LYDENBURG - A person’s character can be judged by the compassion he or she has for animals.

One security company has, however, shown that its character goes beyond just serving justice when they rescued a severely injured dog in a Graskop plantation on Sunday afternoon.

Phoenix Flying Squad, K9 and Mounted Security’s Lt Maputhe Selepe went out of their way to ensure that a dog found bound by its hind legs in the plantation was rescued from certain death.

According to Jandré Stander of Phoenix, Selepe and his team found the dog during a routine patrol in the plantation.

The male lion spotted on the R37/Long Tom Pass.

Lion on the loose, public mustn’t interfereLYDENBURG - A fully grown male

lion was spotted on the Long Tom Pass on Tuesday night.

A picture of the lion spread like wildfi re on WhatsApp and Facebook groups causing quite a stir among residents. The picture was taken 10 kilometres before the Mbombela turn-off from Lydenburg on the R37.

From the picture, it is clear that the lion is male, fully grown with a full mane. Members of the Mpumalanga Tourism and

Parks Agency (MTPA) were called to the scene in order to hopefully dart and capture the animal and establish where it could have come from.

Almost immediately after the news broke, a fake picture of a shot lion circulated, causing outrage. The newspaper, however, did a Google image search and established that this was indeed a fake picture being circulated which originated in India.

Khulu Nkambule, communications manager of MTPA confi rmed that the circulated picture was false and also

Rapid responders once again clear road after protest

LYDENBURG - Phoenix Flying Squad, K9 and Mounted Security worked non-stop on Monday night after yet another blockade of the R37.

This road has continuously been blocked by disgruntled community members. It is the main road leading to Marula Platinum Mine.

For the past weeks, this road has been made inaccessible especially at night.

The residents in the area are demanding services from the mine. They allege the mine has been neglecting their village when hiring and providing services.

While Mpumalanga’s mining industry is no stranger to these social

unrests and outbursts, the latest blockage of these roads is putting more pressure on mining companies already affected by commodity prices.

Last year Implats was considering closing its Marula Mine down after it lost 10 000 ounces out of almost 80 000 ounces of planned output due to continued community protests that included roadblocks, assaults on people reporting for work and vehicles being targeted by stone throwing.

Phoenix and the local SAPS worked from 21:00 on Monday to reopen the road after it had been blocked by stones, rocks and broken bottles.

The road was opened and safe for transport on Tuesday morning.

SAPS are excelling in their quest to eradicate drugs in their policing area.

According to police spokesman, Sgt Kholofelo Phokane they arrested a 48-year-old man for cultivating dagga in his yard on Wednesday morning.

confi rmed that the lion had not been darted or captured. “Our members were called to the scene where the lion was spotted. The terrain was, however, a huge challenge as was the lack of light.

“I can confi rm that the lion has not been darted or captured. People are urged not to interfere or intervene and wait for the correct information before making such allegations. This makes authorities’ jobs more diffi cult.”

What makes this story interesting is the fact that this is apparently not the fi rst time that the lion was spotted. Carla Venter told the newspaper that she and her daughter Cara (8) were travelling to Hazyview for a netball tournament last Saturday.

“All of a sudden, she told me; ‘Mom, there is a lion on the pass, but it has got no mane’.”

This incident happened just after 07:00. Venter said she fi rst thought that her daughter was lying, but after seeing the article realised that she could have been correct.

Nkambule told the newspaper that members of MTPA will again head to the same spot on Wednesday morning to hopefully be more successful in capturing the animal. It is at this stage not clear where the lion came from or how long it has been roaming the pass.

In the meantime residents are urged to contact the MTPA as soon as possible should they spot the lion anywhere along the road. On Wednesday afternoon it said the search had in the interim been stopped.

Katlego Phala at Tšate Heritage Site, which is in a bad state.

Gilbert MotseoHeritage site in total disrepair

BURGERSFORT - Tšate Heritage Site is in a state of disrepair. The site, situated in Ntswaneng Village, was proclaimed a provincial heritage site in 2007. It is currently reduced to just two mobile containers posing as offi ces, with no access to water and electricity.

Speaking to Steelburger/Lydenburg News, the DA’s Katlego Phala said they are saddened that the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in Limpopo has abandoned the site.

“During an oversight inspection, we were shocked to fi nd the place in a total state of disrepair, which is indicative of a department that failed to take ownership of the site and fulfi l its mandate.”

According to residents, the Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) initiated the fi rst development phase in 2008 but nothing has happened to date.

The newspaper discovered that the security guards relieve themselves in a nearby bush, as the toilets have been turned into storerooms. The site is not fenced, allowing for stray animals to walk through it on a daily basis, causing more damage.

“Despite a generous budget allocation of R66 million for maintenance in the 2017/18 budget, it is clear that the department did not spend a cent on this historical site to preserve our history and culture. We have noted that the maintenance budget was reduced to R47 million for this fi nancial year, which poses a further risk for non-maintenance to all our heritage sites across the province,” Phala added.

She said they will table questions to

the MEC for sports, arts and culture, Onnica Moloi, to ascertain why the site is not being maintained and what is being done with the funds allocated for this.

“Heritage sites such as Tšate play a crucial role, not only in educating our people about the history of our traditional kings and leaders, but also as a tourist attraction which in turn will boost the province’s economy.”

Tšate Heritage Site portrays the natural and cultural history of the region, the rise and fall of the Pedi Empire, living culture and the fascinating natural

and geological environment in the surrounds of the site. King Sekwati and his son King Sekhukhune had the vision and leadership skills to unite a large number of vulnerable communities into the formidable Pedi Empire of the eighteenth century. The valley provided safety and was backed by the Leolo Mountains to the south, the hills of Mosega and Modimolle guarding the entrance to the north, with Ntswaneng as bastion in the centre.

Praktiseer pipes are running dryBURGERSFORT - The taps have been

dry in Praktiseer Extension 2 for the past three months.

This has led to residents buying water from those who own boreholes. A 25-litre container reportedly costs R2.

According to a resident, Ephraim Nkwana, the poor are left with no choice but to collect water from the nearby Tubatse River.

“This issue started when a truck installing VIP toilets destroyed the water pipes in the village. We reported the matter to our councillors and Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM), but we

were told to fix the pipes ourselves.” Nkwana said they struggle to get

services in the village. “It’s so sad that our government is failing us. Water is a necessity. It is difficult to survive without a single drop.”

According to Nkwana, a huge water tank was erected in the village in 2016. It was earmarked to curb water woes. “The tank remains a white elephant, as it has never been used.”

The municipality’s spokesman, Willy Mosoma, said they were aware of the challenges experienced by the people of Praktiseer.

Tim Seroka

“Government must intervene in the increasing of fuel prices. Taxi drivers are struggling. We need a nationwide protest.”

“The recent petrol increase makes us dig deep into our pockets. We are struggling with the ever-increasing petrol costs.”

Tubatse Crossing Mall celebrates fifth birthdayBURGERSFORT - It is hard to believe

that it has been five years since Tubatse Crossing Mall first opened its doors.

The regional mall, along with Burgersfort Spur and Panarottis, celebrated its fifth birthday on May 26. Since its inception, the mall has been a completely new and exciting shopping destination for locals.

It was entertainment galore at the entrances to the mall on Saturday. Children from Tubatse Crossing Orphanage enjoyed the festivities. Their faces were painted bright colours by the mall’s promoters.

The mall’s marketing manager Veracius Thengwayo said they were excited with their achievement.

“We were thrilled with the turnout to

our five-year anniversary celebrations. The atmosphere was phenomenal with shoppers of all ages enjoying the festivities and artists performing.”

The event drew hundreds of shoppers to the mall. “A big thank you to everyone who made the day special,” Thengwayo added.

The management of the mall, led by Thengwayo, also shared a cake with shoppers. An excited Prince Leshoka wished the mall many more years of success.

“The day was exceptional to us as shoppers. We enjoyed the specials that were offered by the shops, the entertainment from the artists, as well as the cake offered to us.”

Shoppers especially enjoyed the music dished up by Skeem Saam, a traditional music group based in Tubatse.

CT Car Wash’s Elmon Matlala cleans one of the cars. A client’s car after being washed.

This car wash team takes pride in its workBURGERSFORT - Motorists prefer their

cars clean and tidy. In the past years there have been

several car-washing businesses opened on every street corner, even in the villages. Most have succeeded while others have succumbed to trying times. Steelburger/Lydenburg News got to spend the day with employees at CT Car Wash. Their business is situated opposite CTM stores just next to Morone Complex.

Employee Clifford Tumelo said they arrive as early as 08:00 in the morning.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s hot or cold, people always want to have their cars clean. When I arrive I warm up our generator, buy fuel for our machines, clean the pressure pump and gear up for the day.”

Tumelo revealed that on certain days they are called by clients who want them to wash their cars before they even open for business.

“I don’t want to disappoint my clients. I have loyal clients working for the municipality, SAPS and taxi operators who only want to wash at our business. I am returning the favour by providing them with excellent service. Every time they call, I rush to give them an even better service.”

It’s mid-month and Burgersfort is quiet, only street vendors are selling their products and a few cars drive by. “We sometimes find it hard during this time. We rely on the Intercity taxi drivers (the Avanza guys). We often give them a discount as we know that these are tough times.”

As Tumelo narrates CT Car Wash’s successes and challenges, a customer calls him to fetch his car. “We often pick up cars from clients and return them after washing them. We even have a stamp as proof that we cleaned the car. Companies are welcome to bring their cars to us. We have the Volkswagen and BMW crews washing their cars at our business.”

Tumelo and his team further took the time to share the steps and procedures in cleaning cars with the publication.

In the afternoon an influx of cars are seen at the car wash. A group of teachers and miners come once a week to wash

their vehicles. “We love our job because we get to mingle with people and create friendships, while also supporting our families.”

After a long day of work, Tumelo highlights that it wasn’t a fruitful day. “We did not make much money but we are hoping for better business during month end.”

It’s around 17:30 and the team, consisting of three ladies and two men, cleans their equipment and takes them to a safer place. They are all preparing to go home. They are quick to add that they buy car cleaning products from the trusted

brands in the country. Throughout the day, Steelburger/

Lydenburg News observed that customers at CT Car Wash are happy that they can trust their cars and keys with them for the whole day.

Their service is not as complex and expensive as others. They get water from the neighbourhood, using up to 60 litre for a car. They charge only R60 for smaller cars and R80 for larger cars and deliver a car any owner would be proud of in merely 30 to 40 minutes. For arrangements or enquiries, contact them on 082-679-8346.

Tshitangano Ndifelani.

Tumelo MkhabelaLYDENBURG - This week Steelburger/

Lydenburg News introduces Mash FM’s Tshitangano Ndifelani, also known as “Ghanndie” from Tshaulu, Venda in Limpopo.

Give us a brief biography I am Tshitangano Ndifelani, born in the

late ‘80s in Tshaulu, Limpopo. I embarked on a media studies degree, majoring in radio broadcasting and programming, and studied public relations management at Unisa and Nated Electrical Engineering.

I’m focused and ambitious, driven by an intense interest and passion for the media at large. My interest in radio stems from the medium’s ability to relate to different people in a very personal and interactive manner.

Give us your show profileMy broadcasting journey began late in

2016. I co-hosted The Twilight Show every Saturday with Liberty Zamba as my mentor.

The Twilight Show is an energetic and up tempo three-hour evening show which speaks to every demographic that is upwardly mobile, savvy, vibrant and driven by pop culture. It is aimed to entertain and inform the public about what’s happening around the world. Locally the trends we play are hip-hop, electronic music, R&B and African soul music from 18:00 to 21:00 every Saturday.

When did your love of radio develop? When I was young. I loved music and

I’m a chatterbox, so I grew up imitating other presenters. In 2008 I started as a DJ in Pretoria and that was when I revived my love and passion for radio and studied towards it.

What are the challenges you experience as a presenter?

Challenges we encounter are everyday ones that we can’t run away from. At times I felt it was a language barrier, which is not an issue any more because we have different

shows that cater for different people.I don’t blame listeners for less

participation and not knowing much about the running order of a radio station, as it is the station’s duty to reach out and to engage and teach listeners about our programmes, and to get their opinion and ideas of what they expect to hear from certain shows.

What is your message to young and aspiring radio presenters?

To all the aspiring radio presenters, all I can say is keep knocking at the doors. Radio does not come to your house knocking. Being equipped with the right qualification is a step closer.

Don’t do it for the money or fame, education is the key to success.

What is your favourite quote?“Be who you are and say what you feel,

because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind, imitation is suicide”.

Arts and culture proudly celebrated in TubatseBURGERSFORT - Traditional and

cultural music was the order of day during the Sekhukhune region’s arts and culture celebrations.

The event was recently organised at the Sekhukhune FET College’s CN Phatudi Campus in Praktiseer.

Artists from across the municipality got an opportunity to showcase their talents. It started in the morning and lasted throughout the day to give more artists a chance to shine.

Performances included individuals and groups in music, traditional dances, poetry and DJs, among many others. Representatives from the Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture attended and the event was rated a success.

Master of ceremony Ngwanatheko

Maserumule encouraged the youth to partake in more extramural activities and to embrace their culture.

Organiser of the event, Matilda Mathonsi told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that it was a challenge putting it together.

“We had challenges as we lacked support from the government, but I am relieved that we staged one of the best events. Our performers were given R1 000 and certificates for attending. I am hopeful our next event will be much bigger.”

Mathonsi said events similar to this one were also held across the the province to create a platform for the artists to showcase their talent and market themselves.

The artists were also taught about copyright and protecting their work.

The event was facilitated by the Limpopo Federation of the Community Arts Centres.

Not only did the reveal of the two new editions cause a stir among the attendees, but they were also treated on a glass of wine and divine delicatessens.

The brand-new Isuzu mu-X is a seven-seater adventure SUV which is a rival to the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.

According to Cars.co.za, when General Motors SA announced it was shutting up shop, everyone was worried that the brands in its portfolio would disappear from the market.

Fortunately, Isuzu, which was not affiliated with GM outside of South Africa, has stuck around and is launching products

Albei was wenners in hul onderskeie ouderdomsgroepe.

These stars aim to prove their smartsLYDENBURG - Pupils of Lydenburg

Primary School qualified for the second round of the 2018 AstroQuiz provincial eliminations.

The elimination rounds were held at Penryn College in Mbombela in April. AstroQuiz is a competition aimed at grade seven pupils, and tests their knowledge of astronomy.

The project, by the South African Agency

for Science and Technology Advancement, aims to improve the teaching and learning of basic astronomy in primary schools.

The quiz is run as a knockout event. Only one team of four children from each school could enter. In each leg of the quiz, teams had to answer a set of 30 questions. All schools had to answer the same questions. Half of the competing schools were knocked out in each leg. Eventually, one school will be selected at each centre as their finalist for the national finals event.

Lydenburg Primary managed to qualify for the second provincial elimination round that will take place later in May at Penryn College.

The team’s coach, Johnny Ramodike, said this is a great moment for the school and they believe that this achievement will encourage the pupils to work hard to qualify for the national finals.

“We are proud of our team and grateful to the parents for their support in this endeavour that seeks extra hard work.”

Thabane Primary looks to prove they are water wiser

BURGERSFORT - Thabane Primary School in Mabotsha recently qualified to represent Limpopo in the Baswa le Meetse (Youth in Water) national competition, to be held in Pretoria next month.

It is organised by the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs in partnership with the Department of Basic Education. Pupils from all nine provinces get an opportunity to participate.

The competition targets grade six and seven pupils and is based on projects that convey health and hygiene

messages through art mediums such as drama, traditional music, poetry, praise singing and posters.

It also promotes hygiene, stimulates the interest of youth in water-related careers and promotes cultural diversity.

One of the school’s pupils, Mandela Kgwedi, took first place in the art-poster category. He designed it himself. It depicts ways to save and preserve water. The school also obtained second position in the drama category.

The school management said it was pleased with the achievements.

“We are honoured to have mentored the pupils, and it shows that hard work pays off. We hope to do well in Pretoria.”
