Cybersecurity: National grid operator in Northern Europe
37
Hitachi Energy’s customer is a
national grid operator in
Northern Europe controlling
15,000 kms of power lines,
160 substations, switching
stations and 16 overseas
power connections.
Customer’s challenge was that
they didn’t have the ownership
of the substation buildings and
therefore control of the
physical access was not in
their hands.

Cybersecurity: European transmission system operator (TSO)
38
Hitachi Energy’s customer is
one of Europe’s main
transmission system operators
(TSO) and responsible for
developing and managing
high-voltage and very high-
voltage electrical
transmissions throughout its
country. At the same time, they
are also the majority owner of
the country’s high-voltage
transmission grid.

Oil and Gas: Total Lindsey Oil Refinery (LOR)
44
LOR was established in the
1960s on a site five miles from
the Humber River estuary and
was the first UK refinery to
process North Sea Oil. It is
currently the country’s third
largest oil refinery, processing
10 millions tons of crude per
year – the equivalent of
200,000 barrels per day (bpd).

Water : Turkey Irrigation Project
45
Korkuteli is typical; until the
1960s the lowlands were
home to sheep and goat
herders as the otherwise-
fertile ground were too dry for
growing crops, but with proper
irrigation, farmers are now
growing fruits, grain, and
vegetable oils, thanks to a
network of open canals. Those
canals are getting old now,
and suffer from leakage into
the soil as well as evaporation,
so the General Directorate of
State Hydraulic works decided
to rebuild the network
