we will discuss the uses of plants. Below are 10

important uses of plants:

1. Food from plants – Plants give us fruits, vegetables,

seeds, flowers

o From roots, we get potatoes, radish, beetroot,

carrot, etc.

o Seeds of some plants provide us with almonds,

groundnut, rice, wheat, etc.

o From leaves and stem, we get silverbeet, lettuce,

etc.

o Fruits like Mango, apple, grapes, etc.

2. Wood from plants – trees provide us with timber and

firewood

o Furniture like table, chair, window, door, etc. is

made of wood

3. Cotton plants – They provide us with cotton clothes like

pillow, towel, bed-sheets, etc.

4. Fibre plants provide us with ropes, jute bags, etc.

5. Plants give us medicines – Some plants are of

medicinal importance. Medicines made from such

plants are called medicinal plants

o Example : Tulsi, Neem Brahmi, etc.

8

Uses of Plants

6. Plants give us rubber, gum, paper – Some plants give us

gum. Rubber plant gives us rubber

o Eraser, tyre etc.

o Plants like eucalyptus and bamboo are used to

make paper

7. Oil from plants – Seeds of some plants are oily and

hence oil is extracted. This oil is used in cooking and

various other purposes.

o Sunflower oil, groundnut oil, mustard oil are used

for cooking

o Almond oil, coconut oil, etc are used to apply on

hair

8. Perfume from plants – Flowers of some plants are used

to make perfumes

o Apart from decorative purpose, flowers like

jasmine, rose are used to make perfumes

9. Manure from plants – Plant waste is used as manure for

the growth of other plants

10. Clean air to breathe – Plants and trees help in

controlling air pollution. During the process of

photosynthesis, they take in carbon dioxide and give

out oxygen. We inhale the oxygen from the air and

exhale carbon dioxide. Hence, the process continues

and the air is pollution-free for us to breathe.

Plants make our surroundings delightful. Flowers like

sampaguita, rosal, orchids, and others turn our home into

enchanting sight. The essential oils from these flowers are

important ingredients in making perfumes, colognes, lotions,

and other beauty products. Plants are also sources of herbal

medicines.

Water Resources

Oceans and seas give us a lot of marine resources. Fishes

like sardines, salmon, and tuna are caught in the deep parts of

the oceans and seas. Other products like pearls, seaweeds, and

corals are also taken from the oceans and seas.

Lakes and rivers are sources of different freshwater fishes

such as tawilis and tilapia. Rivers and lakes also provide us fresh

water for drinking and watering our plants. Dams are

constructed in large rivers so the water can be used for irrigating

rice fields.

Energy Resources

At present, we use a lot of energy for our everyday needs.

Important energy resources in our country include bodies of

water such as waterfalls, rivers, and hot springs. The energy of

the Maria Cristina Falls in Lanao del Norte is used to generate

electricity. The San Roque Dam in Pangasinan uses the waters

of the Agno River to generate energy. The Tiwi Power Plant in

Albay uses the steam from hot springs and volcanic vents in the

area to produce energy.

16

Presently, the major energy sources for the whole world

include mineral resources such as oil or petroleum, natural gas,

and coal. Oil or petroleum is taken deep under the ground

through oil drills. Many drills are found on land while some drill

the ground below the sea. Petroleum produced by oil drills are

used to make fuels such as gasoline and kerosene.

Conserving Our Natural Resources

Large and growing communities often use more resources.

But, natural resources are limited and it is important for people

to use them wisely. There are several ways by which we can use

our natural resources properly. We can recycle our materials by

reusing old things or finding new uses for old materials. Garbage

must also be segregated. This means separating the garbage

that will rot from those that will not rot and placing them in

different bags or containers.

18

We can also make good use of our land by planting a

vegetable garden in our backyards. We can save money by

growing our own vegetables for food.

19

We can help conserve water at home by observing simple

practices. Use a glass when brushing your teeth. Stop using the

shower and use a dipper when taking a bath. Use a pail of water

when watering the plants or washing cars.

20

21

We can join activities and programs which will help the

environment. Many groups conduct community clean-up

drives or tree -planting activities in our community or province

21

We can conserve energy by using our appliances properly.

Set a schedule for using the television and computer, and turn

them off when not in use. Turn off lights and unplug appliances

that are not being used in the house. If possible, walk or ride a

bike when going around your community.

22

Use the alphabetical guide below to help us have effective virtual classes.

A is for Avoid Acronyms

• Use your full name when you sign in to the virtual

classroom and when you submit/upload your works

online.

• Be clear with your words and spell things out correctly in

order to avoid confusion and misunderstandings with the

teacher and classmates. Avoid using acronyms such as

LOL (laugh out loud) and TTYL (talk to you later), not all

users are as familiar with these abbreviations

B is for Brevity

• While participating in virtual classroom discussions, keep

your answers short and on topic. You may also use the

chat box for your message or questions.

C is for Courtesy

• Be respectful. Even on online classes, use polite

expressions like “please” and “thank you.”

• Raise your “virtual hands” and wait to be recognized

when responding to a question or comment. You can

also use the keyboard shortcut Option+Y on a Mac or

Alt+Y on a PC to raise your hand.

• Mute your microphone during the lesson to avoid

disturbing the class with any background noise.

• Avoid using all uppercase letters; this is often considered

the equivalent of shouting.

• When you enter the classroom, make sure to enable

both audio and video.

29

D is for Ditching Distractions

•Before an online school session begins, eliminate

environmental distractions that may divert your attention

away from learning.

• Clear the room of playful pets or noisy siblings.

• Minimize background noise by turning off the TV and

radio.

• Turn off cell phones. (No multitasking during class!)

• Do not to let the microphone broadcast unless you are

asked to speak.

E is for Early

• Be prepared before the online class. Download any

necessary software and connect and test devices like

microphones or video cameras before the lesson begins.

Exit other applications on their computers prior to

launching the classroom software. Come to class early.

• When your class is over, leave the classroom by closing

the window.

F is for Focus and Friendships

• Focus on the classroom conversation and activities.

• Take notes on the information presented.

• Ask relevant questions to clarify the material covered or

assignments given.

• Do not join sideline chats with classmates when the

teacher is speaking.

30

G is for Good Intentions

• Read and interpret virtual classroom messages with the

assumption that teachers and classmates have good

intentions. What seems like a short or abrupt answer from

a classmate (or teacher) probably doesn’t mean anger—

the other person might just be busy.

• Reread your own messages for friendliness and respect

before sending.

In Submission of School Tasks

• All students are required to complete the school tasks

uploaded in the PSD LMS: e-desk. All works in the

asynchronous class/activities in the modules will be

monitored.

• All students are expected to submit their work, upload

or attach their work in the PSD LMS: e-desk. Select

carefully in the Assessment Evaluation Section where to

attach a particular work. If your file is too big, it needs to

be converted into the minimum size or you can provide a

link for your work.

• In case the server is down or too busy or overloaded, the

teacher will indicate another platform where you can

submit your work. Google classroom is the alternative

learning platform for PSD e-desk.

31
