• and Volt-VAr management

• Location: Switzerland

• Customer: EKS and ZHAW

• Completion date: 2018

• The developed solution is based on an Hitachi

Energy LV-LVR (Line Voltage Regulator),

extended with an additional control logic running

on cost-effective remote terminal units (RTU540

and RTU520) and using a Hitachi Energy

TropOS wireless communication to two Hitachi

Energy TRIO PV inverters in order to coordinate

the power production according to the actual

conditions in the grid.

• Implemented voltage control substantially

improves the power quality in the grid.

• The local LVR control results in the desired

decrease of voltage in the “downstream” grid

branches independent of the end-customers

behavior and is fully under control of the grid

operator

Cybersecurity: National grid operator in Northern Europe

37

Hitachi Energy’s customer is a

national grid operator in

Northern Europe controlling

15,000 kms of power lines,

160 substations, switching

stations and 16 overseas

power connections.

Customer’s challenge was that

they didn’t have the ownership

of the substation buildings and

therefore control of the

physical access was not in

their hands.

Cybersecurity: European transmission system operator (TSO)

38

Hitachi Energy’s customer is

one of Europe’s main

transmission system operators

(TSO) and responsible for

developing and managing

high-voltage and very high-

voltage electrical

transmissions throughout its

country. At the same time, they

are also the majority owner of

the country’s high-voltage

transmission grid.

system operator

• Completion date: 2017

• IEC 60870-5- 104 secure communication based

on the IEC 62351-3 standard and Simple

Network Management Protocol version 3

(SNMPv3)

• IEC 60870-5-104 communication protocol

combined with TLS encryption based on the IEC

62351-3 standard. The advantage of this kind of

communication is the end-to-end encryption

between RTUs and the network control centers

• Highest levels of cyber security, including user

access control, security logging, hardware

hardening, device monitoring and secure

communication based on standards

Migration: ZESCO

40

The national power utility of

Zambia, ZESCO, took the

chance to upgrade their

installed RTU211 to the new

RTU511. The customer

wanted to profit from the

functionalities of high-end

RTUs while keeping the

significant number of installed

RTU211.

About the project Solution

• Project name: Migration project

• Location: Zambia

• Customer: ZESCO

• Migration of the installed RTU211 to the state-of-

the-art RTU511 in only a few steps. The

migration kit 511MKM01 provided the brand-new

CMU module and a new housing which make

the migration possible in combination with the

appropriate license

• Migration allows to implement new features and

capabilities to existing RTU211 base with only a

minimum of time and effort.

Communication: EDS500 Modems (Hong Kong)

41

With a population of over

seven million people, Hong

Kong is among the most

densely populated places on

the planet. Rows of tower

blocks, terraced together into

a single monolith, pack

millions of people into the

world’s most valuable real

estate, and place an

enormous strain on electrical

infrastructure.

Oil and Gas: Total Lindsey Oil Refinery (LOR)

44

LOR was established in the

1960s on a site five miles from

the Humber River estuary and

was the first UK refinery to

process North Sea Oil. It is

currently the country’s third

largest oil refinery, processing

10 millions tons of crude per

year – the equivalent of

200,000 barrels per day (bpd).

Water : Turkey Irrigation Project

45

Korkuteli is typical; until the

1960s the lowlands were

home to sheep and goat

herders as the otherwise-

fertile ground were too dry for

growing crops, but with proper

irrigation, farmers are now

growing fruits, grain, and

vegetable oils, thanks to a

network of open canals. Those

canals are getting old now,

and suffer from leakage into

the soil as well as evaporation,

so the General Directorate of

State Hydraulic works decided

to rebuild the network
