The Thoughts of the Chairman

John J Shanahan, Chairman

Dear Members,

We are rapidly approaching the start of the new sporting seasons, so, I trust, that all the sporting Sections, DSA and Societies are in serious pre-season

training and that we can look forward to some new silverware in the Club.

As you will be aware, we normally hold the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Club twelve months apart in November each year, usually in the Restaurant. Our constitutional documents state that we must hold an AGM within fifteen months of the preceding one. Due to the ongoing renovations, the General Committee has decided to postpone the AGM this year until the 18th January 2018, so that we can hold it in the newly renovated 2/Fl facilities, (very likely the Happy Valley Suites) that should be opened in December this year. We will then revert to holding the AGM in November of each year as in the past.

We still operate a private box at the Happy Valley Racecourse that Members can book. There is an open bar, full buffet all for a set fee as well as the opportunity to “have a flutter” on the horses. However, there is a cost to the Club for using this facility and, for some time now, the Box has been underutilized. The Jockey Club charges us on a minimum attendance number for each race meeting, and through lack of use, we are losing money by continuing to keep this facility. If Members do not make more use of the Box, then we will have to let it go and look at alternatives, such as maybe sharing a Box with another club. I am therefore appealing to you all to make use of this facility, or we will simply have to let this extra Club facility go as being financially unviable.

From the Desk of Mark Pawley

Mark Pawley,General Manager

The Chairman has noted the start of another sporting year will shortly be upon us. It is timely, therefore, that I should remind Members, as I always do at this time, that

you should not leave valuables or personal belongings lying unattended around the Club. The Attendants on duty in the Changing Rooms on the 1/Fl, 2/Fl and in the Infield are able to secure your valuables and we can provide Day Lockers, if required. As regards the Infield and, more specifically, the Main Pitch, parents are again advised to supervise their children at all times especially from “playing” on the Pitch on Match days! Grounds Staff have been told to remove children from the “dead-ball” areas on the Main Pitch during matches, in particular on Rugby days, so, please ensure that you do not allow children onto the pitch, in the first place, to avoid any embarrassment. As a further reminder, I would also note that parental supervision of children (especially those under 11 years of age) also extends to the Sportsman’s Bar and its environs as it does to all other areas/facilities of the Club!

And, for those of you who will be playing sports this season please see the below reminder notice ensuring that you all have adequate medical and personal accident insurance.

On the food and beverage front, please see pages 10-15 in the magazine where many/all of our monthly promotions are highlighted. I would, however, make special mention of the Cloudy Bay Wine Dinner on Friday 22nd September where, given the smaller Function Room on the 1/Fl, my advice would be to book early in order to avoid disappointment.

Last, and by no means least, good luck to all our teams and players engaged in representative sports in the forthcoming season. Let’s hope you can bring home some silverware?

I look forward to seeing you all at the Club!

Mark Pawley, General Manager

NOTICE TO MEMBERS:Medical and Personal Accident Insurance

The Club would like to take this opportunity to remind all of its Members to ensure that they have adequate medical and personal accident insurance in place when playing any sport.

We would like to remind Members that it is not the Club’s responsibility to provide its Members or any other persons using its facilities, or playing on behalf of the Club, with insurance in respect of personal injuries sustained, or any other damage caused when playing sport. This applies to all sporting activities, including matches, practices and social games howsoever connected with the Club.

Anyone playing sport should consult an insurance broker to arrange comprehensive personal insurance such as:

• Medical coverage to insure the Member or player in respect of any medical treatment required; and

• General accident coverage providing payment to the Member or player for any serious accident or liability insurance for injury or damage caused to others.

Club News

6 September 2017

On Wednesday 2nd August, our Staff Caring Committee joined the Territory-wide Flag Day for the Senior Citizen

Home Safety Association (“SCHSA”). The SCHSA is a self-financing social enterprise and charitable organisation in Hong Kong which offers 24-hour personal care and emergency assistance services to the elderly and others in need. The Flag Day aims at promoting the services of Personal Emergency Link and the money raised will be allocated to help the elderly who are in financial difficulties and others in need to use the Personal Emergency Link and Mobile Link Service for free.

At around 8am on the day, a group of 25 volunteer Staff members from the Club participated in a flag selling event in Causeway Bay. To prepare them for this, Staff members attended a briefing to understand how they were going to get donations and what was their target group. They were given the history and

the background to the SCHSA, and also basic flag selling tips. They were then put into groups of 5 to proactively encourage passers by to buy the flags.

By noon, many of the flags were sold and the flag bags were filled with money. Staff members were glad that they could contribute in their small way to helping elderly people in need, and most of them found the experience interesting and rewarding. They were touched by the genuine generosity of those giving money. The spirit of helping has given the Staff members the will to join other community service opportunities in the future.

Many thanks to all the Staff members who volunteered their time for this meaningful activity.

For more information on the SCHSA, please visit their website at: https://www.schsa.org.hk/

Mr Mark Pawley bought the whole flag page, we thank him for his support.

Volunteers returned the flag bags filled with donation money back to

the collection station.

After this meaningful event, each volunteer

will receive a Certificate of Appreciation from the SCHSA.

At the beginning of June, 25 of the Squash Sections finest departed for the foreign shores of Asia’s Lion City.

Day One …

Last minute illness and injuries meant that Graham Mountford sadly would not get past the airport and similarly Dean Thompson and Nick Organ had swapped their squash racquets for their big lenses.

Several of the tour party opted for the more civilized late morning flight sporting the rather colourful Squash Section blazers!

Squash News

Singapore End Of Season TourSteffensen came away with the belt as we got off to a flying start with a final score of 18.5 to 13.

David Cross

Checking in Club the Orchard Hotel, very conveniently located for both the American and Tanglin Club, we dumped our luggage and strolled over to the American Club (AMC) for match one. This was the third time we had faced AMC in 2 years following two home fixtures things stood at 1 apiece. We were not really prepared for what hit us, losing the home advantage of the luxury of our courts in ambient temperature and switching to a sweltering 35c on courts situated outside the main club minus aircon, we began to wish we had trained for the past two months in the sauna or with the aircon switched off!

Some players suffered more than others, Leo Kwok (Absent Member) flying in from Bali had clearly not been taking his training seriously as he needed a helping hand to stay hydrated and cool down.

The welcome was very hospitable and matches were competitive and played in the best of spirits. Our advanced party lead by tour convenor Nathan L’Huillier got us off to a winning start 6.5 – 3 after a few matches . The second grouping which contained Men’s Captain Julian Tanner and Chairman DC managed to keep us in the driving seat 12.5 – 8.5.

Finally the third grouping consisting of Ladies Captain in waiting Emma Duncombe putting in a valiant effort against a strong opponent and the heavy weight battle in which Nige

Buffet dinner, prize giving and then a trip to the Club Union bar, complete with popcorn, though Nathan couldn’t grasp the concept that the popcorn was for eating rather than for the floor!

All done by midnight and after great hospitality from our friends at the AMC we headed back to the hotel, some choosing to head on after in what surely was not ideal match preparation for day two!

Day two …

A relaxing start to the day for most as matches were not due to start until 3pm. Several people taking the

opportunity to do some shopping, others gathering by the pool consuming sports drinks although the odd person indulging a little too freely in something stronger.

3pm and two buses arrived and we were split up as a group of our more experienced players headed to the British Club (BC) whilst the remainder headed to Singapore Cricket Club (SCC).

At the British Club …

This match had been pitched as British Lions versus Hong Kong Footballers, and each player would play 2 matches each.

The weather had decided to notch up to around 40c, still lacking aircon, with the back

of the courts facing the sun and a very late night for some we didn’t feel all that confident. It was perhaps a little unfortunate that our tour shirts were black/pink and lime , but we had to wear them today as they could be a step too far for Tanglin’s all white policy!

Bearing in mind we hadn’t brought anyone with us that was playing above division 8, it was a little surprising and worrying to see the brother of Keith Frith (HKFC Div 3), warming up on court, and sure enough he was a last minute replacement to play the first match. So, Stuart Gates was on court first and not surprisingly got us off to a 0-2 start, this set the pattern for the rest of the top order, Nick Stearn (who had already acquired the nickname Bambi due to his less than

steady balance was feeling the affects of day one) managed the same return, then Nige Steffensen keen to get one over on Absent Member Martin Huxley recorded another 0-2, so not looking great. DC up next and looking to set a good example won the first game against another HKFC Absent Member Anurag 15-5 but then was crushed to a 1-2 defeat and so to the rest of the team with all to do, did us proud. Fred Teng, Colin Owen, Steve Gollop and Barry Maclinden all chalked up wins with Mark Sutcliffe narrowly losing out 1-2 so the deficit reduced to 4-5.

Starting the second round, Nick again struggling to move was off court pretty quickly and looking battered but still managing a smile!

Stuart winning 2-0, DC 1-2 and Nige 0-2 going down again as we slipped to 5-8. Again it was left to the lower order with Colin, Steve, Barry and Mark for the first time nudging us ahead 9-8. So all that was left was for Fred to bring home the win, going down in the first game which had the BC rushing for the calculators and it emerged that on count back if Fred won one game we would win 22-21. This was relayed to Fred who put his all into the second game and brought it home before losing the final game.

So, that was it 9-9 and 22-21 on count back. HKFC the winners, but then, a locker room discussion between a few of HKFC players and it emerged there was some small print and count backs had been replaced by a boat race. Several hours later, and full on curry and Tiger beer, feeling confident, the idea of a boat race popped up but as the British Club guys had started to fade away, we opted for an honourable draw which could be settled by way of a rematch hopefully on home soil later in the year.

As we prepared to leave the very friendly hospitality of the BC to head back to rejoin our fellow tourists reports were coming in from

SCC that were not so encouraging….

Some players giving it everything, such as Dave Champion who was rewriting the rulebook of Squash as a contact sport, whereas KK had decided to make the most of the local refreshments!

The team eventually succumbed to a stronger and fresher SCC side and all that was left was to enjoy the hospitality and the spectacular views from the roof top.

After leaving our respective venues we headed back to the hotel, dumped our now very sweaty and smelly kit bags and we headed to Robertson Quay to rendezvous at the Boomerang Bar. Bit by bit we got our numbers up towards 20 as we mixed stories about the two matches. A few no-shows with various excuses, exhaustion, aches and pains and so on. Surely, on future tours such behaviour will result in fines and penalties being imposed. Finishing at Murphys bar back in the hotel complex people slowly drifted away.

Day three …

People feeling a little more jaded than the previous day and with matches starting earlier at 10.30am it was not looking good for the tourists. We arrived at the Tanglin Club to be greeted by two more familiar faces of Absent

Members Mike Grey former stalwart and young Tom Chamberlain.

Some of our players were overcome by the events of the weekend and took the opportunity to catch up on some sleep whilst others made the best of the opportunity to play on the jumbo doubles courts.

A bit more informal than the previous two days we scribbled our names onto a white board and played against players of a similar level. Such was the informality of the match, it was really hard to figure out who actually won,

HKFC looking like scoring more points in the singles matches, and then with Tanglin scoring more pioints in Jumbo doubles and then, some interesting accounting, I’d say it was a draw over all!

But the result was not important, it was just nice to spend time with friends from another club that boasts a similar number of courts to HKFC and sample their take on another curry buffet.

After being well looked after and all curried out, the first wave of tourists departed for home shores, as others remained for another night or two to sip Singapore Slings and with the talk already switching to possible locations for next seasons tour, Melbourne, Mumbai, Cairo and other far flung exotic places.

Squash Club Championship 2017After over 6 weeks of fierce competition with close to 180 participants competing over 5 categories and 11 titles, the 2017 Squash Club Championships concluded on 17th June 2017 with the men’s final between number one seed Rudi Willemse and number two seed Dick Lau and the ladies final a repeat of the previous year between number one seed Carmen Lee and number two seed Karen Lau.

After some fantastic squash played in both games the number one seeds both came through to win with Rudi beating Dick 3-0 to get his first title and Carmen winning 3-2 to retain her title and win for the 8th time in a row.

On the same day there were many other finals being played in a friendly, competitive manner. Malcolm Kerr the 2003 Open winner won the Men Masters plate against second seed Peter Hill and last year’s ladies masters’ winner Emma Duncombe was beaten 3-2 in a tight game versus Kate Geary. Congratulations to all finalists and winners for their excellent performances.

Many thanks go to KK who did a fantastic job of organizing his first Club champs event and making sure it all ran smoothly. Thanks also go to Head HK for discounting our prizes.

Robbie Bacon,Soccer Section

Captain

Hi everyone,

This month we have an article on the Soccer Section’s history making tour of Singapore in June, a detailed account of the exciting Summer sixes tournament, and an acknowledgment of the achievement of the Captain’s Select’s impressive showing at the HKFC CITI Soccer Sevens.

Pre-season has now kicked off for all competitive club teams, unfortunately, 1st Team Head Coach Richard Ewart has had to leave the post due to a change in his personal circumstances I, and the

Message from the Soccer Captain

With the Main Pitch under renovation, the annual HKFC Summer Sixes moved into

the Sports Hall.

The competition was still very strong with eight teams taking part. Club sides Wanderers, Albion, Lucky Mile, Rovers/Coaches and Dynamics and Sons were joined by invitational teams ANTS FC, German All Stars and Amro Abbas’s all-star team and reigning champions FFSR.

The teams were split into two groups of four, with the top two qualifying for the cup and the bottom two going into the plate.

Due to the smaller pitch space, the group

Section would like to thank Richard for his tireless efforts in recent years and for his achievements in revitalising Lucky Mile before guiding the 1st Team into the Premier League. The Section looks forward to seeing him around the Club in the not too distant future. Tony Hamilton has stepped up to the position as 1st Team Head Coach; we welcome him to the role and wish him all the best for the coming season. The new Albion manager will be announced shortly.

stages were split across two separate weeks with ANTS FC and Dynamics and Sons progressing to the cup competition from Group A while FFSR and GAS made it through from Group B.

Onto Semi Finals night and both cup games went down to the wire. FFSR vs ANTS FC ended 1-1 and was settled on penalties with FFSR winning 3-2. Dynamics and Sons vs GAS turned out to be one of the games of the tournament as the Dynamics equalised with the last kick of the game to take this match into penalties as well. keeper’s head before watching the ball trickle over the line, while a heroic save from Jim Seddon then won the shootout for Dynamics setting up a final against FFSR the following week.

Finals night began with the plate final – a Club derby between Albion and Wanderers.

Wanderers raced into a 3-0 lead but Albion struck back twice to make it 3-2 leading to a very nervy last few minutes. Wanderers managed to hold on though to take the plate.

The cup final saw another exciting affair with underdogs Dynamics and Sons shocking the spectators with how comfortable they looked

with this format. They raced into an early lead and despite a late fight back, held on for a 4-3 victory and the cup was theirs!

Many thanks to Kieran Flynn for his help refereeing the heated games on finals day and many congratulations to the winners Dynamics and Sons.

The Club’s 2017 Section Tour was marked from the get-go by its inclusivity with over

fifty members taking to the skies. Travelling for matches were five teams; two competing in the main event, two in the vets competition, and for the first time ever the Soccer Section ladies team joined the Section Tour to take part in an exhibition match; the first ever ladies football match to be played at the SCC!

Flights and Hotel all expertly organised, the early birds flew Thursday night to scope out the pitch, the conditions and most importantly ensure that the old haunts in Club Street and Orchard Road remained intact. The rest of the touring party followed dutifully on Friday, some in time for a quick session at Tanjong Beach Club, the others in time to sample SCC’s hospitality at their rooftop bar before all descended into an eventful night of launch parties, and Singapore Slings.

Saturday morning came all too quickly and brought with it one of life’s big decisions – to

sleep or to breakfast? Irrespective of the call made, no man or woman was left behind as all made it across the road for the men’s group stages and the women’s exhibition match. Tested by the brutal hot and humid conditions, the men’s teams successfully fought through to progress to their respective cup competitions.

The ladies team were history makers, playing the first ever women’s match at the SCC. It saw them come up against familiar opponents from last year’s Bali Sevens tournament. Kick-off was at midday and the Singapore heat and humidity was at its maximum which might have explained the slow start that allowed their opponents to take the lead. A competitive energy sapping match ended with a 2-0 defeat. Well done to Morgan McKenney, Amanda Sealy, Emily Chan, Emily McLaughlin, Laurence Pinnell, Mirian Duenow, Claire Harrington, Lucy McNally, Imogen Short for making history.

Saturday night was one of celebration, and tour tradition dictates a Section Tour dinner. Celebrating the days football, and one of our own Jamie Milne’s recent engagement dinner was a lively affair. Everyone moved on to Club Street to watch the 2-2 England v Scotland match.

Sunday morning brought about the early exits of two Club sides; one in the main competition after a tough draw and one vet’s side that went out on penalties. The Club’s reining vets champions made it through into the semi-finals after an inspired performance full of sprints and goals from their captain Jan Souleyman, while HKFC 1st team scrapped through on penalties after a good save from sweeper-keeper Robbie Bacon proved enough with Robert Scott, Freek Schipper and Amro Abbas slotting home their penalties. The Bundesliga trophy bizarely turned up for the semi-finals but it proved unlucky for the Club’s reigning vet champions as they lost out on penalties with Jan Souleyman this time missing the decisive kick as his effort cannoned back off the bar. HKFC 1st team took on the previous year’s main competition winners. An early save from Robbie Bacon kept the scores level before Robert Scott and Tom Halder produced two smart finishes after fine work from Ricky Wells, and Seb Beer to take the lead. Andy Russell and Kieth Boyes took over the strong defensive work of Freek Schipper and Mike Thurbon to book their place in the final for the first time. Manager Neil Picknell booked on the earlier flight shot off, leaving the team in the capable hands of Tom Shirley ably supported by Tony Hamilton.

A whirlwind start saw SCC take the lead inside fifteen seconds but the HKFC 1st Team hit back immediately; Amro Abbas slotting home. As chances flowed at both ends Robert Scott scored putting the Club side 2-1 up and well in the ascendency as half-time approached. With seconds left of the first half Seb Beer was crunched by a filthy two footed tackle in the middle of the park, incensed and rightly aggrieved, he took things too far pushing the offender in the throat tossing him back onto his derriere (those muscles are not all for show ladies and gents). Deservedly sent off for his

Club Magazine September 2017 23

SOCCER

reaction, the initial offender shockingly stayed on the field without so much as a booking. At half-time, Shirley and Hamilton settled the troops for the ten minutes of 6 v 5 action that was about to take place. SCC were kept at bay initially before a strong run by their forward culminated in an extraordinary dive from outside the box into the penalty area. The referee suitably impressed by the numerous rolls gave a penalty that was quickly dispatched to the outrage of an incensed HKFC 1st Team. The game was now at full throttle and the end to end action saw both sides’ trade two goals apiece leaving it 4-4 with two minutes to go. Unfortunately, the man advantage was telling and SCC surged forward scoring two late goals with a tiring HKFC 1sts only managing a Freek Schipper effort off the woodwork and an Andy Russell shot cleared off the line in response.

A great tour full of laughs came to end and at least from HKFC 1st Team’s perspective it was one Beer too many.

One Club success that deserves highlighting from May’s HKFC CITI Soccer Sevens was the performance of the Captain’s Select. The toughest of opening fixtures against eventual champions Leicester City resulted in a narrow 1-0

defeat, but they bounced back with an impressive 1-0 victory over New Zealand’s finest Wellington Phoenix. The final group match was a tight affair but a 1-1 draw was enough for the Captain’s Select to progress into the Cup Competition, the first Club side to do so!

The Sunday brought about a 1-0 Cup quarter final defeat to Olympique Marseille and was followed by a heart breaking 1-0 golden goal loss to Cagliari in the semi-final of the Shield.

Big congratulations to the management team of Tony Hamilton and Allan Fraser and all the players involved for this great achievement.

Gentlemen,

Great to see so many of you turn out for the opening day on 12th August, both on the pitch and at the Sportsmans after.

Since then I’ve been really impressed with everyone’s efforts during pre-season, as I have been with the manner in which captains old and new have approached their roles.

Together with some re-balancing of squads and a number of new

Men’s Captain Message

The Best Athlete Is Made During The Off SeasonAh, September! How soon you arrive… I’m sure it was July just a week ago.

At this time of the year, pre-season training feels like the worst thing ever. The silver lining however, is that everyone else feels the same way. Have you made the effort over the off-season and pre-season? Will you be game ready later this month? As a wise man once said, “I hated every minute of training, but I said, don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.”

Nobody’s Taller Than The Last Man Standing With training well underway and squad selections all but complete, the competitive aspect of league fixtures is about to begin. Given the ‘vicious heat’ will remain during the late summer weeks, its vital players and teams manage themselves and each other as well as possible. “No one is bigger than the game”. No one needs to feel the burden of carrying the team. Work together to overcome the early season pressures, then bank the points on offer. So often these early games determine end of season outcomes. Use the full squad numbers to your advantage, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!!!

additions over the summer, I begin the season as optimistic as ever for all of the teams in the HKFC men’s section. We will profile teams in more depth from next month, but for now, good luck with your first matches.

Also, please remember to wear the latest playing shirts!

See you all on the pitch soon.

Stuart Evans, Men’s Hockey Captain

Do What Is Right Not What Is EasyLet’s not forget, first and foremost, we play to enjoy ourselves. The heat of the battle will always cause friction… but that’s why a shared beer together is the perfect way to cool off and to revel in post-match banter. Win, lose or draw, “Be humble in victory, gracious in defeat.” We expect all teams to lead the way on and off the pitch all season. Please ensure our opponents and match officials are valued for the efforts and contributions they also made to the game. “We will be defined by our actions towards others, not others’ actions towards us.”

The 3 R’s“Respect for self. Respect for others. Responsibility for all their actions.”

Green cards usually reflect effort, passion, commitment, and that’s where we want the line in the sand to exist. Yellow cards reflect poor discipline. Red cards reflect the wrong attitude. There’ll be zero tolerance for poor discipline and the wrong attitude.

Talent Wins Games. Teamwork Wins Championships.Winners are grinners, and winning teams share common goals which they strive to achieve together. Most importantly, they have fun doing it together. “The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.”

HOCKEY

It seems like only yesterday that most of us were hanging up our hockey sticks and hockey shoes for the summer, and heading off to warmer (or

cooler) climes for a break from Hong Kong and to enjoy some sundowner cocktails or relaxing glasses of wine. However, for those at the helm of the Ladies’ section, last season ended and the preparations for this one began almost instantly, with meetings with coaches to collect their suggestions for movement for the coming season and work through any nits from last season.

As I write this article, pre-season is kicking off on the less-familiar turf over at Happy Valley. With slots in the heat of the day, it will be punishing for many running off the summer excesses and experiencing the oh-so-familiar hockey burn (which, incidentally, I saw on Instagram this week even Olympic Gold Medallists experience). But as we kick off this year’s pre-season training, we are looking ahead to very exciting times – the As and Bs are looking to defend their first-ever 1-2 double in the league and the Holland Cup, the Cs and Ds are looking to defend their respective league and Cup victories, the Es are looking to vanquish old foes in Division 2, the Dinos are hoping to find their form earlier this year (having finished so strong last season) and the Gs are facing the new challenge of Division 3, following their promotion. We are also delighted to welcome the HKFC Cubs (or as the HKHAWS calls them, the Hs) – our youth development team who will be starting off their Ladies’ League campaign in Division 5. As their older sisters in hockey, the rest of us are looking forward to supporting them in their inaugural season playing adult hockey!

Before we kick everything off though, I hope that, having gone our separate ways over the summer, we will all rally back together in the true HKFC fashion – on and off the pitch. Together, we will celebrate each victory and work through each loss. Together we are stronger. In our exceptionally successful season last year, it was this unity that made me most proud. I look forward to seeing more of the same this season. Because at HKFC, we are more than a Club.

See you all on the pitch and in the bar soon.

Lynsey Edgar, Ladies’ Captain

September marks the start of all things new. First of all, we have a brand new playing surface….

Thank You!!!!! Being the only full size blue hockey pitch in HK, we expect the HKFC will remain a central focus for hockey over the coming months (and years).

We welcome two fantastic new *Sponsors to the Section – Liquidnet and Norton Rose Fulbright, who we are excited to be partnered with and looking forward to being actively involved with on a number of levels over the long term. This will also mean a new look, unified playing kit for all. We also welcome new Section Members to the Club, acknowledge the appointments of new squads, captains and coaches, and the arrival of a number of new junior participants also.

Our Junior Programme remains popular. We again have a number of volunteer parent coaches on board to support the professional coaching staff, which is greatly appreciated! We remind all participants attending on Saturday mornings that children younger than 12 must be accompanied by a responsible care giver (must be age 16 or older). Our Youth Programme and Player Development Pathway (Academies) will also continue this season with greater emphasis placed on playing more fixtures as we extend our involvement and support further into the hockey community.

We are also very excited to be entering a girls’ development squad into the HKHAWS League competition for the first time. They will effectively form the 8th ladies team at the Club, but will operate from within the Junior Player Development Pathway programme. The girls selected will be given the opportunity to represent the Club in regular weekly fixtures and ultimately have the opportunity to progress

further up through the squads and divisions as they develop. There will be some talented players to keep an eye on for sure.

Given the huge success of the Hockey Section’s inaugural Charity Ball, the Guv Dillon Fund Committee will again host the Guv Dillon Charity Hockey Ball at the Club this season - Save the Date: 10th March 2018 in the HKFC Sports Hall. The ‘giving back’ Community Coaching aspect will also continue this season with the inclusion of a hockey focus for Y9/10 students at CSBS Mrs. AW Boon Haw Secondary School in Tuen Mun, and further direct involvement with Operation Breakthrough.

The Section’s two other signature events, the Mini Hockey Festival (2nd Dec) and the HKFC Hockey 6s (Easter 2018) will again feature as will a number of clinics, events, and new initiatives to be developed this season. It’s once again with great excitement we look forward to a cracking season of hockey. Will this be the season our men’s teams dominate as well as our women’s teams were able to last season? Who will be our top goal scorers? How many will tour Bangkok, Singapore, Jakarta again this season? A number of our Club players will look to represent HK teams this season, as will umpires, coaches and administrators. The Section is very well represented on all HKHA committees and overall showing a huge amount of willingness to support the sport in HK and in Asia. After all, with one of Asia’s finest clubs as your home court, why wouldn’t you?

See you all pitch side

The new season is upon us, and we have just finished Senior trials. I would like to say thank you to everyone who was involved in

organising and running the trials, it is a big operation to make sure everyone gets a chance to shine on court. Thank you also to the selection committee, who had the huge task of selecting the best talent for each team, especially with so many new players coming out to trial this season.

We are now part way through the very short Seniors preseason, and it is time to put in the fitness work and court practice, with the first senior matches on 25th September. Please come along and support the teams, it is always nice to see players from other teams and other sports watching on the sidelines. I’d like to wish all of the HKFC netball teams the very best start to the 2017-2018 season.

Juniors Term 1 is also quickly approaching, with trials taking place this month. If you would like to get involved with helping at juniors netball, please contact the Junior Convenor ([email protected]), who is always looking for helpful parents and coaches!

Junior Netball LeagueShootathon 2017 raises a huge $72,690

Building on last year’s inaugural Shootathon, the 2017 Shootathon was another, huge success! Once again, we

chose two child focused charities; Angels for Orphans, who we will directly work with later this year on an outing for disadvantaged children in Hong Kong, which will be wholly funded by the money raised through the Shootathon. The Changing Young Lives Foundation was this year’s second charity, which focuses on providing support to struggling local families. After last year’s success, we set a respectable target of $50,000 and I’m pleased to report, we far surpassed that amount. We raised a total of $72,690. A little less than last year, which we hear was due to parents getting wise and not sponsoring per goal! But a great total nonetheless.

The girls were tasked with asking family and friends to sponsor them for scoring as many goals as they could within 10 minutes. The girls were able to choose which charity they were fundraising for, with the majority choosing to split their sponsor money between our two charities. The girls once again excelled themselves and needed no convincing to do their best to benefit children less fortunate.

Sharp ShootingIn addition to the charity element, the girls were also ‘shooting’ for glory – the winners in each category were crowned champions. The Junior section has some prolific shooters who managed to chalk up staggering goal tallies. Under 14s team, Rainstorms bagged the prize for the most goals scored, whilst the individual awards for the most goals scored went to the following:

6 & Under Aoife Ryan and Charlotte Dunn

8 & Under Imogen Bater

10 & Under Elsie Hulme and Tia Porter

special Shout out for the amazing amounts they raised;

Imogen Bater $4,330, Imogen Benote $2,220, The Sylvester sisters trio of Natalie, Ruby and Kathleen, who between them raised a whopping $8,750! Word has it that next year Dad will not be sponsoring per goal! Junyi Perrett raised a fabulous $5,123 and the fundraising power house that is the Powell sisters, brought in $11,300 between them with Natasha just pipping Isabella to scoop the award for the most money raised. As well as the satisfaction of knowing they’ve contributed to really worthy causes, the girls were also presented with certificates.

Raising $14,204 between them, our young Icebreakers team will be heading to Pizza Express to enjoy the reward for being the

highest fundraising team. Well done girls – enjoy your pizza!

We were honoured to have representatives from ‘Angels’ in attendance; Wendy Cramond, Nova Thomas, Emilie Clariet and Chief Angel, Suzanne Saddler, together with girls from Po Leung Kuk (charity supported by Angels). From the Changing Young Lives Foundations, we were delighted to welcome Deborah Li. The girls were genuinely proud and amazed at their efforts. Gasps of disbelief, followed by cheers and applause rang out as the girls realised they had again, knocked the fundraising out of the park. To celebrate the fabulous efforts of our netball girls, the Club kindly picked up the tab for a spectacular cake, which the girls promptly demolished with the same gusto with which they approached the Shootathon!

Thank you!As is always the case with these events, huge amounts of work went into the planning, preparation and execution of the Shootathon. Thanks are due to many; Firstly, to the many parents who helped with goal counting, we couldn’t have done it without you! – Apologies for the stiff necks the following day! Thanks to Mark Pawley, Mike Wood and the GC for the venue and the cake. Our wonderful Coaches – thank you for getting on board, encouraging the girls to get involved and being flexible with training on the day. The ever-organised Mary Vlogianitis, Alexia Rutkowsi, Gina Henderson, Adele Rooney and Beauella Purcell were all a terrific help on the night as were the Sports Desk Staff. Whilst F&B’s Dominique Artigolle, Winki, and Stephan all ensured the presentation ran smoothly - kudos and huge appreciation to all.

Walmsley Cup on KSC South Course Thursday 29th June 2017

What a scorching hot day we had for this years annual Walmsley Cup event, which was a very welcome reprieve from the wet

tropical conditions that HK has been subjected to lately.

Twenty players were vying for both men’s and women’s trophies as well as the usual nearest pins, longest drives and best gross score prizes.

The first group to tee off consisted of myself, Duncan Spooner, Jonny Brock and Dallas Reid. We had a game of two halves within our group, with Duncan and myself winning the front 9, with Dallas and Jonny securely pounding us on the back 9 ending in a draw.

The second group consisted of Deacon Manu, Diana Li, Tom McColl and newcomer to the Golf Society Andrew Perret. This group managed some great golf with a nearest pin on hole 5 for Deacon and Diana’s piercing scream to celebrate her birdie on hole 11 (yes we all heard it) and some great stableford scores too from both Deacon and Diana.

Great to see Allan Hay back playing at the Society events. He was playing alongside

Michael Hamlyn, Steve Lee and John Banks. John was complaining of various unfriendly bounces in the middle of the fairway but they must have helped instead of hindered him to give him 33 stableford points.

Jessica Lam headed the 4th group to tee off which also consisted of Cathy Neish, Mary Soo and Malou Waldie. Cathy was putting like a demon possessed with numerous 15 + foot putts finding the bottom of the cup.

The last to tee off were social players Dominic Ng, Angela Koo, Lina Adrianse and Johnny Lam with only Lina and Johnny competing for the trophy. They managed 12 and 24 points respectively. Well done Lina as this was only her second time playing for stableford points.

A notable mention must go the ladies for not being able to hit the fairway on longest drive hole. Oops!

The women’s cup went to a 3 way count back between Cathy Neish, Malou Waldie and Diana Li who all scored 36 points. After several count backs the overall winner was Cathy with Malou pipping Diana for second place. Fantastic competition ladies.

It was looking like the event was going to be rained off as we approached KSC in the bus and the torrential rain drenching a few of us before we even boarded the boat. Luckily the

rain and thunder eased and we were allowed to tee off in a little drizzle which also stopped with the sun peaking through the rain clouds for parts of the round.

Surprisingly only 16 players were competing in this years event for the Summer Cup trophy.

Summer Cup KSC East CourseSaturday 8th July 2017

The leading group were myself, Mark Suttcliffe, Dallas Reid and Nick Allen. With this being Mark’s first ever Golf Society outing, Dallas seized the opportunity to put a small wager between himself and Nick taking on myself and Mark in a match play event, very sneaky Dallas. I managed to shoot an 8 on the first hole and told my partner Mark that it was going to be a good round in an attempt to reassure him. And what a great round it was. With Mark and myself going 2 up after 9 holes

The men’s event was also a tightly fought contest with John Banks coming in 3rd place with 33 points, Dallas Reid keeping up his normal position in every tournament he plays with 2nd place with 36 points and this years men’s winner was Deacon Manu with 37 points.

Best gross score for the women’s was Jessica Lam with her 102 and Jonny Brock for the mens with his 78.

Nearest pins and longest drive winners were as follows.NP # 2 Allan HayNP # 5 Deacon ManuNP # 11 Tom McCollNP # 16 Phil HeadLD M # 4 Phil HeadLD W # 4 No winner

Most of the players then made their way back to the Club where the Golf Society AGM was being held and the new committee voted in. There was a great spread of food and drinks for everyone and a few of us then strayed down to the Sportsman’s Bar afterwards to continue the celebrations.

See you all at the next golf event.

Happy Golfing.

and managing to win 4 and 3 after 18 holes. A great performance against a very, very strong and experienced partnership.

Second to tee off were Lucia Lee, Peggy Chan, Mary Soo and Allyson Ko and they made a great job of keeping pace with our 4 ball. Allyson and Mary were competing for the trophy and both managed respectable scores off 23 and 28 stableford points.

Brian MacDougall, Richard Neish, Anatole Le and Doan Le teed off next with both Anatole and Doan having great rounds and accumulating 33 and 34 points respectively.

Clearwater Bay Outing Monday 24th July

Dallas Reid

After the weeks of dreadful weather, and Sunday’s brief number 8 typhoon, we were fortunate to arrive at Clearwater Bay with the rain just passing and to spend the day under blue skies.

This was our second visit of the year to Clearwater Bay, which is always a treat and a popular outing. Despite the challenging weather conditions the course always seems to be in very good condition even with the greens being recently sanded.

Several of the competitors responded with some outstanding scores. TK Leung opened up on the 1st hole with a 270 yard drive and to show this was not a fluke hit another enormous drive down the third to comfortably win the men’s long drive competition.

Anatole Le displayed fewer fireworks, but nothing exploded in his hands either. He kept the ball nicely in play to shoot a personal best of 77 amassing an impressive 42 points despite slightly panicking at the end of his round when he realized that he was likely to break 80.

Paul Ng has been spending plenty of time in the simulator, with golf coaches, so it was nice to see him being rewarded with an excellent round of 80, narrowly missing the top spot with a very impressive 41 points. Matt Burke came in with a less spectacular 38 points but a solid round over a treacherously tight golf course to claim third spot. One can only feel sorry for Alan Homeming and Owen Davis who scored potentially winning scores of 35 points and came away with nothing! Well almost. As all the top gross scores had already won stableford prizes, this allowed Alan to sneak in with the best gross. Well done Alan!

Congratulations to all the winners.

The last group to play were Cathy Neish, Lana Woo, Elsa Lee and Johnny Lam. Cathy and Elsa had a fantastic battle and both managed

to score 35 points each, but was it enough to win one of the top 3 place trophies?

With all the scorecards in, it was a count back for 3rd place between Cathy and Elsa who both had 35 points, but with Cathy securing 3rd place after 3 count backs.

As per usual Dallas managed to secure second place with 36 points and this years winner went to myself with a whopping 40 stableford points. Well done me!

As is the custom for the winner of each event, I made sure that I bought plenty of beers for all the players for the bus ride back to the Club which was made even more exciting as Dallas had arranged a slightly delayed live showing of the England v New Zealand final test rugby match which really was very exciting to watch.

Another great day out on the golf course.

Look forward to seeing you all at the next event.

Happy Golfing.

Badminton News

Mat Shuker won the Over 35 Category Men’s Singles in the BOCHK Badminton Championships 2017. Mat was the only representative entered by the Club in this category and having retired as a professional player with a world ranking, Mat was playing the event for the first time in Hong Kong.

very drifty conditions, was on a knife edge with a grueling rally at 11-8 that gave Mat some confidence that he was probably the fitter player. Although he lost the first game 21-17, it was clear that Mat was still very much in the match and had the better end for the second game which he won 21-19. Into the decider and with the match already 45 minutes long, neither player could take the advantage until Mat opened a 15-11 lead. This proved decisive, breaking the mental strength of Wai Man and seeing Mat win the final game 21-18. A fantastic result for Mat in his debut in Hong Kong.

The Road to beign a ChampionEmily Chow and Chun Tin Lam won the Mixed Doubles championship in the Elementary Division of the BOCHK Badminton Championships 2017. Chun Tin tells his story:

Emily and Chun Tin received their champion trophies.

For the first time Emily and I entered the Mixed Doubles competition in the Hong Kong Annual Badminton Championships 2017. In order to be well prepared for the tournament, we frequently came to the Club for badminton practice and workout exercise.

We reached the semi-final after several rounds of matches. Since our opponents team in the semi-final had two different events to play during the same time slot, our match was postponed by almost an hour. We made use of the waiting time to watch and analyze the way our opponents played looking for any weakness in them. As it turned out, when we played we quickly held down our opponents in the early stage of our match with speed and power as they were still a bit worn out from their earlier match. We took the first game 21-13. In the second game, our opponents

played offensively and the score was very close throughout. Finally, we won the second game 23-21 and made it to the final.

Our match was scheduled for 2 pm on the finals day. Emily and I decided to come to the Club in the morning for practice and warm-up. After that, we went from the Club around noon to the match venue with sufficient time for pre-match preparation. The age and skill level of our opponents were both similar to ours. We led the first game with offensive play right from the start, taking it 21-14. Having changed court for the second game, we found ourselves making many unforced errors and were beaten 9-21. We then reviewed our tactics, but were still down by 8-10 in the early part of the third and deciding game. After the interval, we changed our tactics taking steady control of our strokes and

Mat with the champions trophy.

Mat and Wu Chung in the semi-finals

Mat comfortably took the lead in the first few rounds of matches against his opponents beating them straight two games. Into the semi-finals, Mat faced a

former world ranked player Wu Chung who played a highly unorthodox game anticipating many shots correctly. Mat fell behind in both games but managed to turn them around and won.

The final was held on 25 June and Mat faced four times champion Wai Man Leung and number one seed who is known for playing a very tactical game. The first game, held again in

turned the game around. Finally, we sealed victory by winning the game 21-17 and won the championship. Our thanks to those Society members who came and supported us.

36 September 2017

Our First Team participated in various events at the BOCHK Badminton Championships 2017 and achieved our best results ever. Emily Chow and Lam Chun Tin won the Mixed Doubles in the Elementary Division. Mat Shuker won the Men’s Singles in the Over 35 Category. Jaff Lo and Gavin So were 2nd runners-up in the Men’s Singles in the Over 45 Category and Mixed Doubles in the Intermediate Division respectively. Other players also did well with several of them reaching the quarter finals or the round of last sixteen. Their hard work in training has paid off. Congratulations and well done!

First Internal Doubles League Successfully ConcludedThe last match of Internal Doubles Leagues 2017 was the Mixed Doubles where Peggy Lee and Mat Shuker played against Emily Chow and Chun Tin Lam. With this match the first Internal Doubles Leagues organized by the Badminton Society for badminton fans of the Club was successfully concluded. The winners are as follows:

Winners (from left to right) Chun Tin, Mat, Gavin, Jaff and Emily, with Badminton Society Chairman Ryan (fourth from left).

Mat came to rescue a tricky return from Emily and Chun Tin, as Peggy was protecting the net.
