“Daar is minstens twee keer ’n maand ’n ongeluk by hierdie punt.”

’n Bejaarde man is verlede maand dood na

’n botsing by die kruising.

ongelukke by die kruising. “Tydens spitsverkeer is motoriste in

“Spoed is ’n groot probleem in Dr Swanepoel.

Train commuters in the north of Pretoria were left stranded on Monday morning as cable theft grounded the service.

The Metrorail train service between Mabopane-Belle Ombre, De Wildt-Belle Ombre and Pretoria North was “temporarily grounded”, said Gauteng Metrorail in a statement on Monday.

This was caused by cable theft at Wintersnest train station and damaged overhead wires at the Wolmerton train station.

“As a result of this theft, there is no overhead power supply in the affected sections. Mabopane and De Wildt trains from Pretoria station are turning around at Pretoria North,” the statement said.

Metrorail acting provincial manager Goodman Matampi said the vandalism and theft of railway infrastructure negatively affected the “punctual train service delivered to commuters”.

“At the moment, there is no commuter

train service in Mabopane and De Wildt,” Matampi said.

“Metrorail is making alternative arrangements in the form of buses to move commuters from the two affected stations to Pretoria North.”

He said only commuters with valid train tickets would be allowed on the arranged buses.

Matampi urged people to report cable theft at their nearest police station and to security guards in the area.

“Metrorail technical teams are already at the affected stations assessing the damage and will start repair work soon,” he said.

“Metrorail management sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused.”

Power outages were also reported on Sunday evening in several areas in Pretoria North.

Ward councillor Yolanda Duvenage confirmed that a lightning strike had caused a power surge.

“Power has been restored to the affected homes,” Duvenage said.

Dry blankets poured in after the premises of Wollies Animal Project in the north of Pretoria was flooded last month.

The shelter, which takes care of abandoned animals, resorted to social media to ask for assistance after its kennels were swamped by heavy rains.

The response was a stream of donations of dry blankets and other means to keep the animals warm and dry.

Cilla Trexler of Wollies said people also offered their help to prevent future floods.

“People helped to dig trenches next to the kennels to help channel away the water,” said Trexler.

“More soil was also donated to help keep the water out.”

The soil would be used to level parts of the terrain to further prevent flooding and the pooling of excess rainwater.

She said cement flooring beneath the Wendy houses (that serve as shelter for the animals) would also help to keep the water out.

Trexler thanked all who contributed.“We are always grateful for the rain, of

course, and grateful for the people who continue to support our cause.”

A new furry resident has found a home in Pretoria North.

The Guide Dog Association (GDA) introduced guide dog Demi alongside her new owner, Tamlyn Bell, to residents and local stores in the area last month.

GDA spokesperson Pieter van Niekerk praised the visually impaired Bell and Demi for the successful completion of their training.

“Tamlyn and Demi also passed their aftercare training,” he said.

“The two can now travel together on their own.”

Bell recently qualified for her first guide dog.

Demi, a black labrador, was raised and trained

at the GDA training facility in Paulshof,

Sandton. Before she was 12 months old

and ready for training, Demi was fostered by Mari Bezuidenhout and Michael Houston, who described her as a kind, gentle girl who loved children and “giving paw”.

The now fully trained Demi has made a home with her newfound mom.

Bell said: “She is a wonderful dog and is crazy about water. She is fitting in nicely into our daily routines.

“We recently went out alone to a nearby store – so I am very, very proud of her.”

Van Niekerk said all new guide-dog owners were trained at the GDA facility in Sandton.

“Then the trainer continues the training in the owner’s home for up to 10 days.”

He said the guide dog was introduced to the streets and local stores and places the owner would regularly visit.

Bell said many of the local shops readily accepted Demi.

“We haven’t been to the larger supermarkets yet, but I’m so thankful for all the support from the local shops near my home,” she said.

GDA was founded in Johannesburg in 1953 by Gladys Evans.

Evans, who had failing eyesight, brought the first guide dog – Sheena – to Africa, after training at the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association in the UK.

Van Niekerk said the people who applied for a guide dog were carefully matched to the dog to ensure they suited each other.

“Owning a guide dog is a life-changing experience for someone with visual impairment.

“It is an all-inclusive package of independence, mobility and companionship – a priceless gift,” said Van Niekerk.

He asked local communities and businesses to show their support and accommodate guide dogs and their owners.

He also asked locals to respect the guide dogs and their owners by not causing them an unnecessary distraction.

“If you happen to encounter Tamlyn and Demi on their daily routes, please do not distract, call, pat or feed Demi.”

The GDA seeks to breed dogs that have the ability to become good guide, service and autism support dogs.

Labrador retrievers most consistently exhibit the desired characteristics of stability, initiative, docility, adaptability and a robustness that helps them to deal with the demands of working in a variety of environments.

OPINION www.rekordnorth.co.za6 PRETORIA NORTH REKORD APRIL 20, 2018

ouers laat wonder.

“Eventually the app will include animals from shelters all over the country,” said co-founder Ben Bredenkamp.

Along with his brother Brandon and Cornel Rautenbach, the three founded PICK a PET to provide people with an easily accessible online store to view and adopt a pet from a local shelter.

Bredenkamp said his brother inspired the idea for an adoption site in December last year.

“Brandon is really passionate about animals and with Cornel’s help we were able to make his idea become reality.”

Bredenkamp compared the app, which can be downloaded from the App Store, with the popular online

dating site Tinder.Instead of finding a date, users

can find a lifelong friend and animal companion.

“PICK a PET provides information on different animals and their breeds as well as their personalities,” said Bredenkamp.

“We have a forum where you can connect with other adopters and/or pet owners if you would like to ask any questions or give any advice that you may have acquired

from personal experience.”

The website also includes a donation page linking directly to all the contributing shelters’ websites, where people can make donations to assist shelters in helping homeless animals.

With an ad like this, who can bet against the app being an smashing hit: I am a single

beauty looking for true love. I am not just a pretty face, but intelligent as well. If you like long walks or snuggling in front of the TV – then I’m the one for you. I am loyal, playful, a great listener and run on four paws too.

For more information, visit www.pickapet.co.za or see the PICK a PET Facebook page.

A gorilla gone wrongBig meets bigger in an action blockbuster starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson – one of the three new movies opening at Nu Metro cinemas in Pretoria this week.

Rampage (13LV) Showing at the 4DX theatres at Menlyn

Park; also in 3D at all other cinemas. Primatologist Davis Okoye (Dwayne

Johnson), a man who keeps people at a distance, shares an unshakeable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth.

But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry mutates this gentle ape into a raging creature of enormous size. To make matters worse, it is soon discovered there are other similarly altered animals.

As these newly created alpha predators tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with a discredited genetic engineer to secure

an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield – not only to halt a global catastrophe, but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.

Here comes the Grump (7-9PG) Showing at all Nu Metro cinemas.Spending summer vacations at Grandma

Mary’s amazing Groovyland Theme Park was an awesome experience for an unassuming boy like Terry.

With the help of Grandma’s overzealous imagination, he could dream about visiting enchanted lands filled with psychedelic walking flowers, talking balloons, clumsy dragons and maybe even a princess or two.

But now, his grandmother is gone and the theme park is threatened with closure.

Desperately unhappy, Terry finds himself clinging on to the old times and his memories of her hippy-dippy stories.

A tiny bit of magic left behind on one of the theme park rides sweeps him away and before he knows it, he finds himself stranded in a very real, very cool, very magical land in this new animated adventure!

But one that certainly isn’t as carefree or as happy as Grandma had lead him to believe – an evil wizard, Grump, has cast a spell of gloom over the land and now smiling and laughter are a thing of the past. Can Terry save the day and get back home?

Roman J. Israel, Esq. (13LP) Showing at Nu Metro Menlyn Park only. Denzel Washington and Colin Farrell star

in this striking crime-drama centred around the underbelly of the overburdened Los Angeles criminal court system.

A driven, idealistic defense attorney’s life is upended when his mentor, a civil rights icon, dies.

When he is recruited to join a firm led by one of the legendary man’s former students – the ambitious lawyer George Pierce – and begins a friendship with a young champion of equal rights, a turbulent series of events ensues that will put the activism that has defined Roman’s career to the test.

According to a recent report, 65% of the waste (around 38 million tons) that South Africa creates is recyclable.

That amounts to an estimated R17 billion a year’s worth of resources that could be redirected into the economy.

“It is so important that we look after the environment,” says Adrian Goslett, regional director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa.

“We encourage homeowners to live a greener lifestyle – if not for the benefit of the environment, then at least for the benefit of their own pockets.”

But where does one start? Read on ...Change the way you buyConsider the content of your waste

bin: plastic shampoo bottles, plastic food containers and a rainbow of colourful disposable razors and toothbrushes, right?

“Purchasing products in bulk can reduce the waste created by throwing away smaller containers more frequently,” Goslett advises.

“If you are aiming to become a zero-waste household, you want to find items with no packaging waste and items that can be reused or refilled when its contents has been used.”

Create your own compost heapThere is so much kitchen and garden

waste that can be used in your own backyard. Items such as egg boxes, old newspapers, teabags and coffee grounds, egg shells and veggie scraps can be used to create a great fertiliser mix.

Avoid bad smells by adding the proper mix of materials to the compost heap.

Avoid too much nitrogen-based material (green waste), make sure there is enough aeration and not too much moisture, and mix the heap often.

DIY where possible“Another way to reduce household

waste is to buy fewer consumable products each month,” says Goslett.

Cleaning products are a prime example.

There are many simple cleaning solutions that you can make in a reusable glass container at home that will save this waste.

White vinegar diluted in water, for example, is great for cleaning all sorts of surfaces.

Going green is not always easy. While it might take a while to get used to these new habits, the long-term effects are worth the effort.

Go green and your pocket will benefit

ProPerty News10 www.rekordnorth.co.za/property | APRIL 20, 2018

While you cannot control contributors to property prices like crime and interest rates, you will be glad to know there are so many affordable and easy ways to enhance the value, says Steve van Wyk, MD at Seeff Centurion.

These include: 1. Ensure your property is maintained

regularly.2. Repair “small problems” like roof tiles,

leaking taps and gutters and replace bulbs

in light fixtures and vanities.3. Check things like peeling paint, roof

leaks, cracked tiles, cracks in plaster, damp, leaking toilets, broken cupboard latches, leaking gutters and broken fascia boards, silicone around baths and showers, light bulbs and cracked windows before show days. If these are in a bad condition it could create a bad first impression.

4. Replace outdated fittings from time

to time, like upgrading door handles, light switches and light fittings.

5. Keep the driveway neat and tidy and consider minor renovations if necessary.

6. Maintain the garden and make sure that the lawn is mowed regularly.

7. The swimming pool should be clean and the water clear.

8. Carpets should be cleaned, especially if you allow pets into the home.

How to enhance a home

Seeff MD in Pta East Gerhard van der Linde dispels some misconceptions of people selling their homes.

I will eventually get my full asking price, even if it is unrealistic

Buyers will not pay more than a property is worth.

It is therefore critically important not to list a property at an unrealistic value.

My home will sell faster if it is on open mandate

When you give an agent sole mandate, they will be more motivated to sell because there is no competition.

I need to revamp my home completely before listing

Although it would be advisable to declutter as much as possible and to make minor reparations to your home before a show day, a full revamp is not necessary in most cases.

The mistakes often made

People who have a healthy relationship with money understand that saving has very little to do with the size of your bank account, says FNB head of education.

Eunice Sibiya says most people would like to save because they understand the financial benefits.

“But saving usually takes the backseat simply because of the hesitation to make sacrifices.

“Understandably, consumers are hard pressed financially, but the essence of saving is starting small then building up from there.

“If you are unable to save, perhaps it’s time to look of the relationship you have with money,” adds Sibiya.

Sibiya believes these could be some of the reason you are unable to save:

Poor attitude towards moneyA poor relationship with money is

characterised by aimless spending on things that will have no bearing on your long-term financial future.

This may include taking debt to finance your lifestyle or overspending on things such as entertainment and clothes.

Pay attention to how and what you spend your money on.

Ask yourself what value you are getting from such expenses.

Lack of financial goals

Starting small the essence of savingWithout setting goals you are unlikely

to get very far with your finances because money leaves your account as quickly as it comes in because of frivolous spending.

When you have goals and are fully committed, you are able to use your money according to your goals.

Not asking for helpIt’s advisable to consult a

financial advisor to help you plan your financial future, especially if you are struggling to prioritise.

Not being able to save now does not mean the situation cannot be turned around.

For example, if you are over-indebted you may have to focus on clearing your debt before you start saving.

Being governed by YoloYes, it’s true that you only live once (yolo)

but this also means you have a single lifetime to make your money work for you.

It’s important to take the future into consideration when dealing with money, if you don’t save for both short and long-term goals you may end up financially constrained in future.

Have financial future plans and avoid living in the moment.

ProcrastinationSaving is a necessity, and this applies to

everyone whether you have a lot of money or not, you still need to save.

TERMS & CONDITIONSCONDITIONS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF ADVERTISING: Rekord reserves the right to withhold or cancel any advertisement order accepted. NB: Rekord accepts responsibility for only one faulty insertion. Advertisers are advised to check their advertisements for possible errors on the fi rst day of publication. NO free insertion will be given on the grounds of small typographical errors that do not derogate from the advertisement. NB: Cancellation of a placement order must meet the following conditions to be eff ective: • The cancellation must be in writing • It must reach the Advertising offi ce of Capital Media at least 3 (three) days prior to the printing date • A cancellation number must be obtained from Capital Media • Any telephonic correspondence must be confi rmed in writing to be valid • Capital Media may cancel an advertising agreement if the advertiser fails to pay his/her account within the agreed time.

Capital Media (Pty) Ltd renders a service to our clients to advertise their products and services. However, we cannot be held accountable for any misleading claims or damages that result from the use of said advertised products and services.

Readers should therefore be cautious in responding to any advertisements, in particular fi nancial and business related opportunities, unless a thorough investigation has been conducted into the business practices of the advertiser concerned.

Rekord experiences many problems with clients requesting us to comply within any possible way, to give preference to their advertisements versus that of other clients. This leads to advertisements starting with A1, Attention, or 000. It makes no sense to the reader and prevents them from making logical conclustions as to what the content of the advertisements is about. It spoils the presentation of our classifi ed advertisements and also confuses the reader, who wants to see at a glance what an advertisement is about and make a decision regarding his needs. We believe that our capable representatives can help with good advice in presenting your advertisement with original and fresh ideas.

Some of the top names in South African netball gathered in Pretoria recently to celebrate the 80th birthday of local netball legend Lynette Ferreira.

Ferreira, who was born in 1938, has been involved in South African netball for 73 years – as player, umpire, coach, selector and administrator.

The netball legend was largely responsible for the introduction of netball at the Pretoria Teachers Training College.

At that stage, Afrikaans colleges and schools in what was then the Transvaal, preferred to play ‘korfbal’, but Ferreira, who was passionate about the sport, persuaded the principal of the college to allow her to start a netball club.

He agreed, with one proviso – no money would be made available.

So, Ferreira and her friends used their precious pocket money to buy netball balls and the rest of the equipment needed. They even painted the lines themselves.

Ferreira was a member of the Springbok netball team that took part in the first World Netball Cup in 1963, as well as the teams that competed in 1967, 1970 and 1973.

South Africa was then banned from taking part in international sport and it was not until 1994 that the country was once again allowed to play international netball.

When she turned to umpiring and coaching, she proved to be just as good and excelled in both. In 1976, she was awarded the State President’s Merit Award as the Coach of the Year.

During the years of isolation, Ferreira worked hard to keep the sport alive and she can be proud of the fact that netball is South Africa’s biggest women’s sport.

Wenda Nel not only redeemed herself by winning a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, she also made South African athletics history.

The Pretorian is the first South African female athlete ever to win a medal in the longer hurdles event at a major international competition (Olympic Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games).

It meant she had just reason for smiling broadly the moment her name flashed on the electronic scoreboard, confirming her third-place finish.

What made the moment that little bit more special was that during the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Nel was disqualified in the final for a trailing leg infringement.

Janieve Russell (Jamaica) on Thursday won in a time of 54.33s, with Eilidh Doyle (Scotland) second in 54.80s.

It was the third time the Scot finished second in the 400m hurdles at the Commonwealth Games.

Nel clocked a time of 54.96s.She admitted that she had her work cut

out to secure a medal place finish.“Going over the last hurdle, it felt for a

moment as if I was going to crash down. Luckily I managed to recover.

“Over the last 50 metres, it was a case of running like never before. I was not immediately sure if I had done enough to medal,” said an emotional Nel afterwards.

“The moment I realised that I had done enough to be on the podium is one I will cherish for a long time to come.”

The Tuks-athlete surprised with her aggressive approach.

She was basically racing from the front the moment she got out of the starting blocks.

“The plan was to go out hard as I wanted to push my body to see what I am capable of,” Nel concluded.

“At the end of the day, it was perhaps not my most perfect race, but I guess it does not matter; I had achieved what I set out to do.”

Snyman returning with bronze Pretoria’s Unelle Snyman won a bronze medal in the women’s under-78kg category at the African Judo Championships in Tunisia.

She is of the opinion that with a little bit of luck, she could have contested for the silver or gold medal.

Snyman’s second fight at the tournament was against Kaouthar Ouallal from Algeria. It was a no-holds-barred encounter in which both tried to outsmart the other, but to no avail.

After the official time for the fight ran out, the scores were still level. So, it boiled down to the so-called “Golden Score”, which meant an extra three minutes of fighting on the mat. Unfortunately, Snyman lost out by being penalised.

“Naturally I would have loved to win, but I gave it my all.

“On the day it was not good enough,

but I have learned a lot that will stand me in good stead in the future,” said Snyman after the tournament.

“I can take a little bit of satisfaction from the fact that Ouallal went on to win the gold medal.”

The Tuks judoka won her first fight against Egypt’s Alaa Hamed with an ippon and also was victorious against Morocco’s Fatima Chakir.

Snyman is starting to make a habit of winning medals at international tournaments. At last year’s African Tournament she won a silver medal.

Snyman’s judo CV is indeed impressive. As a youngster, she won gold and silver medals at the African Championships.

In 2014, she represented South Africa at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, where she just missed out winning a bronze medal.

Bulls move up to eighth place on SupeRugby log after a big triumph

The Bulls moved up to second place on the South African conference log and eighth place on the overall log with a 40-10 victory over the Sharks in Durban on Saturday. Warrick Gelant, pictured on the right, scored a hat-trick of tries and the Bulls surprised everyone by scoring six tries in the Shark tank, while the home team could only reach the try line once. Farhaan Behardien was the big winner at the Annual Titans Awards after a very successful 2017/18 season.

During the past season the Titans won the RAM Slam T20 Challenge, before claiming a dramatic Sunfoil Series title on the final day of the tournament.

Behardien, an achiever in all formats, helped himself to four awards on the evening, including the coveted Player of the Year trophy. He also secured the T20 Player of the Year, the First-Class Player of the Year and the Most Valuable Player of the Year, in a season that also saw him mark his 100th first-class appearance with a century.

“It has been another very productive season for our franchise team, and I congratulate coach Mark Boucher and the rest of his fantastic team for continuing to set the standards in South African domestic cricket,” Titans CEO Jacques Faul said of the Titans.

Faul said a special mention should go to Behardien, who had been a fantastic servant for Northerns and Titans cricket for years.

“He deserves all the accolades that he received this evening,” Faul said of the night’s big winner.

Wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi was also a multiple winner, as his productive campaign reaped the Momentum One-Day Cup Player of the Year, as well as the prestigious Players’ Player of the Year, as voted for by his teammates.

Promising batsman Andrea Agathagelou’s encouraging displays at the top of the order were rewarded with the Newcomer of Year award.

One of the brightest stars in the Titans stable, Aiden Markram, has enjoyed a meteoric rise to international stardom, but he remains a popular drawcard when he turns out in Titans blue.

The top-order ace walked away with the Bacher and Co Fan’s Player of the Year.

REKORD

PRETORIA NORTH REKORD APRIL 20, 2018

Koos Venter

For the second Commonwealth Games in a row, the South African 4x100m relay team set a new national record.

However, the big difference this time around is that they also won silver in the competition.

The South African team consisted of four local athletes from Pretoria, all of which belong to the TuksAthletics club.

Henricho Bruintjies started the race, Emile Erasmus ran the second leg and gave the baton to Anaso Jobodwana, while South Africa’s sprinting superstar, Akani Simbine, ran the last 100m.

It was a real team effort by the South Africans, but the way Simbine ran the last 100m does deserve a special mention. It was brute poetry in motion.

Simbine was about the third athlete to receive the baton on the last changeover.

For a moment it looked like the South Africans were going to miss out.

But once the SA recordholder in the 100m got into the full flight, there was no stopping him. He moved from fourth to third to second in a few metres.

Unfortunately, there were not enough metres left to catch England’s Harry Aikines Aryeetey.

England won the race in 38.13s, with the South African team coming second in 38.24s. This was a massive improvement on their previous record of 38.35s, set during the 2014 Glasgow Games. Jamaica was third in 38.35s.

Afterwards, an elated Simbine said it was an honour for him and his teammates to win the medal for South Africa.

Simbine, the Commonwealth Games 100m champion, admits to being surprised by his burst of speed.

“I knew I could finish strong, but I did not realise that I would be so fast. It is just the

Pta relay team runs away with silver

beginning of the season, and with my top end speed being this fast already, I cannot help to be excited about what I still possibly will be able to achieve.”

He said his main motivation the moment he received the baton was to win a medal for South Africa.

“What helped was that I was becoming aware that Yohan Blake was starting to accelerate and coming up next to me. I thought to myself, ‘there is no way that I am going to allow him to catch up with

me’,” said the Tuks sprinter, who has now managed to outsprint the Jamaican on two occasions during the games.

The silver medallist in the 100m, Henricho Bruintjies, is of the opinion that as a relay team they are capable of running even faster times.

“We managed to train together a few times during the games, which certainly helped, but if we can do so more often there is no telling what we will be capable of.

As they say, practice make perfect,” said

Bruintjies. Anaso Jobodwana, who were disqualified during the 200m heats after a technical error, said he was relieved to win a silver medal, which somewhat made up for his disappointment about what had happened in the 200m.

Emile Erasmus, who came in as a replacement, was full of praise for how his teammates raced.

“It is a great honour for me to be racing with them, especially since they are so passionate about what they are doing.”

uitgespreek. Hy het openlik gesê dat ’n donker

dag vir rugby as spel sal aanbreek as klubrugby verlore sou gaan.
