Condolences and words of support continue to pour in from all over the world

days after HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa bid fare-well to his beloved Kingdom and people.

Funeral of the late His Roy-al Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa was held at the Al-Haniniya cemetery on Friday, in Riffa, in the presence of HRH Prince Salman bin Ham-

ad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and Prime Minister.

Before that His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa per-formed the funeral prayer for late His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa at the Shaikh Isa bin Salman Mosque in Riffa.

Bahrain is now in official week-long mourning, with His Majesty King and HRH the Crown prince continue to re-ceive condolences from world leaders.

Proud legacy

His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa during a condolence meeting yesterday at Sakhir Air Base said, “HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa’s outstanding leadership has gifted Bahrain a proud legacy locally, regionally and internationally”.

Recalling the noble virtues of the late HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and his dedication in serving his King and the Kingdom, HRH Prince

Salman said the Kingdom has “lost a great and wise leader who

devoted his life to further the Kingdom’s progress and the as-pirations of its citizens.”

The Prime Minister was offer-ing his deepest condolences to the Deputy Prime Minister, HH Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khal-ifa, the Advisor to the Prime Minister, HH Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, and the grandchildren of the late HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa at the Sakhir Air Base.

It seems like the US President has finally come to terms with the reality of his defeat.

In a statement yesterday, Don-ald Trump, who had chanted

the “I won” mantra for weeks recognised for the first time the possibility of an upcoming Biden administration.

But he stopped short of con-ceding the race and did not mention his Democratic rival

by name in broadcast remarks in the White House Rose Garden.

The moment was the closest he has come to acknowledging that President-elect Joe Biden could succeed him.

Egypt finds treasure trove of over 100 sarcophagi

Egypt announced Sat-urday the discovery of

an ancient treasure trove of more than a 100 intact sar-cophagi, dating back more than 2,500 years ago, the largest such find this year.

The sealed wooden cof-fins, unveiled on site amid much fanfare, belonged to top officials of the Late Peri-od and the Ptolemaic period of ancient Egypt.

They were found in three burial shafts at depths of 12 metres (40 feet) in the sweeping Saqqara necrop-olis south of Cairo.

Bahrain has lost one of its loyal sons with the pass-ing of His Royal Highness

Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, said His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

HM, the King was meeting Parliament Speaker and Shura Council Chairman, ministers and other top officials who of-fered their condolences on the

demise of HRH Prince Khalifa. “Bahrain has lost one of its

loyal sons who dedicated their lives to serving their country and

contributed, through steadfast work, to its progress and de-velopment,” HM the King said praying to Allah the Almighty to

rest the soul of the deceased in eternal peace.

Speaker Fawzia bint Abdullah Zainal, Shura Council Chair-

man Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh, and the Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council and President of the Cassation

Court Abdullah bin Hassan Al Buainain were present.

HM, the King’s Personal Rep-resentative His Highness Shaikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, HM the King’s Representative for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs and National Se-curity Advisor HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and Min-ister of the Royal Court Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa were also present at the meeting at the Safriya Palace.

The mourners praised HRH Prince Khalifa’s role in serving Bahrain and promoting its com-prehensive progress that result-ed in many achievements across all fields.

Bahraini candidates are to become the first choice for jobs in private schools

here. A proposal giving citizens

preference in such jobs received the nod of the Parliament.

The proposal is now with the government to prepare a draft law, the News of Bahrain report said quoting Al Watan.

The Secretary-General of the Higher Education Council Ab-dulghani Al Sheweikh reported-ly backed the proposal.

Al Sheweikh, however, said, the Education Ministry has lit-tle control on employment in

private schools and that its role is limited to oversight.

The proposal, according to MP Isa Al Dasuri, lands more jobs for Bahraini graduates and will be instrumental in boosting Bahrainisation.

“There are over 3,000 foreign teachers in public schools while Bahrainis are employed in pri-vate schools for two years until they get state support and then they [schools] lay them off,” the report quoted MP Masuma Ab-dulrahim as saying.

The proposal reportedly ta-bled by five lawmakers cited an increase in the number of Bah-raini graduates and incapability

of the Education Ministry to of-fer them jobs in public institu-tions, a Gulf News report said.

The report also highlights a draft bill approved earlier by the Bahraini parliamentary commit-tee asking employees to give job preferences to citizens.

The draft bill requires employ-ers to check records of Bahraini job-seekers and hire qualified citizens.

Failure to comply with the regulations will be punishable by a fine ranging from BD5,000 to 20,000, the report added.

Meanwhile, after a hiatus of four-months, Bahrain started allowing private companies

here to resume hiring foreign workers in August, according to the Labour Market Regulatory Authority.

LMRA’s new rule also states that employers must give pri-ority for local job seekers and publish vacancies in local news-papers for two weeks.

At that time, the Minister of Labour and Social Development, Jameel Humaidan, has said: “The priority is for employing Bahraini people and not for is-suing work permits.”

The decision was in line with the directives of a coordina-tion committee headed by HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al

Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Dep-uty Supreme Commander and Prime Minister.

The minister also said that an

employer is allowed to apply for a work permit after announc-ing vacancies for Bahrainis to occupy.

Bahraini candidates are to become the first choice for jobs in private schools

here. A proposal giving citizens

preference in such jobs received the nod of the Parliament.

The proposal is now with the government to prepare a draft law, the News of Bahrain report said quoting Al Watan.

The Secretary-General of the Higher Education Council Ab-dulghani Al Sheweikh reported-ly backed the proposal.

Al Sheweikh, however, said, the Education Ministry has lit-tle control on employment in

private schools and that its role is limited to oversight.

The proposal, according to MP Isa Al Dasuri, lands more jobs for Bahraini graduates and will be instrumental in boosting Bahrainisation.

“There are over 3,000 foreign teachers in public schools while Bahrainis are employed in pri-vate schools for two years until they get state support and then they [schools] lay them off,” the report quoted MP Masuma Ab-dulrahim as saying.

The proposal reportedly ta-bled by five lawmakers cited an increase in the number of Bah-raini graduates and incapability

of the Education Ministry to of-fer them jobs in public institu-tions, a Gulf News report said.

The report also highlights a draft bill approved earlier by the Bahraini parliamentary commit-tee asking employees to give job preferences to citizens.

The draft bill requires employ-ers to check records of Bahraini job-seekers and hire qualified citizens.

Failure to comply with the regulations will be punishable by a fine ranging from BD5,000 to 20,000, the report added.

Meanwhile, after a hiatus of four-months, Bahrain started allowing private companies

here to resume hiring foreign workers in August, according to the Labour Market Regulatory Authority.

LMRA’s new rule also states that employers must give pri-ority for local job seekers and publish vacancies in local news-papers for two weeks.

At that time, the Minister of Labour and Social Development, Jameel Humaidan, has said: “The priority is for employing Bahraini people and not for is-suing work permits.”

The decision was in line with the directives of a coordina-tion committee headed by HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al

Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Dep-uty Supreme Commander and Prime Minister.

The minister also said that an

employer is allowed to apply for a work permit after announc-ing vacancies for Bahrainis to occupy.

British Prime Minister Bo-ris Johnson plans to an-nounce next week a ban

on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030, five years earlier than previously planned, the Financial Times reported yesterday.

Britain had originally planned to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel-powered cars from 2040, as part of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and in February Johnson brought this forward to 2035.

Citing unidentified industry and government figures, the FT said Johnson now intended to move the date forward again to

2030 in a speech on environ-mental policy he is expected to give next week.

The BBC reported a similar plan earlier on Saturday, without giving any sources.

A Downing Street spokes-woman declined to comment on the reports or the content of Johnson’s upcoming speech.

The FT said the new timeta-ble was not expected to apply to some hybrid cars which use a mixture of electric and fossil fuel propulsion and could still be sold until 2035.

An end to the sale of new pet-rol and diesel cars would mark a huge shift in Britain’s automo-tive market.

Industry figures show that

petrol and diesel powered cars accounted for 73.6% of new car sales so far this year, while just 5.5% of sales were for pure elec-tric vehicles, which are typically more expensive. Hybrid vehicles of various types made up the remaining sales.

The western Chinese city of Lanzhou said yesterday it had detected the

new coronavirus on the packaging of a batch of shrimp imported from Saudi Arabia, as China ramps up testing of frozen foods.

The Lanzhou Municipal Health Com-mission said in a statement on its website that it had found one positive sample on Friday on the inner packaging of im-ported frozen shrimp from Saudi Arabia

that had passed through customs in the coastal city of Tianjin.

was sealed and the whereabouts of all food sold had been determined, the state-ment said.

The commission said the shrimp had been purchased by Zhanjiang Guolian Aquatic Products Co Ltd, entered the country on Oct. 21 and reached Lanzhou on Nov. 8.

The positive sample in Lanzhou fol-lows the detection of the virus on the packaging of a batch of Brazilian beef in Wuhan on Friday, and on Argentinian beef samples in Shandong and Jiangsu provinces this week.

two airports in a nearby region and threatened to strike neigh-bouring Eritrea, raising fears that the escalating conflict could spread.

The attacks -- and threats of more to come -- fuelled concern that a conflict Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed vowed would be quick and contained could instead snowball and dest-abilise the broader Horn of Africa region.

Abiy, the winner of last year’s Nobel Peace Prize, announced last week he had ordered military operations in Tigray, saying the move came in response to attacks on federal military camps by the regional ruling party, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

Hundreds of people are report-

ed to have been killed in the con-flict so far, some in a gruesome massacre documented by Amnes-ty International.

Thousands have fled fight-ing and air strikes in Tigray, whose leaders Abiy accus-es of seeking to destabilise the country.

As of Friday evening, at least 21,000 Ethiopians had fled across the border into Sudan, according to Sudan’s refugee agency.

The strikes on airports took

place Friday night in two cities of the neighbouring Amhara region, Bahir Dar and Gondar.

The federal government ac-knowledged that “the airport areas have sustained damages”, while a doctor in Gondar said two soldiers were killed and up to 15 injured.

“Yesterday evening we’ve in-flicted heavy damages on the military components of the Gon-dar and Bahir Dar airports,” Ge-tachew Reda, a senior member

of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), said in a statement yesterday. He reiterated claims by the TPLF that Eritrean soldiers are involved in the fighting, which Ethiopia denies.

And he said the TPLF would not hesitate to strike locations inside Eritrea -- Ethiopia’s tradi-tional foe -- including its capital, Asmara.

“Whether they lift from Asmara or Bahir Dar to attack Tigray... will commit retaliatory measures. We will undertake missile attacks on selected targets in addition to the airports,” he said.

“We will conduct missile at-tacks to foil military movements in Massawa and Asmara”, he add-ed.

Esther Nakajjigo, 25, was visit-

Egypt finds treasure trove of over 100 sarcophagiAFP | Cairo

Egypt announced yesterday the dis-covery of an ancient treasure trove

of more than a 100 intact sarcophagi, the largest such find this year.

The sealed wooden coffins, unveiled on site amid fanfare, belonged to top offi-cials of the Late Period and the Ptolemaic period of ancient Egypt.

They were found in three burial shafts at depths of 12 meters (40 feet) in the sweeping Saqqara necropolis south of Cairo. Archaeologists opened one coffin to reveal a mummy wrapped in a burial shroud adorned with brightly colored hieroglyphic pictorials.

Saqqara is the burial site of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The huge find came just over a month after archaeologists in the area found 59 other well-preserved and sealed wood-en coffins dating back more than 2,500

years ago.“Saqqara has yet to reveal all of its

contents. It is a treasure,” Antiquities and Tourism Minister Khaled Al-Anany said at the unveiling ceremony.

“Excavations are still underway. Whenever we empty a burial shaft of sar-cophagi, we find an entrance to another.”

More than 40 statues of ancient deities and funerary masks were also discov-

ered, he said.They will be distributed among several

museums in Egypt including the yet-to-opened Grand Egyptian Museum at the Giza plateau. The minister attributed the flurry of discoveries in Saqqara to exten-sive excavation works in recent years.

Another discovery in the vast necrop-olis is expected to be announced in the coming weeks, he added.

Al Qaeda’s second-in-command, ac-cused of helping to mastermind the 1998 bombings of two US embassies

in Africa, was killed in Iran in August by Israeli operatives acting at the behest of the United States, the New York Times report-ed, citing intelligence officials.

Abdullah Ahmed Abdullah, who went by the nom de guerre Abu Muhammad al-Masri, was gunned down by two men on a motorcycle in the streets of Tehran on Aug. 7, the Times reported.

The killing of Masri, who was seen as a likely successor to al Qaeda’s current leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was kept secret until now, the newspaper said.

A senior Afghan security source told Reuters in October that Masri, who has long been on the US Federal Bureau of Investi-gation’s Most Wanted Terrorists list, had been killed in the Pasdaran area of Tehran. Reuters had been unable to corroborate that information.

It was unclear what, if any, role the Unit-ed States had in the killing of the Egyp-tian-born militant, the Times said. US au-thorities had been tracking Masri and other al Qaeda operatives in Iran for years, it said.

Al Qaeda has not announced his death, Iranian officials have covered it up and no government has publicly claimed respon-sibility, the Times said.

Iran yesterday denied the report, saying there were no al Qaeda “terrorists” on its soil.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khat-ibzadeh said in a statement that the United States and Israel sometimes “try to tie Iran to such groups by lying and leaking false information to the media in order to avoid responsibility for the criminal activities of this group and other terrorist groups in the region”.

The administration of President Donald Trump’s “scare-mongering tactic against Iran has become routine,” Khatibzadeh

said.A US official, speaking to Reuters on

condition of anonymity, declined to con-firm any details of the Times story or say whether there was any US involvement. The White House National Security Council did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

US counterterrorism officials believe Iran, also a US enemy, may have let him live there to conduct operations against US targets, the Times said.

There was an unusual killing in Tehran on Aug. 7, the day Masri was reportedly killed, that was reported by Iranian state media at the time. State media said on Aug. 8 that a Lebanese man and his daughter had been killed in the northern Tehran neighbourhood of Pasdaran by unknown assailants on motorcycle.

They identified the man as Habib Dawoud, a 58-year-old history teacher, and his daughter Mariam, 27.

Vietnam was bracing for Typhoon Vamco to

make landfall in the coun-try’s central coast early on Sunday, as the death toll in the Philippines rose to 53 from that country’s deadli-est storm this year.

Packing winds of up to 165 kph (103 mph), Vamco is forecast to hit a swathe of Vietnam’s coast from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai prov-ince, the government ’s weather agency said yes-terday.

“This is a very strong typhoon,” Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said, warning provinces in Vam-co’s projected path to pre-pare for its impact.

The provinces planned to evacuate 468,000 people by today, state media cited the government’s disaster management authority as saying.

Vietnam is prone to de-structive storms and flood-ing due to its long coast-line. Vamco will be the 13th storm that affects the Southeast Asian country this year, where more than 160 people have been killed in natural disasters trig-gered by a series of storms since early October.

“There has been no res-pite for more than eight million people living in central Vietnam,” said Nguyen Thi Xuan Thu, Vi-etnam Red Cross Society President. “Each time they start rebuilding their lives and livelihoods, they are pummelled by yet another storm.”

Egypt finds treasure trove of over 100 sarcophagiAFP | Cairo

Egypt announced yesterday the dis-covery of an ancient treasure trove

of more than a 100 intact sarcophagi, the largest such find this year.

The sealed wooden coffins, unveiled on site amid fanfare, belonged to top offi-cials of the Late Period and the Ptolemaic period of ancient Egypt.

They were found in three burial shafts at depths of 12 meters (40 feet) in the sweeping Saqqara necropolis south of Cairo. Archaeologists opened one coffin to reveal a mummy wrapped in a burial shroud adorned with brightly colored hieroglyphic pictorials.

Saqqara is the burial site of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The huge find came just over a month after archaeologists in the area found 59 other well-preserved and sealed wood-en coffins dating back more than 2,500

years ago.“Saqqara has yet to reveal all of its

contents. It is a treasure,” Antiquities and Tourism Minister Khaled Al-Anany said at the unveiling ceremony.

“Excavations are still underway. Whenever we empty a burial shaft of sar-cophagi, we find an entrance to another.”

More than 40 statues of ancient deities and funerary masks were also discov-

ered, he said.They will be distributed among several

museums in Egypt including the yet-to-opened Grand Egyptian Museum at the Giza plateau. The minister attributed the flurry of discoveries in Saqqara to exten-sive excavation works in recent years.

Another discovery in the vast necrop-olis is expected to be announced in the coming weeks, he added.

Al Qaeda’s second-in-command, ac-cused of helping to mastermind the 1998 bombings of two US embassies

in Africa, was killed in Iran in August by Israeli operatives acting at the behest of the United States, the New York Times report-ed, citing intelligence officials.

Abdullah Ahmed Abdullah, who went by the nom de guerre Abu Muhammad al-Masri, was gunned down by two men on a motorcycle in the streets of Tehran on Aug. 7, the Times reported.

The killing of Masri, who was seen as a likely successor to al Qaeda’s current leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was kept secret until now, the newspaper said.

A senior Afghan security source told Reuters in October that Masri, who has long been on the US Federal Bureau of Investi-gation’s Most Wanted Terrorists list, had been killed in the Pasdaran area of Tehran. Reuters had been unable to corroborate that information.

It was unclear what, if any, role the Unit-ed States had in the killing of the Egyp-tian-born militant, the Times said. US au-thorities had been tracking Masri and other al Qaeda operatives in Iran for years, it said.

Al Qaeda has not announced his death, Iranian officials have covered it up and no government has publicly claimed respon-sibility, the Times said.

Iran yesterday denied the report, saying there were no al Qaeda “terrorists” on its soil.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khat-ibzadeh said in a statement that the United States and Israel sometimes “try to tie Iran to such groups by lying and leaking false information to the media in order to avoid responsibility for the criminal activities of this group and other terrorist groups in the region”.

“I was 19 when my mom was diagnosed and the idea of trying to understand that, especially as a little kid ... and knowing that at Gilda’s Club, kids can have fun and go to summer camp and enjoy time with other kids who under-stand what they’re going through is absolutely incred-ible,” the Oscar winner said.

The benefit gala, usually in-person, transitioned to a virtual format for the first

time this year in an effort to continue raising funds for Gilda’s Club. One of the biggest amateur talents in the world today,

Murtaza Talha will make his much-anticipated profession-al mixed martial arts debut at BRAVE CF 45, which has been rescheduled for November 19th. The Bahraini Light Heavyweight has conquered two world titles under the IMMAF banner, and has said goodbye to the amateur ranks as the number one ranked fighter in his weight class as well as the number six pound-for-pound amateur athlete.

According to BRAVE CF Pres-ident Mohammed Shahid, who has followed Talha’s road all the way from his beginnings in MMA, he’s the best talent he’s ever seen.

And Shahid, through BRAVE CF, has been responsible for the rise of top athletes in the

world of MMA, such as Khamzat Chimaev, Ilia Topuria, John-ny Walker, Guram Kutateladze, among several others. All of these men have been given their first taste of international action through BRAVE CF. From Sha-

hid’s perspective, Talha will go on to have an even more pow-erful career than the fighters mentioned above.

“He is going to conquer the world of MMA, this is my hunch after seeing the extent of his

dominance in the amateur scene. He could be the Messi of MMA”

High praise indeed for the youngster who is yet to make his debut but his stint in the amateur ranks does give cause for optimism. “He is the next generation of fighters coming through from the IMMAF ranks and they keep going to the pro-fessional scenes better and more prepared’’, says Kerrith Brown, IMMAF president and a fan of Murtaza’s.

However, the Bahraini’s as-cent to the top hasn’t been with-out challenges. He suffered a se-rious hand injury and was forced to stay away from competition for a year.

“After a span of time when he was virtually unchallenged, he participated in the world sambo championship. But he fell and sustained a serious hand injury. He had to take a year off to re-cover”, says Shahid. “Just when everyone started to forget about him, he comes back and destroys everyone all over again and be-come world champion yet again”

“He is going to be a global star” Shahid exclaimed.

BRAVE CF Commentator Phil Campbell believes Murtaza has the perfect blend of skills to suc-ceed. “He is quite simply a pow-erhouse wrestler with KO power. It’s the blueprint for success in MMA. He can dictate where the fight goes, whether he wants to keep it on the feet, keep it stand-ing with his defensive wrestling or if he wants to take the fight down to the ground and dom-inate with exquisite positional and top control, he can do that.

“I think his pro career has the potential to mirror his amateur career. You are talking about a young man who was a two-time amateur world champion, he has been at the very highest level of the sport. I believe he can repli-cate that as a professional.”

BRAVE CF fighter Mohammed Mokaev also had a remarkable amateur career and recently turned pro just as Talha. ‘’The Punisher’’ feels Murtaza is the real deal. “I feel sorry for his opponent because he is a beast. He already beats a lot of profes-sionals while training so let’s see how he will perform as a pro”

Kerrith Brown also said Mur-taza has been one of the high-lights of IMMAF in recent years. “Murtaza has been one of the stars of IMMAF for sure. His skill and technical delivery has been increasing year by year.”

When asked about how he says his debut will go he said, “I expect some fireworks”.

The top MMA prospect will make his highly anticipated de-but against Vadzim Litvin from Belarus. Litvin, who has a pro-fessional record of 4 wins and only one loss, will be a formida-ble challenge to Murtaza. The Belarusian is on a 4 fight win streak after defeating Viktor Larchenko, Aleksandr Galkin, Sergey Chmel, and Feng Shun. Three of his four wins came via finish, so Talha will have his hands full right off the bat re-garding his opponent.

terday a long-term partnership agreement with Rashid Eques-trian and Horseracing Club (REHC).

The deal includes the estab-lishment of a permanent yard at the REHC premises in Riffa in the coming months.

The announcement comes just a few days ahead of this year’s £500,000 Bahrain Inter-national Trophy, which is to be

held on Friday as the second running of the prestigious glob-al event at REHC.

George Baker Racing founder George Baker commented: “We are hugely excited at the official announcement of a long-term partnership between Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club and George Baker Racing, which signals our long-term commitment to horseracing in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and we look forward to the estab-lishment of a permanent yard in the coming months.

The FIA WEC 8 Hours of Bahrain last night was not

only the grand finale of the 2019/2020 World Endurance Championship (WEC) season, but it also marked the end of a major era in the history of en-durance racing.

The race saw the last appear-ance on track of the LMP1 hybrid cars, which, since 2012, have been prototypes noted for their extreme sophistication and ex-ceptional performance.

The LMP1 class makes way in 2021 for the new Hypercar category as the top tier of the WEC, and yesterday’s race in Bahrain was a true swan song for the highly competitive division.

Following are a few highlights of the LMP1 class over the years, according to fiawec.com:

- There have been nine differ-ent LMP1 engine manufacturers: Audi, AER, Gibson, Judd, Nismo, Mecachrome, Honda, Toyota

and Porsche- There have also been 12 dif-

ferent manufacturers of LMP1 cars since 2012: Audi, BR En-gineering, CLM/Enso, Dome, Ginetta, Honda, Lola, Nissan, OAK/Pescarolo, Oreca (brand-ed as Rebellion), Porsche and Toyota.

- Toyota were the LMP1 team with the most WEC races, with a total of 63.

- LMP1 cars have raced com-petitively in the WEC for a total of 708,314km since 2012, which is a staggering 17.5 times around the entire globe. The race distances

include 476,539km in Europe, 142,978km in Asia, 69,933km in North America and 18,864km in South America, with a total of 92,856 laps completed.

- There have been a total of 22 different nationalities of driv-ers who have competed in LMP1 since 2012: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Can-ada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, India, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzer-land, UK, US.

- A total of 113 drivers have completed at least one lap in a session over a race weekend.

- Winning drivers: 34 dif-ferent drivers have won in LMP1, representing 14 different nationalities.

- The top speeds reached in an LMP1 car have been: Hybrid, 345.6kph by Lucas di Grassi in an Audi R18 e-tron Quattro at Le Mans, 2015; Non-Hybrid, 350.1kph by Stoffel Vandoorne in a BR Engineering BR1 at Le Mans, 2019.

Toyota Gazoo Racing clinched an overall one-two last night in the FIA WEC 8 Hours of Bahrain, as

their #7 crew of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez se-cured the drivers’ world title for the 2019/2020 World Endurance Cham-pionship (WEC)..

Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) hosted a thrilling race that marked the final round of the WEC season, and which began in daylight conditions and ended at night under floodlights.

The Conway-Kobayashi-Lopez trio finished ahead of Toyota teammates Sebastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakijima and Brendon Hartley. Each crew steered their respective TS050 Hybrids to a to-tal of 263 laps for the race duration, but Buemi-Nakijima-Hartley were classi-fied one minute 04.594 seconds behind the victors.

Fittingly for Toyota, which was mak-ing its final appearance on track in the WEC’s LMP1 category, the Japanese

manufacturers had their country’s two drivers in Kobayashi and Nakajima at the wheel of their cars as the chequered flag was waved.

The result gave Conway-Kobayas-hi-Lopez enough points to leapfrog Buemi-Nakijima-Hartley on the driv-ers’ championship standings to win the coveted title.

Their FIA World Endurance LMP Drivers’ Championship adds to the FIA World Endurance LMP1 Championship already won by Toyota Gazoo Racing heading into yesterday’s season-finale.

Joining the two Toyota crews on the overall podium in third last night were the #37 Jackie Chan DC Racing crew of Ho-Pin Tung, Gabriel Aubry and Will Stevens.

ners in the LMP2 category following a close finish that saw them beat by just 1.894s the #38 JOTA team of Roberto Gonzalez, Antonio Felix Da Costa and Anthony Davidson. Both squads were racing in Oreca 07-Gibsons.

Elsewhere yesterday, the #92 Porsche GT Team of Michael Christensen and Kevin Estre triumphed in the LMGTE Pro class, 2.886s ahead of teammates Gianmaria Bruni and Richard Lietz in the #91 Porsche 911 RSR-19; and Team

Project 1 in the #56 Porsche 911 RSR, driven by the trio of Egidio Perfetti, Larry Ten Voorde and Matteo Cairoli, claimed a dominant first place amongst the LMGTE Am runners.

Those results helped decide four

other WEC titles yesterday.Felipe Albuquerque and Philip Han-

son won the FIA Endurance Trophy for LMP2 Drivers. They were driving the #22 United Autosports Oreca 07-Gib-son along with teammate Paul Di Resta, completing the race fourth in class. Their drivers’ crown adds to United Autsports’ FIA Endurance Trophy for LMP2 Teams for the season.

The GT FIA World Endurance Driv-ers’ Championship was clinched by the Marco Sorensen and the #95 Aston Martin Racing pair of Nicki Thiim, de-spite finishing fifth last night in their Vantage AMR. Their triumph makes it a double for Aston Martin, having also won this season’s GT Manufacturers FIA World Endurance Championship.

Finally, the trio of Francois Perrodo, Emmanuel Collard and Nicklas Nielsen of AF Corse secured both the FIA En-durance Trophy for GTE Am Drivers and the FIA Endurance Trophy for GTE Am Teams trophy. They steered their #83 Ferrari 488 GTE EVO to second in the LMGTE Am category yesterday, which was enough to secure their titles.
