offiCE OF THE PRESIDENT

Dear Graduate:

As each of you receive your diploma, it is accompanied with my heartfelt congratulations, as well as the prayer that you will measure up to the tas k of becoming the physician that we believed you could be when you were admitted to the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery.

Each of you represents an elite member of the community. You were chosen from many applicants who aspired to the place which you were granted at the College. During the years spent in completing the curriculum prescribed by the faculty, you have proven that you are intellectually capable of earning your degree, Many of you, through your extra-curricular activities and people orientation, have demonstrated that you have the capacity to become empathetic and concerned healers.

I hope that you will always remember that you are not just another physician. Indeed, I hope you remember that you are a special kind of physician. You ate a Doctor of Os-teopathy; whose approach to each patient is based upon a holistic philosophy which emphasizes the total health and well-being of the Patient. If your constant concern and commitment is to your patients, I know that your life will be full of meaning and you will be fulfilled in your calling.

I look ,to your achievements to continue to be my inspiration as President of this ristitution.

PACEMAKER 19 SAUL ZELNICK M.D.

Dr. Saul Zelnick, M.D .. came from New York City where he taught at Albert Einstein and Mount Sinai medical schools . Then he set up a family planning clinic at Kansas State before coming to COMS in 1977. Since then he 's made his voice heard in the lecture rooms, clinics. and delivery rooms . His enthusiasm for his subject has penetrated all aspects of his career as assistant and associate professor of Ob/ Gyn.

SO DEDICA liON ELIZABETH BURROWS D.O.

Dr. Elizabeth Burrows delivered over 5,CXX) babies before she stopped counting. If the parents couldn 't afford more , the charge was $1.00. She has been head of Obstetrics / Gynecology. Academic Dean . Clinical Dean, and Dean for Student Affairs at COMS. Many would have been lost without her individual help sessions on pelvic exams and delivery techniques. Patients. students. and administrators all benefit from their contact with Dr. Borrows.

Venipuncture labs. Surreptitiously hooked to Biochem labs to catch reflected credibility . On cue, we pick up needles , holders , tubes , and tourniquete. Everything goes ~moothly until it 's time to put on the tourniquet. Some get hem on right the first time. Some put them on then start rying to figure out the needles and tubes while gangrene ets in . Some just tie them on. The big moment comes. ticker gets more nervous than st ickee, and that 's some•ing. Needles quiver wildly. " Here goesl " "I don't know

March 7. 1980. IQOOAM. The class of 1981 is tak ing a test they had been unable to get

rescheduled . The class of 1983 is outside. on the north s ide of Grand, between

34th and 35th. There is no class of 1982. A countdown begins, and at ten o'clock, straight up. the earth

transmits a little rumble . The sound crescendos, vibrations shake neighboring buildings, and , as quickly as it began . it 's over. A cloud of dust fills the space that had been occupied by the upper reaches of the Commodore Hotel.

By the skilled hand of Jim Redyke. of Dykon. Inc. (Tulsa, OK ). the Commodore met its demise gracefully. The center section went first. followed by the inside rear of both wings . The explosions then radiated out and forward , folding the structure into the gap left by the now-gone center. A huge dust cloud rose and dissipated. color ing surrounding snow to resemble a lunar scene. Hardly a brick fell outside the foundation. Bizarrely enough. however. the front door and archway remained intact.

The Commodore, an old landmark . made way for construction of COMS ' first new structure. Pages 40 & 41 carry more info on the project. and Pacemaker '81 will keep you posted at to is progress .

COMMODORE HOTEL ~ ·~

40

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY

The dust from the Commodore has settled. The work has only just begun.

The next phase involved the removal of the remains of the Commodore. and there was a lot i! The original idea was to take the brick . concrete, etc. and use it for a fill on the rapidly eroding banks of the ravine south of COMS. As the tremendous job of moving neared completion, neighbors to the south began to complain about the noise, fill , appearance. etc. The pile had to be shifted slightly eastward , and the finishing touches were applied. A few trees had to be sacrif iced in the process. The area now is dirt -covered. and slated to be turned into a park (the picnic kind, complete with ants ).

The construction moves on. At the time of this writing, excavation of the foundation has been completed, and construction is set to begin in earnest. The Leo A. Daly Co. of Omaha, designers of most of Creighton University's (Omaha ) expansion, drew up the plans for the new facility as well as plans for remodeling the old complex. This project couldn ' t be at a better time, providing jobs, and (more importantly ) sites for little kids to play over the summer.

To those of us still here , the new complex is something of a pipe dream come true. In a few short years , the students who still come to class will be seated in new lecture halls, able to clearly hear the professors on the mobile mikes. They will be able to cross the hall to the library. then, hopefully. will have fingertip access to the State Medical Library.

In the '81 and '82 Pacemaker, you will be kept up to date with progress in the project.

The construction project will cost $8 million and will include some

remodeling of existing facilities.

Construction is scheduled to begin in April with a targeted move - in

deadline of August , 1981.

The new educational complex .... 111 contain 82,000 square feet of space

and will consist of five above ground floors and one sub-level floor.

The complex will house three lecture halls in the semi-circular portion

of the building located on the west side. Each lecture hall will con

cain 4,000 square feet. The tower portion , located on the east side ,

will house a library, an audio-visual center and facilieies for health

care programs now in the planning stages .

On March 7 the College undertook demolition of the old Commodo r e Hotel

co make way for the new project.

The general contractor for the building project is the Weitz Company ,

Inc., Des Moines . The Leo A Daly Company, Omaha, Neb., is the architect/

planner .

Additional facilities became necessary after the College's Board of

Directors, acting on a faculty recomcendation, voted to return to a

four-year program effective with the ente r ing class in the Fall of 1979.

Consequently, by the Fall of 1981, the College will need facilities to

house an additional class of 180 students. Currently , the college en

rollment for three classes is 540. Enrollment will increase to 720

when all enrolled classes are operating under the four-yea r schedule.

PHYSIOPHARM

Rx: one migraine once a day for nearly three months. For many of us. this pretty well summed up Physio-Pharm.

Of course, the once a day signature includes many a night , of supposedly, anyway, pouring over the textbooks.

Physio-Pharm was our firs t real "medical" system. We'd just completed Anatomy and were on the home stretch in Biochem. Physio-Pharm looked like a piece of cake . . . to those that had had either one before.

Right off. we got into the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS to those who wallow in esoterica). Dr. Curr ie acquainted us with his schematic of the ANS, a picture that bears a striking resemblance to a large intestine with tw igs stick ing out of it. The colon was to represent the spinal cord (CNS ) (interesting parallel here) , while the twigs were to be various peripheral nerves.

Of course. there was an entirely new vocabulary to be learned. It made perfect sense, every word describing what was going on. The only problem was we d idn 't know what was going on, and/ or couldn't spell.

The most traumatic part of the course occurred midway: THE DOG LABS. They were especially bad for those of us who own dogs , and had imaginat ions active enough to see beloved Fido the subject of medical school demonstrations. There was a rush on the pet licensing bureau to keep a canine buddy from being classified a stray. The end, though, was swift and merciful. The anesthetized dogs receive a bolus of Na-pentobarbiol, 500mg IV .

Antibiotics almost wiped us out (action: student-o-static ). In the midst of all this, of course, we absorbed plenty of Physiology, getting a glimpse of things to come when we hit the systems. The glimpse was a real shocker.

Anyway. we survived. Supposedly, we 're not highly competent and knowledgeable in Physio-Pharm, at least according to tests passed with the help of (or. rather, in spite of) Notepool.

J. Leonard Azneer , PH.D., Our mentor in learning the legal, professional, and personal aspects of the practice of medicine. Through a series of introductory lectures he delved into a variety of philosophical quandries that challenge the modern physician. The approach diverged from traditional lecture to a form of Socratic dialogue. All who attended were challenged emotionally , morally . and ultimately , religously. Thought processes were stirred to arousal. A beginning in the development of our professional eth-ics.

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine provides us with a therapeutic modality unique to our profession. It teaches the link between seemingly unrelated lesions. By correcting the underlying defect, the body can often assume its own curative processes. Its relevance in medical practice is irrevocable. but like all other specialties. it can be mastered by only a select few. We are instructed on the basics, and it these additional tools that will make us physicians with a distinction further down the road.

O.M.M.

O.M.M. is the epitome of the art of medicine. While terminology and technique vary between phyicians, each has adapted an effective method based on the principles inherent in the teachings of A.T. Still. The years of practice and refinement have honed these procedures, so that they now have their maximal physiologic effect when performed as indicated. Even so, the state of the art is still in its infancy. We truly have a long way to go!

Lab sessions are the proving grounds where lecture material is put to practical use. Under the guidance of second year TA's, fellows, and the ever-vigilant faculty , we develop our palpatory skills and diagnostic capabilities. It is certainly not an overnight process. Every week you pick up something new, and a technique that develops into your own style, no matter what the handouts may say to the contrary. By the end of the first year you still aren't exactly sure where it's all going, but you are far enough along that you at least know how to get there.

PSG The actiV Ities of PSG over the past year have

provided students with a caprice alternative to the rigorous and demanding schedule of medical school. Some of the social activities included the Kansas City Baseball Trip, the Pig Roast. October Fest , and I'd Rather Be in Mexico Drinking Tequila Party. Although there was much time and effort given for each event. they would not have been as successful without t he comaraderie of the students. In the past year . the work fraternity had real meaning for the members and friends of PSG.

COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE AND SURGERY 3200 Grand Avenue o Des Moines. Iowa 50312 o (515) 274-4861

Dear Reader, The first year of a new decade has seen COMS go through

several changes: 1. The re-initiation of a four year curriculum. 2. The acquisition of the Commodore Hotel and the start of construction of a new educational facility at that site. 3. The appointment of Joseph Walsh, Ph.D., D.O. as the new Dean for Academic Affairs. Dr. Walsh's recent graduation from COMS gives him a unique grasp of the student's problems and needs.

The future hopes to bring a university-like climate to the school, with the addition of new facilities for the ancillary medical services, thus producing a medical complex rivaling any of those in the United States. These changes attest to the strengths of COMS which will carry it through the 1980's and beyond.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the others who have helped to make this book a reality. First, we wish to thank Bernie Despres for his hard work on the third year section of the book. Similar thanks go to Mark Menadue and Tom Benzoni for their work on the first year section. Thirdly, we would like to thank Rob Nebergall and Tom Wood for their work on the advertizing section and to Marybeth Francis for making sure that letters to parents, physicians, and advertizers were all mailed out on time. We also would like to thank the SSP members and other Pacemaker staffers for their hard work in putting these pages together.

Our final, and most special thanks go to the parents, faculty, staff, physicians, and business sponsors whose financial support have made the Pacemaker's production possible.

Sincerely,

;,~>!. ..(~~ MichaelS. Latterrnan
