DAILYBITE

It is Christmas and the ‘Ho

ho ho!’ jolly good old fellow in

red-and-white would have

arrived on his reindeer sleigh all

the way from the North Pole to

drop the gifts in your stockings

— if you have been good all

year.

So, who is this old man and

why should he gift the children

of the world?

Here is taking you through

the story of Santa Claus — or St

Nicholas, to address him by his

proper name.

History time, kids!

The legend of St Nicholas

goes all the way back to 3rd cen-

tury AD. It is believed that he

was born sometime around 280

A.D. in Patara, near Myra in

modern-day Turkey, to rich par-

ents who died in an epidemic.

He was raised by his uncle who

was a bishop.

Neither was St Nicholas jolly

nor was he fat. The only similar-

ities with Santa Claus he shared

were his generosity, kindness

and piety.

The legend goes that he gave

away all of his inherited wealth

and travelled the countryside to

serve the poor and sick. One of

the most told tales about him is

how he saved three poor sisters

from being sold into slavery or

prostitution by their father by

providing them with a dowry so

that they could be married.

Over the years, St Nicholas’s

popularity spread, and he

became famous as the protector

of children and sailors. His feast

day is observed on the anniver-

sary of his death — December 6

—by the faithful.

By the Renaissance, St.

Nicholas was the most popular

saint in Europe, and even the

Protestant Reformation —

which discouraged the venera-

tion of saints — did not dimin-

ish the popularity of St

Nicholas, who was associated

with a positive image.

Through these years he did

not have the pink-cheeked,

snow-bearded father Christmas

look that he is identified with

(even by toddlers) today. In

fact, during the 16th Century,

Saint Nicholas was pictured to

be somewhat like this:From St

Nicholas to Sinter Klaas —

Santa Claus is coming to town!

St. Nicholas arrived in the

imagination of the American

popular culture sometime in the

late 1700s. When the Dutch first

settled along the Hudson River

in 1624 and established the

colony of New Amsterdam on

Manhattan Island two years

later, they brought their culture

along.

It is said that in December

1773 and 1774, Dutch families in

New York had gathered to

observe St Nicholas Feast Day

on his death anniversary. The

American newspapers carried

the news piece as the obser-

vance of Sinter Klaas Day

(evolved from St Nicholas’s

Dutch name —Sint Nikolaas).

Since December 6 is considered

lucky for buying wealth and

associated with gifting, the gift-

giver was first mentioned as

‘Santa the Claus’ in a 1773 mag-

azine — Rivington's Gazette —

published in New York City,

saying, "Last Monday, the

anniversary of St Nicholas, oth-

erwise called Santa the Claus,

was celebrated at Protestant

Hall, at Mr Waldron's; where a

great number of sons of the

ancient saint, the Sons of Saint

Nicholas, celebrated the day

with great joy and festivity."

So how did the bubbly Santa

as we know him today arrive?

In 1804, John Pintard, a mem-

ber of the New York Historical

Society, distributed woodcuts of

St. Nicholas at the society’s

annual meeting. The back-

ground of the engraving con-

tained the images of Santa Claus

similar to how we know him

today — complete with stock-

ings filled with toys and a fruit

handing over the fireplace. In

1809, Washington Irving

referred to St. Nicholas as the

patron saint of New York in his

book— The History of New

York.

However, until this point,

Sinter Klaas was associated

with gifting on Feast Day

(December 6) and not with

Christmas.

Here is a man dressed as

Sinter Klaas at a parade in

Amsterdam“Happy Christmas

to all, and to all a good night!”

Between 1820 and 1840,

stores began to advertise Santa

Claus in newspapers announc-

ing the Christmas shopping. In

1841, thousands of children

reportedly visited a

Philadelphia shop to see a life-

size Santa Claus model.

It was only a short while

before the children wanted to

take a peek at the live Santa in

the stores and the parents

tagged along as they shopped

for the holiday season. In the

1890s, the Salvation Army need-

ed money to pay for the free

Christmas meals they provided

to needy families. They began

dressing up unemployed men

in Santa Claus suits and sending

them into the streets of New

York to solicit donations.

Two New Yorkers —

Clement Clark Moore and

Thomas Nast — are responsible

for Santa Claus as we know him

today — the one for whom mil-

lions wait on Christmas Eve.

In 1822, Clement Clarke

Moore, an Episcopal minister,

wrote a long Christmas poem —

A Visit from St. Nicholas — for

his three daughters.

Moore’s poem (which inci-

dentally he was reluctant to

publish due to the ‘frivolous

nature’) went on to be called

"arguably the best-known vers-

es ever written by an

American", and became respon-

sible for the image of Santa

Claus. The poem describes

Santa as a ‘right jolly old elf’

who was chubby and plump,

and the supernatural ability to

ascend a chimney with a mere

nod of his head. His poem pop-

ularised the Santa Claus who

flew from house to house on

Christmas Eve — in “a minia-

ture sleigh” led by eight flying

reindeer — leaving presents for

children.

A reluctant Moore had creat-

ed one of the most popular

American icons.

In 1881, cartoonist Thomas

Nast drew on Moore’s poem to

visually create our jolly good

Santa Claus. The cartoon was

published in Harper’s Weekly

and gave Santa a bright red suit

trimmed with white fur, North

Pole workshop, elves, and his

wife, Mrs Claus.And does forc-

ing captive reindeer to drag the

fat old man across the globe-

trotting on a sleigh not amount

to animal cruelty? It seems

deliberate and premeditated

cruelty to me.

It is time Santa hired a very

good lawyer to argue his case!

There kids! Though we bust-

ed your Santa bubble, we still

hope you have a very Merry

Christmas and loads of happi-

ness ahead — with or without

the jolly good fellow!

rejoice knowing that it cannot do

anything till BJP led NDA govern-

ment is in power. They won elec-

tions on farmers agenda of waving

loans and they did it within ten

days. Now, Sikh community

where already government is run

by Congress are demanding return

of Bharat Rattan of Rajiv Gandhi

and apology by Rahul Gandhi for

84 riots. Now the question arises

Congress is fulfilling demands of

people of every shade are now

they going to fulfill demand of

Sikhs or not, remains to watch.

However, A statue of former

prime minister Rajiv Gandhi here

was vandalized on Tuesday by

some persons, who Punjab Chief

Minister Amarinder Singh

claimed, owed allegiance to the

Shiromani Akali Dal in the state.

The chief minister has asked the

police to take action in the matter

and identify the perpetrators.

Paint was sprayed by the miscre-

ants on the statue at the Salem

Tabri area here, police said. They

carried out the act in full public

glare and blamed Rajiv Gandhi for

the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, they said.

Condemning the incident, Singh

tweeted, "Strongly condemn van-

dalisation of Rajiv Gandhi's statue

by @Akali_ Dal_ workers in

Ludhiana. Have asked Police to

identify the guilty & take strict

action." "@officeofssbadal should

apologise to people of Punjab for

this obnoxious act," he posted on

Twitter tagging the office of SAD

chief Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Amarinder Singh also asked the

SAD to apologise to the people of

Punjab for this act. Police said the

miscreants demanded that statues

of Rajiv Gandhi across the country

be removed and Bharat Ratna con-

ferred on him be withdrawn. The

statue was later cleaned by some

Ludhiana Congress leaders.

Congress's Ludhiana president

Gurpreet Singh said they have

lodged a police complaint.

Merry Christmas! Here's what dented Brand Santa forever

AKSHAYA NATH

May 22, 2018, was the

100th day of the protest

against Sterlite in

Tuticorin. Men, women

and children took to the

streets and marched

towards the Secretariat to

show their solidarity and

demand their right to live

in a safe environment.

Little did 13 people in

this group know that

they were to breathe their

last and were to never

return home.

The 17-year-old

Snowlin, with a dream to

become a lawyer, had

talked to her mother and

sister-in-law into letting

her go for the protest. “If

not for them, who was to

speak for their right?”

This was the question she

asked her mother to

make them participate.

Snowlin was shot in her

head. Her parents have

still not got access to her

autopsy report.

But the recent autopsy

report accessed by

Reuters brings to light

that 12 out of 13 protest-

ers killed during the fir-

ing against anti-Sterlite

protesters in

Thoothukudi were

apparently hit by bullets

in the head or chest – and

half of them were shot

from behind.Though

police rules in India do

allow officials to use live

ammunition to counter

civil unrests, there is also

a clear rule that they

should not shoot to kill. It

has been clearly stated

that officials should

shoot below the waist

and only at the most

threatening part of the

crowd.

But was this followed

in the Tuticorin firing?

Was a 17-year-old girl a

threat? Snowlin’s family

recall a peaceful protest

turning violent – they

insist that the police

opened fire first. But

CCTV visuals from the

Collector do show men

attacking the police as

well as the government

building and setting gov-

ernment vehicles on fire.

Investigations by the CBI

are still underway.

But the news was

shocking for the families

of the 13 victims and

hundreds of others who

had suffered due to the

protest. Recently, on

December 15, the NGT

had dismissed the Tamil

Nadu government's deci-

sion to close the Sterlite

copper plant in Tuticorin.

The NGT court in its

order directed Vedanta

to deposit Rs 2.50 crore as

a token amount for their

alleged failures and

asked the company to

spend Rs 100 crores with-

in a period of three years

for the welfare of the

inhabitants in the area. “I

have lost my leg, I am not

able to walk properly. A

compensation of five

lakh was given. I will add

another lakh and return 6

lakh - will the govern-

ment be able to return

my leg?” asked

Princeton, a survivor of

the May 22 attack.

Henry Dephane, an

activist closely working

with the Sterlite case,

revealed with bewilder-

ment how the Madurai

bench’s order to provide

the post-mortem report

of the 13 people killed

has apparently still not

been implemented by the

state government.

“It has been seven

months since the incident

took place and seven

months that the govern-

ment of Tamil Nadu has

just not been able to pro-

vide certificates of the

post-mortem to the fami-

lies. This is atrocious. The

right to life means the

right of my family mem-

bers to know how I have

been killed and what

went wrong,” stated

Henry.

Politicians have added

their voice. “The Sterlite

shooting in Thuthukudi

is a planned murder of

the people by the

Edappadi government.

The autopsy report

shows that the people

were shot on the head

and chest and from

behind. A government

that has killed the com-

mon man for a corporate

will be taught a lesson by

the public,” wrote DMK

MP Kanimozhi on

Twitter.Her colleague

DMK MP TKS Elangovan

added, “This govern-

ment did not take cogni-

sance of the agitation

going on over there for

100 days and suddenly

opening fire at them is a

barbaric act. Now people

will understand how

brutal and barbaric the

state government is.”

While the AIADMK

doesn’t take the criticism

lightly, the party’s

spokesperson Kovai

Sathyan in a quick

response said, “I am sur-

prised DMK is making

this statement. If you

remember 1998's, peace-

ful protestors from

Manjolai tea estate were

killed and it was under

the DMK when M

Karunanidhi was the

CM. My statement is not

justifying the deaths in

Tuticorin. I am saying

there is a CBI inquiry

underway trying to

unravel the root cause of

the issue. The DMK’s

hands are tainted.”An

international non-profit

organisation, Global

Witness, in its study

states that India has seen

a significant increase in

killings and repressions

during protests and civic

activism. In more than

half the cases, the perpe-

trators are the people

whom we consider to be

our protectors in the legal

system – the police. In the

world, India was counted

as the fourth most deadly

state for registering the

killing of land and envi-

ronment defenders in

2016.

In Tamil Nadu itself,

multiple battles have

been fought –

K u d a n k u l a m ,

Kodaikanal Hindustan

Uniliver, Neduvasal

Hydrocarbon and many

many more. In each of

these, the common citi-

zen has been the victim.

Perhaps it is time to think

whether this develop-

ment really involves the

loss of such lives.

Pak PM raises Kashmirissue with UN chief

SRINAGAR, DEC 25,: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran

Khan telephoned United Nations chief Antonio Guterres

this week and raised the issue of Kashmir, a U.N.

spokesman has said. Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for

the U.N. Secretary-General, did not divulge details about

the conversation between Khan and Guterres but confirmed

that the phone call took place.

India's external affairs ministry spokesperson Raveesh

Kumar in response said that "the statements coming out

from their side demonstrates the insincerity and duplicity".

In response to India's strong retort to Khan that Pakistan

should mind its own business and that Kashmir is an inte-

gral part of India, Mr. Dujarric said, "Our position on

Kashmir has been reiterated. There is an observer group as

mandated by the Security Council," referring to the U.N.

Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan

(UNMOGIP).

"It's only normal that the Secretary-General speak to Heads

of Governments and Heads of State and, as I said, I can con-

firm that the call took place and that the Prime Minister

raised the issue of Kashmir," Dujarric said.

In recent tweets, following the killing of seven civilians in

the disturbed Himalayan region claimed by both India and

Pakistan, PM Khan said that "Kashmiris must be allowed to

decide their future".

India maintained that the UN observer group in Kashmir has

become irrelevant after the Shimla Agreement and the con-

sequent establishment of the Line of Control (LoC).

through Facebook Inc-owned messaging serviceWhatsApp. Incidents have been reported from UttarPradesh, Assam, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tripura, andWest Bengal.

“The instances of misuse of social media by criminalsand anti-national elements have brought new chal-lenges to the Law Enforcement Agencies,” said the min-istry.

These include inducement for recruiting terrorists, circulation of obscene content, spread of disharmony, incitement of violence, public order, and fake news.

“At present, the consultation process is underway. Itstarted with inter-ministerial consultations and there-after consultations were held with other stakeholders, including major social media platforms/ messagingservices platforms such as Facebook, Google, Twitter,Yahoo, and WhatsApp, as well as associations such asthe Internet and Mobile Association of India, CellularOperators Association of India, and Internet ServiceProviders Association of India, representing intermedi-aries. The government intends to consult all stakehold-ers in the process,” the ministry said.

The draft rules require a platform to break end-to-end encryption and introduce systems for retainingdata and information so that the origin of the messagescan be traced, according to a report.

This is crucial as the central government and socialmedia platforms are trying to reach common groundover the mechanism to ensure that fake messages can betraced. Earlier, WhatsApp had said that it was not pos-sible to trace the origin of a message given its privacysettings. However, the government has sought “techni-cal innovation” from the company to address the issue.

The insertion of Rule 3(4) makes proactive monthlynotification across intermediaries to warn users repeat-edly effective. “The government is committed to thefreedom of speech and expression and privacy of its cit-izens as enshrined in the Constitution of India. The gov-ernment does not regulate content appearing on socialnetwork platform,” said the ministry.

The draft Information Technology (IntermediaryGuidelines) Rules, 2018, requires intermediaries, oronline platforms, to “deploy technology-based auto-mated tools or appropriate mechanisms, with appropri-ate controls, for proactively identifying or removing ordisabling access to unlawful information or content”,the Indian Express report said.

However, social media platforms have to be account-able under the law to prevent its misuse and spread offake news, it said.

Army recovers ...Siachen Glacier, developed a snag and had to be

landed around a post called Khanda in January thisyear.

The pilots managed to land safely on soft snow butcould not reach the helipad there, the sources said.

Though the chopper landed safely, the overnightsnow resulted in its falling sideways.

Attempts were made to recover it but there was nosuccess till July, they said.

The attempts were successful in July when the tech-nicians and pilots of the Army ALH squadron 203 inLeh managed to put new parts on the chopper and

bring it back safely to the Siachen Glacier base camp.“I know the pilots and technicians who were

involved in this operation. Knowing these people as Ihave headed this Army Aviation Corps for a couple ofyears, all I can say is that nothing is impossible for thesemen from Indian Army,” former Army Aviation chiefLt Gen P K Bharali (retd) told on Tuesday.

The chopper was stuck at 18,000 feet and recoveringit from there is a world record of sorts because India isone of the very few countries in the world who operatechoppers at such high altitudes.

The Cheetah and Chetak choppers, which areFrench-origin machines in the Indian Army, fly ataround 23,000 feet. The French military also doesn’t usethem for such extreme operations where the margin oferror is very thin.

NC-PDP disem...the cost of effective development in Jammu and

Kashmir", the PC Chairman added. "Both NC and PDP are parties based around two cor-

rupt dynastic nuclei. They are two similar parts of apolitical cartel which collectively strives for nepotism, theft and plunder of the State's resources so that the twofamilies can amass wealth for their coming generations. It is time for the political leaders to wonder if surrender-ing their dignity at the service of these two corruptdynasties is worth it. Omar Abdullah and MehboobaMufti were both born with silver spoons in theirmouths and have left no stone unturned to further plun-der the State and deprive its young of opportunities todream of a bright future. Their alliance is an ingloriouschapter of desperation that has come to fore as a befit-ting tribute to the destructive role played by these twodynasties in the State - of fueling alienation in Kashmirthrough stentorian rhetoric and slogans while shame-lessly furthering their own economic interests by pre-tending to be nationalists in Delhi", the PC Chairmansaid.

The PC Chairman said NC and PDP had left no stoneunturned, during their successive tenures, to disem-power and sideline elected grassroots democratic insti-tutions. "Both twin dynasties of the NC-PDP alliancehave always been paranoid about decentralization ofpower to the grassroots institutions. Left to the two fam-ilies, they would prefer to even centralize the powers oflegislators and Ministers within the four walls of theirpalaces on Gupkar Road. They have been petty andinsecure when it comes to Panchayat and Urban LocalBody representatives. Their tantrum of allegedly 'boy-cotting' the ULB and Panchayat Elections was in somemeasure based on this insecurity. The tantrum was pri-marily a blackmailing tactic where the two twin dynas-ties embraced each other against the emergence ofPeoples' Conference as a viable, effective and popularalternative to their political monopoly", Sajad GaniLone further said in Handwara.

Seeking the effective empowerment of Panchayatand Urban Local Body elected representatives, SajadGani Lone said the elected grassroots representativesshould be given powers to improve the delivery of gov-ernance where the two dynasties have utterly failed."The Governor's Administration and the CentralGovernment should ensure the elected representativesare given utmost respect and dignity and provided withfacilities, reasonable honorariums and powers to bringabout change at the ground level. Their safety and secu-rity should be ensured and the Administration shouldgive them every possible opportunity to work for thebenefit of the traditionally disempowered sections ofour society", the PC Chairman added.
