Queen of the HouseWe adopted nine-year-old Billie two years ago in September 2014. She was shy and quiet at first but has now very much settled in to being the queen of the house, “senior” dog or not. She is so very loved, and she loves her family as well – although she’d sell us out for a milk bone.

By the Numbers(Jan. 1, 2016 – Dec. 31, 2016)
6,164 shelter pets found homes in 2016. of those, 2,433 were felines, 3,713 were canines and 18 were equine.
8,927pets were spayed or neutered at our high-quality, donor-supported S.n.i.P. clinic from January through December. Since opening in 2007, the clinic has altered more than 92,250 cats and dogs from Louisville and surrounding counties.
2016 was an amazing year of lifesaving at the Kentucky humane Society, and we couldn’t have done it without the love and support each of you provide KhS.
More than 6,000 dogs and cats – many wounded and frightened – were cared for and found loving homes, over 60 horses were rescued from life-threatening situations, and nearly 9,000 animals were spayed or neutered at our S.n.i.P. clinic.
in 2016 we opened two new adoption centers at feeders Supply – the Pewee Valley store and the north Dixie store in Shively. With these additional locations, KhS now has nine permanent adoption centers in feeders Supply stores throughout Louisville Metro, plus our east campus adoption center adjacent to Westport Village.
as amazing as 2016 was for the animals, i know that 2017 will be even brighter, thanks to your continued passion and support. as you will see on page 4, KhS has many exciting plans, all designed to better serve shelter pets as well as owned animals in our community.
Last fall we had the unexpected opportunity to purchase an existing pet boarding facility in Jeffersontown. after renovations, we opened the Sam Swope Pet Retreat in January. Surrounded by nature, this facility provides a relaxing place where shelter animals can heal from neglect, abuse or lack of socialization so they can become happy, healthy family members.
in addition, KhS is repurposing our main facility on Steedly Drive and will be renaming it the Sam Swope Pet Treatment & Lifesaving center (TLc). in January, we began renovations to expand our intake facility so we can better serve shelter animals and ready them for adoption at our 10 busy offsite adoption centers. Later this spring, we will open our healthy Pets clinic in the former adoptions lobby; we anticipate thousands of owned pets a year will receive low-cost preventative care at this clinic.
also in 2017, our Pet help Line – designed to help keep pets in their homes and out of shelters – expanded to seven days a week. Whatever issues local pet owners face, they can talk to a pet expert over the phone by calling 502-509-4PeT.
as a proactive animal welfare organization, KhS helps tens of thousands of needy companion animals each year. from Bert and ernie, a bonded pair of senior cats, to oakley, a free-roaming horse rescued from eastern Kentucky, KhS remains committed to helping Kentucky’s vulnerable companion animals.
Thank you for being a faithful supporter of the Kentucky humane Society. our progress is because of you.

Special Needs Dog Gets Rolling Again
Found alone on the street, Ten-year-old Tulip came to the Kentucky humane Society in early october.
her legs were twisted and atrophied from disuse. We knew immediately that Tulip was unable to use her hind legs.
Seeing no obvious signs of trauma, we sent Tulip to a local veterinary hospital where they did additional testing and found that the poor senior was paralyzed from the waist down. how long she had been this way and how she survived on her own, we can only imagine.
even in this state, Tulip was a loving and active pup, following people around, delighted to receive any love or attention. The staff here at KhS were amazed at Tulip’s joy for life. We knew she deserved improved mobility and another chance at a forever home.
Luckily for Tulip, a kind stranger had donated a wheelchair specially made for dogs, which would allow us to see how Tulip would do with more mobility.
While the wheelchair was too big, Tulip was determined to make the best of it. With the Kentucky humane Society staff cheering her on, Tulip took to the chair immediately. Tulip pranced along the drive, and we cried with joy.
“Tulip seemed to light up when she finally got out of a kennel and was able to ‘walk’ outside in her wheelchair. i remember several of us jumping up and down when she walked over to the grass to use the bathroom,” remembers KhS Veterinarian emily Bewley.
Tulip needed a chair that fit her better, so we went to our supporters and asked for help raising the funds we would need. Because people like you care about the lives of animals like Tulip, we received the funds we needed and ordered a chair. While we waited for the chair to arrive, one of our amazing fosters, Tami Kraus, agreed to take Tulip in.
While under Tami’s care, Tulip lived in a busy home with Tami, her husband, four
teenagers and two dogs. according to Tami, Tulip thrived.
“She adapted well to the chaos that is family life,” Tami explains. “She always wanted to be with the family, and her gentle nature made her such a joy.”
With or without the wheelchair, Tulip stayed an active little girl, scooting along on Tami’s hardwood floors. Tulip is very loved by her foster family, and Tami wants the best for this sweet girl.
“She’s sweet and gentle-natured. i want to see her with a person who has the time and understanding a special needs dog takes,” Tami says. U

Twice the LoveBonded Senior Animals Adopted Together
it is heartbreaking when senior animals end up at our doors. They often arrive sad, confused and stressed. But sometimes they arrive with a buddy. finding a home for not just one senior pet, but two, can take time, resources and a special adopter. Thanks to your donations, KhS can care for them until that special person comes along.
Bert and Erniein July, 15-year-old littermates Bert and ernie found themselves at KhS. Their owner made the agonizing decision to surrender them because her health was failing quickly. ernie, a blind tuxedo cat, and Bert, a tabby, had lived in the same home since they were three months old.
a wonderful family read about the senior cats on our website and drove over an hour to adopt them. They had a 19-year-old cat at home, and they couldn’t imagine their cat in this situation.
“our veterinarian says Bert and ernie are in amazing health,” says David of Bonnieville Ky. “We are hopeful they have many happy years ahead of them.”
Roxie and MollyRoxie, a senior 13-year-old Labrador Retriever mix, and Molly, a 9-year-old Beagle, had lived together since Molly was a puppy. When their owner’s health deteriorated and he was hospitalized, their neighbors banded together to walk, feed and care for the dogs. They promised Roxie and Molly’s dying owner that they would do everything in their power to find a wonderful home for them.
after his death, the neighbors contacted KhS, and we readied the two dogs for adoption. in early December, a kind-hearted man from Taylorsville, Ky, met both dogs at our east campus. he felt a connection to them both – but particularly to Roxie, who had advanced arthritis.
“Roxie and Molly are doing great,” says Donald. “Roxie has to rest sometimes during her walks, but they are both really enjoying life.” U
as most of you know, just before christmas, a frozen pipe burst in our big dog area, flooding the space. Quick work and many hands ensured the dogs were unhurt, but we would need to repair the damage as quickly as possible to ensure we could continue taking in new dogs.
We asked for your help – and you came through! in the three days following the disaster, 119 Kentucky humane Society
cats and dogs – including 34 large dogs – found loving families! in addition, donations and supplies poured in.
The work on the space has been completed, and we are able to house dogs in the area again. We are so grateful to everyone who adopted and who donated to help our shelter pets at this difficult time. U

A New Year of Lifesaving Transformations!
After renovations, the Main Campus will become the Sam Swope Pet TLC The former Main Campus lobby will house our Healthy Pets Clinic.
The Kentucky humane Society is constantly evolving to better serve needy animals and the people who love them. We are excited to share with you – our wonderful supporters – some of the changes happening at KhS, all designed to help shelter pets and to ensure that fewer animals end up in shelters in the first place.
More Adoption Options 9th Feeders Supply Adoption Center Opens
in December, the Kentucky humane Society celebrated the opening of our latest pet adoption center, located at the north Dixie feeders Supply, next to the Kroger Marketplace at 4921 Dixie highway in Louisville.
This is the ninth KhS adoption center in a feeders Supply store and the second new adoption center KhS opened with feeders Supply in 2016. our aim is to offer “everywhere adoptions”: within a 15-minute drive of almost every neighborhood in the Louisville Metro area, families can find wonderful pets looking for homes.
about 500 adoptions a year take place at each store. We are grateful for our 20-year partnership with feeders Supply, which has resulted in over 40,000 pet adoptions since 1996. That’s a lot of lifesaving!
Sam Swope Pet TLC Medical Care for Shelter Pets and Owned Pets
now with 10 vibrant, permanent adoption centers (including our east campus at 1000 Lyndon Lane), KhS will repurpose our main facility at 241 Steedly Drive to help more animals in our community.
adoptions at our main facility ended Dec. 31, and we are busy renovating and repurposing the campus, which will be renamed the Sam Swope Pet Treatment & Lifesaving center (TLc), after the late Sam Swope, who made a significant gift to help needy animals.
The Sam Swope Pet TLc will continue to be our “hub” for all incoming animals – readying over 6,000 dogs and cats a year for adoption. it will also serve as a rehabilitation site for pets needing
medical diagnostics, treatment, surgery or time to heal before adoption.
TLc renovations include adding roomier kennels for animals, using colony rooms to reduce stress for cats, adding diagnostic equipment such as x-ray and blood analysis machines, and expanding housing areas to treat contagious illnesses.
Healthy Pets Clinic Low-cost Preventatives for Owned Pets
The Sam Swope Pet TLc will also house our healthy Pets clinic, to be located in the former Steedly Drive adoptions lobby after minor renovations are completed. five days a week, the healthy Pets clinic will offer low-cost vaccines and basic preventatives, diagnostics and treatment of minor medical needs for local pets. The goal is to help keep owned pets healthy and out of shelters.
KhS anticipates renovations will be completed spring 2017. check our website, kyhumane.org or facebook, facebook.com/kyhumane to learn when we open!

Sam Swope Pet Retreat Rehabilitation Center for Shelter Pets
Last august KhS purchased an existing pet boarding facility in Jeffersontown. after a few months of renovations, we unveiled the Sam Swope Pet Retreat in January.
This facility provides a peaceful, natural setting where our behavioral team helps shelter animals recover from neglect, abuse or lack of proper socialization. it features 20 large rooms and private patios, a play yard and indoor play room.
Most unique is the “real life” area, which mimics a home; behavior trainers accustom shy, fearful animals to living in a home, helping them get comfortable with household noises, such as a vacuum, TV and blender. The Sam Swope Pet Retreat also offers a sun-filled home-like setting where young kittens and cats can relax and socialize until they are ready for adoption. U

Thanks to our 20-year partnership with feeders Supply, KhS has one of the most robust and diverse adoption programs in the country. every hour the stores are open, there are adoptable KhS pets and a KhS adoption counselor. That’s over 36,000 hours a year! feeders Supply provides the adoption space at no charge to KhS; the value of this in-kind donation is estimated at over $120,000, making feeders Supply one of KhS’ most generous annual supporters. equine news
in September, a Johnson county, Ky, man was up on a remote coal reclamation site in eastern Kentucky and encountered a gruesome sight: the bodies of three stallions who had been shot at close range and left for dead. The remainder of the herd was still lingering around their fallen friends, but were too skittish to be easily captured.
The horses were part of a small herd among the hundreds – and probably thousands – of free-roaming domestic horses living on former coal mining lands in appalachia without the care and support of humans.
once notified of the situation, the county judge executive ordered the remaining seven horses be removed for their own safety. That’s when local authorities contacted Kentucky humane Society’s equine c.a.R.e. (connect, assist, Rescue and educate) team for help. KhS equine Manager Bryce gill was called to the scene and worked closely with our friends and rescue partners, Dumas Rescue, on a capture plan.
our first attempts to round up the herd were unsuccessful; however, with some persistence and teamwork the horses were rounded up, transported to safety and held with a local veterinarian for their 15-day stray hold period. While on hold they received the medical care and nutrition they needed, and when no owners stepped forward to claim them, KhS assumed responsibility for them. Two of the horses were immediately adopted; the others needed additional care or training and were placed with fosters.
among the horses was five-month-old clover, who had been born on the mountaintop, and her mother, oakley. it was clear that clover was not accustomed to people, and our equine c.a.R.e. team had to start from the beginning with her handling and training. oakley was very thin and needed medical attention, rehabilitation for weight gain and time to learn to trust humans. She was only five years old, but whatever had happened or she had seen in her short life caused her to be very leery of handling. Both clover and oakley went into foster with KhS President & ceo Lori Redmon.
“getting clover used to people was one of my first priorities,” says Lori, “getting oakley to relax and trust me was the second.” after months of care, oakley and clover blossomed. oakley gained confidence and experience under saddle and turned out
to be a solid and fearless trail companion. clover learned to love new people and experiences. Both were recently adopted by wonderful families. for more on our adoptable horses, visit www.kyhumane.org/adoptable-horses.
KhS brought the remaining three horses to active heroes in Shepherdsville, a nonprofit dedicated to ending military suicides that also serves as a foster home for KhS horses. Stella, Black Jack and Bernice spent some time in foster, being cared for and connecting with veterans. Since they all needed training, KhS worked with Dumb friends League of Denver, co, to transfer the horses. They will be saddle trained and adopted.
While Stella, Black Jack and Bernice have moved on, active heroes has taken in other needy KhS foster horses. it’s a “win-win” for KhS horses and the veterans they are helping heal.
“Traumatized people and traumatized animals can relate to each other,” says Mareike yocum of active heroes. “There is something so powerful when a horse first trusts you. it is very healing to be around such magnificent animals.”
KhS appreciates our partnerships with great groups like Dumas Rescue and active heroes. We are thankful for like-minded people who share our vision to help these horses. U

The PeDigRee foundation has awarded the Kentucky humane Society a $15,000 innovation grant for a new program called “Saving Kentucky’s Shelter Dogs Project.”
This project is a behavior-training and transport program for rural county shelters in Kentucky. The goal is to help get more dogs throughout Kentucky adopted by transporting them from overcrowded rural shelters into KhS’ lifesaving behavioral rehabilitation and adoption programs.
“So often, we see dogs in rural counties who are shy and shut down. Many have never had positive experiences with humans, have never lived in a home, and have never been treated like beloved family members,” says Robin Vincent, KhS Shelter Director.
“The goal of this project is to identify dogs whom we can help to become healthy, happy dogs ready for loving homes. We are thrilled to receive funding from PeDigRee foundation for this lifesaving project.”
Since it was formed in 2008 by the makers of PeDigRee® food for dogs, PeDigRee foundation has awarded 4,740 grants worth more than $6.1 million to support the people and organizations that help dogs in need. Learn more at www.pedigreefoundation.org. U

Pet Help Line Now Taking Calls 7 Days a WeekThe Kentucky humane Society’s Pet help Line helps keep pets in their homes and out of shelters by providing struggling pet owners with advice on whatever animal issues they are experiencing. along with behavioral advice, the Pet help Line staff member offers referrals for pet friendly housing, pet food banks, low cost vet clinics and KhS assistance programs.
We have seen a big increase in the number of calls to our help Line. While our community outreach Manager, Shelby Schulz, has worked diligently to provide pet owners with the support and resources they need, we decided we needed to make some changes in order to provide our community with the best service possible.
We are excited to announce that in January, the KhS Pet help Line officially expanded! We have added two help Line coordinator positions. With three people now answering the Pet help Line, we are able to assist pet parents seven days a week. This increase in staff has also allowed us to absorb part of the KhS admissions Department by taking all admissions calls. This ensures that every pet owner is speaking to a pet expert who can provide them with all of their options when they’re struggling to keep their pet.
have a pet-related question? call or text our Pet help Line any day of the week to receive free advice and connect to local pet resources, (502) 509-4PeT or visit kyhumane.org/help. U
The Pet help Line is funded by grants from the aSPca (american Society for the Prevention of cruelty to animals) and Banfield foundation.

Looking for a fun, rewarding way to help local homeless pets? Become a Kentucky humane Society volunteer. in this article, we interview our 2016 volunteer of the year, carol florence, who works as a canine coach and supports our transport team. To learn more about all our volunteer opportunities, visit kyhumane.org/volunteer.
A Passion for AnimalsMeet the Kentucky humane Society’s Volunteer of the year for 2016, carol florence! carol began volunteering for KhS in 2011 when she retired from teaching and was looking for part-time work to keep her busy.
carol says she has always been passionate about animals and had been considering volunteering for quite some time before taking the final plunge.
“i became a volunteer because of my love for animals. My close friend Lynda was volunteering at the time and suggested i go to a KhS orientation with her since she needed a refresher course. it was just her excuse to give me the final push i needed and for that push i will be eternally grateful.”
While carol started volunteering in the Puppy Room at our Main campus, she quickly moved to walking and working with the adult shelter dogs. Today carol regularly volunteers on Mondays with her friend Barbara and is deeply loved by both KhS staff and other volunteers. She has a soft spot for the shy, wallflower dogs and says watching them transition into confident, social dogs is one of her favorite parts of volunteering.
“i think perhaps the most rewarding part of being a volunteer is sitting outside of a shy dog’s kennel, talking to them and sending treats their way to help them feel secure. When you see them transition from a shy, fearful dog to one who comes and lays their head in your lap, well there’s nothing like that!”
in addition to her work with our adult dogs, carol supports the transport team, helping to load and unload pets who have come from other shelters and rescues and will be given another chance to find their forever home here.
growing up, carol’s family had outside dogs but the only indoor pet she was allowed to have was a hamster. as soon as carol was on her own, she made sure to always have at least one dog in her life. her present dog, Dory, was adopted from Louisville Metro animal Services 10 years ago and is the love of carol’s life. carol’s a firm believer in volunteer work and hopes that more people will see the happiness volunteering can bring.
“i am so thankful to be a KhS volunteer. These last five years have been the most fulfilling of my life. if you’re considering becoming a volunteer, follow your
passion! Seeing the love and joy in a shelter dog’s eyes when you take them for a walk or simply give them some attention is the epitome of happiness. There’s no better feeling in the world than giving hope to an animal who truly needs it.” U
