Three patients tested (stool a1-antitryp-sin clearance, 2 patients; fecal excretion of 125I after intra-venous 125I-albumin, 1 patient) had direct evidence ofgastrointestinal protein wasting.

The erythrocyte sedimentation rate was elevated in 1of 6 patients. Serum iron was decreased in 3 of 5 patients,serum folate was decreased in 3 of 7 patients, and vitaminB12 was decreased in 2 of 7 patients. Both of the latterpatients had a normal stage II Schilling’s test with ad-ministration of intrinsic factor.

Serum immunoglobulin levels were normal in 8 of 8patients. Human immunodeficiency virus antibody re-sults were negative in 4 of 4 patients.
